[official] [12] Pixel Experience Custom Rom - Google Pixel 3a Guides, News, & Discussion

Obviously there is a new custom Rom for Pixel 3a (Sargo) based in Android 12
https://download.pixelexperience.org/sargo
I didn' t try ist out yet but just in case someone wants to try

I flashed this, though my 3a is not my daily, just a second phone for playing with custom ROMs. It all looks good without testing too much, faceunlock works.
Can't comment on kernel stuff because I flashed a custom one

I flashed it - more snappy than stock of course and it's a stock rom...works well for that! As stock, it doesn't have some features I like so I moved on but for what it is - it's a gem

I've just installed it and hot diggity dang, it feels awesome.
edit: it even updated today, awesome!

Does the camera work as well as it does on the stock ROM? I want to switch to pixel experience but the loss of gcam worries me. Nice one

I have the same concern. If I moved to PE, will I still be able to use the official GCam from Playstore?

Yes you can, and camera quality is pretty much the same as stock

Okay thanks. I'll try this ROM when I've spare time.

OPO vs D855

Hi all,
New here; long time silent follower/downloader but never posted.
I had a couple of handsets spare in the house and lately have been a bit sick of iOS so decided to dust off the old OPO and G3, and to flash a custom Nougat ROM. I thought I'd end up using the OPO as it's higher spec than the G3.
I've installed AOSP-CAF 7.1 on both phones, with stock Open-GApps.
The interesting thing is that despite the OPO having 50% more RAM and the exact same CPU, the D855 feels much snappier and gives a better user experience. Any ideas on why? Is it the kernel? Bummer at the minute as I'll be forced to use the G3, even though it only has 16GB and 2GB, also with the lower res front camera. With the display being higher res as well, I'd have expected the OPO to trounce the G3! Any ideas?
Thanks!
Change ROM ?
Or change the kernel :highfive:
Seriously, I think that is due to the kernel settings. Sometimes (i remember on Omnirom),some roms need other kernel settings to feel better and smoother

Why? I was wanting something stable & fast; I gather Lineage has bluetooth & Android Auto issues which are both deal breakers for me.

Hmmm, thought it may have been the kernel. Looks like it's some trial and error then!
Thanks.
Lol even stock Cos13.1 of OPO will perform better than Lg G3 for sure.

That's what I thought too, but when I got the ROM running on the G3 it was definitely smoother. Any suggestions for ROMs/Kernels?
Definitely want Nougat and definitely minimalist/stock Gapps. Don't like the funky custom looks on a lot of builds.

This is a stable rom based on latest lineage os with builds updated regularly and optimized kernel for as smooth as it gets performance.

No,Bluetooth works perfectly fine. Moreover if you encounter any other issues, the developer of this rom is kind enough to fix it for you.
Had a look through the thread for it, looks promising. All this though, and I dropped the OPO last night. The repair shop has it now, and they've never heard of one. Won't read the sim. Eeek.

What is/are your favorite ROM(s) for the G4 Play?

So I've been meaning to try out some new ROMs lately and I'm wondering if any of yallz have any favorites or recommendations to throw my way. Currently I'm running the latest Resurrection Remix build for this beloved device and have been stuck on it for a while. It seems many of our ROMs have stopped in terms of development so I'm looking for direction in what to try. Thanks!

Many thanks that's next on the list! Haven't even glanced in that direction yet.
Edit: How is it in terms of battery life? As of now I can go about 9 hrs with heavy use and no charge.

It's an efficient ROM on most platforms (typical for AOAP). I do not run it on my G4P as stock MM w/Xposed and a few kernel tweaks is a better match for my needs in this device.

I gave lineage a shot as one of my first ever custom OS's but it seemed to be lacking in customization. Last I remember there's no stable substratum support or anything of that sort and I love my colors haha. Maybe I'll give it another go though. Feel free to add anything to persuade me!

Yes I ran a deodexed MM stock rom for a while with xposed but I feel as if xposed gets messy (could just be me going crazy with the availabilities.) Definitely lots of fun tho. A couple hours ago I installed xposed over RR just to see what would happen and it didn't do me over like I thought. It worked well but xposed isn't the route I wanna take at this time.
Thanks for your answers!

Of the ROMs mentioned RR is probably the most customizable (w/o add ons) followed by AEX and Lineage. Each suits a different audience. Enjoy the hunt.
i have been on the rom that no one talks about much and i have been on it for months.i try to switch but keep falling back..its the VIPER ROM...its been very stable..good battery life...everything works..GPS is best among all roms..i dont know what they have done but i get a fix pretty fast...i am looking for an alternative but havent found anything that comes close in stablity and function.it may not be as customizable as RR or aospextended...but its very smooth ..even on stock kernel.give it a try if you may....https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=889964283620760488

[Discussion] Favourite rom and why?

Thought I'd start this discussion just for a place to talk about what rom we're all running at present, for what reasons etc. to perhaps offer and overview of what choices are available for our great device.
I'm currently on Oreo Beta 1 - runs very quickly with such impressive performance, loving the stock camera (though keen to see what future software updates can offer...), with my screen brightness down to 5-10% indoors and on WiFi I'm getting anywhere between 10-12 hours screen on time.
Will be curious to run Lineage when it comes official/stable and will love it when Google camera port is running nicely on our phones as definite enhancements can be had!

Nice! I'm curious of it, how do you find it compared to stock? In terms of speed (can't imagine this device being any faster lol), battery life and of course the seemingly dreaded question... Camera quality?
Right now on official OmniROM 8.1. It's fast, extremely stable, has excellent 10 hour screen on time for battery life over 1.5 days(my usage), and has excellent OMS theming support with nice minor OS tweaks and addons like OmniSwitch Recents replacement.
I was running official Oreo OOS but didn't care for the lack of proper theming, but the camera is a tad better and battery life was about the same. Maybe a little less than Omni.

Sounds good to me! Is it the case that some Google camera ports work better on none OOS ROMs? Also with OmniROM, can you run that encrypted?
Try the Validus by Ground Zero Team, rock stable and gives outstanding battery life, lost 5% for 1st hour of screen on.

No tweaks beside my own changes of rom content. Camera is "snap" camera as seen in many roms, have not checked picture quality yet tho. Same goes for other camera apps.

I don't think the ports run any better or worse depending on the ROM.
Omni runs encrypted by default..
Codename phoenix 8.1 because it's stable, fast and great battery life, plus the right customisation features
And you can run it encrypted too

thats great. i can make use of my otg drive then..
i just need to start reading now coz im running my 5t stock unrooted.
Only ever used three ROMs on this device. First was the stock ROM the device came with (OOS 4.7.3), didn't get to experience it much because i flashed FreedomOS 4.7.4. I loved that ROM on my 3T. Had a lot of features. But i kinda lost interest because most of what i found useful in the 3T weren't yet implemented on the 5T ROM. And the dev took his sweet time releasing updates (not that taking time is wrong, it's just that i need my updates as quickly as possible). So i flashed OOS Oreo Beta 1. I'm loving it so far. I'll probably try out LOS when they release a stable 8.1 build.

Possible Cons of Switching to LOS-based ROMs right now?

Hi, I am planning to switch from an OOS based ROM to an LOS based ROM in the next few days. I want to know, if there are still problems with the camera in those ROMs. Like is the quality (notably) worse than on OOS, do these ROMs support the 2x zoom and the Portrait Mode (the real one, not the [admittadly good] one from GCam)? If there are problems, are there ROMs with the original OOS camera and so on where they might not exist? Are there any other real problems?
And in common: are there any great and not-so-well-known LOS-based ROMs for this phone? I am planning on using some ResurrectionRemix version (was very happy with it on my KLTE).
Thanks in advance

First: thanks for the quick answer, but that's not quite what I'm looking for. I had hoped someone with some experience with tue different ROMs could answer this directly. I looked at those threads of course, but it seems the only fitting answer was that this phoenix rom should work.

Now as you already know that the oos camera is only available on cnp, there's no alternative on every other custom rom you need to use the shipped camera or google cam or other 3rd party ones.
Quality is always a very subjective thing...

Aahh ok thx
I'm on LineageOS 15.1 now, and there's more positives than negatives when moving from OOS.
The ROM is smaller, zero bloatware, no spying, increased speed, increased battery life, & best of all a built-in privacy guard with an updated Trust module: https://www.xda-developers.com/lineageos-trust-centralized-interface-security-privacy/
I'm running without any Google junk on here so life is good.
Only downside is, to make the switch you have to back up all your apps via Titanium Backup and wipe everything off the phone completely. The restore the apps and data after you get the new OS on there.
Make sure you flash the latest version of OOS before you begin (assuming you are not already on it) to get the bootloader and modem updated.
Enjoy!
You don't have to wipe your phone after flashing lineage. Just flash bluspark kernel for custom ROMs, it supports encryption.

Camera quality is largely dictated by the hardware, but the OEM LineageOS camera is okay. I don't play with it much, too few features.
If you use something like OpenCamera, Snap Camera or this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/themes/mod-oneplus-camera-jpg-quality-to-100-t3714595
...you can get better results. YMMV.

Best custom ROM?

Hi, I'm thinking of installing my first custom ROM on my OP 8 pro as I have got bored of oos 11 and battery life isn't good enough for me. What roms would you recommend?
My main criteria are:
Best battery life, oos Camara and gallery, smooth and responsive.
Thank you!

They update about once a week, a couple of days after the Lineage update OTA's work fine.
AICP, CrDroid, Jaguar, Evolution x.
I was happy with CrDroid but tbh the best experience is OOS11 for me.
There is no best ROM, although I've had a soft spot for Evo X... Ticks every box
I like AICP, but OOS11 is providing a quite nice experience as well.
