Chinese SmartTV competitors (TCL, Hisense and Xiaomi) with AndroidTV - does it need a Google account? - Android TV General

Hi
I have read in a article that the following manufacturers from China
TCL
Hisense
Xiaomi
are gaining more and more market share in SmartTV. I am looking for a new SmarTV (at the moment LG)
A quick web search revealed that they all use AndroidTV as their OS.
Do these manufacturers force me to have a Google account?

My Hisense doesn't require a Google account but you lose some features if you're not logged in.

Well from my understanding you can't download any playstore apps without logging in

Did you get tired of your nokia streaming box 8000?
Resistance is futile. All our arse and belong to google. There is no escape.
I'm glad that I created a few new google accounts on anonymous devices a few years ago. Now google doesn't allow account creation without a cell phone number, unless the account is being created on a smartphone.
Better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it.
I've yet to meet anyone that can stay out of the grip of google services unless they are off-the-grid end timers.
How do you plan to use your new smart tv?

Without a Goole account you cannot install apps from the Playstore, but there are also other stores for Android apps to download and install via USB stick, downloader and ADB sideload

I have one android tv device that has a throwaway google account (that is only used on this device).
I never use this device to watch anything. I just use it to download and install apps from the google playstore. Then, I pull the apks from that device and install them via adb on the android tv devices that I actually use.
All of the devices that I actually use never have had a google account associated with them, and have had google play services disabled (at root account level) from before they were ever connected to the internet.

So it seems like a difficult task, I'm afraid. Unless that's changed in 2.2.1 or newer, of course.
Although, doesn't the Samsung email client allow you to accept any SSL certificates (there's a check box during account setup)? I would assume that means it'll accept "snake oil" certs as well?
And in what way does market issues have anything to do with importing custom certificates, Vanto?

Check if your country is in this list, otherwise you cannot buy paid apps: http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=143779
PS: As per your profile, you are in Macedonia which is not in the list

Ah, so that's what you meant. Sorry, didn't get that from your first post
As seltaeb mentioned, it seems paid apps aren't available for Macedonia (yet).
However, you've created a Google Checkout account? If so, use the app "Market Enabler" (Google it) to gain access to paid apps. I've used this before paid apps were available in Norway, and it worked very well. You'll still be able to pay with your Google Checkout account.
(You can also use Market Enabler to get access to apps that are only available to specific regions for example.)
By the way Android recognizes only .p12 files. Just rename your .pfx to .p12.

Multiple Google Accounts question

I signed out of a Google Account after adding another one, and it kept all my paid apps etc. Is there some downfall to this, or is this an easy way to share my apps with my family? Thanks!

I have 4 Google accounts on mine I generally only use 1 for purchasing apps but occasionally accidentally use a different one. You don't 'lose' apps by changing account.
Once you've downloaded an app, it is possible to take the APK and install it on another device. Some apps phone home though and may call you out on this approach!
All apps you get from the play store are linked to the account and devices you were signed into when you got them. Many paid apps check for the linked account when they run out update to prevent you sharing them.
If you have the same account on multiple devices you can share, I do between my phone and my tablet, but my wife for example has her own accounts and own paid apps.
I don't want someone else with my Gmail account on their device. Mine is setup with 2 factor authentication anyway which requires a code which is sent via SMS to me to compete for extra security.
If you use your pc and log into the play store on the web you can see what apps are associated with that account and which devices they were loaded on.

los911,
So far we have not been able to "Fake Register" the Kindle. Amazon has spent a lot of time
making sure the device logs into their service. I think most of the development is being
spent on upgrades, tweaks and future ROM's. I will talk this over with our development
team but so far I have not heard any discussion on this topic. Maybe someone else
will have a better answer.

Los911,
Sorry, I should have included that with my last response.
Here are the replacements:
1. Root the Kindle http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117
2. Install Google Play Store http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069859
3. Then using Google Play Store, search for (then Install);
Google Play Books > Amazon Books
Google Currents > Amazon Newsstand
Google Play Magazines > Amazon Newsstand
Google Play Store Apps > Amazon Apps Store
Google Play Music > Amazon Music
Google Play Movies > Amazon Videos
Google Play Games > Amazon Games
Google Play Store > Amazon Shop
Google Play Books > Amazon Audiobooks
Dolphin > Amazon Web (Silk)
I think that covers it. The Amazon Photos can be replaced by a number of applications, just search Google Play for
Photo Software, over 100 applications appear, most are free.
Let me know if you have any other questions, we are here from 10am to 10pm PST GMT -8
and we do offer free phone support if you are unable to get the job done through the Threads.
Take Care, Chris Bryant (prokennexusa)

I use Skype, which manages my contacts. Another option is cCloud.
Skype is installed, but not an option to manage my about 150 contacts imported from Outlook.
The point is, I imported all existing contacts to dw contacts, but I'm not able to change anything. When I try to, Amazon calls for a login...
There must be a way around, either with an alternate contacts.app or a fake login.
Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Let me get a little more information so I can help you. You want to "Fake Register" the Kindle due to not having
a credit card, is this the case? If yes, I have great news, we Developers have Fake Credit Card Numbers (IT IS LEGAL)
that can be used when you run into a company that forces you to use a credit card. Let's face it, not everyone has a
card! In order to install apps on your Kindle Fire you will need an American credit card. In order to install Free apps at
all you need to have an American credit card setup under your 1-click settings in your Amazon Account. Amazon
will check if the credit card you have in your account is an American Credit card, but not charge it when you add
it to your account or download a free app.
Below is a list of test card numbers used by developers for validating check out processes when building web
stores – and guess what, they can be used with Amazon ☺. I have of course not checked all numbers but I
am sure you will find one you can use on the list.
Expiration Date has to be a valid date in the future (use the mmyy format). Also make sure to use a US address
(just Google for one, but make sure you don’t ship any purchases to this address). These cards will NOT allow
you to make a purchase, they are use for testing purposes ONLY. There is nothing illegal about doing this as
long as you do not use this in an attempt to defraud a company. These numbers are Publicly known and are
posted on several development websites, this is where I found the information quite a long time ago.
Please send us a PM, we will respond with the numbers to be used for development purposes only.
Huh, thanks a lot for that much information, but I think, you got me wrong...
The KFHD hardware itself (and the price payed) is perfect for my needs, but I do not trust very much in Amazon's way to handle my data. Therefor I'd like to use the KFHD as an ordinary Android tablet with those apps I like. This worked so far, the device is rooted, Google Market and Go Launcher are installed and most Amazon pre-installed apps were replaced by others - except the above mentioned contacts.apk. I couldn't find a working replacement and all other email or social network applications try to access these contacts, but unfortunately all attempts are denied “You have to login to your Amazon account first“.
Thus no need to play around with fake credit card numbers or so...
Anyway, thanks for your help (although it was not the final solution for my "problem").

nakedtruthishere,
I was not sure, so I wanted to offer you the same solution we offer several hundreds that use
the Kindle Fire overseas. These users are just plain stuck due to the Amazon's geographic
rules. So when we sell the Kindle Fire to people overseas this is there solution. It is not
playing with credit card numbers, it is a simple solution to a known problem with Amazon
and it is 100% legal. We have a large corporation with several attorneys who are retained
by our firm, we discussed this with them before publishing this information. Now that I
understand your problem, I can drill down the applications. Do you have Google Play
installed on the Kindle Fire? If yes, search for "Contact App" or "Contact Manager"
you will find quite a few to replace the Kindle Address Book.

I tried several - none of them worked well.
Now I have DW contacts installed. I have got some contacts imported to DW with another app. So far, so good.
When I want to add a contact to the list or try to change any of them, the old song plays: Please login to your Amazon account...
When I renamed or deleted the OEM contacts.apk, DW contacts prompts "not supported by your system".
Maybe you guys could have a deeper look into it?
Thanks again for any help.

Corporate Addressbook from Vivek M. Lyer
Description
Want to lookup your colleague's information in Exchange but find your Android phone lacking?
Unfortunately the Global Address List (GAL) lookup currently available in Android is limited in functionality. It only looks up email addresses and does not return anything more. This could be frustrating when you are trying to use your phone to look up your colleague's phone number or office location.
This application looks up the GAL contact database, and returns ALL data corresponding to the contact that is available on the server. It also allows you to save the contact information retrieved to your phone for easy access.
This app supports GAL lookups on
- Exchange 2003
- Exchange 2007
- Exchange 2010
- Google Apps for Business/Education
- Zimbra
Thanks to the people assisting with translations:
- jgoldhammer (DE)
- hourglass69 (FR)
This app is NOT ad-supported and is completely free and open-source.
See http://code.google.com/p/corporateaddressbook/
FAQ
- Why does the app need so many permissions?
Once the app looks up a name, there are links next to the phone numbers that allow you to call or send a text to the number. In order to make these links work, the app needs the permissions to make calls and send text messages. Also in order to save the search results to your address book, the app needs to be able to access the accounts on your device and add contacts to the accounts.
- Is this app ad supported or paid?
Nopes, the app is completely free (both like beer and speech). There are no ads, and the source code is available on Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/corporateaddressbook/).
- Why are you asking for my credentials? Are you trying to steal my identity
Unfortunately there is no way to access your account information that is configured on your device. The information you enter in the app stays on the device. Please feel free to audit the code if you are still worried.
- This doesn't work, how can I report an issue?
Please feel free to email me, or report an issue at http://code.google.com/p/corporateaddressbook/issues/list
- Why is the app not available in my language?
The developers are, unfortunately, not versed in several languages - but you can help! Please join the translatioon effort at http://crowdin.net/project/corporate-addressbook/.
I have tried both address books and found the first one Smartr Contacts to be the best, although they are both solid products - try them both, they are free.

Installing apps from store without using microsoft account

Hello guys !
Like I have to said. I switched from Win 7 to 8 and everything is perfect except the Store...
Like there wouldn't be a problem of using Microsoft account in Win 8 but every time I turn on my computer or even logout I have to type in stupid password -.- God Dammit !
Is there any way I can download apps from store without using microsoft account ?
Or to bypass that stupid password for logging in ? But I more prefer to be not logged in into any type of account to use my pc.
Just to be safe you know

Sent using Tapatalk HD
For what it's worth, you can't be not logged into *any* kind of account - that's quite simply not possible on a multi-user operating system like NT. Even if you bypass the login interface entirely, you're still running under the SYSTEM account. On the other hand, if you you meant is that you want to avoid being signed into any *online* account, then... yeah, that's sort-of possible on Win8. The store apps are tied, by purchase, to your online account; you can avoid signing into the account to use the PC in general, but if you want Store apps you have to sign into that. It's (exactly) like asking to use Steam apps without signing into Steam
Also in my opinion it is a bad idea to not have a password protecting a pc. Even when I had windows 7 my desktop PC which isn't going anywhere had a password. Its almost like buying a chainsaw that came with some nice gloves and a protective shield on the back of the blade and then removing the shield and throwing the gloves away. You say just to be safe, well what you are proposing is the exact opposite. Computer security is not a joke, now where do you live so I can come and use your pc and perhaps see if your email, PayPal and online banking are set to "remember me"?
Store apps rely on a Microsoft account which means you must be signed into a Microsoft account. You can attempt to sideload apps and a few will work, alot won't.

[Q] Nexus Player with Google Apps accounts?

Has anyone had any luck using their Nexus Player with a Google Apps account? So far I've had none. The NP will let you log in to a GA account but no resources of that account are available (no tv/movies/music/games/apps are available) because the Device Policy app is not installed and not directly installable from the play store. I tried side-loading the app but it just crashes before after the first screen.
I'm not rooted and I'm running stock because I've not done anything but try to login to my account yet.
Using a non-GApps account isn't really an option. While it would work, I wouldn't have access to all the things I'd exactly want to use on the NP like movies/music/games.
Worked for me. I also have 2-factor enabled on my account. Paid apps work. Movies work. YouTube works. I have not tried playing any games, but I did launch Google Play Games and I was able to browse my achievements.

Nope, have not found any way of using this thing. Probably going to try and sell it off before it loses it's value.

Do you have device policy enforced? I don't know if that's an option with free Apps accounts. On my (paid) account I have the "Enforce policies on Android devices" enabled because, well, I want to enforce domain policies on the devices using it. This is what requires you to install the Google Apps Device Policy app. It's that app that I have installed on all my other Android devices that I can't use on the NP. I did side-load it, but it just crashes.

Well, I asked for help in the Nexus device forum, there isn't one specific to the Nexus Player. Of course it went unnoticed.
I had the same issue. I the only solution I could find was to disable 'Enforce policies on Android devices'. It's not ideal but the Nexus Player was useless to me otherwise. Google needs to create a Google Apps Device Policy app compatible with NP.
