OnePlus 8 5G (T-mobile) [IN17] OTA and Boot.img for rooting - OnePlus 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I was attempting to root my OnePlus 8 5G and it was a pain looking for the boot.img. Thankfully my friend squabbi from MaowDroid, found a OTA in a telegram channel (https://t.me/s/OPUpdatesTracker?q=11.0.1.1.IN55CB) and was able to extract the boot.img. From there the processes was the same as with any other phone with Magisk. I hope this helps out some people and prevents multiple headaches.

Are you able to receive texts? Also do u have the .img file link for 11.0.1.2.IN55CB. Only the zip file in the telegram group...

Texts work. What img do you need in particular? The boot image is attached and you can download via Media Fire. If you need other imgs you can extract them with the tool provided. (https://github.com/cyxx/extract_android_ota_payload)

If you can't find the boot.img for a specific version, root using THIS method. No pathching boot.img required nice and simple.

Yes, but not using the guide on XDA. Not sure if that guy had an actual TMO device at all or if his method is just broken but of all the TMO users I've talked to including myself thats not how you succesfully end up on global.
The only way I've ever succesfully ended up on Global OOS11 is as follows.
1.) MSM back to TMO v10.7. No ther MSM version will work as thats the lowest TMO firmware that has a sequential update on global that we have fastboot files for.
2.) After flashing to TMO 10.7 don't take any OTA's. Go right into settings and enable OEM unlocking. Immedietly unlock your bootloader and flash the Global 10.9 ROM through fastboot.
3.) Once booted into the global ROM, take all OTA's (there will be more than one to take so double check)
After that your golden, and you can relock your bootloader if you don't plan on rooting.
Me and another TMO user went through a lot of these MSM flashes and fastboot updates. These are the only versions we could get working that didn't send us into crash dump mode. Feel free to do your own expirimenting.

thanks for the detialed guide bro.. ill stay in touch ..i may need further guidance.once i get my unlock token and unlock my bootloader ...another question ...do you recommend backing up persist or modem? did you face any fingerprint or connectivity issues? ive heard the eu rom supports dual sim and less conmection issues ..

This worked great for me. Last step is downloading full 11.0.2.2.IN21AA OTA and extracting the boot.img so I can easily root it. From there, this is a great path and guide. Sorta a long process, but it's nice to have the phone clean without TMO bloat.

Way to unlock bootloader on B27? (A2017U)

Any way to unlock bootloader on B27, or go back to B20 from B27? I've scoured the forums and Google and can't find any info. Thanks.
Use tenfar's tool to reboot into edl mode (the instructions are in the thread) and then flash twrp. Then download DrakenFX's BootloaderUnlock.zip and flash in TWRP. You should then be able unlock with 'fastboot OEM unlock'
Bootloader Unlock zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165/page17
But it says in all caps on the first page of the linked thread that this method is not recommended for B27.

I did it on rooted B27. Before I flashed the bootloader unlock file I used TWRP to make a system image backup. Then I flashed his file, went to bootloader, unlocked, went back to TWRP and restored the system image I made. My bootloader screen shows it is unlocked and my B27 works perfectly. I could be the lone person who made it work but it did work for me.
Seems as though DrakenFX took his file down for the bootloader unlock - gotta wait this one out

SM-N986U/U1 Oneui3.0 Beta full tar firmware

For sm-n986u/u1 only!
Unlocked bootloader is neccessary at this time as the TAR's do not contain signed imgs
This is just a place I'm going to drop my Odin tars that I have made from oneui 3.0 beta firmware.
Simply flash the tar like you normally would using odin. Boot up, test it out. AP in AP slot, etc etc.
To root, you must be bootloader unlocked, flash the supplied twrp and flash magisk. (instructions in txt file in the downloaded archive).Though to boot into the oneui3.0 system, you do need to revert back to stock oneui3.0 recovery. A full wipe, factory reset or formatting of data may be needed.
Flashing encryption disabler works, and sdcard can be read in twrp after formatting data.
Samsung wearables need a patched bluetooth file to pair. I have this. If I forget to upload, remind me.
There's no point linking to beta 1 or beta 2, so I'll just start here with Beta 3.
** I have not tested this on a locked bootloader device. If you try it, please report back if it flashes fully.

Are we able to flash this as long as we are on U1 fw? In other words, if we are on ATJ5 U1 Firmware, are we able to flash this tar file and be on beta 3?
2 questions
1) If we're on ATJ5 can we still flash this?
2) By flashing the other provided files we will be on a rooted Beta 3 on a N986U1, as in the North American Snapdragon version? Because I thought the only way to root was via the remote unlock service?

As always, you need an unlocked bootloader to flash twrp. However you achieve unlock is up to you. But thanks for reminding me to add that comment to the op.

Odin verifies carrier.bin then dqmdbg.bin during flashing, and the mismatch occurs at that moment, but on device it says Secure Check Fail: Carrier. I assume that's where the checksum differs. Just a hunch though. Waiting for the locked bootloader version for upload and will try that one.
Hi, guys! Has someone beta one ui 3.0 for N9860 CHC? Thanks!

You can try something, open the appropriate tar with 7zip or whatever and delete those two files. See if the flash goes through them. Technically those two partitions won't matter with the whole process.
The most important partitions in AP are
Boot
Dtbo
Super
Recovery
If you strip the AP tar back to that, and flash it alongside the BL, and CP it should get you to one ui 3.0.

I came here and saw the first page and wanted to tell you to not respond to denson. LOL .. he doesnt know what he is talking about and he does not want to read.
The moment he asked the question i knew he didnt read about unlocked bootloader.
To Mentalmuso - the only reason i dont want to respond to the ones unwilling to read is they will brick their phones on what you tell and what they understand and then guilt trip you as if you are responsible so help them fix. He asked a question in another thread about flashing ATID from ATJ5 without reading. Good that he didnt brick his phone.
To Denson - Really humble request please read. But its a free world one is free to do as they please.

Very polite respond, but a tad bit premature in its nature. At the time of my question, the addition of unlocked bootloader and locked bootloader was not added, prompting the question. Thanks for the feedback, nevertheless. I've been here for awhile, so I'm pretty familiar with thread etiquette, but I appreciate the reminder.

If you have been here for a while then you must know the following..
1. Popular Ways to flash a locked BL Samsung device - Odin, Heimdall, Recovery
2. How to flash different firmwares using Odin and how to download firmwares using tools like Frija, SamFw and websites etc?
If you didn't know the second point I have whole thread about that for people looking to get to Beta, and that thread has links to thread about posting different firmwares. That should have told you its possible to go from ATJ5 to ATID (If you read it) and would have answered your own question that you asked in another thread. Hence the reminder nothing personal. Which encryption disabler do we use, is it the one in the twrp thread for android 10 OneUI 2.5 ?.
In the text file included in your TWRP download there's instructions to flash twrp.img in the official twrp app.
1. I've tried the official twrp app on my device: "US N986U1" on android 10 and the twrp app doesn't recognize my device, i.e my device doesn't show up in the device list.
Twrp app allowed me to flash files but it always fails on android 10 for my device. So I'm not sure it's gonna work OneUI 3.0 .
2. Which twrp.img should be flashed in the official twrp app if it does work ?, there no twrp.imp included in files only TWRP.tar. I extracted the TWRP.tar and there's a "recovery" file in it , it that the file to be flashed in the official twrp app ?

TMO 8T with Global Rom

Now that the global Rom is available as a download, has any one flashed it using crazn's instructions for the eu rom? Any feed back or issues? How are the data speeds? Are you flashing the TMO modem? If so, is the fingerprint still working after that? Please discuss.

I am currently on global. Flashed it after being on TMO Stock Rom that was rooted. I followed Crazn's method from this thread, [GUIDE] Convert TMO to Global, EU, or other variant | XDA Developers Forums (xda-developers.com) but extracted my own from the playload bin file. So far no issues at all. I patched the boot.img file using magisk. But remember to flash the non-rooted stock boot.img for the global rom first.. boot it up and then flash the magisk patched boot.img. I tried directly flashing a patched boot.img and it wouldn't boot up all the way.

I'm planning on converting over to the Global Rom today. Couple questions.... I'm not rooting or anything. So I run the flash all.bat from the fastbootd screen pictured in the OP from that thread, or do I select English and let it boot to fastboot? Then I unzip the file in the Fastboot adb tool folder and then enter flashall.bat in the cmnd prompt right? Once it's done flashing can't I just boot into the OS or do I need to reboot and wipe everything?

You don't need to select English.. As long as it says "fastbootd" on the top, you are good to go.
Yes, you can simply run flash_all.bat. Make sure though that you have the latest fastboot.exe (not the one in crazn's upload) in the folder where flash_all.bat and other images are. If not, it'll fail. I believe if you download the conversion folder directly from crazn's upload, he has a version of fastboot there that doesn't work. So make sure you replace it with the latest from google platform tools. Remember to wipe everything by using the recovery menu before booting your phone for the first time after flashing.

Made this little project using the script from @mauronofrio FASTBOOT ROMs to return OP8 to latest OOS, since I was always having issues doing so, and always ended up using the unbrick tool for OP8.
Enjoy! If you have any issues, just let me know using a post.
Regards.

I have a T-Mobile device, which I converted to Global and finally installed a custom ROM. For any updates, I have to follow the same route - go back to T-Mobile, then global and then any other ROM. Can I use this utility to go back directly to Global from custom or would I still need to first flash T-Mobile ROM?

Technically, this process would be the same as a conversion. Just see if you need to backup any other extra partition, like persist.img or other.
Regards.
thank you so much for this, ive been stuck or soft bricked for the last 4 days and this might just be my out.
Hi, thanks for this! Now I have a question, I have latest OOS with Magisk, but since upgrade to 11 i have System UI crashes and serious lags and freeze, I did 4 factory resets and its still there, I want to reflash all from 0, can I use this?
Thank you very much for the contribution

There's a self extracting file (*.exe) inside the zip file. Have you run it, and checked the extracted files?

Thanks -- I didn't notice it was an executable. I think I'm ready to go, but just checking. Here's what I've done so far with my T-Mobile version OnePlus 8:
1. completed process to unlock the bootloader (unlocked phone, got token, applied token)
2. set up fastboot in a directory on my Windows PC
3. ran the self-extraction on OnePlus8Oxygen_15.E.35_OTA_0350_all_2103221815-FASTBOOT
Now I'm going to run flash-all.bat. Before I do that, do I need to back up any files, e.g. modem files? Thanks!

backup persist.img and modem.img just in case, and you should be ok to go.
PS: i'm going to upload the fastboot rom without the self extracting method to be easier for users.

@infected_ Considering that I am coming from an unlocked bootloader, will this method re-lock the bootloader and is this carrier-branded compatible?

Safe to use for Verizon OP8 5G UW or is this a method to go Global from a carrier-branded version?

sorry for another simple question; I haven't done system level things with Android in a long time. Where are instructions on how to backup those files? I did a little searching, but haven't found anything that works yet.

Thanks! Now I realize that even though I have an unlocked bootloader, I don't have root access. Now I have to figure out how to get that. Sigh.
And...I see much conflicting information on how to root my bootloader unlocked T-Mobile version OnePlus 8. Any advice/pointers to info on the best/easiest way to root it?

[Guide] ROOT OP8T OOS (A13)

Here's the patched boot.img for OnePlus 8T Android 13 KB2005_11_F.13 and F.15
Bootloader must be unlocked
(Have the img on your PC)
Instructions:
1: Reboot to bootloader "adb reboot bootloader"
2: Run CMD "fastboot flash boot" ~name of img~
Profit!
You're now rooted.
I've also attached the stock boot.img just in case anyone wants it.
Boot - Google Drive

Thank's

I highly doubt there'll be another OTA until next month. Check with the developer of the unofficial orange fox recovery, he'll most likely release a new version for A13. If not, I'll pull the boot.img and patch it again and post it here.

Nevermind he's already released a version for A13. Here it is

Lol don't tell me you've bricked it!!! You can probably flash the stock boot.img and that might fix it. Otherwise you'll have to use the msm tool to reflash the firmware.

Well if you're worried about bricking it then before you start making modifications, be sure to have the latest msm for it on your PC, and also take a full backup using Orange Fox recovery, and also have the stock boot.img on your PC. And if anything goes wrong just flash the stock boot.img. And if that doesn't fix it then restore the backup, and if that still doesn't work then you'll have to do a complete restore using a msm tool

If it's Android 13 11_F.13 then yes. But Orange Fox has a working recovery for A13 on our phone. So you can always flash Magisk that way if you want

You did flash unmodified boot.img before trying to update? Well, honestly idk why it won't install. Maybe you should try a different method of installing the update, like manually installing it
