i have an s8 which works fine but i want to connect the s9 to pc via dex over usb or wireless. the s8 cannot do this but the s9 can. i have to get a whole new phone for this one thing. before i get it i want to check if i can somehow use s8 to connect dex to pc. iv tried the other options like sidesync and flow but its better off to be dex. any info ? phone is rooted with android 9.

There are tutorials on YouTube about using Samsung DeX without the dock on Galaxy S8, even here on XDA there are some.

Even Galaxy S7 had it's shot on DeX on FloyedQ One UI 2.x ROM, provided by @ananjaser1211

I dont think you understand with what I meant.
I'm asking about Dex on PC (for Windows 7 & 10) or Mac.
So there is an app in Windows/Mac called Dex on PC that allowed us to project the Dex environment on our PC/Mac.
I'm not asking about Dex that project to monitor (either through HDMI or Wireless).

I believe he means the DeX feature mentioned here, but he wants it without the "Expensive DeX Dock" that is required for S8/S8+/N8 Series.
DeX itself was originally meant to use phone on bigger, desktop-like screens, then it extended to Windows and Mac, of which requires a Samsung DeX Software to be installed, and when you connect your phone with PC, a pop-up will show on the phone regards DeX.

DexOnPC is only available on Android 10 , i dont remember any pie phone with it
the S8 on stock only runs HDMI dex. if your phone is exynos, you can flash our rom which will give you Dex on pc and wireless dex https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-10-hadesrom-q-v1-0-for-exynos-s8-s8-note8-26-12-2020.4208409/
tho do be noted, it is a V1, it has bunch of bugs, it might be better to wait for V2.0 to drop sometime soon i hope.
also do know that DoP is quite bad, it runs at 20 frames most of the time, rarely hits 30, and thats the case on the S8, S9 (i own the S9) and the S10. i dont even think they made it 60 FPS on the S20 and up models
DeX on HDMI is the way to go if you want a smooth experience
edit: i replied to the wrong guy

Samsung Link

Does anyone know how I can put Samsung Link on my Galaxy S5? All Galaxy models have had it (it was once called Allshare), but this app is one of the main reasons why I've stuck with Samsung products. Not only for the auto backup to my desktop PC whenever I snap a picture or record a video (I can still set that up through just about any cloud service, but it still requires the extra step of downloading it onto my PC), but I use it extensively when I'm traveling. If I need a file or document, porn, etc from one of my PCs at home, Samsung Link allows me to access all of my registered devices remotely and download the file no matter where I am. It also allows me to stream video to any of my Samsung TVs in the house. I know I can do this through other apps, but Samsung Link allowed me to do all of these. This is probably the only app from Samsung that I've used on a daily basis since owning my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. AT&T is my service provider, and I bet they took this app off their phones before loading it up with their stuff.

On my T-Mo version Samsung Link Platform, the prerequisite to run Link, has been pre-installed, I doubt ATT would mess with Samsung's core apps.
See if this works for you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sec.pcw
I get not compatible on this device. . I also tried installing the apk from some random site, and I keep getting link fcs
Anyone help with this?
Am not seeing this too. Why?
Just an FYI, I installed the omega rom and seems they have the framework already, and link works fine now

Desktop mode

Hi all so what I'm hoping is for something like Dex or EMUI 8 so you can plug in your EP1 and acts like a PC now I know it's not possible as a simple APK file however my question is do you think Google will add something down the line? Or even Essential themselves had an S8 for a while and loved the Dex mode however love the EP1 much more as a phone just missing the cherry on top which that would be for me. Thanks All.

Linux On Dex - First Impressions

So, I am at work and I showed off Linux on Dex to some other Developers and Engineers here.
Impressed they were, but it's time to really dig in.
Here is what I love about it on first look:
Great to have a fleshed Linux experience on my phone
Great dev tools come with the image (IntelliJ and also Visual Studio Code and more)
Has plenty of apps to get you started and it's pretty thoughtful
Looks great at 1920x1080 as well as 2560x1440 resolutions on a monitor
Switching between Dex and Ubuntu is pretty snappy
Things I didn't like:
Just a LITTLE bit laggy sometimes
Need to either use ARM compiled apps or compile them yourself
The Default 10GB partition size was too small, so I would suggest using 15GB at least, after updates/upgrades (Ubuntu OS updates that is), you'll still have about 35% free space with 15GB disk
You cannot "install" this on the SDCard, only internal memory, so keep that in mind if you have the 128GB model and tons of apps
Once installed, you cannot delete the 3GB+ zip file you downloaded, so there is that wasted space as well (ok, I have not tried REALLY hard to delete it yet, but Google Files won't delete it, nor do I know the repercussions of deleting this file too)
I'm still trying to work out how to access the files on the device (outside the Linux container), not sure if it is possible, but I have not had a lot of time with it as of now
BONUS!!
When you are not in Dex mode (normal handset mode), you can still launch Linux on Dex, but you cannot get the full desktop experience.
Click on the Terminal icon under the RUN button and you can drop into the Ubuntu Shell and still use commands (like SSH-ing to servers using your certs and stuff).
Of course, the down side, small screen. Hey, in a pinch, when I am on the road and needs to SSH into an AWS instance and run a couple commands, I won't complain!!
All in all, I think this will be great for Dev's to play with, not sure how useful it REALLY will be, but I know from a DevOps/Architect/Engineer, it's nice to have as a backup to be able to actually take care of things without having to drag out the whole laptop.
All this, with a $20 adapter.
Any other thoughts for those that have used it?
Hello friend, I have mine installed on my 128gb Sdcard.
How did you get it on your SD Card?
Thanks!

Move the file from LoD folder to the SD card and reassign the file location in the Linux on Dex app, it worked for me but moved it back to internal storage to ensure best performance .
My impression? They will poorly maintain it and I suspect it will be discontinued without any real notice. Registration was broken for well over a week before signups ended. You cannot get in contact with anyone from the team. Care doesn't even know it exists.
I am yet to find a use case that improves upon remote access to an Ubuntu 18.04 VM running on a cloud or at home, but I'm not a developer.
Perhaps if you are stuck somewhere without an Internet connection and feel like coding somewhere in the mountains or in the jungle.. But then you would need a handy monitor, keyboard, mouse and a power source..?
I think I can sum this up in one simple sentence - "Because I can..."
It's like having linux on a PS3, because it could.
Haven't had a chance to use it yet but looks promising. That doesn't mean it will be supported very well, time will tell.
Hardware wise it should work very well, and there is ALWAYS a good reason to have a handy (mostly) self-contained PC with you in case you CAN'T access the net...
Would be great to get an idea of some real life use cases..
Would be very happy to see this project pick up some community developer attention, the platform is only as good as the tools developed for it.
In the absence of an official LoD forum for developers perhaps that community should be developed here.

I got this installed on my 8GB Note 9 today. I didn't get registered for the beta, but download the app and the Ubuntu image and got it all up and running today. My only complaint so far is it won't run full screen on Dex. That may be because I'm running the Pie Beta. Not sure how it operates on Oreo Dex.
I'll play around with it more later. I basically just plugged into my monitor and opened it up today.
Well, here is a real-life use case that saved me a TON of time and effort.
I set up the Linux on Dex with many tools and configs I need to be able to do my work (Sr. DevOps Architect/Engineer) on my AWS servers. I had an instance that was having some issues and was notified via the monitoring platform and was able to get my phone out, run the Ubuntu Shell and SSH/Fix the issue without ever having to pull out the laptop and tether it while on the train headed home.
There ARE some use cases where this will come in handy, but I do agree that these are real "edge" cases too. No "normal" user will ever really find this helpful.

Full screen on oreo.. Have you tried Dex max app?
planning to install LoD and curious if it can actually decompile and recompile apk's as a laptop would..?! mostly I'm interested in Themes for Samsung.. using few apk as templates to swap files, images and recompiling the apk, will it be able and will it properly sign it ?! and if so which way should I go?! do I need to install java, SDK, plugin I saw there ?!
any advice would be great.. thanx..

I think you need powersupply as well in the adapter for it to work.

DeX on device?

I'm wondering if anyone knows or has explored whether it's possible to get on-device DeX a la Tab S4 and S5e on the S10.
I thought I may be able to trigger it by adding the DeX QS toggle. I successfully added the toggle, but it didn't do anything when pressed or held, so clearly there's more to getting it to work.
See here for my efforts: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyTab/comments/c4tbxn/tab_s4_s5e_dex_quick_setting_tile_name_via_adb/
Any thoughts?

Yes, that's the default operation for DeX-compatible phones; however, the Galaxy Tab S4 and S5e can use DeX natively without an external display (i.e. "on device").
I'm trying to see whether it's possible to get the S10 working the same way so that the DeX interface can be used on the device display rather than requiring an external display connection.
The S10+ and 5G, in particular, have relatively large displays already so there's no reason in my mind that they shouldn't be able to function as such.

I'd hardly consider the screens of the Plus (6.3") and 5G (6.7") to be "small." Remember when tablets were 7"? Have you seen the GPD Pocket with its 7" screen?
Would it be good as a sole device? Probably not, but it'd make do in a pinch

Ah, yea, I tried the VNC method. It's super janky and is not a particularly good experience. I'm looking for a native solution in the way the Tabs can do it.
Edit: wait, that was Linux on DeX, not standard DeX. My bad.

NEED HELP WITH Dex for PC

I have Galaxy S8 SM-G950FD, One UI 1.0 Android 9 built number GF950FXXSBDUA3.
That's is the latest built from OTA.
I want to use Dex on PC, already install the software with latest version.
But when I plug-in the phone to notebook, the Dex notification wont show up on the phone notification.
Search Dex on my setting but no such apps on the list.
Does anyone know what's do I need to do to be able to use Dex on PC?
Does One UI on S8 only stuck at version 1.0?
DeX on Galaxy S8's generation requires DeX dock, a dock that has a USB-C which is responsible for triggering DeX mode.
Another guy posted a similar question, he wanted to use DeX with USB-C or Wi-Fi only, just as Galaxy S9 and above, find his post, I replied to him.
Sadly, Galaxy S8 does not support (officially) any software higher than One UI 1.0, not even 1.1, however, there's One UI 2.5, unofficially, and may there be a One UI 3.x too, it is a fantastic device to be wasted.
