Custom rom with less ram usage and/or better management for my Moto G4 Plus 32/2 ? - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have a Moto G4 Plus XT1642 32G/2G.
Some apps are closed automaticly when in background or when my screen goes on standby (podcast app for instance...).
I set them to "no optimize" in battery optimization but it doesn't help.
I have a lot of apps installed and i think i have just an insufficient ram.
I'm doing a little clean to try to resolve the issue but i'm asking myself if a custom rom could help ?
If yes, do you have one to recommend ?
I would like a very stable one with no random reboots, and a good working of my two sims and my 128 GB microSD card. I don't need special features. Usually i liked roms like LineAge OS (it was Cynaogen when i used it on older phones) or Slimroms...
I have actually the stock rom Android 7 and it is quite stable. I have about once reboot once a 2 or 3 month.
If i with to a custom rom i want to be sure it worth (stability and better ram usage for my issue with closing apps), because i have a lot of stuff to reinstall if i flash my phone...
Thanks
Bye

Just passing thru for old times sake, I haven't had my mg4p in a while. It looks like there are at least two ROMs that have been updated fairly recently, but they both appear to suffer from freezing issues. 2GB RAM is pretty minimal now a days. You can partition your SD card to increase RAM if you're rooted. Trouble is magisk can't hide your apps anymore, so you might have trouble with banking apps and such. But if that's not a concern, root your phone, try any recently updated custom rom installed with pico Gapps to keep things minimal, install the apps you want. Or if you don't have paid apps, install custom ROM without Google (gasp), and use aurora store to get apps. That's what I do with a different phone, and I get by just fine without Google. Either way look for guides to partition SD card for increased RAM. Or shop around for a g4p with 4GB RAM. Good luck.

Thanks for all you explanations.
For now, it seems that my cleaning has helped a lot : uninstalling or disabling all unecessary apps. I hope it will be sufficient. Since i did it, i didn't have background music or podcasts apps closed by force
Bye

Apps installed in SD card

I am in the process of deciding to buy a Hero. I found in various other sites that Android apps cannot be installed in the SD card. Is it true. Is this a major inconvenience ? What are the implications ?
If you use the stock ROM, it does not install applications on the SD card. This means it uses the on-board memory for storage. Since this is shared with the operating system (Android), things start slowing down as the system tries to make enough space to run portions of apps in memory if you have downloaded and installed a lot of apps. However, custom ROMs such as MoDaCo's have been tweaked to allow you to store apps on the SD, saving your precious on-board memory for running apps.
you will have to install tons of apps, probably loads of which you will never even use, before you run into memory issues. There is plenty of memory onboard for the average joe to tinker and play with. You don't have to root and load a custom rom on these handsets to make them good, they are pretty slick straight out the box.

Indeed. After installing tons of apps, I realized that I had 40mb of free space on board yesterday and of course it is frustrating. However, I went through all the applications in "Manage Applications" screen and cleared all the cache they have been using. Now I have like double empty space ~80mb. And of course I still have tons of applications and games.
Agreed. Dont believe the statement 'Things start slowing down', he doesnt know what hes on about.
There are two sections of memory, one for storing apps + os and one for running apps. If you install 500 apps and almost fill the apps + os part the memory for running apps is unaffected.
I'm sure storing apps on the SD card is fine, but remember that this was originally done for the T-Mobile G1 which had little memory for apps, the hero has a lot more.

Problems with MT3G speed/lag

Hello, ive been having some issues with my MT3G over the past few days and ive noticed my phone has been lagging a lot even after rooting, installing latest cyanogen rom and using compcache. here is my setup:
mt3g 32b
cyanogenmod 4.2.11.1
Compcache default settings
lock home app in mem, otherwise i get reloads
i think the problem is that random apps keep turning on by themselves even after i kill them with advanced task manager. phone lags, i check task manager and apps like amazon mp3, market, messaging (i use handcent), locale (i now uninstalled it), settings and other random apps and i never launched any of these apps. so i kill all the apps, the phone runs fine and fast but about 1 min later other random apps load again and i have to rekill them. what gives? ive tried wiping and reinatalling to no avail... why does everyone else seem to have constantly fast mt3g's when i have essentially the same setup?
Seriously, no one?? Come on guys, at least someone has some advice?
have you tried changing your linux swap instead of compcache? Also, have you tried the ram hack?
I'm not sure why you have those things turning on again. I don't have that problem with my mt3g
double post
Thanks for the reply, I don't use linux swap (apps2sd?) considering the phones internal memory is quite a bit. I read about the ram hack but I use the phone for gaming quite a bit so I don't see how I would benefit from that. If linux swap really does make the difference then I guess I have no choice. The only thing that worries me is the sd card wearing down because of it although it doesn't seem to be much of an issue with G1 users or am I wrong?
linux swap is not apps2sd. it gives the phone more virtual memory that it feeds off the memory card to make up for the lack of ram over the 32A. ext is where the apps are stored for apps2sd, but the phone does not need that.
The ram hack only makes 3D gaming suffer. Games like ProjectINF, RoboDefense, Pacman, etc don't suffer from this. Even then, some 3D games still work fine for me, like Toon Warz.
And not the SD card doesn't really go bad, it has on some people, but even then, most sd card come with 5 year warranties. My transcend comes with a lifetime warranty, so you shouldn't worry about it.
Thank you, that cleared up a LOT of my confusion! I read somewhere that Amon_Ra's recovery image will setup linuxswap with one of its commands (partitioning?) or am I mistaken?
it partitions it into the 3 sections. fat32+ext+linux swap. This is what I did. However, this will give you the ext which will transfer all the apps to your sd. you can however, delete your ext if you don't want that using parted in adb. from there, you can use the swapper app and set it to your liking. I use 64mb and 40 swappiness.
Thanks for the help Tazz, linux swap made a difference. There's still a small lag sometimes but much less than before and less frequent. By the way, swapper seems to have been removed from the market for some reason.

[Q] LG E400-f - worth using+OS recommendations?

Hi guys, I did a bit of a search but I couldn't find any threads actually discussing the merits of this phone, hence my creation of this thread.
So first off, is this phone even worth using, or should I just give up on it and buy a better one? The internal hardware isn't that great; the only reason I got it is it was cheap, and it's my first smartphone haha. I'm trying to play Ingress on it, but they don't scale their UI at all so it's kind of hard to play on the small screen, and it can be kind of slow as well.
Secondly, what OS would you recommend using? The problem with the default Android OS is the memory partitioning: there's 1GB of memory on the phone, but it's partitioned into System Memory (150MB) and the rest is internal memory. All the preloaded apps are on System Memory, so when they update they fill up the System Memory and I have to uninstall the updates. Also some of the apps I download get installed to System Memory and I can't move them to internal memory, very frustrating.
Looking forward to whatever advice you guys can give me! Cheers.
Use stock OS with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250759, less lag than 4.0.4.

Best ROM for performance/overclocking/gamedev?

Hi all,
I am using a T350 to test some game builds on and I am getting low frame rates because it is a few years old now
Which ROM is the most "stripped/bloatfree" version which I could use to do my tests on, And can you recommend any which have overclocking functions, and if so, what kind of stable settings have been found to work on a T350.
Thanks!
The main problem seems to be the lack of RAM, As it has 1.5GB but using JazzROM, The system uses almost 1gb of memory alone. How can I free up memory space from system processes ?
Honestly there isn't a whole lot you can do, you could maybe free up a few more MB if you go into system processes and kill some random stuff. But you're already on a custom ROM so there won't be much if anything to kill.

JazzROM is stock base ROM, that's why, it is NOT really slimmed down version. What you can do is, you can use root explorer and go to System --> Apps, and delete some apps (make sure these apps can be downloadable from either Galaxy App Store or Google Play Store)
Ok thanks guys. I set "do not run background processes" and deleted some system apps, I can get about 800mb of free memory. One other thing I wanted to ask is that when I press the power button on the device to put it in standby mode, It goes to a lock/clock screen and doesnt turn the display off using JazzROM, Any ideas?
