Onn 8" Surf Tablet root? - Walmart Onn Tablets General

Anybody have any twrp imgs or any advice on how to root this tablet , I just got one for Christmas and was wondering if it was possible to do such a thing

I'm new and I don't know what to do

Or any other custom recovery would be fine

Ok then?

You can root these as long as you have MediaTek drivers setup and have your PC set up to recognize the device while using ABD and are familiar with basic ADB commands. No TWRP or custom ROMs working yet that I've seen. You can find the stock img files on these forums too depending on which model # you're looking for. If you got the 100003561 8" model I can help to a degree. Let me know

I Have this model of tablet and would be interested in your help to root the device. I have unlocked the bootloader and the instructions I was using said I needed a boot.img file for my device but haven't been able to find one. So I decided to make my own, that's when I found out that I need a custom recovery to make my own. So, any help you can give would be very appreciated.

Hard to offer help unless I know which step isn't working. Why don't you try to do a few things and then give me details on what isn't working. It might require browsing more threads as a lot of info is posted elsewhere. First step is to make sure your PC recognises the tablet when plugged in. If not you need the MediaTek drivers installed. It's kind of hit or miss to find the ones that work.

As long as bootloader is viable, you should be fine.
Download the FULL system image from Google:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#nakasi
Make sure you chose nakasi for WiFi or nakasig for 3G tablet, depending on the one you own.
Download file, extract tgz and extract zip inside of that.
Make sure you have adb/fastboot installed and in your path and that your tablet is connected and recognized. Boot into bootloader mode (which needs to be unlocked). Then do a full flash (you can omit the -w option to prevent the flash from wiping sdcard).
This will restore your device OS back to stock.
Depending on what you did, which you didn't really explain, there is probably a quicker/easier option. But without more info, the only advice I can give you is what I did, which should work fine for all circumstances.
Sticky post above this one is the solution..
It seems like you from your post you used a tool kit and something went wrong or you missed a step. Follow one of the following guides.
I recommend the first one..
Manual adb/fastboot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796
Took Kits Automated flashing/ rom install ..
This one is a Windows interface.
......... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475..........
CMD Interface.
...............http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195..........
I recommend the Manual method But only after reading post in all the threads. This will help you get a better understanding of Android..
Good Luck... the post above mine is also correct if you already have a adb environmental set up
Thank you
Thank you all for your advise
The nexus is once again alive

I can access the fastboot mode and the recovery mode, but not the bootloader. I go back on fastboot mode if I try to load bootloader...

Can't unlock device

Greeting team!
I need some help to unlock and access my pic/files on my nexus 4. I have a nexus 4 that runs on stock ROM, boot loader untouched, and Developer option turned on. Unfortunately, I dropped the phone on concrete and broke my screen. The device is functioning fine, charge, screens turn on off but doesn't register touch so I can't unlocked the devices. I have pattern lock and all I really need is to pull pics and files from the devices. Is there any way I can unlock the device other than physically from the screen? I checked with a local shop to replace the screen but realistically it would cost more to replace ($160) than to get a refurbished.
Any advice is greatly appreciated and thank you!!!!

Is USB debugging on? If it's on i think you might be able to get the files with adb.

Do you have adb installed?
I don't have that installed .. Was that the only hope to get unlocked through PC?
Adb is the software on PC that is used to interact with the android device. You can still install adb on your computer using one of the many guides on xda.
Care to elaborate or can you kindly point me to a thread with step-by-step applicable to my case
http://lifehacker.com/the-easiest-way-to-install-androids-adb-and-fastboot-to-1586992378
Here you go. It's not an xda thread, but I think it is good enough for you to understand and install adb. After you install this, you can send the commands through terminal to your phone. You might be able to pull the files off your device to the computer, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Sorry for lack of elaboration on my previous post.

Yes - I remember now. I installed this when I was putting Android on Touchpad. But my command on Linux is incredibly limited and I managed to do so with step-by-step instructions from post. THanks for the link but I don't quite understand how to do it without detailed commands.

Try connecting your device with an USB cable. Then use the shortcut you created when following the above guide to open the command prompt in the correct location. Then type in the command prompt: "adb devices" and press enter. If you see some numbers listed after that you can use adb to get files from your phone. If you don't I'm not aware of any way of getting access to your files.
Will test it out and thank you very much!!

Stuck in TWRP on LG G2- need a Good Samaritan

First off. I'm pretty much a layman at this. Anyone that can solve my issues, I'll gladly pay via PayPal or whatever...
Two months ago, I bought a used LG G2 . It was rooted and running Lollipop.
Sadly, I was a PokemonGo junkie, so when the M'F'ng Niantic a**holes put a block on rooted phones, I attempted the Magisk workaround and ended up bricking my device.
Fortunately I found a solution via You Tube and was able to restore to the factory KitKat / AT&T.
THE CURRENT problem is that yesterday I re-rooted the device, installed TWRP, but did something wrong to where it will not fully reboot and I'm stuck in TWRP. I've watched and read about 20 "fix it" instructionals, which rely on using a PC. I'm using a laptop running XP and every time I have downloaded, installed, and tried to update the damn LG USB driver, it won't f*ing update. I'm going mad and ready to jump off a bridge.
Supposedly, this is the place to go. for answers, so ...CAN ANYONE HELP?!! Again, I'm a layman. I need VERY simple, step by step solutions, that account for ANYTHING that might go wrong, since so far, it always does.
Thank you, if you read this.
Ok Can you access to twrp ?
(Sorry for my english i'm french)
If you are in the TWRP, just download some other kk rom, transfer it to your phone and install, one question, what TWRP is it ? 2.8.7.0. ?

Agreed. Also, if there's no communication between PC and device, you may need an OTG to flash from.

It's TWRP 2.7.0. I kind of know in theory what needs to be done, but I don't know how to do it. I thought I backed everything up using Titanium and TWRP, but maybe the KK ROM is gone? I dunno... I was actually hoping to install Lollipop
What model do you have?
If it is d802, then there is an easy-to-flash rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development-d802/rom-pure-stock-lg-google-apps-t3477635/page1
To transfer it to the phone, you can use OTG as Dork said: put the rom on a usb-stick and connect it to the phone with an OTG cable. Most versions of twrp support OTG.
Another way is to get linux for your PC. You're really better off with linux than XP, but you can also just boot with a live-cd. In linux, USB generally just works, though sometimes you have to be root because ordinary users may not have permission.
Thanks for the replies, but being very new at all this, I don't know how to do any of the things suggested. I ended up finding a you tube video which walked me through downloading lg flash tool and some .dll file, and on my work computer with windows 7, I was able to install the usb drivers & change the port number which allowed LG flash to work. The crappy XP didn't have that option on the device manager menu and wouldn't install the drivers.
Anyway, I got it restored to ATT stock KitKat. I wanted Lollipop and Magisk, so I tried installing TWRP with AutoRec, then got stuck in TWRP and bricked again. So I did the whole lg flash to KitKat process again. Now Im sick of messing with it and bricking my phone. I cant find any super simple step by step tutorial that makes sense to a layman like me, or that doesn't leave out steps, or provide expired links, or account for anything that could go wrong. I had hoped this was the place to come, but no luck so far. I know its time consuming for someone to make up a truly easy to follow guide for an older device, using layman terms that my grandma could follow, and I work 2 jobs and dont have hours to try to thoroughly learn OS programming, so I guess Ill just leave well enough alone and live with KitKat and without the ability to mask my root.

Do what everybody here has done: read. And when you say "I can access TWRP. I just don't know what to do with it." you havn't even read the basics.

I have tried reading a lot of different threads. As I said before, I don't understand the "tech talk" for lack of a better word. When I'm reading "bootload" this, and " sideboot" that, and kernels, and loki, and CM, and mods, and .kdz and ATD,....I don't know what all that means, & there's no OS dictionary to translate. I can't seem to find any threads that explain it for newcomers trying to learn.
Im an accountant. I can prepare corporate tax returns with my eyes closed, but cell phone programming is Greek to me.

How can I root my Asus Zenpad S8 Z580C?

I been looking around and havent found anything on how to root my device. Is there any info on how to root my device? Its upgraded to Android Marshmallow
bump
I've been looking for over a year
I've been looking for an answer to that question for over a year now. From what I've found it can't be done once you upgrade to marshmallow. If you downgrade to Android 5 you can though. There's instructions on how to do both on this site. I had rooted before upgrading to to marshmallow if you search "root Asus z580c" on here you will find the instructions easily but it only works on nugat. This is something that's been driving me crazy for months now and every once in a while I do a search to see if someone has found a way to do it...that's how I came across this post actually...but no luck. I've considered going back to android 5 plenty of times but for me there not that many apps I use that I need it rooted for anymore anyway. The biggest one is adblock but if you search for an app called DNS66 its an ad blocker that works really well and doesn't require root. its not just an ad blocking browser its an actual app. Good luck.
This pisses me off on a cellular level. This is such a good tablet, spec-wise. But Asus dumped updates after a year, and it seems like no one is interested in trying to crack it open. Which is a shame, because debloated, this thing would run so well. The screen is fantastic, the size is great. But all the Asus bloat on it infuriates me. I hate ZenUI, and while you can use a different launcher, it doesn't remove it all-together (for instance, the pull down menu stays as it is). If anyone is trying to do work on this front and needs a tester, I'll happily lend a hand. I'm nowhere near skilled enough to DIY, but I can certainly follow instructions and get you logs and crap.

I tried it from a Linux laptop as I couldn't get Win10 to recognise the tablet at all...
I changed the script to point at local adb/fastboot rather than the ".mac" executables, so it should perform exactly the same actions - and all seemed OK to begin with - but one of the reboots after a flash stage never returned to a screen... and now it refuses to even start up.
Whether it was something I did, or the script, I cannot say...
is it possible to flash the stock rom via fastboot ?. I have twrp installed, but it gives me error 7 when I try to flash the stock ROM.zip. And the tablet doesn't turn me on either, it stays on the asus logo. thanks

I plan on doing this too, you have to put your Chromebook in developer mode and then you can use ADB and Fastboot, they are built in. The only possible snag I was reading about is that you might have to use a script to update ADB and Fastboot for them to work properly. Then you can use Fastboot to unlock the bootloader and boot or flash TWRP. I'm hoping it will work, I have done it before. Once your Chromebook is in developer mode(not the developer channel), you can open up the terminal and type 'shell', and you will have ADB and Fastboot there.
It is indeed possible. I have a Chromebook Pro and had to do this for my Mate 10 which was a *****. Let me find the thread, it essentially has a script that allows certain apps to run in system mode, that way you don't have to keep using +r etc etc. i'll find it.
And yes, it has to be in Developer mode and it's different depending on which Chromebook you have

Ah thanks, I came across that thread when I was researching it too. I've never rooted a Huawei phone before, but I believe the OnePlus should be pretty easy, it just needs a couple of basic fastboot commands so I'm hoping it's just a matter of getting fastboot to recognize the device and run the commands.

So I was able to unlock the bootloader with my Chromebook. I had to put it into developer mode, and then I ran a quick script that I found on a guide here: https://www.howtogeek.com/358285/how-to-use-adb-and-fastboot-on-a-chromebook/amp/
Then once I booted my Oneplus 6T into fastboot mode, fastboot recognized the device and unlocked the bootloader.
Another update: everything works fine, ADB and fastboot. The 6T does not have an official TWRP Recovery yet, but the unofficial one works okay, and you can just boot it rather than installing it, and then sideload Magisk to root that way. All up and routed here with Chromebook only.

that must be the exynos processor so I'm not sure what the fix is if there is one. Just brainstorming here but could you install ADB and fastboot on the Linux terminal if your Chromebook has Linux app functionality already?
