Right way to update rooted Oneplus 8 Pro - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
I'm running:
- Oneplus 8 Pro + latest Magisk
- Android 12, version C33
- I see there's an update to C35
I have Oxygen Updater which can be set to:
- incremental
- full updates (recommended for rooted phones)
I see a lot of threads here (some with conflicting info) about incremental, full updates, OTA updates if not via Oxygen Updater, Magisk flash to inactive slot, Magisk rooting normally, etc.
While reading all of them I got more or less confused
Can someone help me with an advice as to what would be the right way to upgrade from my C33 to C35 without ending up with a boot loop and a weekend of recovering my phone? (already had this 2 times and it was a horrific experience to go through)?
Do I download the full update with Oxygen Updater and then after install, without rebooting, go to Magisk and install to inactive slot?
Thank you!

Yes that would be correct. At least that's how I've done it before. But, as always, keep backups.

Hello, Thank you for this information.
Is there any way to easily update to Android 13 without having to wipe data and lose root ?

YMMV but this worked for me.
I used the "Oxygen Updater" app to download the F.62 (Android 13) Full OTA and flashed it using the local upgrade app from OnePlus (I have stock recovery). Make sure to re-install Magisk to inactive slot before rebooting.
After that l upgraded to F.63 (latest OTA) following these instructions:
Open Magisk Manager, select “Uninstall” and choose the “Restore Images” option. Magisk will restore your phone’s stock boot image that was backed up during the rooting process.
Now go to “Settings” → “System” → “System updates” and select “Download and Install Now” to install the OOS OTA update on your rooted phone.
After the update finishes, DO NOT REBOOT the phone. Since you restored the stock boot image, the root access will be lost if your reboot right now.
Now open Magisk Manager, press “Install” and select “Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)” from the list of available methods.
Finally, select “Let’s Go” to confirm and install Magisk to the inactive slot (where the OxygenOS OTA has been installed).
After Magisk is installed, reboot your phone by pressing the ‘Reboot’ button.

I don't know if the first step was necessary or not... anyway my data was all intact afterwards. Probably best to back up anything important just in case!

Hello,
Thank you so much. Great news, it worked for me too ! In case someone wants to do the same, here's the procedure that worked for me :
I used the "Oxygen Updater" app to download the F.63 (Android 13) Full OTA and flashed it using the local upgrade app from OnePlus (I also have stock recovery). I re-installed Magisk to inactive slot before rebooting.

[GUIDE] How to get Magisk Root & Xposed on Oreo 8.0 (STOCK)

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR DEVICE BRICKS, SD CARD DAMAGES OR NUCLEAR WAR STARTS.
Rooting method described below will work on Oreo-running devices ONLY (confirmed on build OPN27.76-12-22 and on OPNS27.76-12-22-9).
Please follow all steps very carefully and make sure you downloaded correct versions of all .zip files mentioned in my instruction!
ROOT (SafetyNet test will PASS!)
1. Download all files listed below:
- twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img (CLICK)
- Magisk-v17.1.zip or newer if availabe (CLICK)
- f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip (CLICK)
2. Flash TWRP using Fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img
3. Flash Magisk-v17.1.zip (or newer if available).
4. Go to TWRP/Settings and open Terminal.
5. Run both of following commands:
Code:
echo KEEPVERITY=true>>/data/.magisk
echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.magisk
6. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
7. Reboot (it is crucial in case of installing Xposed afterwards).
8. Optional but recommended: update your Magisk Manager to the latest version (CLICK).
9. Open Magisk -> Modules and update f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module to the newest version (can be done only via Magisk Manager only if new version of f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module is available).
10. Enjoy rooted Oreo.
UPDATE 03.10.2018
If you flashed everything as described in OP and noticed that you got stuck in boot, go to TWRP again and:
1. Uninstall Magisk using latest Magisk uninstaller.
2. Flash Magisk 17.1.zip AGAIN (yes.).
3. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
4. Enjoy rooted phone.
PS. I do not know why device does not start after first flashing to be honest, but these four steps above are confirmed by several users (and by me).
UPDATE 03.10.2018
XPOSED (be careful: Xposed for Oreo is still in BETA distribution and flashing it will break your SafetyNet!)
1. Open Magisk Manager -> Downloads.
2. Download Xposed Installer (the one from the screen below):
https://image.ibb.co/byLUuK/Xposed_Framework.png
3. Let Magisk install it.
4. Reboot.
5. Open Xposed Installer (you will see orange exclamation mark, don't worry).
6. Reboot once again.
7. Voila.
Hit THANKS if I helped!

@rafikowy ah, so basically the problem was with dm-verity and forced encryption? That makes sense. So it would basically also work if you'd not extract the boot.img from the OTA zip and mod it with Magisk manager with both enabled and flash that (might be easier than flashing normal Magisk and then make the changes), so you'd basically just flash the img and the module zip in TWRP.
Well, if no bigger bugs appear I might try the Oreo OTA and root tomorrow. Don't think it will be here on its own till then, even if it's already the official rollout (Indian and brasilian users seem to get it officially)
First magisk manager did not want to open, but a reboot solved. thanks
So, Lenovorola is still "undecided" in regards to patching F2FS.
I wonder why...

Nope. It's impossible for now. You can`t go back to full stock, because you'll lose your IMEI with flashing full 7.1.1 FW with RSD or fastboot.

Just tried this method with local upgrade. It works indeed! Thanks!
But TWRP got lost from local upgrade. So after restarting flashed twrp-installer-fajita-3.2.3-37.zip via Magisk Manager. But install script anounced that I am now unrooted.
Restarting phone confirmed that.
Anyway installed root again via TWRP.

What is safe way to install TWRP in between those 5 update OTA+keep root steps? I once tried some kind of "OTA" update via twrp, but all was lost. (Could be a bit older twrp version without pattern unlock)
Why not just download the ZIP from the TWRP rather than use the OTA method?
The zips are available here.
I never uninstall magisk by the way. However that is part of the instructions. There are TWRP instructions, it's the third post, I believe.

Well I used this thread (How to Update/Return to Stock your OnePlus 6/6T(ROOT | NO ROOT | STOCK BASED |OTHERS)) from @mauronofrio as my guide. And in 2nd paragraph it states:
2. I have a stock rom with an unlocked bootloader and I'm rooted or I made some modifications:
You can use:
Local Update Method (Recommended)
Fastboot Update Method
TWRP Update Method
MSM Tool Restore Method
Local update method is recommended. So I was following this "general knowledge". Also I lost all user data (with nandroid backup) updating via twrp. Could be that my TWRP was outdated, but I would rather not to loose my user data again :/
Are you just OOS, rooted, TWRP?
I just flash the ZIP in twrp, flash twrp installer, reboot recovery, flash magisk. You can Repeat those steps if you want to update both slots. No reason to complicate it. I've never lost any data. The only time I format or lose data is going between OOS and AOSP roms. Then it is definitely important to backup data (always important to backup data anyways though).

Using Oxygen Updater to automatically upgrade to OB2 from A10

It boots into TWRP just fine but always ends in either error 1 or error 7.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
In Android 5.0 and above, Google introduced the concept of block-based OTAs. This new mechanism does certain pre-OTA block checks to verify the integrity of the device’s software. In layman terms, once the installation begins, the device partitions (like system, boot, vendor, dtbo, etc) are checked for modifications like Root, TWRP, etc. And if detected, the OTA update will fail to install.

Download OB2 OTA.zip and copie it into the root of your storage.
Go to System update --> local upgrade, choose the ota file and install it trough ota updater. Not sure what you are trying there with twrp.
This is what I'm referring to.
I'd maybe consider avoiding retaining root. Re-root afterwards.
I'll give that a shot, thanks

I've never seen it done this way either. But I can't see even updater essentially doing what payload dumper and magisk do in one app, hence be suggesting to avoid rerooting.
Personally I'd never have twrp fully installed, I'd only boot it

I assume you have root on Android 10.
Backup first.
Remove Magisk modules.
Download Ob2 .Put it in the root of the phone (not in any folder).
Upgrade with Settings> Local Upgrade. Don't Reboot!!!
Open Magisk Magager. Touch install. Choose (Direct Install).
Back in Magisk Manager. Touch install. Choose (Install to other slot after ota).
Reboot to system.

Is it really that simple to upgrade from 10 to 11?
I have twrp on both slots. No wiping etc. in twrp or else?
Yes.
You only have to be on Android 10 stable with working root.

I try to boot twrp.img and got Qualcom Crash black screen. I was nervous...., but the phone start ok.

11.0.2.2 and keeping root?

Now that 11.0.2.2 is available OTA, can anybody give me a quick guide on how to upgrade from my existing 11.0.1.1 without losing root?
Hi. you have to download the full rom package. disable all modules in magisk. update in local update system. especially do not restart. and in magisk manager click on install and install on inactive slot after OTA update. magisk will recreate a boot image on the inactive slot. which will become active on restart. once the restart is complete the root is kept. all that remains is to reactivate the magisk modules.

That script is for older devices that has recovery inside boot.
OnePlus devices launches with Android 10 has a separate recovery slot. This means in order to install TWRP again your need to flash it with fastboot again.

Have said this before, shouldn't be any confusion, like I said I have a guide for it.
Extract from the guide for retaining root.
Update from 11 stable to 11+ stable whilst retaining root
For these guides the version used, was canary, simply change the channel to canary then select install / update:
Magisk Manager - Magisk (Canary) version: 1469b82a (21101)
Magisk - Magisk (Canary) version: 1469b82a (21101)
1. Download the relevant firmware for your device via oxygen updater
2. Open Magisk and remove all the modules you have installed, then reboot
**NOTE- At this point I copied out the whole firmware to my computer and extracted payload then extracted the contents of payload using payload dumper, the full firmware for 11.0.1.1 EU IN2023BA ,the boot img and patched boot img are at the foot of this guide.
3. Open up settings / system / system updates, click the cog and select "Local Upgrade" the file should be listed on screen, if not then move the file to the root of your phones storage /sdcard
4. Click install and allow it to go through the process
**NOTE- DO NOT REBOOT AT THIS POINT YOU WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO PATCH ON THE FLY, SIMPLY BACK OUT OF THE SCREEN WHICH SAYS INSTALLATION COMPLETED. RESTART TO EXPERIENCE NEW FEATURES
5. Open up magisk and click install (you may see two install buttons, top one is magisk and the bottom is magisk manager, we need the top one)
6. You'll be faced with a screen that has several options, you want to select Install to Inactive slot (After OTA) then select "LET'S GO" once complete click reboot
7. Once your phones booted up your system / files should all remain as they were and you should have root access.
Thread:. https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-8-pro/how-to/root-uk-eu-patched-magisk-boot-img-t4175033
You have an easier method if the OTA update is there in the system. Follow below guide. Specifically, step 2,3 and 5. That's all you need. You don't need the whole update. Tested this twice. 11 to 11.0.1.1 and so on.

Steps 5 and 6 did not preserve root comping from OOS10. Magisk Manager is still there though. Looks like I'll be looking for a way to apply root again.

That must be you're magisk manager and or you left magisk modules enabled..
Otherwise your phone wouldn't be booted at all..
To confirm, the steps have been used 100's of times without problems, the few that have issues have specific problems, namely what I mentioned above but more often than not they have an issue they aren't aware of and don't declare to be so I can't help them.
I would hazard a guess that that is the problem

It was a couple of modules I forgot about. Got it sorted now. Thanks.
Not sure if the question was answered really. I have the ota update alert but can't install the ota without flashing the original boot.img (not a problem just have to get in front of a computer)..I tried this method but the full image on oxygen updater and OnePlus support site is 11.0.1.1 and not the new 11.0.2.2.
What's the easiest way of doing an ota without having to flash back stock boot.img, taking the ota, and reinstalling magisk/patching image if there's one?
Wait for the 11.0.2.2 Full update to keep root; that's what a few of us are waiting on as well

You were able to take the ota without reflashing stock boot.img? It's currently failing for me and I'm fairly sure it's because I have a patched boot partition (this happened already when I upgraded via ota from oxygen 10 that's why I'm fairly sure). Let me know.
Sounds like because of your patched boot.
No, I have not seen the full ota 11.0.2.2 to download, I was giving an example....

Let me know if you need help.
thank you but i tried this and got installation problem when trying to update
For me it worked to do an OTA update with the same version installed.
For example, my phone was rooted to 1.1.7 and I could not update to 1.1.8. So I downloaded 1.1.7 and updated via OTA. After that I could update to 1.1.8 normally. However, the phone must be rooted again.
For the OTA update you have to download the whole OS (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-os-repo-of-nothing-os.4464039/#post-87101175) and then dial *#*#682#*#* in your phone. Now a menu opens in which you can select the OS by browse in the upper right corner. My data has been preserved during the update.

can you please explain the exact steps?
I'm currently on 1.1.7 rooted with magisk
using some modules and lsposed
Short Guide:
Pretty sure this works across the board with most devices.
If you're doing a OTA and not a manual update:
1. Go into Magisk ~> Uninstall Magisk ~> Restore Images
2. Update via OTA (Do not reboot)
3. Go back into Magisk ~> Install ~> Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)
4. Reboot

How to manually sideload Nothing OS OTA updates on your Nothing Phone 1
To get the latest Nothing OS update onto your Nothing Phone 1 sooner, you can sideload the update manually. Here's how to do it.
www.xda-developers.com
Manually update yourself to the latest and then reroot.

tried manual update and keeps getting different source build is required
I was on 1.1.8 rooted with magisk.
My knowledge isnt the best but my way to update is:
1. Deinstall Magisk.
2. Flash stock boot.img (my version was 1.1.8 so i flash stock boot.img from 1.1.8)
3. Install Update normal over stystem updater
4. Reinstall magsik, done.
I tried it also with restoring magisk and update it over OTA. It worked and it installed, but after I installed Magisk to new slot and restart, it bootlooped 3 times and go back to old version. I think the new Android Versions install the update while restarting. So if you install to new slot with magisk you'll reboot with no OS on the Slot installed. I think the best way is just to uninstall magisk, install update and patch boot img
