Samsung A40 crashed while updating, OS not starting, Recovery Console seems to be dead end - Samsung Galaxy A40 Questions & Answers

EDIT: I close this thread. A Member tried to help, but seems like the partition was unrecoverable damaged and the data are lost now. Thanks to everyone that put time and efford in reading and helping.

Hello,
my name is Robert and i'm trying to save the data (pictures/videos) of the crashed Samsung A40 of a friend.
What happened? She started a recommended Android system update before going to sleep and in the morning the phone welcomed her with an error message (picture 1). I was able to start the recovery system (picture 2) but except for wipe data / factory reset (what i did not try just yet) nothing seems to work.
I'm a J2EE developer with some experience, but i never tried to repair a crashed Android OS so far. So maybe I missed something that would solve the problem more simple, than what i've tried ... which is:
> Apply an Update via Odin / SD Card / ADB
Odin (installed to my desktop PC) isn't able to see the device / port ... most likely because i'm unable to open the debug port via dev-tools (android os is not starting).
I've also tried to put the latest OS version including updates (A405FNXXS3BTI3_A405FNODX3BTF4_DTM) to an SD card and install it from there. I'm able to mount it, but (after all i have been reading) the error i get when i execute the install command, seems to indicate that KNOX denies it.
I'm also able to connect the device to my desktop PC. Command "ADB devices" lists the phone with a (port?) number and allows me to execute "ADB sideload" ... but i dont know what to do with it :/
> Apply some TWRP magic
Obviously i can't install the app via app store so i have to do it manually. The TWRP howto section for the A40 phone says i've to root the device first using magisk. The magisk howto section for the A40 phone says: in order to root my phone i will have to wipe data at least once before i can put magisk to good use. Well ... thats exactly what i do NOT want to do :/
So, am i missing something here? Or did i misunderstood some part of any solution i looked up so far? Or is it simply impossible to get back the data at this point?
I appreciate any hint you can give me.
Thanks in advance!
Robert

OnePlus Two unable to Root, Fullscreen Popup-ads and more!

SOLVED: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/solved-cant-flash-twrp.268957/page-3#post-10876574
Okay, so all i needed to do was skip the "fastboot reboot" stage, and everything worked wonderfully. Once again XDA freaking ROCKS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey all! I've got my OnePlus 2 for a while now, and its one of the 'chinese' models i think..
Now! I'm having some serious issues with this phone, The phone itsself is AMAZING, more than i could ask for, But for some reason, the device came pre-loaded with some BS apps, some chinese apps, etc, etc..
The issues i'm having is that SOMETHING that they pre-loaded into the systems apps is causing me FULL-SCREEN pop up ads, and my ADB REFUSES to work!! Fastboot has been working without problem, and i followed the steps HERE to no avail, my device is detected in all states through "fastboot devices" command, but any attempt at meddling with my phone using ADB seems to fail.. Also my OTA Updates always fail, It will NOT let me update my phone by any of the normal means.. Which is also incredibly strange!
When i try to use "adb devices" command, my device refuses to show up (Yes, USB Debugging is enabled, yes, i've tried google) although for some reason when i use ADB to flash the recovery, it seems to go through the motions, tell me that the custom recovery (Newest twrp for OP2) has been succsessfully installed, When i attempt to reboot into recovery, i get the default OP2 recovery screen!!
It has been driving me completely mental, And i really need your help XDA, some of the names of the system apps that were pre-installed are sending information in bulk to servers in china, and i cant stop it.. I need to make this phone compeltely fresh!
**NOTES**
Fastboot works
Adb (kinda?) works
OTA Updates DO NOT WORK (Download okay, but any attempt to change the device in any way seems to fail!)
Weird /system apps that are doing weird things, and shouldnt be there
Screenshot of Fullscreen-pop up ads
Please XDA! Im getting quite desprate to make this device 'mine' and it just isnt working out.. Let me know if i missed any info!
[SOLVED (Factory Reset)] Failed Root Attempt - Will not boot past SAMSUNG boot logo
As the title implies, I've failed in my attempt to root my S7 Edge. I can access the custom download tool as well as the TWRP tool that I installed via Odin. However, I have no SD card and my attempts to use ADB have been unsuccessful. Right now I am looking for an option to reset my device to factory settings. I don't care about my previous data, as this is a relatively new phone. However, I believe my warranty is voided, and that is why I am posting here.
What are my options at this point? If it helps, a micro SD is arriving via Amazon tomorrow afternoon. Ultimately, I'd like to be able to install a custom ROM or root my existing Nougat that I started with (my original intention).
As for how the process may have failed, the tutorial I watched didn't seem to make it clear that I had to enable USB debugging. I enabled OEM Unlock, but not USB Debugging. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :good:
EDIT: Smart Switch does not support the device for emergency recovery. I really think I messed up my phone
EDIT 2: After suddenly disconnecting during the download process of a fresh firmware via sammobile, I restarted the device to reach an error screen telling me to use Smart Switch Emergency recovery. However, my device was not supported. Following a guide online, I clicked on the More tab at the top right corner of the Smart Switch program and chose "Emergency software recovery and initialization". I entered the relevant information for my device and the recovery process began (fingers crossed). After it has completed, I am now once again booting my factory firmware. I'll leave this post here because I couldn't find a similar post on the first couple pages of the forum or with the search function.
Now, can anyone direct me to a proper beginners' guide to rooting the S7 Edge? I'm fresh off of iOS, which I've used and been jailbreaking for the past nine years. I thought it would only slightly more complex, but I see due to the many different versions of the same device, rooting can be quite tricky.
Edit 3: New question which I can't find the answer to anywhere... Do you need an SD card to root? I'm resetting my phone for the second time now. Got a boot loop after using ADB sideloader to install supersu.
Where did you get the stock firmware? I have the unlocked sm-g935u... made an unbelievable stupid mistake and my three day old s7 edge is partly functional (only bare essentials), but whatever I did before wasn't wiped when I did a factory wipe so my phone thinks it's rooted even though it most certainly is not. (And many features and apps won't work bc of it. )
I can't find anything useful about theNougat firmware. I'm really desperate. My company bought me this and i broke it within a week. :'(
Oneplus 5 stuck on setup?
EDIT: Solution was to sit with OP5 technician which flashed my ROM to Oxygen 4.5.1. After this didn't do it, I RMA-ed it and got a new OP5.
EDIT: TL;DR: After updating OP5 to 4.5.5, It doesn't recognizes sim nor wifi, and can't rollback to 4.5.3 that did and stuck on phone setup (needs wifi). ADB devices is empty, I have Google USB Driver from SDK, Windows 10
Hello,
I just got a new OP5 today.
Opened it in the store, came with Oxygen 4.5.3 outta the box.
I putted the sim in, and I connected to the store's wifi, all was good and even had a phone call to my mother to check if the mic and speaker are working well.
Then when I got home, I upgraded the OS to 4.5.5 through the settings, where Android suggested. I'm new to OP and android (moved from iphone 5) and so if there is a right way to do it, and that's not it, I wouldn't have known.
Then, OP5 didn't recognize the sim anymore and couldn't start the wifi (switching it on wouldn't work, it would do nothing), so I tried Factory reset. Unfortunately it didn't reset the OS as well and now I'm stuck outside can't use my sim card or connect to my home wifi to setup the device.
Tried installing OP5 usb drivers (show when connecting the OP5 to PC) and press the power button and lower speaker volume together, then flush the 4.5.3 OS through USB, but it doesn't recognize ZIP folder and when I tried to unzip and send boot image (cmd->"adb sideload boot.img) it started and then failed at 0%.
Please help, the phone right now is unusable.
Tried the Factory reset through settings, but it took so long I thought it was stuck, so I did it through recovery screen.
Sounds like you got a lemon... I'd take it back and see if they'll swap it for another. Less than a week should be replaced immediatelly, at least that's been my experience here in Oz...
Why should it be replaced in less than a week? Also, isn't there a fix for adb problem so I could flash 4.3.5? Maybe a remote takeover?
Mine had 4.5.3 on it when I got it, updated to 4.5.4 then manually downloaded full rom, placed on internal memory and flashed 4.5.5 through the settings.
Had zero problems with WIFI before, during and after the update. No problems since.
Generally updating to a higher firmware version won't allow you to regress back to the lower, not sure with Oneplus as this is my first.
I'd also, if you can boot into Android go to settings nd check my IMEI numbers to see if they have been wiped (this can cause the sim to not be recognised) . If you have no IMEI then that is a BIG problem which will require an RMA unless you had backed up your efs files which from your description I doubt..
If the IMEI is OK I would download the full firmware version from here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3628190 - then using PC put the FULL ROM onto the internal memory then go to recovery and flash.
I'd also then unlock my bootloader(Just remember though that the phone will wipe all data after unlocking bootloader) and install TWRP - don't forget to 1st enable developer mode in settings and then allow usb debugging and OEM unlock - make a backup of the working stock rom and put it somewhere safe - home PC, in case this happens again. Best idea is to use the all-in-one tool, here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...l-skipsoft-android-toolkit-oneplus-5-t3625419 thankyou MSkip.
I can't pass the "Connect to Wifi" in the initial setup of the android, as it finds no wifi networks (but of course there are, when I use the sim in my iphone it works properly and there are wifi networks). So I don't know how can I get the IMEI number.
Right now my PC recognizes the OP5 connected via USB, but "adb devices" bring back empty list.
I think that once I get that working, I could unlock the bootloader. But I can't seem to be able to enable dev mode in settings - I can't get there.
I can only get to the recovery screen beyond the initial steps of setting up android.
Right now there is no important data on the phone and I have my laptop which is virgin to ADBs and Drivers (didn't use it to try to resolve it).
What driver and where do I get the right ADB so I could load 4.5.3 from usb to the phone?
Might be wrong but I thought you could skip the wifi select screen on the setup wizard.
If you can get to Android you need to go to settings, scroll down to about phone and tap around 8 times on build number to enable developer settings.
You might be able to, might, pull down the settings menu in the wizard and bypass the wizard.
It doesn't seem like I can skip it. Can't pull down a menu or anything
I guess only Oneplus can help me now?
Do you have any suggestion on fixing adb so it would recognize the OP5?
No, you need to enable debugging in developer settings for ADB to recognise.
Time to RMA...
Welp it is a pickle.
Going to go live chat with OP "level 2" representative.
See if they wipe the phone out and restore an older ROM.
If that't not going to work, RMA it is :/
Shame. A new phone. Took only one picture with my dad when we opened it back at the store. nothing else.
Unfortunately bad things can happen... You just got to be the one who got the dud this time round.....
Here's hoping it's the last time....
you can force update to a fresh installation of 4.5.5 by putting the 4.5.5 full zip into your phone in a folder called "update". Reboot to recovery im assuming you have stock recovery and follow the steps until you find the option that says something along the lines of "Update manually". It will detect if you have an update folder stored on your phone and it will begin reinstalling OOS 4.5.5. It sounds like a software problem but could be a hardware problem. Rule out the first option before RMA the latter.
When I connect the OP5 to the PC there are no folders under it (Computer -> OP A500 -> no folders), but I'll try and give it a shot. see what happens. Will update this reply.
Update:
After Oneplus flashed Oxygen 4.5.1 on the phone and some other magic I was able to skip wifi step on setup, yet still when I try to activate it it won't budge. the slider won't move and it looks as the page is being refreshed. Also, when I try to get into sim section in settings it would just freeze and alert the program stopped and suggest to close or wait.
Oneplus says it is hardware issue, and the fact it happened when I upgraded to 4.5.5 from settings menus is coincidence. They say I need RMA it.
If anyone knows how to fix it then I'm more than welcome to hear it.
EDIT: it also won't shut off unless I long press the power button.
You device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work property.
I have had my Essential Phone for almost two years now and one day last week when I turned the phone on I saw the following error message.
You device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work property.
Visit this link on another device:
gc.o/ABH
Press Power Key to Continue
There is a red exclamation point at the top that looks like this <!>. I contacted Essential Support and they told me the only way that message gets displayed is when someone has unlocked the bootloader at some point. I have never connected my phone to a USB cable for anything other then charging it with a power outlet and I have certainly never heard of ADB before this error occurred.
I would like to know how this error has happened if all I do is install a few apps from the Play Store and install OS updates when the are officially available OTA. Essential Support has said its my fault and will not help.
I tried to reset the phone back to factory settings several times. I have used the reset from within the Settings, I have used ADB to side-load the latest OTA OS from Essentials website and I have also tried some kind of flashing reset but no matter what I did I could not get this error to go away. These methods are described on the Essential site linked below.
Here is the link to Essentials website that I used. Since this is my first XDA post it will not let me post the whole URL. (essential.com/developer/current-builds)
I eventually ran the following command which did remove the error.
Code:
adb reboot "dm-verity enforcing"
From what I can tell this just prevents the error message from being displayed, correct? If the reason for the error is still there then what are my options? Should I worry about this error? Is it possible for me to reset the phone in someway to get this error message to go away and put the phone back into a secure and safe state? I don't care about any user data on the phone. The whole thing can be erased, which I think I have done sever times already trying to fix this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because beyond trying to fix this error I have no experience with ADB or modifying a phone in anyway.
Thanks,
-eric
You can unlock your bootloader and unlock critical partitions than flash the latest bts (back to stock) from the link below. Make sure to read the directions and use a quality type c USB 3.0 or 3.1. you basically download the zip and unzip it, then run the flash-all-wipe.bat from fastboot mode. This will fix the actual problem. Good luck and make sure to ask in that thread if you get stuck.
Almost forgot, make sure to download the Essential Window's drivers(from thread below as well). You don't need to worry about setting up adb and fastboot because it's Automatic when you run the commands from the zip you download. Also make sure you first uninstall any instance of adb or fastboot that may already be on your computer.
[HELP] Samsung SM-G950F system & Os recovery ?
Hello,
Here is my problem.
2 days ago, I wanted to root my phone to get rid of any Google stuff (at this point I didn't know the existence of ADB commands :crying: ).
I followed a step by step youtube tutorial (youtube.com/watch?v=ZD-5twDm6XI), which works with TWRP, magisk and Odin (factory reset is needed).
Once everything is finished, my phone is finally rooted, and I grant superuser rights to Titanium app to uninstall google, and only SOME apps uninstalled totally (maps, chrome, facebook) BUT google play services won't uninstall. So, I try with System App Removal to uninstall google play stuff, and the same happens.
I reboot my phone, and it seems that everything disappeared... Not so sure... Indeed, the play store reinstall all applications as soon as I connect to the WiFi! and I have a persistent message "google play services stopped" that prevents me from browsing for example.
At this point, I use ADB commands, to remove anything which contains "com.blahblah.google.blahblah" and the play store (com.android.vending) with -k command. And it worked totally fine !!!!! I disconnect my phone, ready to backup my data. Idkw, i wanted to uninstall system app removal. IMPOSSIBLE from the phone, which says : "samsung One UI stopped" (I was in safe boot mode). My phone doesn't answer, so I reboot it.
Once it has booted, the TWRP menu screen appears. Ok, isn't that weird ? I swipe to allow changes, then I go to system to boot "normally" my phone.
A warning says : NO OS INSTALLED !!!! I don't understand, I panic, but finally boots my phone. Black charging screen. Forever.
I started first to flash an "official" Samsung ROM from Sammobile. TWRP indicates it is an invalid .zip, adb too. Odin doesn't manage to boot from the ROM too. I take a deep breathe and cry. Then I download the /e/ ROM which works fine !! but it has become impossible to backup my data from my samsung account....
So, I came to ask you a few things. WHY did it happen ? How can I be sure that there is no trace of TWRP anymore ? However, my phone storage is 64 GB and there is only 53,5 Gb free of internal storage !? Do you think the original firmware could be "hidden" in my files (e ROM is about 800Mos compressed) ?
It is stupid, but after my mistakes, I miss google...
I will do my best to reply asap.
Thank you for your help !
PS: -I'm a newbie in informatic, don't make things too complicated
-sorry for bad English, not my mother language
Google writes and distributes android.
There are many things in android that you cannot remove and still have a viable system.
imho you will have to flash a rom but we need your phones information (found in settings/system/about phone) model, version baseband, etc. etc
Others more knowledgeable can step in and help.
If anyone could check on his device (S8 Exynos with android 9.0 Pie and One UI) if the files' sizes approximately matched, it would be great !
The one I just received is G950FXXS8DTC6 / G950FOXM8DTC1 / G950FXXS8DTC1 (after it took the Apr 1 update) so probably identical - a Yateley GU46 6GG UK phone. I am running it on ATT Prepaid(US) , which gave me the Apr 1 update. I don't know its history but it hasn't been modified - knox=0.
What you would need to do is get that zip and flash it with odin, but having no experience flashing the S8 myself, or any idea where to get that zip, I can be of no help to you. (I just came off a moto x4 which I ruined by flashing a couple custom rom's to try to help others on that forum - the blessings of Pie on that device!)(plus, taking the Apr 1 update on that phone requires a factory reset/wipe.) I needed a dependable phone here and in Europe on vacation.
Keep posting and ask someone to help you re-flash it.
EDIT: I wonder what a settings/general management/factory reset would do. But don't do one until someone here much more experienced with the S8 suggests it.
EDIT: WARNING WARNING WARNING -> Before flashing, ACTIVATE PIN in "Secure startup" (You'll be asked for it AFTER flashing!)
lockscreen and security / secure startup / require pin
I also see a note to delete your google account before doing this. Don't know if necessary.
EDIT: I believe I have found the rom - see pic This is from the SamFirm exe. 0.3.7 I put VOD for the region.
Remember: don't do anything with this until someone experienced in S8 tells you to!
Hi KrisM22,
I've already flashed with Odin, and I have talked about this on different forums, seen tutos on websites,... I hope this time it will work
I have the ROM required, selected activate pin, followed step by step the recommendations, and if I figured it out I will keep you up to date !
I flashed a ROM from https://www.imei.info/download-firmware/samsung/samsung-g950f-galaxy-s8/SM-G950F/ , then I just followed the steps and flashed with Odin. TWRP has disappeared (the classic recovery menu came back). I think I have found my issue with the "no OS installed" bug : it could be because I deleted the essential API com.google.android.packageinstaller, what may have prevented the phone from booting and launching the OS and its apps .
I should have read this excellent post before...
*I ran antivirus analysis with virustotal and Bitdefender, which both declared the extracted files were safe : I didn't notice anything different by my phone compared to the original OS too, so...
