[GUIDE] The Youtube Vanced experience in Android TV - Android TV General

This is not meant to be a comprehensive guide for installing and using YouTube Vanced, but to help with usage experience and what to expect if you try to use this AWESOME YouTube alternative app on an Android TV Smart TV device. I CAN'T GUARANTEE THAT THIS WOULD WORK IN "ALL" ANDROID TV SMART DEVICE.
I really don't know if there is a special version of Vanced for Android TV, this guide is for the regular app for smartphones.
What do you need?
- You WILL need a keyboard with mouse (trackpad) input for using correctly the app. There are many, expensive and generic (something like the Logitech k600 is great in the expensive side, and the little Chinese ones with RGB and Nokia old batteries should work too).
- Side-load the official app installer (Vanced Manager) in your TV (depending the manufacturer this is easy or not to do).
- Recommended: "Sideload Launcher" app by the great Chainfire (on the Android TV Google Play store), to be able to easily launch Youtube Vanced in your TV.
The app:

- You can side-load the Vanced Manager apk and install it in your TV.
- It can be directly downloaded from your TV if you have the possibility or can be downloaded elsewhere and copied with a pen drive.
- Then, the TV could have a way to install apps directly (mine does, a TCL) or you can use, for example, FX File Explorer that can be obtained from the Android TV Google Play store. It may ask for permission to install the Vanced Manager depending the way you do it, or give the 3rd. party app the permission to install it.
- Note that if you have activated "developer options" and configured to force-close any app on the device other than the main active one, Vanced Manager will fail when attempting to install the app.
The main problem using Vanced Manager in an Android TV:
- As is not meant to be used in a TV but in touchscreen devices, once installed, you can't even pass the main screen with a "regular" remote. This is because how inputs are detected. So, here is when the keyboard with a trackpad starts to be essential.
- Using a keyboard with "mouse input" you can pass the main screen and correctly download and install Vanced Manager. It's necessary to allow "unknown sources" and give permission to Vanced Manager for installing the app.
What to expect once installed:
- You need to configure it extensively and to your liking (In my case I disable all publicity and configure the general quality of the videos. I just want to see videos and nothing more with YouTube in a TV).
- Depending on the configuration it could be keeping the videos running in the background when you try to watch other things. This is solvable completely with the correct configuration in the app.
- Sometimes the inputs are not detected correctly, but with a "mouse input" available, it works almost perfectly. I recommend to activate accessibility controls to easily skip parts.
- "Youtube shorts" can be seen, but the app stretches to widescreen the videos and rotates the controls.
- If "full screen" is pressed accidentally, the app rotates the screen. This is solved by pressing "right click" mouse input equivalent in your keyboard (the "back" function). The curiosity of this is that everywhere it's said that you "can't see comments on YouTube for Android TV", but with this behavior of the app, you can! (but rotated ).
- You can "navigate" the list of videos with "two fingers scroll" or moving up and down with a cursor, if it's available in the keyboard [it may not be with a "regular" cursor (arrows) but a "directional" one (like a pad)].
Conclusions:
- For me, YouTube Vanced is amazing and even essential for many reasons that are not the focus of this guide.
- The few quirks of trying to using it in a type of device that the app is not meant to be used (like having a keyboard with trackpad as "mandatory") are totally surpassed by the benefits of having Vanced usable in a Smart TV.
Hope you'll be able to enjoy Vanced on your TV, and please give support to The Vanced Team!

Would be nice to see a companion music app for SmartTubeNext. STN itself is freaking amazing. Casting to it works perfectly as well.

that would be sweet. but it works good for ur music also. its all on YouTube anyway

Of course! It doesn't have (for me at least) all that I like in Vanced (RIP), but thanks for the alternative. NewPipe is simpler, but works well enough too for my needs.
EDIT: I misplaced the reply to the quote.

From Google Translate: "how you change YouTube Vanced as default app. when we ask google assistant".
Sorry but I don't use Google Assistant and, in fact, I have it disabled and the app uninstalled from my TV. However, you could try disabling the official YouTube app that comes with the TV OS to see if then Google Assistant detects Vanced as if it is the main YouTube app.
In some cellphones there is a section in the configuration that allows to edit what app should open with certain "link / triggers" that opens an app. So there you can check what app opens regarding that links, if you have the option to open apps instead of browsers in the cellphone enabled.
I really don't know if that exist on Android TV in some form. I didn't came across a setting like that if I remember correctly, nor anything related in the "developer options".

Thanks for the advice! In my case I tested the "cheap" chinese keyboards that come with trackpad and work well enough, but finally I bought a "Logi K600" wireless keyboard from Logitech, and works like a charm! (in my TCL Smart TV).
The ONLY thing you can't do for controlling the Smart TV with it is turning ON. That function works with infrared. But, you can turn it OFF.
Recent Android TV upgrades changed the way you do "backwards", but you can still do that perfectly with the Logitech keyboard.

Airplay fully working and Mirroring too.. AndroidApple Tv allinOne

airplay is working on the fire tv including mirror mode using AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waxrain.airplaydmr
I PAID FOR IT and then sideloaded it using root uninstaller on my phone to make a backup
launched app and made no changes to the default settings
it works perfect
note
the bbc iplayer works on my ipad too but you must enable mirror mode before playing a video the video then shows fullscreen
some times you may get audio and a black screen found if I hit home on the fire remote and then select airplay/mirror device again on ipad it plays perfect again
this black screen bug only happens in mirror mode a minor problem(just hit home and start again)
android and apple tv rolled in to one for an extra $4.90
So this is for mirroring your iPhone on the screen through the fire TV or can this mirror an android phone through the fire TV also?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
this is for iPhone/ipad ios airplay to the fire tv
not android screen mirroring
but there are some airplay type apps for music like doubletwist on android that could use this setup to play music/photos etc
but the mirroring is only for ios devices
I like this app. The developer is very responsive if there are any problems. He has fixed 2 seperate issues for me, and usually responds quickly. I had installed this app when I first got my FTV. After a few days I started getting error messages because the app wasnt installed through the Google Play store. I emailed the developer and he fixed that for me within a day.
AirBuddy for Airplay - music
Airbuddy from amazon' android appstore works great for music. Upgraded via inapp purchase - I primarily use it for music only.
How are these apps different than AllCast? I know one can cast an iDevice to your FTV but AllCast can do movies, photos & music right?

Well being able to use your iOS devices and mirror it on your TV can be very handy. (in example show Safari on the TV).
I downloaded (and paid!) the pro version from the app store, extracted the .apk and sidelined the app on the Fire TV. It works, that's really cool!!

I can attest that it works great and installs painlessly from the Amazon FireTV app store. WaxRain has provided great support on the application.
I can attest that this app is awesome. Works flawlessly 99% of time. BTW, jailbreak your ios device and install movie box. Airplay on fire tv is great. MovieBox blows away XBMC in quality and stability.
Do you know if they make a similar app for android phones. I've tried a bunch and none mirror the screen they just send certain things like music and video

Hi,
I use thise http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...plugin-20&creativeASIN=B00L5HQRGS]AirReciever
*notice 180 coins back.
It does pretty much every thing you can mirror your ipad screen and the lag is low enough so you can easely play games such as the walking dead episode 1 & 2.and other action adventure games. (the audio latency is set well below 200ms with no problems using the iPad3) besides Airplay it also supports DMR/DNLB, and if you have a MAC you can use it as a extra screen natively. this can also be done on PC using the bit limited AirParrot. And it's developed for aFTV.
mirroring lag
Does any one know if mirroring is going to be improved? There seems to be a lot of lag for games my kids play. I tried both AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO) and AirReceiver but both lag with sonic transformed, bubble guppies and more

If you go to the app's website, you can download the "AirPinPCSender" app and install it on your Windows box. I have it on my laptop and it works flawlessly to mirror my laptop to FTV
I just purchased both a
Lenovo Pro Yoga 2
and
Macbook Air 13
Trying to decide which I like better.. while the touch screen is cool and being able to use it as a tablet is fun on the Lenovo - I've had enough wireless connectivity issues that it's been frustrating (not sure if it's windows 8.1 or the card in the computer) - but my old HP stays connected flawlessly so I know it's not the wireless.
I rec'd the Air today - so I'll play with that and make my decision. I already bought and apple TV which works well enough, but the AirParrot app can only mirror the image of the PC and leaves a bar around the entire thing - there's some pretty evident lag as well just browsing.
I originally was going to go w/ the Fire TV and just found out about this app you guys are talking about.
So, essentially I can do a Fire TV (and download the app for airplay?) and download the app to make the apple stream to Fire? I can do both Mirror and 2nd screeN?
Thanks!!
Thank you
Thank you for the idea
Anyone know of a way to mirror an android phone on the fire tv without root? I know AllCast beta can, but iirc you need root and I'm trying to to root my work phone.
Hi folks. For those of you who have this app installed could you please let me know how it good it is at Airplaying video clips captured by the IPHONE / IPAD itself? So I'm not referring to online video (such as iplayer / youtube) being sent to the device, instead I'm asking about video's actually taken on the iphone?
I shelled out for AirReceiver app and although it's good for Airplaying photos and web video content, its crap for video clips cpatured from iphone (LOTS of buffering and really slow).
Also a question for WaxRain, if I pourchase the app, how many devices can I install it on? I myself have 3 FireTVs in my house.
Thanks.

What is the version / date for the ES File Explorer APK? One techie reviewer noted back in 2014 that it contained a virus - so I have been reluctant to install it. This app after all gets access to almost everything within the box. Can some give me a warm fuzzy feel for this app?
On a separate note - can someone suggest an App that will access my DLNA NAS Server?

Found one just now - called UPnPlay - very simple, fast and gets the core job done and I like apps that stick to that principal. And everything works just with the FTV2 remote !!!
Once you find the video, it can push it to my Samsung SmartTV (the TV popped up a message asking if to "Allow" / "Deny" request) ... or use the VLC app. I used the VLC app and its FAST !
I wonder if VLC has a way to fetch it directly?

The current version on Google Play ... I have to use the wireless K400 keyboard. One the video starts, the original remote allows you to pause and play the video. I am fine with that.
When I installed the youtube app (android tv), the casting stopped working. Is there any workaround this?
i'm in the uk and would add : mediahhh, mobdro, uk tv now, tube+ (youtube alternate), showbox, vimeo, soundcloud, mixcloud, netflix, ted, and tunein radio to the list of essential apps.
I've plenty of devices for browsing the web & the like so I've got my firestarter powered fire tv stick only running media apps ... to think I nearly binned it on ebay before i'd discovered the firestarter front-end & the fire utility app. *facepalm*

I know Android TV's like Sony have these apps, but I can't seem to find them anywhere to use on the nVidia Shield TV
Any ideas?
I don't know that the TV's actually do. It's a shame they are dragging their heels over bringing these apps to android TV. You have a couple of options really...
1) Install SPMC (or KODI). There are 3rd party add-ons for BBC and ITV, FTV guide will give you live TV channels. Kodi can be customised nicely , I've set it to auto start and use it as a homescreen for the SHIELD.
2) You can "mod" your SHIELD TV and flash an android ROM on to it. This will mean you can then use the Android apps as you're no longer on Android TV. This might be a bit too extreme for you though.
How you can make shield to auto start kodi? Could you give us some step by step please..
Thanks..

Install that...open it. Choose which app you want to autostart and no you don't need to root the SHIELD TV. I use SPMC as it's being tailored for the SHIELD TV but you can use KODI instead
any apps on demand?
the nvidia shield tv has chromecast (now google cast) built into it, casting all4 to it from another device works better than sideloading the all4 app. that's the best way to get all4 on it, as there's no all4 kodi add-on.
you can sideload My5 if you get an apk from another device, the demand 5 kodi add-on is dead. you need to use right stick mouse emulation, as it's a touchscreen app.
you can also sideload itv hub, but the kodi add-on is better.

Great post!
I don't personally do the casting and I use Android not Apple stuff. However I do know Kodi has Airplay compatibility. I've never tried it but maybe that will help iphone/ipad users do the same trick?
I never thought of extracting the My5 apk from my molly...thank you! I might just give that a try
I believe that you can cast from the ios version of all4 as well, yes.
if anyone has a working my5 apk please direct it this way, have not found one apk that will work, always some issue.

you're probably finding that it's working as best as it's going to. you can only navigate with the right stick emulating a mouse, and it doesn't work great doing that either.
I got it by installing it on my phone then using es file explorer to back it up.
I've got it but it gives error message when trying to play any video, both on my phone and shield TV
To be fair regarding apps on demand try Pluto it's linking to youtube live channels and other sources, and also actually make a playlist once in youtube live to fill with playlists of the youtube live channels you want click the + next to playlist when it's open right top of the list. That's one set of live on demand you can use which is none commercial tv oriented. But for true tv on demand get a smart tv with it built in,or a tv box which is made to have the on demand services incorporated otherwise use kodi or spmc and add on demand channels from vido addons section.
ok somehow my5 decided to work on shield (still no luck on phone) so i have bbc iplayer, itv, all4 and my5. uk catch up services sorted!!

Would you be able to post the apk's of the above apps? I'd love to be able to get the full line up of UK catchup apps in one box
Thanks!
+1
I'd like to get a copy of the APK's that work with the shield. Thanks
ok my5 i just downloaded from playstore on my phone then transferred the apk, same with 4od - if you dont have a phone or pc then just download on shield using aptoide or chrome. bbc iplayer already installed on shield but i use the kodi addon instead, itv player i installed through aptoide and it works but i use the kodi addon aswel with this one. there is actually catchup services for channels dave and really aswel as a kodi addon.
can you navigate with remote and press enter/select on these apps?
anhyone got channel 5 working?
I use the Nvidia game controller and it works on that, using the right analog as a mouse and A as the right click. Works perfect for me
My5 doesn't work on shield TV anymore since the update - just so you guys are aware.

Apps that work with Nividia Shield Pro 2019

I am able to add apps, so that is not a problem. However, some android tv apps will not load. Is there a link that I can go to for apps that work with the new Nividia Shield standard and pro?
While I am not aware of any such link, and use the non-Pro (32-bit only), I can tell you, what works for me:
* Firefox for Amazon TV (all, except non http(s) URL, like intent:// and it also seems not to be able to download files, at least no .apk files and no voice input, which sucks especially for a browser). You can get version 4.5 (not sure, whether this is the latest) here. Just scroll down the page, which is in German, but you should be able to find it.
* KODI seems to work, as reported by others, but I have problems when entering some resource lists. I just installed it yesterday and did not yet look into it too much.
* NOVA (open source fork of Archos Media Player, which does not work on the Shield TV anymore)
* X-Plore - the best file manager for Android, ever!
* F-Droid - usable, but not optimized for Android TV. That means, you can search for apps and install them. But you can not easily browse the categories.
* Tachiyomi (on F-Droid) - Manga downloader, seems to work, though I did not download yet. But I can access all controls.
* all the streaming video services (Amazon Prime Video, Haystack TV, German TV stations and streaming services) I installed are working flawlessly.

Shield TV for watching a TV in the UK

Hi Guys,
I am thinking of buying the Shield to replace my Sky box but have a few questions please.
1. If I buy HDHomeRun box and connect to Shield, will Shield's native tv channels app recognize HDHomeRun and display the channels properly? Or it will only work with HDHomeRun app? I want to use the native app as it allows to add more sources and has prettier / more integrated interface.
2. Will the native app automatically get correct EPG and live show descriptions without me having to setup anything else?
3. Can I record the shows from native app or should I purchase HDHomeRun subscription for that? If its through subscription, will the native app record the shows or only HDHomeRun app can record?
4. What about catchup tv? Can native app search and play catchup tv? If not, what are the options to set this up?
I basically want to have all-in-one option for both watching, recording and catchup so that all can be done via native channels app (or some other third party app) without me having to open seperate apps for catchup and waching. I want something to mimic Sky box.
Is this possible?
Thanks in advance.
