As always if you have to ask then the answer is no .
You root when apps or mods require root only .

If you are happy with your Note, than it's not necessary.
I rooted mine, because it was still on 4.0.3, and that is the reason for the many bad reviews on the internet.
After upgrading to 4.1.2, it was like a whole new tablet.

Btw you're in correct forum.When you wrote tab people will confuse it with galaxy tab and root will not slowing down your note.

I actually liked my Note even at 4.0.3.. but I rooted so I could use the Multiwindow manager for multiwindow.. EVERYWHERE!

So that I will try and root but BTW just asking is HighXXXXXXXX CMW Recovery good or Darkman Recovery Good ?
TWRP is only for stock rom right ?

There are many benefits to root. All the flashable files here require it.
But technically you will void your warranty.
However there are ways to get back to stock and "unroot" so mostly no one will know the difference if you have to return it.
Both recoveries are good, but HighOnAndroid supported a couple ROMs that Darkman didn't, though I'm not sure this is still the case

How about TWRP Recovery ? TWRP Recovery only work in stoock rom ?

You will need to flash the HighXXXXXXXX CMW in ODIN to get root and cwm. You can then flash either darkman recovery with CWM, TWRP recovery or stay as is..
TWRP recovery isa modified recovery like the other 2 and requires root to use. If you look around you'll find the stock recovery too.

I root my tab with Darkman Recorvey is easy then I tot . Thx you guys .

Yes! Rooting is the way to go. There are ways around the warranty issues.
My main reason for rooting is for these essential apps:
Titanium Backup
Ad Blocker
Mobile ODIN
Triangle Away
ROM Toolbox Pro
and many more apps that have useful extended capabilities once rooted.

Some Con's of rooting
1) good mobile app no longer works after rooting.
So if u use good mobile for checking corporate emails, rooting device will break this.
2) there will be some overhead for you to upgrade device when any new firmwares are released. If u are a very busy professional, then this is an overhead you can live without.
3) there are and there always will be chances that you may brick your device.
4) I think u legaly void warranty on device by unlocking it. (I am assuming u want to root to load different firmware)
I am not discouraging.. just givin you other side of the coin.

Sorry to bump a three month old thread, but would anyone know whether the Lotus Traveler app used for syncing corporate email and calendar works after rooting? Good is trash, so I'm not surprised it wouldn't work. There's not much of a downside finding out for myself by rooting my Note 10.1 because I intend to keep flying stock on my Note 2; but I thought someone might save me the time and trouble.

For Lotus Traveler - I have no idea. I am unlucky enough to have Lotus Domino for our corporate e-mail and I hate it with a passion.
I have installed and configured Aqua Mail to connect to our Domino server (IMAP) and I can confirm that it works perfectly after rooting. You just need your IT guys to ensure that you have web access enabled. I set mine to check for mail every 15 minutes, if it's more urgent than that then why is it an email anyway.

- rooting under normal circumstances shouldnt slow your system, in fact most devs i believe will attempt to make their roms bring out the best performance from that particular tab/phone you may own, throught software optimizations, in cojunction with working as best as it can with your specific hardware, although, sometimes you may have a N8013(american wifi version), the dev may have the n8000(3g version).......n810 is the european wifi version...................weve been mixing and matching rom versions here, i.e. using a n8000 rom on a n8010 hardware, ive done it, as far as i know, no adverse effects, well at least no obvious signs of em
- Usually, the process of flashing a rom will first involve rooting your tablet, and then flashing a recovery, which replaces the official one that may already be on your tab, the official one is usually pretty limited in what you can do, the custom RECOVERY is flashed because it gives you these options, but not limited
-factory reset
used when, flashing new rom, best to use the recovery when ever you wanna factory reset, i dont know if this was a oje of, or just specific to my situation, but ive used the android factory reset on my tf201 asus prime, after having rooted, custom recovery and been running a custom rom for some time, and it soft brick, since thats happenened ive been shy to do it on any android device, which is cool, as the custom recovery is a beatiful thing.......maybe someone can expand on or correct that suspicion

factory/data reset- brings back your android back to its original state, wipes your data, that means, all apps installed, all settings changed
format - allows you to format the different seperate sections of your android rom, example of the different sections would be......kernel, os, sd hardrive ........
nandroid - the best part of a custom recovery in my opinion, the ability to completely back up your rom, settings, apps, homescreens, widgets......essentially, restoring your android EXACTLY where you left off, the few seconds before, it takes to boot into recovery and start the backup procedure..........you can also backup and restore only certain sections of your rom, so you may decide to back up just the kernel, or you may decide to restore, JUST the kernel from a FULL previous backup (that is, all sections backed up, minus, the sd hardrive,
Unless you specifically FORMAT the sd card, it usually wont be touched......id advice caution and reading up, before making a decision to format sd harddrive, with a custom RECOVERY, that may not know the requirements to your android device, i.e. a custom kernel ported from another android device from another company....plus, formatting sd harddrive is not really a thing done all the time, not unless you are thinking about starting from scratch, i mean, REALLY fresh, disclaimer:this would wipe any files you have stored on your android devices, specifically, documents, pics, vids so on so forth

third party rom, built from the ground up, kinda....there are other different flavors of third party roms, CM is one of them
-when flashing a new rom, it is strongly advised by most devs to wipe cache/davlick and factory reset....before flashing, this helps avoid any conflicts with the previous rom and the new rom......at this point, if you were to reboot, rather then flash the rom, you would have essentially reset the rom to its original state, that means re-entering your wifi, changing settings, installing apps, generally a pain in the ass, if you find your self having to do it to many times in a short period.....titanium backup(root) is your friend, does a good job at backing up your apps and wifi.....havent figured out how to backup the settings i change in the android setting

This free app, is a life saver when your new rom doesnt give you the option to reboot into your recovery, sometime found in hold power button/restart/recovery.......just more quicker then the manual way......especially when your having to google up the hardware method because you've not done it in a while and forgotten......which i believe is power off/hold volume down key/then press hold power button/wait for samsung logo/then let go of all buttons and reapettedly press volume up key untill the recovery shows up.......if you end up in DOWNLOAD mode, hold power to switch off, and repeat the process, changing the volume key, its one or the other, one takes you to the recovery, the other to download mode......so just reverse the volume keys, same method, just up instead of down

installable app, that hands out root permission to apps that ask for root, if you dont expresly give persmision, using a supersu app, the app asking for root permission most likely will not work.... .....this app is installed as part of the rooting process

third party wifi/3g firewall, requires root........allows you to control what apps are able to use your wif/3g......i think its a passive firwall, as in, it uses very little of your resources, in the way it operates

sometimes, if you have already flashed a custom rom, and the dev has released the next version of his custom rom, as long as no drastic changes have been made between the two versions, you are able to flash the new version over the old version, keeping all your settings/apps/homescreen/widgets.......although a cache and davlik wipe is usually suggested if doing so

yea i would do it. it brings life to an old tablet. the 80XX tablets were abandoned by samsung. there are custom roms for Oreo the latest Android OS for N8000. i have a 8020 but no custom roms at the moment.

Would someone mind looking over my plan to root my Note 4? I just want to be sure

I have experience rooting a Xoom, an Atrix, and an S3, but at the same time I usually just follow instructions to the bullet point while only vaguely understanding what I'm doing.
I got my cracked screen replaced at a non-samsung outlet yesterday which I'm pretty sure voids my warranty, and if so, I want to take advantage of that by rooting. But a lot has changed since the last time I rooted a phone - they're talking about "systemless root" and flashing an SELinux Permissive Kernel and then "Oh no wait you don't have to flash such a kernel in this new version" and I have no idea what any of that is referring to, all that stuff is new to me.
I have a Canadian Note 4 SM-N910W8 running the latest COK3 OTA update on 5.1.1. I found this rooted ROM which I'm pretty sure is the one I want, but then, it's the only one I found, if there are more or better rooted ROMs please let me know:

The instructions for how to install it keep changing for every version though. It also says I need to start by flashing TWRP via ODIN - Okay, I've done that before, but I want to make sure I get the right one. I found a couple of sources:

Not sure which one I should use.
All I want is to be able to edit the keyconfig files to get my USB controller working, to be able to edit system files to change the Touchwiz aggressive background app closing and allow apps to remain in memory for much longer to make it more like Windows memory management, and to be able to install Xposed modules like statusbar volume.
But I want to make sure that I'm doing everything *exactly* right, and that's why I like to ask real human beings to confirm my plan before starting. So I download one of those TWRP files, download ODIN, plug my phone into my PC, use ODIN to flash TWRP, boot into TWRP, use TWRP to wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system, and then install the rooted ROM I linked above. Have I got all that right? What's all this SELinux and systemless root stuff I keep hearing about, and why don't I need to do that anymore with the latest version of this rooted rom? Will this break any key features on my Note 4 like my spen or my external USB or my blood oxygen meter or all the cool novelty **** that Samsung Note 4 comes with?

Right here goes the rom u have is the right one for ur phone. There will be others around byt u can try that ome to start with. The twrp recovery u need is the 6th one on the list down the model numner is at the end of the file name, its the .tar file u want zip can be used also but thats using recovery to flash the rom. Using odin 3.09 latest one i think. U need to hold down volume down, home and the power to boot into download mode open idon with kies closed and end task with task manager in window.
Now whem oden starts u need to select the phone tab and choose the twrp recovery and flash that leaving everything unchecked apart from restart and reset time all others should be blank, i flashed with erase nand and nearly bricked my phone, thats one to leave for the experts lol.
Once u flashed recovery i think u need to root even though the rom is rooted rom i think it needs to be rooted before u flash the rom, not sure but its what was on the instructions i followed. If u try find a root file off here for ur phone u do same as u did flashing the recovery file and tjats it wait for phone to restart and reboot fully after flashing each recovery and root, i always do from knowimg its best ti imstall wimdows apps ome at a ti, e and reboot between the installs as less syste, errors can happen that way , well not system errors but linked dll files not been copied right and the like.

U also, well i did for my 910f need to use a specific twrp or at least the latest release.
The walk throughs on most sites are all the right way to do it, just others are explained better than others and imclude other stuff if it goes wrong which believe me it can go wrong, easy as not seeimg a check box tocked or not ticked and boom paper weight lol

Okay but what about the other site I found, the XDA forum with TWRP recovery files? They seem like newer versions, but then that left me wondering if the reason the other site has older versions is because it's just outdated, or because only the older versions will work.

Your welcom, the rom you want is fine, u want to go for either of the roms version 3.21 de bloated or regula,, de bloated is where they take slot of apps by google and also carrier apps that sometimes come installed.

J500FN rapidly running out of space

As a bog standard user I naively assumed that I could put apps on my SD card as and when I wanted. Instead the majority refuse to be put there or cause problems.
If I root my Samsung J500fn (Marshmallow) will I be able to chose the location for putting apps? Can I get rid totally of the stuff Google/Samsung think I need but I never use? Can I make better use of my SD card that is practically empty? Are there any drawbacks to keeping Marshmallow as installed or would rooting overwrite it? Is there a better way than to root? Is "One Click root" safe to use? Am I better of using various programs like Odin, TWRP etc. mentioned in various threads here?

Hi Anne,
We all have the same trouble with storage on our J5.
If you chose to root your phone then yes you will be able to uninstall alot of the bloat ware that is on your phone.
You will also have the option of using adaptable storage.
There are lots of threads on here that will guide you through the process. Just make sure that you read the guides properly and download and install the CORRECT zips.
I don't know if the one click root is safe to use.
I would advice installing TWRP and then flashing super su. Again all of the guides are on here.
If you do install TWRP via Odin then you will have the option of flashing custom ROMs..
Have a good look at the guides. Ask all the questions that you need to. People in here will be happy to help.

I downloaded TWRP from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=55922, version for SM-J500FN dated May 6, 2016. Also ODIN-v3.10.7 and SU SR4-SuperSU-v2.78-SR4-20161115184928 as well as the Samsung USB drivers. All check sums were fine. Odin 3 installed fine on my PC. I used Odin 3 to install the TWRP on my phone. However, when I try to go into Volume up - home - power on - I get a screen that does not resemble at all what I thought TWRP should look like.
I get the yellow/green Android thingy which says "installing system update" follows by "no command" followed by a screen which says:
Android Recovery
MMB29M.J500FNXXU1BPH1
samsung/j5nltexx/j5nlte
6.0.1/MMB29M/J500FNXXU1BPH1
user/release-keys
Use volume up/down and power. (all in yellow)
Followed by a menu which includes "apply update from SD card" but which doesn't install the SU zip file that I put in the download section of the SD card.

If your phone is looking like that then you have the wrong version of TWRP for the version of android that your using.
I did the same thing.
I hadn't got the time at the mo to find you the correct version but that is the problem for sure.
You want the one by Garnesh Varma which if on the Roms & kernels thread

Following your suggestion I downloaded the TWRP version http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j5/development/recovery-samsung-galaxy-j500f-t3416960 by searching for Garnesh Varma. It successfully installed, but the problem remains the same. I do not get the TWRP recovery page just the same as before.
I shall continue to look to see if I can find another version from Garnesh, although it seemed correct ie SM-J500FN Android version 6.0.1 Build number MMB29M.J500FNXXU1BPH1, security patch level 1 August 2016.
Will let you know how I get on.

Ahah! The trick was to turn off the phone and not to permit ODIN to do a reboot. I didn't know how to turn off so I pulled the battery. Then went into volume up - home - power on and got the correct menu. Whew. Rooted now according to root checker. Now to get some of the stuff off the phone and make some space.#

Hello Anne!
Once you are rooted you can remove any Google/Samsung app. But removing some system apps can lead to bootloop. You can recover from bootloop by re-flashing stock rom.
I can make a flashable zip which removes unnecessary system apps, including the Google/Samsung apps which you want (you flash the zip in recovery and you're done). So let me know which Google/Samsung apps you wanna remove.

I recommend you to try cm 12.1 (5.1.1 lollipop) by Nick Verse if you don't care about Samsung Camera, Memo and Browser. I use Open Camera, Color Note and Dolphin Browser (has sound/brightness sliders in videos) as alternatives. Unlike Touchwiz, CM 12.1 is faster than Touchwiz and has more free ram. But latest release has a bug (random reboot reported by users) which can be fixed manually. I'm running latest release without any problem.

Don't know if I should start another thread but...
I used Aps2SD to create a second partition on my phone after making a backup of the SD card using that program. Restored the SD card and then I linked various apps to the new partition. When everything was done, and working, I used the option "Broken ap cleaner" just in case there were any residue files with "select all"
My error may have been to do a hard shutdown afterwards because now I get "Android System There's an internal problem with your device, and it may be unstable until you factory data reset." Then several aps, including a Google app, Photos, CM security and Gmail stop, in fact all those that run automatically at startup. Gmail and Google are on the internal drive now but were previously linked; CM is on the external partition still. The first thing after that I noticed after the hard shut down was that the icons for linked aps had disappeared and the aps keep stopping if I try to run them.
I read the Aps2SD FAQ and followed the two suggestions regard SU, ie "enable su at boot" and disabled "namespace separation" option.
Any suggestions? Should I
(a) do a "factory data reset"
(b) wipe the SD card and partition and completely reinstall the aps I want? Although if Google app is not working don't know if it can be reinstalled as I'm not sure which oneis meant.
(c) Bite the bullet and install a custom rom?
(d) something else?

It sounds like the app has been corrupted, don't really know how to best advice you.
It sounds like you have to do s factory reset.
I would install a custom ROM.
The only trouble with this is that all the roms have just been shut down so you will have trouble downloading any.
Why model do you have ?
If you want to use a custom ROM pm me and I will send you a link.
The custom roms are much better (in my opinion )

Once you are rooted you can remove any Google/Samsung app. But removing some system apps can lead to bootloop. You can recover from bootloop by re-flashing stock rom.
I can make a flashable zip which removes unnecessary system apps, including the Google/Samsung apps which you want (you flash the zip in recovery and you're done). So let me know which Google/Samsung apps you wanna remove.

I use Open Camera, Color Note and Dolphin Browser (has sound/brightness sliders in videos) as alternatives. Unlike Touchwiz, CM 12.1 is faster than Touchwiz and has more free ram. But latest release has a bug (random reboot reported by users) which can be fixed manually. I'm running latest release without any problem.

Thanks for the offer. So far I have not deleted anything but have used software to partition my SD card and to move stuff out of internal memory onto it - or rather link it. I managed to mess up a bit but seem to have recovered - or at least got a phone with items I want to use. Next week when I've more time I'm hoping to install a Custom ROM. In the meantime I've spent what little time available trying to read as much as I can so that when I do put a Custom ROM on, it goes right first time.

Note that once you flash TWRP, Knox will become 0x1 (initially is 0x0) which means that you void the warranty. In my opinion, I don't care about the warranty because I prefer to have a better experience with my phone. I cannot live without root after I rooted a phone for first time
Regarding the ROM, if you wanna try cm12.1 (which I recommend it, best ROM which is closest to AOSP and never lagged) I'll recommend you to wait some more time because I'll download CM 12.1 sources and build a new update with the help of Nick Verse . He doesn't have enough space on his PC to have both cm12 & cm13 sources. I'm currently trying to extend my Linux partition to have enough space to build though. Is needed about 80gb in total average and I have about 20 and can't resize my partition. I might try to reinstall Linux.

Having a similar issue, i have got my phone so it boots to TWRP 3.1.1-0 but cannot find a ROM file that will install, they all seem to be for j5nlte, even if the file name states j5nltexx. I have tried to ammend/remove the assert lines in the install package to no avail...
any advice would be good

Unable to downgrade from 7.1.1 to 6.0.1

I can't seem to figure out how to downgrade back to a stock ROM after installing this:
lineage-14.1-20170331-UNOFFICIAL-trltetmo.zip (can't post link yet)
I believe it's the Nougat 7.1.1
I want to downgrade to 6.0.1 or 5.1.1
One message I see is "Recovery is not Seandroid Enforcing". Seems like all fixes suggest reinstalling stock ROM, which I'm trying to do, but can't.
Phone is a Samsung Note 4 SM-N910W8 (Rogers)

What's your steps to downgrade to 6.0.1? Did you download Rogers ROM and ODIN it(google is your best friend)?

If ODIN starts and stops immediately, you have a different problem. Did you install the Samsung Android USB driver properly. Anyway, you have a software issue, fix it first. I suggest you watch a few related video on youtube.

Since yesterday I did the following:
- reset my system with a backup image (Bare Metal Restore with True Image) I only have some basic software installed.
- downloaded and installed SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1.5.63.0

Is your phone booting up and functioning? If it is, why are you talking about debrick? I'm assuming that you're "new" to all this. I suggest you read up(especially the stickies) and be comfortable before you go further.

No, it doesn't boot up at all now.
I know I initially said "I" installed the custom ROM, I didn't, I bought it that way. The previous owner won't do anything to help. The only thing he did was provide a link to the ROM he had installed, nothing more, not even the tutorial related to it, I found that on my own (wait, he's made it more than clear how incompetent/ignorant I am as a person).
I've been searching and reading for 3 days straight now. Getting to the point again where I accept defeat, assume the money lost.
Moving on... I've rooted other phones before without issues.
I follow a tutorial on how to downgrade to a stock ROM.

Odin stops with various errors.
I could still boot device into TWRP-3.1.0
Reflashed LineageOS 14.1 ROM from SD to get it working again.
LineageOS 14.1 ROM would boot up, run for almost a minute and a half and shut down.
Pull battery, reboot into LineageOS 14.1 ROM, same thing.
Run Odin, connect device to computer, try to flash stock ROM, error again (different one). Somehow, it says "There is no PIT partition"

Yes, the whole freezer thing overnight.
I have the latest USB drivers installed.
When I connected to the PC, an error popped up saying "...drivers not installed properly..." so I let Windows Update install the correct drivers.
I can connect to the PC now, press the power button for more than 10 seconds, eventually a popup message says "USB Device Not Recognized by Windows"
I've tried the following stock ROMs, 4.4.4, 5.1.1. I finally managed to download 6.0.1, but haven't been able to try it.

All I can say is that if you can boot into TWRP(I assumed you install the N910T version), then your phone is not bricked. All these "debricking" you're doing is potentially harming than fixing.
You assume the risk, when you buy 2nd hand. But based on what you're saying, it sounds like it may also have hardware issues(I don't think software will fix). Was it working when you got it? If you can return it, I suggest you do.

QualcommDrv
this is the Qualcomm Drivers(x86 and x64, choose your system's version and install) .
Without that your pc will not recognize your phone.
Uninstall everything related to samsung from your pc.
Kies, smart link, usb drivers. Use revo-unistaller for this to be sure nothing have left behind.
Go to control panel>system>device manager and remove anything that is related to your phone . If prompt delete drivers associated with that, say yes. Reboot your pc
Have saved QualcommDrv, samsung usb drivers and Odin. These are the tools you are going to need and must have.
after uninstall everything, unzip and install QualcommDrv.
Take off your battery, press power buton for 10 sec . Connect the phone to pc (without battery)
QualcommDrv will install the correct drivers for your phone. After that If in devices and printers it is recognized as Qualcomm 8084 .... its ok to proceed . if not , check again drivers and their installation
If windows says device drivers are not correctly installed and prompt to download and install, stop and cancel it.
IT will replace the QualcommDrv and you will not be able to see your phone correctly.
You need to keep QualcommDrv installed. When this is done and you are sure its correct and working, unplug your phone and install Samsung usb drivers. Reboot pc
unzip odin in desktop (or where ever its easy to access).
with your phone freezed and battery charged try to go to download mode. If succeed, connect to pc and with odin try to flash stock rom. If not ......

this is a hardware failure of the motherboard and will never will be completely fixed. These steps will only help you resurrect your phone and maybe give you the chance to be able to use it again.
It has nothing to do with software that failed to install. It was just the result and not the real problem, which is a diffect motherboard like thousand others. Sadly this is a common problem with Note 4 that happened to many users.
I have the same problem and I also bought it second hand knowing its problematic but not how much.
After that I realized the problem and the solutions to it. Every one of us is having a slightly different behavior of the phone.
I, for example cannt use the phone without the ext sdcard with unbrick image in it. When I take it out phone, will not start, reboot , do nothing.With the card in it its working almost perfect.
So have patience and read and search to know what you are dealing with.

I don't believe you truly downgraded. I'm assuming you were on a 6.0.1 bootloader running a compiled 7.1.1 ROM. It probably hosed some partitions, and other things. Flashing the Stock ROM normalized it.
Most of time flashing a stock touchwiz rom will fix the "damage" that results in flashing a CM ROM.

I have no idea what kernel, bootloader, etc. were/are used in the LineageOS ROM.
What I'd like to do is take a stock ROM and remove the unnecessary BLOATWARE and keep all the rest as it is.
Personal blurb: Why can't OS makers simply do that, make an OS!!! Windows, Android, it really doesn't matter, they're all the same.

"I don't know how" generally isn't in my vocabulary. It's more like, where do I start, what do I need, where's a good tutorial explaining the what, how, and why of doing things.
Do I need to go all the way into the Java source code or are there other ways of removing some of the built-in apps?
Any tutorial/info suggestions are more than welcome. I'm not that familiar with the lingo of ROM customizing, so my searches are pretty much limited to that; "Android ROM customizing" is about the jist of it right now.

I'm having no luck with Kingroot. It says no root available for device.
According to 'one-click-root' website, the device has no way of rooting it.

I've read that a phone may possibly be able to be rooted by using odin to download a TWRP recovery, then booting into that new recovery using hardware keys, instead of rebooting normally. And this results in a rooted phone?
I think I have seen a TWRP that may work with this phone. Any help is appreciated. I'd like to be able to update this thread to include a step by step approach to this and other versions of the same model 920.
I'll continue to post updates as I discover more information.

Ok, so I've read a bit of stuff in the forums on the SM-S920L, mostly about the StraightTalk variant, which apparently uses the same system rom, though I'm not so sure.
At any rate, rather than just throw carp at the phone and hope it sticks, I'm going to teach myself how to do it all myself, a-z, 1,2,3... etc., starting with making stock images of the various components, for recovery purposes. Perhaps the phone can be used as a TracFone again someday, though I have no desire to do so, having already bought another for cheaper that even works better, though not as fancy, just newer.
So, I'll leave it here for now and just update the primary with new information as I discover it, starting with the extraction of the stock images, hopefully without goofing up the phone, lol.
This is an unpopular phone, at least for hackers. But it will be a good tool for expanding my knowledge.
Any help appreciated, such as, 'Is this even necessary? There are files here here and here that will do it all'.

Definitely don't use kingroot.
Do you have a laptop or pc? If so I can help you out. I have the same phone. Mine is straight talk, but it's sm-s920l a tracefone just through straight talk.

Ya I got the straight talk, I have been using king root but I totally bricked and wiped my phone on purpose because I wanted to start fresh and let it update. Having a problem though I used twrp and nuked all my ****, or so I thought. I'm trying to OTA update I'm currently on 5.0.2 and it's saying I have a system update and even after I checked everything to be deleted it still says error and one of my files is modified or some**** like that. I think it's like admin.prop so **** it. I do however want to go systemless root. What do you suggest is the best root and rom for our device?

Well for our phone there is only one custom ROM and it's LineageOS 13.0 https://forum.xda-developers.com/grand-prime/development/unofficial-cyanogenmod-13-0-galaxy-t3491494 It's android 6.0 and it can be rooted too. It's not being updated anymore for our device as far as I know. There is Lineage 14.* but not for our variant.
For systemless root you'll want to go with Magisk. https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 I had Lineage, and don't get me wrong it's worth checking out, but I downgraded back to stock and went with Magisk. You can even get Xposed throughMagisk.
If I was you, I would flash back to stock. You can go to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 and download the first two, Stock Boot and Stock Recovery. Make sure to unzip them because you need the md5 files they extract. I'd wipe everything again and then get into download mode. On your PC fire up Odin, I'm using version 3.10 http://odindownload.com/download/clean/Odin_3.10.0.zip Click BL use the stick boot md5 and then under ap use the stock recovery md5. When it reboots and you set it up do not turn reactivation lock on.
If you don't already have Magisk on your sd card get it on there and install through twrp. It will ask if you want to root. Might make a back up after. I always make backups and then transfer from sd to my pc. I can restore to like 6 different versions of my phone right now lol I'm no expert, I haven't been messing around with all this for long so I hope that all makes sense. :fingers-crossed:

For systemless root you'll want to go with Magisk. https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 I had Lineage, and don't get me wrong it's worth checking out, but I downgraded back to stock and went with Magisk. You can even get Xposed throughMagisk.

Haha ya it does I just wish they didn't treat our phone like it has Ebola or some****. All kinds of **** for the other ones. I agree on the magisk because I really want to try that out. Alright thanks for all the helpful links I come to this site to find **** for ours and I end up looking at a bunch of cool stuff I can't have.
I'm waiting on the pixel 2 XL before I upgrade. We just missing out on too much stuff. I think magisk will keep me busy in the meantime though. Thanks again man I'm Soo add once I get here on all the stuff then I wonder well will this work or this work and by then just like awwww **** it.

Hey, I thought I'd let you know LineageOS 14.1 is available to us now. I can't find a specific thread on it, but you can download it from http://grandprime.ddns.net/jenkins/job/LOS_Builds/# Flash it with twrp. You will want to flash that and then flash open gapps [ARM - 7.1] and then whichever from here http://opengapps.org/ I did all that first, set it up rebooted and then installed Magisk.
It has Substratum pre-installed and it let's you theme it nicely. There is only an unofficial xposed version so far.
Anywho, thought I'd throw that out there.

I'm about to try and put 14.1 and Magisk on mine. Wish me luck!

downloading twrp recovery and rooting
in google search up twrp click on the first link then click on devices on the top right corner then search up your phone download the twrp.img.tar file
power off your phone and press volume down + home button + power button to boot into download mode
in odin select AP then select the twrp.img.tar you downloaded then press start
your phone will reboot then download the SuperSU zip file
then go to settings then go to find my mobile you have to get a samsung account then you will see reactivation lock option turn that off
then power off your phone then press volume up + home button + power button to reboot into twrp recovery
once booted tap the install option then select where you downloaded the supersu zip file swipe to flash it once done flashing you will see the reboot system option to reboot your phone
then your phone should be rooted!
