Disable OnePlus Launcher - OnePlus 8T Guides, News, & Discussion

Just sharing in case anyone has had the same experience as I. I've set Nova to be the default launcher and several times throughout the day i have to re-select which launcher i want to be default (oneplus or nova). I cleared data on oneplus launcher, removed all permissions including allowing control over system settings and location, both of which were reset back to allow without my input.
adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 net.oneplus.launcher
This will break recents, see below for more. Try re-installing the launcher from the store, clear cache, reboot then set your preferred launcher.
This seems to stop the re-prompt that only some of us are experiencing. i'm running unlocked KB2005 if that makes a difference.
--- UPDATE ---
This broke recents for me. I reinstalled OnePlus Launcher from the google play store and recents still wasnt working. I eventually uninstalled it then reinstalled the system apk (/system/system_ext/priv-app/OPLauncher2/OPLauncher2.apk). I then updated via Google Play store and rebooted. I now have recents back and for about 12 hours now i have not had a re-prompt to specify which launcher i want as my main. Looking back, i probably could have just installed the launcher from the play store and just rebooted. It looks like a reboot is necessary to get recents working again (may need to clear cache on the launcher too).
Below is what i'm running with no issues with a re-prompt (so far):
Build: KB2005_15_200918
OnePlus Launcher: 5.0.1.1.201016174749.07a9106
Nova Launcher: 6.2.14 (BETA)

I've been using Nova Launcher also and haven't had any issues with the phone trying to switch back to OnePlus Launcher.

No issues with Nova here either.

OMG, I use Nova all the time....this better not be happening. I'm getting sick and tired of all the CRAP these OEM's are pulling lately.

Ya I have had the same issue too. But I came to the conclusion to stick with the oneplus launcher. You can swipe down to get the shelf which actually is very handy if you have the Google action blocks and a house full of automated google compatible accessories. And I can. Still swipe right to get the Google feed.

Try selecting the OnePlus launcher as the default home app then switchback to Nova. I had issues until I did this switcheroo.

Received my phone yesterday...works great!
Might be the best OnePlus phone I've had so far.
Had the 6, and the 7 Pro, and now the 8T.
Using Nova and I have no problems at all!
This phone replaced a Galaxy S20 FE that I sent back today. There's NO comparison in quality of the hardware and especially the software.

I had same issues.
What worked for me was setting Nova launcher as default.
Then going into settings>system>accessibility and turning Nova launcher on. Haven't had the issue since.

Been using nova launcher the past 3 days and havent had a problem with oneplus launcher.

Odd launcher behavior

Hey all,
Weird thing just started happening yesterday on my Nexus. Whenever I power on the tablet, I am prompted for the default launcher choice. This shows up on the lockscreen, so somehow the unit is forgetting that adw is my default launcher. Once I make the choice, all is good. Just bugs me that I have to do that everytime.
I am rooted, and used that to change my screen density settings to get a real tablet look rather than the enlarged phone look. No problems there as this just started yesterday. I have installed home switcher and that did not do the trick. Could it be a conflict with a recently installed app?
Any insight or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I'm not sure but things you can try:
Goto adwlauncher app settings and unset defaults and sleep tablet, and reset defaults on the lockscreen with always
Convert adwlauncher to a system app and repreform the above. (Requires root) may not help, but I believe this may cause adwlauncher to run quicker and not throw anr's although I haven't seen 1 anr on my nexus 7 yet!!
Disable the stock launcher. Settings, apps, all, launcher, force stop, disable. (No root req'd)
You can also try clearing the defaults here first to see of it helps.

Thanks for the reply Joe!
Your ideas prompted a little targeted searching and I discovered I could 'freeze' the stock launcher (disable it) using Titanium Backup. My Nexus booted right into ADW as I wanted.
Thanks!

Change default Home app

I installed Pixel 2 Launcher.apk as default Home app. But when I reboot phone, I need manully set Pixel Launcher as default Home app, otherwise Home app will still be Launcher3.
How can I disable or delete Launcher3? Where is Launcher3 app in system?
Even I am using pixel launcher but I am not facing any such issues. If you have not already done, go to settings --> apps --> click gear icon(top right) --> under 'home' select ''pixel launcher'.
P.S : I am using pixel launcher v1.7

If your device is rooted just uninstall the default launcher using 'System App remover (root)' app. If your device is not rooted try to install third party launcher preferably 'Nova Launcher' and reboot, then set pixel launcher as default( As specified in my previous post). I am not sure whether this works. But initially I installed nova launcher and then later pixel. Hope it works.

I advise you not to uninstall any of the system apps because you might have extra problems with installing OTA update. You should only freeze system apps, so they are not active, nor visible
Thanks Ved K's suggestion. I install 'System App Remover' app and find Launcher3.apk's path. Rename this apk, so I get Pixel 2 Launcher as my default Home app when I reboot system everytime.
The next I want solve is set Live Wallpapers - Your world, Solar System as my default Home screen when reboot.

using the same launcher, not having such issue here
I'm using Microsoft Launcher and I don't find any issues keeping it as default launcher.
I just selected (ALWAYS) When asked Just once/always while touching home button.
I have MiA1.
Another alternate is to reset DEFAULTS in settings menu from the LAUNCHER3 APP.
There is no way to freeze Launcher3 if device is not rooted.
You can neither disable nor uninstall default launcher and imo! After playing with ADB tools for years and switching/flashing multiple/heavy OSs in my various devices I find rooting a waste. It makes your device vulnerable (not talking about security, talking about performance) and you eventually miss the future updates that feels miserable (flashing them is time taking, not for worthy people as every worthy individual is busy person).

How to revert back to Oreo app switcher and recents on Pie

Notes:
Code:
This also re-enables holding recents for multiwindow.
This removes Swipe up to Home from [I]Settings > System > Gestures[/I], so turn it off before reverting to Oreo method
Adb:
1) Enable USB Debugging
2) Execute adb shell in your terminal of choice on desktop
3) Type 'pm uninstall --user 0 com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher
If you wish to revertto the Pie navigation, simply reinstall 'Pixel Launcher' from the Play Store. It will return immediately.
Source
---------------------
Root method:
(1) Disable Pixel Launcher with an app like this.
Re-enable to revert back
Awesome tip. Worked perfectly on my Pixel 2XL. Thanks man!!
Now no home app at all
while this does indeed revert to the Oreo version of recents, it also wipes out the entire launcher, so I have no home app available! Just sits here saying "phone is starting" About to reinstall pixel launcher, I hope all my customizations and icon placements haven't been lost!
Yesssss! Thank you! The new recents app switcher is awful
@23Six thanks for this
Works good for me I just froze it and titanium backup I'm using Nova Launcher

Yeah you're going to need to use some launcher like I use Nova Launcher I don't think your phone will work if you don't have any launcher set

Yeah I forgot to mention that that Pixel Launcher is interested with Pie navigation system so they come (and go) as a pair. You shouldn't lose your home layout since disabling does not remove app data as it does not uninstall.
And if you did uninstall, then you're in luck because Pixel Launcher home layout is backed up in the cloud (for Pixel phones at least).
You are a lifesaver, thanks so much! This post should definitely be on the xda homepage because I have been searching for weeks!
Works perfectly on my Pixel 1 after the 9.0 OTA. I am using Lawnchair as launcher.
Does this work on oneplus 6?
Thank you so much! It feels so goooood to have the classic app switcher back.
The link for the root app doesn't work anymore, so in case anyone is wondering, it's "Chef's freezer".

For OnePlus users, try 'pm uninstall --user 0 net.oneplus.launcher'
Awesome tip... Unfortunately, there is no way to lock a particular app from getting cleared from memory when you hit the clear all button.. Earlier versions had this feature.. (lock button)
This is awesome, new Overview in PIE is SO damn slow and uncomfortable, compared to the old one.
Is there any way to disable this with ADB but keep using Pixel launcher? I don't want to use Nova. I love the simplicity of the Pixel Launcher but I hate the slowness of the new Overview.

Modded Pixel launchers should be just fine as they use different package names, however I did not test this.

Yes the modded pixel launchers can be installed however, in the "Rootless Launcher" if I install the special APK to enable Google Feed integration it fails to install because it requires Pixel launcher to be uninstalled.
I guess the only way to downgrade to a previous Pixel Launcher is to root the phone and completely uninstall the system Pixel launcher first, right?
I assume there is no other way to downgrade a system app
Sent from my Pixel 2
Is there a way to delete this through root explorer?
Is there any way to retain the lock app feature on the overview section? This way, all apps that are locked won't be cleared when you click on clear all... I know I've asked this before.. But couldn't find it anywhere else..

Installing an old version of OnePlus Launcher on top of the current installation did the trick as well. But i Uninstalled oneplus Launcher via adb now because the recents were laggy. But the lag is still present.
Great! Thank you

So this probably works for almost everybody.
For me though it did not. I happen to have Xiaomi Mi A1 and in there it is still named launcher3, even on Android Pie. Weird right?
So to revert if you have my problem use. 3) "pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.launcher3".
Still very helpful post and link to Reddit! Thank you!
Do you know if there's any chance with Pie that there will be a Recent Apps Switcher that doesn't remove apps from the list automatically?
Till Oreo, my Recent Apps button also worked as a kind of "To Do Reminder": By scrolling thru the apps I saw what I started and still had to come back to. With Oreo, even the "Lock" icon on the apps didn't help - Android just removed older entries, even if the app was still in memory (I could tell because when I started it again from the launcher, it came up immediately).
So my hope is that the new custom app switcher abilities could gives us a switcher that can be customized when to remove apps (my choice: "Never"
So can I hope or does the concept not allow that?

Apps will not uninstall

Not sure when this started but I have found I can no longer uninstall apps by dragging the app to the "Uninstall" on the desktop.
I first noticed this a few months ago.
I am 100% stock on P with latest security and have never messed with the phone.
I use Google Now launcher.
This is no big deal as I just go to settings and apps, find the app and uninstall, i'm just curious if i'm the only one and if anyone knows a solution.
i think this feature works with launcher if u using another launcher maybe it not works try it with stock launcher Quickstep

Thanks, I guess you are probably right in thinking it's a launcher issue as it work fine in settings.
Not worth changing the launcher for such a small issue.
Thanks.

Android 11, oxygen 11 final, default launcher won't stick

I noticed on the android 11 final version, and with a fresh install that when setting a home launcher that ain't the OnePlus original launcher. after different amount of time the when going to home, the phone keeps asking for the "what app to set to default"
So with the OnePlus launcher it sticks and won't ask ever again for default launcher.
But with 4 different launchers, Microsoft, Nova and more, after second and more, up to 20 times going to home screen, it asks for what app to set to default launcher?
Any one more than me experiencing this issue?
It's quite annoying to keep seeing the default launcher.... So please write here if you having this issue.
There's another thread regarding that issue and I've posted an answer: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=83684893&postcount=5.
I had this problem too. I solved it by setting Nova Launcher as default in the Nova Launcher settings... Afterwards i can see it in my OP8pro standard apps as well...
Cheers
Clark
I did that too. However, sometimes the machine switches to the OP Launcher - it must be some kind of error in the system.
Have Nova as default and still watching 11 behavior...
Deliting the launcher and reinstalling, then first time it says would u want nova launcher as default say yes and solved at least for me. Hope messages from developers
I don't know what happened to my phone, but since a few weeks I didn't experienced this issue anymore.
