How to install Magisk v23 on GT-i9505? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm on LineageOS 14.1 Optimized by JDCTeam.
However I'm not able to install the latest Magisk.
Is it just not possible anymore because you need fastboot to install a patched boot.img?
I tried flashing through the regular way as a .zip file (just renaming the magisk apk into .zip) in TWRP 3.2.x.x. Also tried flashing the patched boot.img file from the rom through TWRP.
But whenever I flash it and reboot, everything force closes.
Any help on that?

Latest TWRP, latest LineageOS version (18.1), latest Magisk here. I have no issues with flashing Magisk in TWRP. In fact, I have lately had to dirty flash LineageOS then Magisk in TWRP, as a standard update in LineageOS via its updater causes a bootloop.
Fortunately this isn't my main device so....
In your case, I would update to the latest LineageOS as the version you have is really old. Updating may help.

Thanks for the reply, but I want to stay on Android 7 Nougat, so maybe it's in fact not possible anymore. But maybe somebody else has an idea.

Magisk on RR Oreo

Hi guys,
I need a proper guide how to install/flash magisk on RR Oreo.
Try to flash it through TWRP and no go. Seems likely i need to flash stock image or probably stock recovery.
Thanks.
same here
For me it's working on any Oreo, just flash in twrp.
If you don't see magisk app after reboot just do another reboot and it'll be there.

Hi,
i have an general Question in which sequence the root might been installed? On my OP2 should be working Lineage so does the root installed after flashing custom rom und gapps or before? Lineage overwrite an existing root if i didnt flash in a correct sequence.
Or is it possible that Magisk 18.1 are incompatible with Lineage 15.1?
If someone can answer this question it will makes the flashing procedere for my first time safer.
Best regards

flash lineage+gapps, reboot and do the initial setup, reboot in twrp and flash magisk, reboot and install magisk manager manually(lately it's not installed automatically for some reason and root doesn't work without the app).

From OxygenOS 4.5.13 to OxygenOS 5.1/LineageOS 15.1

Hi,
I have Oneplus 5 with TWRP 3.1.1 running 4.5.13. I want update it.
Should I first update TWRP to latest version?
Can I wipe everything and straightly flash to latest OxygenOS and then to LineageOS?
When should I flash/instal Gapps and Magisk? Right after flashing LineageOS or I need to first need to restart it?
Thanks for help.

At first it's necessary to update to 5.1.4 oxygenOS and then 5.1.5. Directly to 5.1.5, isn't working for most people. You can install latest blu spark twrp recovery before or after the os update.
After this you're ready to to install lineageos, gapps, magisk in this order.
It may be useful to format internal storage, since it can be blocking the boot.
Good luck :good:
Thanks very much

Unlocking bootloader on Orea update?

I've read around that unlocking the bootloader on the axon 7 with the orea update (B04 on A2017G) isn't gonna work and that I need to roll back to nougat (7.1) and then unlock the bootloader that way and then install TWRP.
I'm a noob and I need some help. All I want is android pie and lineage os 16 on top. So could you guys link me to some easy to follow guides on how to get pie and LOS16?
But first I need to understand why I can't just use ADB right now on the oreo axon 7 and get an unlocked bootloader. Why do I have to roll back to nougat?

You're correct on that statement.
You can't unlock the bootloader on Oreo because there is no fastboot support with the Oreo updates. ZTE basically broke another thing. You'll need to EDL flash Nougat 7.1 and then use the EDL Tool or the A7 Toolkit to unlock the bootloader. Afterwards, you can follow the instructions in the LineageOS 16 thread, and flash in this order:
• Flash universal bootstack (Los15.1v2Universal)
• Flash the A2017G Modem
• Flash LOS16 zip
• Flash GApps and/or Magisk
• Reboot to system.
If you get an error whilst trying to flash LOS16 zip, just try flashing it again.
All the guides in the Guides section are outdated.

Thanks for replying when nobody else did. Since this post was a bit old I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP with magisk, thinking that I could install Lineage later and first I should obtain root. So I installed magisk through TWRP but now whenever I reboot it just goes straight to TWRP and I don't know how to boot into the phone. Any idea about how I can exit twrp?

Magisk doesn't work at all on stock roms unless you use a work-around. The phone not booting is because of that.
For the work-around, check out this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/kernel-magisk-17-stock-roms-t3856809
BTW, I'm not sure if this works, I've never tried it. The thread is also a bit old.

could it be a possibility that if I reinstall nougat 7.1 on the phone through TWRP, I'd be able to boot? Or does rooting with magisk completely disable us from installing stock roms without some sort of workaround?
My reasoning is that if the rom installs successfully then I would have booted with magisk in magisk manager and root. Maybe my rom got deleted during this process.

Magisk just prevents the phone from booting. It doesn't delete the rom. If you look in topjohnwu's GitHub page for Magisk, you'll find Magisk Uninstaller right next to where you download Magisk from. Download the Magisk Installer zip, move it over to your phone, and then flash it in TWRP. It'll remove Magisk and you'll be able to boot into your rom again.

Ok I've uninstalled magisk with the latest uninstaller. But now when booting up, the phone is stuck on the "please lock bootloader page" and is not proceeding further. Given that I can still use TWRP, should I just follow the LOS 16 pie instructions and install the bootstack, modem, Gapps and the zip file?
I could root the phone by flashing magisk once I'm done flashing these things right?

Yeah, go ahead and flash Los 16.
Flash your bootstack and modem, and reboot to recovery from TWRP. The TWRP version will have changed. You need to flash latest TWRP image again, use Orden 3.2.3-0 TWRP from LOS 15/16 thread. After that, reboot to recovery and continue with the rest of the steps.
You can flash Magisk whenever you'd like, hell you could even flash it 1 year after running Los 16 haha.

You are my saviour. You've helped me so much. But I'm scared of bricking so please don't be annoyed by me when I ask for confirmation.
So basically I installed the vendor partition using party from @Oki like the LOS 16 guide required.
But now as to the things you told me to do.
First I'll install the universal bootstack for LOS and my model specific modem from https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=270519
Once both are flashed my TWRP version will have changed so I will flash the latest version of TWRP again using fastboot
Then I'll go on ahead and install LOS 16 and GApps
THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE.

YAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!
I just installed LOS 16 and everything seems to be working fine.
But the thing is I downloaded and flashed magisk through TWRP, and the installation went fine. When I booted into LOS even the magisk manager was installed.
But when I installed the root verification app from playstore, it said that the device was not rooted. Any advice? Other than that it feels so good to finally be on a custom ROM. Thanks for your help.
I wish you success and happiness from the bottom of my heart.

Nevermind hahahahah. I checked another app. I'm rooted, forgot to grant Superuser permissions the first time.
Again thank you so much and I apologize if I was overbearing or annoying. You really helped me out and made this process much less painful than it could've been.

Magisk and TWRP together in recovery? I am missing some knowledge ...

Yesterday I followed this instruction:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s5e/how-to/galaxy-tab-s5e-sm-t720-root-t3947806
and got my Tablet rooted by Magisk with stock ROM.
Next: I want LinageOs on this device, so I had to install TWRP. For TWRP I followed the links on top of the mentioned XDA-thread:
Go HERE if you are interested in custom recovery (e.g., TWRP).

which got me to this page:
https://twrp.me/samsung/samsunggalaxytabs5ewifi.html
There is this advice:
You are therefore strongly advised to first root your device with Magisk and then pre-root a TWRP image before flashing it to recovery.

I followed the link in this advice an read both 3 times, but I am not sure, what this means.
Next was wiki.lineageos-page for the TAB S5e:
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/gts4lvwifi/install
which I also read, but none the wiser. And for more confusing: in the suitable download-page is besides the linage-file a recovery-image, which is not mentioned anywhere. Or I am blind ...
What I at least did: installed TWRP with the TWRP-app and could boot into this custom recorery and installed LineageOS. The Tab S5 is running fine with LinaegeOS but without root ...
What must be done to root?
Spielmops
I flashed the default TWRP into recovery, installed LineageOS from TWRP, and then followed these instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-7/how-to/install-magisk-android-11-r-100-t4162761
I have working installation of TWRP and Magisk now.
If your device does not have ramdisk in boot images, Magisk has no choice but to be installed in the recovery partition. ... When Magisk is installed in your recovery, you CANNOT use custom recoveries to install/upgrade Magisk! The only way to install/upgrade Magisk is through Magisk Manager. The app will be aware of your device state and install to the correct partition and reboot into the correct mode.

All I can tell you is that I didn't preroot anything. (My device is the LTE variant, but I think it doesn't matter other than needing the correct TWRP and Lineage image).
I started with a stock ROM and locked bootloader.
Unlocked the bootloader and installed the current TWRP image via ODIN (In my case, this one: https://dl.twrp.me/gts4lv/, you will want this: https://dl.twrp.me/gts4lvwifi/).
Installed LineageOS 18.0 and GApps through TWRP sideload.
Booted and set up Lineage.
Downloaded the three files from the thread I linked. Installed them and rebooted in the order given.
Finally, updated Magisk Manager and Magisk to the Beta-Channel (21.1) through Magisk Manager.
Done. I have root.

I installed both Magisk Manager and Magisk from the files in the other thread. That is a custom version, which I updated to Beta after installing.

Right here in the ROMs section.
Obligatory disclaimer: LOS 18 is still a preview and more likely to have bugs than 17.1, but I'm more than happy with it so far.
@topjohnwu
Can you tell anything to this problem? I've read this:
https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#samsung-system-as-root

I've installed Lineage a few times now on this devices, and I always use the developers instructions here. Then I flash Magisk from TWRP. If you are using LOS 17.1, I just flash it in TWRP. Modules and such can NOT be flashed in TWRP your tablet will not BOOT.
The only version of Magisk that I've found that works in LOS 18 / Android 11 is 297. Links in this post.

Is Magisk 23.0 compatible with latest stable oxygen os based on adroid 12...?

hello geniuses..!!
i tried the basic method to root latest oxygen os IN2021_11.C.21 with magisk 23 zip through fastboot. i follow all the steps like extract boot img than patch with magisk 23 loader and after that patched boot image flashing with fastboot. but it doesn't work. is there compatibility issue with magisk 23..?? please solve this. and also is there any way to install twrp..?
Pretty sure those old Magisk versions don't support OOS12, I know they don't support A12 either - just use the latest one, 25.1.
Ok brother. I understand. And is custom recovery available for Android 12 oos12..?
