Oxygen one UI - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello, I've been on the fence for a very long time with getting a OnePlus device. I was finally ALMOST ready to buy the 8 pro but the curved screen kept me away. I've always stuck with the pixel and have had no problems with them besides the terrible screen restate. I really wanted to buy the 8T pro until I saw what they did to the UI in os 11. I really don't care for Samsung at all. Will OnePlus still be the ultimate stock Android ? Is the core OnePlus community happy with os 11 UI overhaul at all?

If I had known coming from a Pixel 2xl, I would have waited. Not happy with it at all.
Hardware is nice for sure, but camera software is subpar imo and poor 5ghz wifi has me puzzled still.
That said I would get a OnePlus over anything else... Maybe just not a good pixel phone.

I left Pixels & Samsung for the OnePlus, and have not looked back! 8Pro is an excellent ddd (daily driver device)??

So how do you feel about the new UI ? It's so close to samsung now ?

Not concerned until I have the official stock ota on my 8pro to do hands-on!

Don't be worried about the UI. I'd people complain they'll change it, some respect the same from Samsung.
Plus with the development in XDA and the like you can rest assured that other ROMs will be available.
Bare in mind this move from OnePlus is to steal Samsung customers, they've already done that Vs the ultra, I'm one of them.
Thank God I didn't buy the ultra (ordered but it didn't come, Exynos is a turd)
Paranoid Android, carbon ROM, lineage, several Magisk ROMs,, there's even miui and Nubia lol,, don't worry about the new 11, plus things can still change, I'm sure anyone helping with the alpha and beta versions are reporting that.
I'm remaining optimistic about 11, might be alone in that but what else can I do?
At this point in time and since it's launch, there is no better phone than the 8 pro, installed a GCam app today and that's pretty much sorted the camera for me, wasn't bad to begin with

Never cared for Samsungs One UI, preferred Cyanogen/LinageOS any day on any Samsung (as long as it was a device where the correct RIL was anailavle, for obvious reasons). On all Samsungs, and OnePluses I've had I've pretty much always used Nova Launcher (as I would on any Pixel too). So, the only place where I actually notice any OEM UI:s is on the settings page... And ind the case of OP8 A11 (as I'm currently using as daily driver), I actually kind of like it. It's smooth, easy. Especially in dark mode (I always use dark mode). I'm all for it. I like the fact that OP does this instead och forcing a bunch of apps on us (Samsung-style) and weird framework changes. This is no reason to "not get a OP device" if you ask me.

Phone got sluggish over time

Hey guys!
Title says it all. Got brand a new device last month (build date 11/1/2017), which started to decrease in overall performance after some weeks, meaning snappiness is gone, ui experience doesnt feel as smooth as it used to.
Nothing helps, already full wiped. Clean flashed android 9.0. Apps arent the source, since it's right there after a full wipe with just the standard apps.
Only factor seems to be "time". Since I am not the only one with that problem (see marques here://youtu.be/5_5zZnuB71w), I wonder who can relate and found the culprit.
Thanks!
I will not say I did not notice performance issues. But clearing of apps definitely did help. Also with the latest Android pie update it is back to its original smooth performance.

already did that, before full wiping. since the latter didnt help, it didnt help either.
I can't say I've ever experienced lag on my pixel 2 xl. It's been going so strong since a few months ago when I got it. With pie it feels like it just got smoother and looks like it's actually holding animations at 60fps no frame drops it's very nice
I can count on one hand the number of times I've observed noticeable lag/jankiness on my P2XL, and it almost always happens when I try to do too much after rebooting, before the system has settled. On prior Android devices, I would routinely clear the background apps, but my P2XL doesn't seem to require that. It runs just fine without me micromanaging it. I *do* use SD Maid (in Google Play) about once a week, so that probably helps. I also use Nova Launcher because I can't get used to the stock launcher. And I reduce all animations to 0.5x (Settings > Dev options).
Mine is definitely not sluggish at all. Snappy as ever, and nicer now with Pie.
yea first pixel 2 xl i got (this one is a replacement) seemed to get a little less snappier from time to time, but always got back on track. so i know the real fluid and lagfree pixel experience.
but as this case (and the yt video) shows, it can go another route, too. question is, is it just a hardware thing?

Highly doubt it's a "hardware thing" Snapdragon 835 is s great SoC, your lag could be due to a few things, number of apps installed, modifications to the system (ie magisk, Xposed, kernel, etc) rogue apps. I've had no issues with slowdowns or lag, no sure if you're stock or not but I run AquriOS with Flash kernel and magisk root, and everything runs flawlessly.

Re reading your original post, it's either a hardware malfunction or you are getting used to the"snappiness" of the device and you are feeling it's not fast enough. TBH my device runs as nicely as it did they say I got it.

could it be a hardware malfunction if the benchmarks all perform as expected?
i sure didn't get used to it, since i had my original pixel 2 xl (this one is a replacement) for more like half a year without feeling less snappiness

The performance is not hat much different. Check xda analysis. Numbers cant lie. Pixel somehow is smoother. I own S9, OP6, and 2XL and i knew what is what. Stop watching too much youtube videos. They all are hired by oneplus

you mean i watched a yt video and then got the idea that my phone is slow? oh boi..
There's plenty of people complaining on the same issue in the comments. Makes me concerned. So far i didn't experience any sluggishness on my device. Today i feel very happy about my choice for phone, because i got an opportunity to spend minutes with Note 9 and oh boy, do i not miss Samsung... That's like getting back to Nexus 6... Crazy.
Official Pie has been running smoother than DP2 through DP5 for me. No complaints here. Still wish RAM management was better but that's been on the aggressive side since day 1.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
MKBHD is not lying when he said the oneplus 6 is smoother. Anandtech which is a reputable source confirms that the OnePlus 6 is smoother and faster than any phone on the market. The 2nd fastest phone is not the pixel, it's the xiaomi mi mix 2s.
The issue I have is my phone works prefect and then will just stutter...like lag and almost freeze up for a moment. Resetting doesn't fix.
Been having issues as well last month. Started fresh and wiped with pie and still lags. Not sure what's happening. Cannot figure it out. No rogue apps. Haven't installed a new app in weeks.
The phone just hangs more often now. Never had this issue since I got the phone around December.

The phone lags a lot (ch rom at least). Switching, opening tabs, etc). Overall animations stutter a lot. I hope some developers find it in their hearts to help our poor souls and release a rom with all the xiaomi junk removed.

I've the 3/32GB global/EU version. It's the worst new phone I've bought ever when it comes to performance. It's just a week old and I've installed the apps that I had on the Note 5 before. Everything is more laggy than with my old 5. I'm really frustrated, because it seems to work fine for others.

Damn, maybe there's something wrong with the software then. Maybe unlock bootloader and flash fastboot ROM of your choice?

Xioami.eu miui rom? Not the model version itself. If u are not familiar with it and I feel like many aren't, Eu rom is like a debloated stock rom and less buggy across all xiaomi phones compared to the stock global/China rom it ships with. U should also use 3rd party apps like fluid navigation gesture on the playstore for no stutter instead of miui's full screen gesture from settings. A lot of xiaomi phones can be a way better experience this way even on miui until custom roms are out. Global version for more bands+EU rom instead of global/China+apps like fluid navigation, Google cam, dolby/viper etc. Let me know if it helps

Hardware and cost is good but chinese software is probably the worst part about buying a phone that has trouble getting bootloader unlocked. Xiaomi and oneplus seem to have an advantage with that over most of the other companies even though xiaomi makes u wait forever at least it's still possible

Thanks for all the tips man! Sure it helps! I can't wait till Friday for the 360 hours of waiting to be up. I will right away install EU rom, and as you said, it already is a much more fluid experience, but even after that I will install the fluid navigation gesture as you suggested, and also a different launcher.
One thing though, I am crazy about better sound and with stock MIUI there is no way to 'tweak' Bluetooth sound (EQ, better, bass, control base frequency, etc). I used to have a Note 8 I gave to my uncle which had a crazy amount of tweaks that made me much more satisfied with Bluetooth sound even though we all know it is just 'average sound'.
Do you know which vyper4android mod works best for the redmi note 7? Can I still something similar? have you tried any? Or is it just a universal one?

Well source code will be released in December and it'll take few months for devs to create custom roms. So I'd say even the ones who always use their devices with custom roms/kernels will need to stick with Color OS for half a year ? I'm not too jolly about it but it's something I can use to experience stock rom and experience so I'll be able to share native opinions here.
Color OS is not half bad. Though it has horrible memory managament and aggressive app policies plus security. It's kind of a feature that comes with devices imported from China. After all the government still has to censor and regulate things thanks to Communism. I'd say you can get used to their Android skin. The only thing that is bugging me is how strict their third party app security is. It won't allow to install a lot of apps and will scan each app for half a minute before installing. You can't even turn off this kind of strict app censure unlike Xiaomi devices with MiUi skin.

Don't be. It's close not as bad as sounds. I used it with ease for more than a week even though I'm an advanced user who uses magisk and lucky patcher for debugging reasons all the time and Color os has made it really difficult for me to use them. If you're an average user color os can be a fine daily driver. Even though it has stupid memory, battery management it can still last a day. I've successfully ditched color os thanks to @thesprintster for his unofficial lineage os I can live with a near-stock aosp like experience with face unlock, fingerprint, lucky patcher, magisk working fine. The only thing that custom development couldn't solve (yet) is the 48mp camera which comes with color os. If you're the type of person who uses high resolution pictures all the time I advice you to stay on Color os. If you can live without it(like I do) I can fully help and guide you how to install lineage or aosip rom on your rm5p or rmq. It's up to you whether or not you buy this device but for me it was a best buy for 164$ and I don't regret buying it even though I've bricked my device like 10+ times in the early testing period.

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, I removed it from my basket, was going to buy it on AliExpress' 11.11 sale and decided not to.
Good to know that it's not all doom and gloom. Probably have to wait for more dev work if Realme open things up.
How's AOSIP working on this phone? Using the AOSIP Pie ROM on my current phone and having no end of problems now - random reboots, boot loops out of the blue and battery drain (Honor 5X - old device I know...)
Thanks again.

Everything is fine. Just as it should be. I've tried like 7+ gsi roms and now aosip and lineage. All of them works fine and without issues. I've been on lineage for a week and battery/performance is way superior to stock chingchong color os ?*
ColorOS is pure ?. Heard that android 10 will be close to stock android.. really? Saw the screenshots recently.. same colorOS crap! Why they make based on colorOS? Cook up a ui based on aosp and call it stock android. I think actually realme misleading buyers that they are going to implement "Close to stock android"!!??

Mi 9T Review - Your opinions?

Hello everyone, recently i picked up mi 9t. What a phone...
I can say that i am more than satisfied with how phone performs and what i got for 300 bucks. I decided to make a short video review and give my opinions about it. I am decent user which means that i am usually using my phone to browse around the web, instagram, watch youtube and some movies. I would be more than happy if you can give me your opinions and if you have any question do not hesitate to ask me. Also, i will make some ROOT/TWRP/ROM review videos so support is more than appreciated. Have a great day everyone!

I really think the Mi 9T is a great phone with the latest Urnyx Gcam without unlock the device. This phone takes beautiful night photos and using astrophotography setting compared to Miui's camera. It has been about 7 days that i own the Mi 9T. With certain reviews i have seen about how Miui's bloatware (and google) crippled the battery life can perform and by using this phone in real time. I think the phone can truly shine with custom rom or by using Miui EU Rom's. I have the 6GB version and this phone is running very smooth. Messenger can be hit or miss when answering, the front camera tends to not pop up at time. (So far 3-2 ratio of the camera popping up verus not) I jave not try gaming because i use my Mi Max 3 for that and also to keep the integrity of the Amoled display. As far as youtube goes, few videos take full potential of the whole display ratio and some not. When it does, the display is amazing.
That is my opinion about this phone. Tomm. i will be able to unlock and use the Xiami EU finally and can go further on what can this phone do.
For Xiomi.EU to work.. just format data and then enter "yes". If not force encryption will stay on and the phone will be rebooted back to TWRP Recovery. Also don't mount system when installing magisk.

Yeah, indeed.
I am also very curious how Roms are working and what can mods improve in terms of speed and battery. I cant say its not good but i think that this phone can do atleast a bit better in those terms. I applied for bootloader unlock 2 days ago, i will need to wait 5 more so i can unlock my phone and get my hands on rooting, installing twrp and so on. Ty for ur opinions.

Well i am going to use Xiaomi.EU first. I don't like the custom roms only because the gestures have lines appearing at the bottom and the bottom sides of the screen. Can only make the side arrow gestures dissappear only, on that note, i swtich to Xiaomi.EU for full finger gesture w/o them white lines appearing.
I would recommened Extended Ui Rom if you want to go in that direction.

Yes I would agree with your ROM choice from reading on XDA, but what about full screen gestures (I think it's called) in magisk modules? Doesn't that remove the lines at the bottom and make it MIUI like?

I have not tried any magisk modules except for YouTube Vanced Black. I found the module, i guess i can try it out once i switch to a custom Rom.
Yes, the full screen gesture works.
Can confirm i really prefer the device.
Owned couple of flagships like the oneplus 6, but i like the mi 9t a lot more. The full screen is amazing and everything just works and is fast enough... Even the battery outperforms every device i owned. The phone is a bit on the thicc side... But that isn't a bad thing.
For the price, you get more for the money.
I had one screen failure, that resulted in sending it back and received a new one after the same weekend. Suffered from "ghost touches" in the area where the statusbar sits... After a couple of days it resulted in screen failure considering the top area unusable. Now i got the new one running no problems, even the fingerprint is faster.
I have been rooting around, runned HavocOS 2.9. i really liked the rom but i preferred stock due to slightly less battery drain. The downside of rooting this device is that there is a lot of stuff scattered around xda and the rest of Internet with not the best description about for which version its made for (redmi or mi 9t) or what it modifies or does... Which resulted in flashing a stock rom that made my phone think it was a Redmi K20 instead of a Mi 9T... It did boot tho.
Now i don't do much anymore with toying and flashing around like i used to. i just use audio enhancements, certain themes and adblockers. I mainly use the phone for whatsapp, youtube, android auto and music.

After I saw notch of OnePlus 6 I understood
Thought it was tear drop notch but more like iPhone, but still.... Pretty impressed to hear that!
Looks like good customer service too, I haven't even unlocked it, it's fine for me and will personalise more when I unlock it like to icon, nothing too major cause like you I prefer stock. Better battery life is all it take for me, if the ROM is not a trash experience of course.
For me it was manageable to navigate through the threads and see what's up.
Oh and also about the description I believe it is meant to run on both, and Dev decides it to be named K20 or Mi 9T depending on their device... I'm pretty sure if you asked them to change to your device's model name they would be more than happy to help out.

Oh and also about the description I believe it is meant to run on both, and Dev decides it to be named K20 or Mi 9T depending on their device... I'm pretty sure if you asked them to change to your device's model name they would be more than happy to help out.

The notch on the oneplus 6 was not even that bad, i liked that phone but battery life was not good enough, and i go to a lot of festivals so battery is important, and sound recording quality which also sucked.
The Mi 9T on the other hand succeeded in everything i want on a phone. Android auto works, music is good, wireless audio also, battery is very good, recording quality in both sound and video is good enough (seems cheaper devices can record more bass ).
I am not going to bother with the devs, staying stock with a few magisk mods which is enough
Btw for people trying to flash stuff on this phone, make sure to read on about encryption because it can screw you over when flashing goes wrong. And maybe use a USB OTG (or something similar) so when you soft brick your device you can still flash stuff in that way... If you're usb drive isn't encrypted
By the specs one might think that this is a great phone. Actually its the worst xiaomi phone i ever had (and i had a few). I am really disappointed by it, mainly because of the software. Many people have issues with battery drain. Mine is randomly crashing, no idea why. Sometimes it suddenly drains the battery completely within 1 hour, randomly, without any announcement. My girlfriend told me once that she tried to phone me but it woas not possible. I did not believe her first. I had no notifications about missed calls. A few weeks later i got a SMS from my mailbox service - 13 people failed to phone me.
It could be a great phone but you cannot rely on it. So it's basically useless.

I don't know if you are on stock software... But maybe try to reset or re-flash its stock firmware those problems can go away. I have no battery drain, no problems with calls either, maybe you got a faulty device like i did.
I have no problems with my device, besides returning it for screen failure once and it got replaced within a few days.

I agree, i actually miss my Note 5 Pro (6 GB version). The camera on the Mi9t has GREAT specs but it don't take too much better pics than the Note 5 (both without GCAM). Not to mention that most cameras are useless, only 2x zoom is not good enough and the other cameras are too much of a low resolution that make the pics even worse (so the cams are useless). The popup camera sound as a dream, but it isn't. It already gave problems to me (and many others) and the ONLY fix is to re flash the persist partition, where we lose DRM for Netflix. The popup also make the phone too heavy and thick for my taste. MIUI actually run smoother on the Note 5 than on the Mi9t, the community also is bigger still on the Note 5 so we have MUCH more ROMs and mods... This device has still buggy TWRP on backup and restore plus decryption error on TWRP. The amoled screen also has terrible color calibration. Oh and the fingerprint sensor is the WORSE i ever had
I'm not too happy with it. One thing i learned with the mi9t is to NEVER buy a smartphone with moving parts, either popup cameras or folding phone. It is asking for middle term problems.

That isn't a small problem, though.
Also about flashing, i see many people who brick the device for no reason
Well, had it for 2 months and sold it, and got a used Mi8 instead. I couldn't stand fingerprint scanner which is really not so good, and battery life was ok but not good enough for a 4000mAh capacity. Even with debloating, dark mode etc. there was always some drainage. Mi8 is a lot more optimized in my opinion.
Recently I dropped my Mi8 and broke the screen, and decided to skip Xiaomi for the time being due to Miui 11, which looks nice but it's animations are overkill, and they are really annoying.
Got Huawei Nova 5t instead (although I hate Huawei), but it's the one of very few devices that still has physical fps scanner, and can easily get up to 10 hrs of sot.

Good choice. Sadly, perfect device doesn't exist. I would prefer Samsung with snapdragon (in my opinion OneUI is the best skin right now), but they are too expensive. I've been checking out the new S10 Lite, seems good, probably fps sensor is cr*p as in all Sammy phones, but who knows...
The only two downsides I can think of is camera crashing in pro mode and screen which got scratched with a fingernail
What can I say about this device is that I have some mixed feelings about it... The phone it's amazingly fast, I can do anything in a few seconds, but I have a big drain on the battery... I tried every ROM possible, any battery tips, nothing seems to help me, I can barely get 4h SOT with mi band 4 constantly connected, wifi/mobile data always on, location on... Other people are getting 7-8h SOT and I can't get more than 4h SOT... I'm somehow disappointed at this chapter but I really enjoy the smoothness of this phone, the amazing photos taken by the gcam, and the support of the community. Overall it's a great phone but a great downside it's the battery life if you put the phone at work

Yeah, unfortunately yes, and they're not doing something about this... ?

Questions before buying this phone.

So I was going to buy this phone today. I recently had to sell my iPhone X and I think this phone is good but I have a worry about bloat/software updates and performance. i was going to buy oneplus 7t but it seems like I can't find it in my country
can I just install stock android on this and call it a day? I'm worried it'll still lag and stutter cause I know the stock one is a little stuttery (My step-sister has one!) . I can afford the pro too but this is much cheaper and I never play games on my phones. I just care about UI performance and stability.
Is it still easy to install custom roms on phones thesedays? I remember back when I had an htc sensation it was really really easy to install roms etc.
anyone who can give me thoughts here! I also had my eye on the Galazy s10e but it's really small ;-;
do i need to pay attention to anything like the country and model etc?
They say when you use iPhone you never go back, what happened?
Flashing is almost the same as before except you have to unlock bootloader - easy as plug usb and click a few buttons.
You know it all depends on apps that you have? For me 9t is perfect smooth, but I don't use all crappy apps like - fb, toktok, insta, etc.
As for security - if you don't install weird apps and don't open shady websites, you are safe.
It refers to every device with internet access, so don't think iPhone is special (it has flaws like every OS)
The stock rom in Miui 11 Pie have some stutters when reading fingerprint on Always on Display, on recent apps on the stock launcher with full screen gestures and some on the dialer and some on the youtube app on the title of the video... Apart from those things, it's buttery smooth.
Talking about bloat, this is what it comes with (See screenshots).
I haven't tested roms yet but there's Pixel Experience, Paranoid Android.
I'm still on stock and waiting for Android 10, Xiaomi isn't known for updating Android versions but they update their interface even on older phones.
So it's stock bloat, use Xiaomi adb fastboot tool and stick to what you can remove.
I recommend Nova launcher and YouTube vanced.
As for ROM I used lineage for quite some time, but not yet on 9t - I was always very impressed by how fast it could be compared to stock.
You have to read what are bugs and what it could do as many ROMs have different functionality
Well, i use mi9t since 1 month and I can definitely recommend this phone. Just removed few of stock apps and used my preferred magisk modules on Xiaomi.eu, the experience is great. I am playing few games, not the most demanding ones, but there is completely nothing I could complain about even using high settings. The UI experience is flawless for me, 0 frame drops and smoothness in every animation (but I am not using Facebook app and similar trash), I am definitely beyond satisfied. Even so considering great battery, great display, good camera and low price. Fingerprint is better than enough for me after adding second scan of the same finger. Definitely recommend to at least try this phone!
How to improve battery in xiaomi.eu, android system is draining too much

I was gonna go and buy that but i saw the note 10 and I fell in love! so I actually bought that. still can't believe i spent so much money on a phone!
it's very smooth and i don't see a need for rooting or custom roms yet my original plan after your comments were to get a xiaomi and put pixel experiance on it!
Had samsungs, but now they only have curved edges for s and note, its very annoying and edges only looks nice, but are totally impractical

I think you will be more happy importing the OnePlus phone
Mi 9t is amazing phone. Iphone is amazing but battery life I think is better for mi9t or one plus 7t. Iphone software is suited for people that don't want customizations. The reason I don't like Iphones is design-notch is ugly and back camera arangement is ugly. But Iphones have fastest procesors in all smartphones and less issues with laging, crashing. Just dont buy old iphones. I am happy with mi9t, but iphone 11 pro or 11 pro max is much better but the price is a lot higher
