Will restoring "Androidness" fix Zoom app issues? - Fire HD 6 and 7 General

Sorry I'm new here, not an expert on the protocol, all I know is I have quite a bit to learn. OK I have an Amazon Fire 7 tablet. When I got it the Zoom app was available on the Amazon app store so I installed it, I'm pretty active on Zoom (at least 2 3-hour meetings a week) and the battery on my poor iPhone wasn't keeping up and the screen was too small. (I have since installed Google Play Store too.)
But there was one principle issue, the display would only show 4 participants per screen, I would need to swipe left to see the fifth and higher participants, and UNFAILINGLY when I then swiped right again I would lose visibility of ALL the participant videos, and the ONLY way I found to restore it that worked was to sign out and rejoin, which is problematic when you wind up having to do it 10 or 12 times a meeting!
So finally I called the problem into Zoom, they reviewed the session logs and said they found no problems so the problem had to be that I was "attempting to install Zoom on an unsupported OS". EXCUSE ME?? If you folks didn't WANT Zoom to be installed on Amazon's tablets then why the he** did you let them put it on their app store, sounds like time to issue an injunction to me...!
Anyway so Zoom has determined they "don't have to fix" the problem, so what I'm trying to figure out is whether the Zoom problem is likely to be in the "launcher" or something else that I can install a different version of (and maybe you could kind of point me in the right direction here somewhere to find the instructions to do that), or if I CAN'T continue to use the tablet how the heck does one find a tablet that is "sufficiently Android" that Zoom ACTUALLY SUPPORTS THEIR OWN PRODUCT??

Touch gestures and Google maps

Been using HD2 for a month already. Haven't actually used any smartphones before, my overall impression is pretty good and I haven't run into many severe problems. The worst incidence was the handset wouldn't boot and kept vibrating all the time. I got a replacement, fortunately, although I never knew what happened.
Enough of irrelevant stuff. I would like to ask a few questions and see if anyone may shed any light on that. I use the stock ROM as shipped.
While browsing with Opera (the builtin one) or Skyfire, double tap will activate the pinch-to-zoom. Therefore, when browsing "conventional" non-mobile oriented sites like Google Maps (yes I know there is one builtin but there are other sites which may require double click but not available as a WM application) you are unable to emulate a mouse double click, but got zooming activated. So, is there any way to workaround this?
Similar question: Some non-mobile oriented sites use frame or iframe in layout, and with desktop browsers you may drag on the divider to resize the frame. By trial and error I managed to do so on HD2 (Opera?) a few times in the past but most of the time it would simply not work. Anyone with similar experience?
Last one - anyone has tried Google Maps 4 on HD2? Is it worth the risk to upgrade (still using the stock version that I believe is 3.x)? I found the street view images is somewhat blurred when compared with those I saw from behind the shoulder of some friend of mine who was accessing a similar area using an iphone. Or is that an illusion only?
I searched here and did not find anything directly useful. My apologies if I missed something here amidst the sea of threads here.
When/Why would you ever need to double click on a webpage?
As I cited, Google Maps is already one. I know of other mapping sites that rely on similar means to zoom in. Some of these sites do not have the +/- buttons for zoom so you must stick with double click on desktop PC.

its 4.xx or whatever, and you can just install it over the other one.
it won't cause any problems or anything like that.

My Kindle Fire Review (after 12 hours usage)

My experience: I have an iPad1, iPad2, HP Touchpad, and three Archos 5" Android tablets... So not too much of a n00b.
Keyboard: The keyboard doesn’t always work for me.. When I first got it, every time I hit the spacebar, it would automatically go down two lines.. And when I hit the delete button, it would go back one space, then it would stop deleting and just repeat the same letter over and over.. While testing this, the Fire crashed.. and when it reset, the keyboard worked better without these issues.. but I still had a lot of typing mistakes as it would be too sensitive.. (kinda crazy that the Fire crashed in the first hour I opened it while typing up an email)
Video: Playing videos from Amazon Prime was fast and sweet! Amazon made it very easy to watch their videos on the Fire. I have not tested MP4 videos I have made for my iPad yet.. Because of size restrictions, I may not do this.
Home screen: Why can you not change the "last viewed" stuff on the top of the Fire.. this is horrible.. I came to work today and of course everyone wants to play with my new Fire.. so they could all see every single website, book, PDF, movie, etc I had viewed last night.. and now because they played with it, I have all the stuff they viewed there as well now.. There should be some sort of incognito mode.. I know this is a personal tablet, but whether someone is behind me when I am in the home screen or someone picks up my tablet at my apartment.. I don't need them seeing what I have been looking at.
Apps: There are a nice amount of apps available already for the Fire.. BUT.. why can’t I remove the apps that the Fire came with? Also, the PDF viewer that comes with the tablet is no good. I side loaded some PDF magazines into the Fire, and they were unreadable on the screen (all jaggy). I then installed the Adobe PDF viewer from the Amazon Market, and the text is much better.. but zooming in and out on a 7” tablet does not make for smooth reading. And why don’t the PDF thumbnail the first page images? The iPad does this right away… all you see on the Fire is the text name of the PDF written over a white sheet. Lastly, I installed Touchdown for the Fire (as the built in email does not include MS Exchange support).. and it works well..except that the client does NOT sync while it is not open.. What the heck is that??
Web: Loading pages like Gizmodo.com was quick.. but it was another issue reading the site.. scrolling down was very jerky and slow.. I know the page is long, but most tech blogs are.. and that is what I would like to read in the back of a cab.
Misc: I wish there were hardware sound control… It would make playing videos/music easier to control, as well as offering page up/page down control for reading. The Fire is a bit heavy and thick.. but for $200, u can’t complain.. I will probably keep using my iPad for reading websites and PDFs… and using the Fire for books and Amazon prime videos.
If anyone knows how to fix the issues above, please let me know.. I know that there is a root out now for the Fire, but I am hoping that there are faster/smoother solutions.
I was able to side load a .m4v file on the Fire, but it wouldn't play until I renamed it .mp4.
The videos were HQ rips for my iPad so that worked great.
I agree on the last item viewed being on the shelf. Wish there was a way clearing that.

On my Nexus I use Mobiplayer and I can control volume by swiping on the screen. I wonder if you load (or sideload) Mobi or a similar video player if you can get this. Anyone know or can anyone check?
Thanks for the review!
the source code will save us!!!

Yes I sideloaded Mobiplayer and the soft volume swiping does work for the Fire. So at least for video playback I can live without a hardware key. Btw I need to enable software decoding by default or some files won't play... maybe I needed to install a Mobi codec but I don't know which one works. Maybe someone can point me to the right direction...
Cheers,
W.
Agree with you. I'm facing same problem.
I installed Swiftkey and feel it is much better than the Amazon default keyboard.
You can remove the items from the Carosel. Refer to instructions at http://mazurk.net/KindleFire.htm
It's a fun toy and I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it (won it at an office raffle) but I'm still kind of lost as to what I'm gonna use it for as I have an iPad 2. Still, I'm having a blast trying to mess with it and hopefully gonna get TWRP installed here soon.

WP8: 2 steps foward, half a step backward

My Titan (WP7) was stolen, so I updated to WP8 earlier than I was planning to.
Aside from about a third of my apps not being available for WP8 yet, I'm enjoying what the new system has to offer.
However, WP8 lost some functionality which is really annoying the hell out of me.
Gifs. In WP7, you couldn't save them, but you could "share" them and email them to yourself. When I try to do this in WP8, it takes one frame from the gif and shares a single frame jpg file. What the ****. Now there is no way to save gif files at all, which is problematic when sites like 4chan don't host them for long.
Unable to uninstall the Help and Tips app. ........ Just... why?
"Remove location data on uploaded images" is no longer an option. As a privacy nut, I loved this. Well, great, now I have to turn off location in pictures all together.
There are a few other things that are missing I'm not remembering, and granted these are all small problems, but now that they've been arbitrarily removed, they're never going to be re-implemented. I'll submit a "feature request" and it'll sit at the bottom, never to be seen...
I got the 820 over the 920 because a non-removable battery is a deal breaker for me. Funny thing is, when the titan first came out everyone was complaining about how hard it is to press the buttons... Well now I can't pick up the damn lumia without accidentally hitting one of the buttons.
I am not sure what your talking about. I recommend that you go to wpcentral forums because they can answer your question. Everyone has left xda in terms of windows phone, all the action here is android.

Yeah, I've noticed that the portal features nothing about anything related to Microsoft, even when every other site was having a field day with all the WP8 related announcements...

Side note: you could alternatively turn off the photo uploading, and leave the geotagging enabled. Then, sync your images to your PC and upload the images to wherever after running them through a de-geotagging program.
Not suggesting this is a *good* option; I hate feature regressions at least as much as anybody. Just a possible way for you to get around the problem.

Test Uber and Lyft apps on your Android Head Unit?

Can someone do me favor and test the Uber Partner app and Lyft app (both in the Google Play Store, links below) on their Android head unit? I'm just curious to see if they display decently in these type of units and if there's any weird behavior when tapping around. No need to signup (if you already have an account reporting on the map display and behavior would be appreciated), any kind of information is useful even from the landing/login/sign up screen.

Lyft - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.lyft.android
Thanks in advance

So both Lyft and UberPartner technically work, but I observed some issues so far (I've only tested things a few times):
in both apps, their UI elements take up so much screen real estate you can't see much of the map. This makes it hard to clearly determine where an incoming request's pick up location is (i.e., some drivers don't accept requests longer than X ETA or distance). for both apps I forget whether the ETA and distance is shown (I've only tested things a few times)
in UberPartner, only half of the full circle countdown fits on the screen/is visible (i.e., during an incoming request)
in Lyft when you try to call passenger the Android system obviously throws an error saying mobile network not found. I've bought Tablet Talk app to get around this, but haven't had time to set it up
in UberPartner, there is no call passenger option (I guess the app detects the device isn't on a mobile network and doesn't display it)
in UberPartner, at the end of the ride at the submit button is cut off at the bottom (you can see the fare amount, the star rating slider and that's it). essentially you can't submit the rating and can't end the ride. if you force close the app, re-open the app and go back online you're hit with the end of ride screen again and basically stuck. the workaround is to force close it, maybe wait 5 to 10 minutes and open it on your phone to successfully end the ride
Essentially in Lyft you can scroll/swipe up and down to get the rest of the screen, but in UberPartner you can't. To fix the UberPartner's submit button issue I've tried changing the app's resolution, DPI and orientation using the App Settings module for Xposed Frameworks, but I've been unsuccessful - I can never get the submit button to be visible. That's where things are at the moment.
I'd love to get the UberPartner app to fit on screen so I can see the submit button and finally use my head unit to fully replace my phone while ride sharing. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. - I'm running a Joying 2818H 7" 1024x600 RK3188 based head unit. The Lyft and UberPartner versions tested are whatever were released within the last two weeks. Xposed Framework 2.7 experimental 1 and App Settings 1.10 were tested.
Just an update... the new/current Uber Partner app with the new sliding buttons works fine from start to finish now (without the need of Xposed and App Settings). The new submit button is visible at the end of a ride and a ride can be completed.

Nevermind
I know this is a old post but dose any one still use this if so how did u get around the picture requirements now.
Yeh Uber app is working fine now in Late 2022 the only problem I am facing is the need to take a photo of myself a lot. I login using my phone to take a photo then go offline and open it on my Head Unit again

Post 5.6.2.0 Update: New Super Annoying Background System Process Causing Major Lag

Hello Fire Folk,
I decided to go ahead take the plunge and let my 2017 Fire HD tablets do their thing and update to 5.6.2.0. Well, the too-good-to-be-true advertising lulled me in anyway ("Show Mode!? You mean I can finally use my Fire Tablet for multi-room audio? And I can stop calling half the Alexa devices in the house "Alexa" while I call the others "Computer" and we can all live as one big happy, desegregated family?! And I can play Spotify on any of the devices and make drop in calls until my heart's content!??" Well, we're not quite there yet...
Anyway, the purpose of my post... Is anyone else noticing the annoying "Ghost" notifications (where it's just a blank white bar at the top, popping up regularly, but if you tap on it/long-touch it enough it eventually reveals its true self) appearing more frequently now? I have three HD 8s and one HD 10 and the background app is running rampant on all of them, resulting in super-frustrating and function-impairing crumminess. Fortunately, the 10 has root and on that tablet I can put this resource-gobbling ghost in its place. However, I'm at a loss on the Fire 8s. In the past I've tried various "no root" app freezing applications but I've never really found one that truly is capable of doing what it claims to be able to accomplish. Does anyone have any tips? I know for a while we could run that one script and make magic happen but can no longer use that trick. :-/
The background ghost app is "Tachyon Calling App" and I gather it's part of the messaging system that is supposed to make the Fire, post 5.6.2.0 update, more "Show"-like. But it runs wiiiild. I'll grabbed a few screenshots which tell a little more about this background pest and will include them below. If you've upgraded to the latest OS and haven't noticed this yet, I hope you never do, but I'd be surprised should you not soon become well-acquainted.
Oh also, my tablets all have Play Store et al. installed and I'm using Action Launcher, if that might have any impact on why I'm experiencing this conflict.
Thanks all! I've been lurking in the Fire section for a long time now and decided to finally make a profile, interact, etc. I am very appreciative to many people here for sharing the awesome findings/discoveries/techniques you've brought forward. I am still holding out hope - some day - even if it's 2046 and these tablets are beyond obsolete/somehow still manage to exist in physical form somewhere in the world, that we will get root access on HD 8! ??????

Having this same problem on a Fire 8 that's got the Play Store loaded. Also my model doesn't even have a sim card, does yours?
This is a new one. Never heard of or seen this app in any Amazon tablet I own (and I own several from the Fire 7 all the way to 10). Just from doing a general search, it appears it belongs to tachyon Mobility. At least that's the most likely culprit. For whatever reason it's on a device I have no idea unless you own a Samsung phone or tablet. I've seen other Samsung apps and Hardware configurations on Motorola devices but never on an Amazon device. If you don't mind uploading a copy of the APK, I can decompile it and take a look inside and see what it actually does or at least try. For now disable it by changing the file name to: appname.apk_ because some system apps like that may become useful in the future. By the way if you are rooted on the HD 10 Google 'rooted activity launcher'. Download the APK from the GitHub source. You can use that activity launcher to launch almost every system app that has a user interface. If this application does you can launch it with rooted activity launcher and see what it does.
