[Discussion] T-MOBILE OP8 Update to 10.5.17/20. Signal Service loss.. - OnePlus 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Looks like T-MOBILE OP8 got an update today (8/25)...
Interesting that it's asking the user to "backup data".
Curious, since taking this update, has anyone experienced signal issues? Data loss, cell service loss ECT?

Are you rooted? Mine shows up to date and I'm on 10.5.10. Might have to use MSM tool and then update and root afterwards unless someone can get the full firmware link.

Mine is rooted as well and is on 10.5.10.IN55CB. No updates. Maybe I have to uninstall Magisk to see if the updates show up!

Updated my device with no issues. Still don't have the utility to update my OnePlus buds though.

I just flashed the global rom the other day... Any ideas if the global will get the update to allow 5g SA at some point?

need someone to fastboot twrp before the convert

It sucks that without the 5G SA, Tmo 5G feels like 3G or 4G in some areas...
The 5G SA might be just the modem firmware so if someone can back up his 5G SA modem file and provide to us then maybe we could store it to the global rom.

Got the new update, but the 5g data signal has been acting up as well as the calls and text. Are any of you having similar issues ?

Interesting I am only getting 25-30 Mbps download on standalone and get 120 - 170 Mbps download on LTE+NR

You know out side of speed the new update made my phone calls more stable. Between Cincinnati and Dayton I continually used to get dicey connections where you could only understand every other syllable and it was always in the same spots. Today not one time did the call waver, it was solid. Was pretty impressed, hopefully it stays that way.

I'm the opposite, these are the speeds with good reception, somewhere in between Wilsonville and Aurora Oregon.

I think when the bootloader is unlocked on the T-Mobile variants you wont get the update and if you do it will fail to install. At least that's the way it was on my 6T. BUt that seemed so much more simple to convert to international so I just never worried about it.
Whats also lame is the lack of download support for the T-Mobile device. I really dont like that but as you said, MSM back to original and update from there. Thats always quick, easy and fun.

Yeah , had to do the same, I would try to make a phone call and will state no signal, with all bars full. Also ppl kept calling me and going to VM.

How do you know when you're on standalone?

I am not rooted, so I'm not sure how it works on that end. I did factory reset after taking the update. The "backup data" suggest that there might be a modem update as well. I am however still having issues with text and calls. I notice if I leave my phone on wifi my service data signal and reception show an X by it. I had to also switch to LTE or 5G to send messages. No support for wireless buds yet though. Oh well. Calls do hold stronger as some of you have mentioned so, that's a right step in the right direction?

That's to be expected. SA means you're only using 1 band of NR (usually N71). It doesn't aggregate with LTE in standalone mode, therefore speeds will be less. The benefits is that since it's only connecting to 5G, the ping will be less (my ping is around 15ms on SA while 25-30ms on NSA) and signal for NR goes further as it's not connecting to LTE.

You're speedtest are from using NSA mode (NR + LTE) not SA mode. Most of the time you'll connect to NSA instead of SA for now unless you manually lock on to SA in settings, although I don't recommend doing that if it's your main phone as you won't be able to receive or make phone calls. Generally the max on N71 SA will be around 50mbps if on 10mhz and 100mbps if on 20mhz. Also ping times will be in the teens usually 12-18ms ping times on SA.

Yeah, to get the update I ended up having to use MSM tool and then update and re-root my phone. That was fun since MSM broke fingerprint reader (although knowing it was possible I used the readback function of MSM to save my persist partition). Thankfully fastboot flashing my persist fixed my fingerprint afterwards. I really hate that t mobile version gets rid of local upgrade option, don't understand why OnePlus agreed to remove that feature for t mobile.

Sounds like you were locked on to 5G SA. I've been doing testing and when locked on to 5G SA I wouldn't receive calls, but when I tried to make calls it would drop back to NSA or LTE to do the call over voLTE without an issue. If I manually selected NR only in settings, I couldn't make or receive calls, although that's expected as there is no voNR currently (not until next year devices using the x60 modem).

Only way to know is if you manually force it in settings or use Network Signal Guru (although root is required as well as a license). Other Android apps aren't currently showing NR information. If you want to force it go in dialer and type:
Code:
*#*#4636#*#*
Then change to NR only for preferred network type. Again, I don't recommend doing so if it's your main device as in NR only mode you won't be able to make or receive calls.

Then why did TMobile lie and say it would be 20-30% faster than LTE with lower ping?

Preferred Network Type?(Verizon)

After updating to 6.0.1 and having LTE issues I noticed that my preferred network type is set to global. Is that right? I would think it should be on LTE/CDMA.
I am too. I already struggled to keep LTE before, but now, it's intermittent. Mine is set to global, which most VZW Samsung and LG phones come these days. Also i went from having 6 APNs to 2.

1 here too. Not sure about before 6.0.1.
Right now (i got 4g on my nexus 6) i am at 1X. It's weird, ill be sitting here and get 4g on my n6p then it'll drop to 3g, then back to 1X...then if i toggle AP mode, it'll go back to LTE then eventually drop back off to 3g...etc.
Same issue here. Wildly fluctuating LTE signal. -82db one minute -108 db and 3g the next. I upgraded to 6.0.1 this weekend and have had no problem till today. I've had great signal ranging from -72 db to -84db. I checked verizon outages and they seem to be having a lot of trouble today. On the map I'm not in an affected area but I'm close (down state Delaware) and the New York to Washington corridor is showing entire outages. Interesting that Comcast had trouble yesterday and today in the same areas.
Yeah I know there's a giant thread here about it with attempted fixes and such. I'll link to it at the bottom. Was worried for a second my preferred network type was wrong but guess not http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3267270
Well i decided to take a trip over to Nexus Forums and came up with this. Have not tried it yet.
"*SOLUTION
Just got off the phone with Google and they asked me to try a few things.
>take out your SIM card
>go to settings> backup and Reset
>choose Network settings Reset, and select it.
Then power off the device, power on the device and pop the SIM card back in.
I then powered the device off and on one more time with the SIM in it.. And Bingo!
My 6p is now switching from 3G(H) and LTE on its own without needed to refresh Airplane mode.
Try this and let us know of it works for you."

EDIT: I have not tried this. I haven't had time.
If you try this... let me know how it works out.
thanks.

anyone else get slow data speeds?

My service provider isnt as slow as 500kb/s but thats all i can really get. This isnt the first OnePlus phone that has been slow on mobile data. Ive tried 3 different ones to try and get better speeds but downloading always takes forever.
Is there a fix for this problem because i see folks posting how this thing gets fast speeds on certain carriers even my own. Id like to cash in on that as well. Im in a prime area and my plan never goes over my data cap because i hardly get the speeds to do it.
Can someone shed some light on this?
Try creating your own APN. Look up some options for your carrier. I'm in the USA and on T-Mobile. When I first got the OP5 I was getting like 1-5mbps at my house when my Nexus 6P was getting 30mbps or more with the same sim card. So I started playing around with different APN's and I was fine. Once on 4.5.8 I think the regular APN was working fine. But whoever you carrier is, maybe tweaking the APN is your answer.

Thanks for the suggestion, unknowing to me my phone already had 3 different default apns to select for my carrier. Only time can tell because I never know what exactly it will do at different times or how it will behave so I guess I'll keep on keeping on until maybe something breaks or it just straight up works. thanks for the suggestion.

Depending on the rom you have it could be a few things.
OOS Rom's should just be a case of creating the correct APN for your carrier.
For example EE UK, all that's needed is NAME: Internet APN: everywhere
Menu / Save / Activate
From that point it's all ready to roll.
There are some other options on other Rom's like AOSP and LOS
For example VOLTE, NV and RUSIM, Preferred Network Mode.
So long as this is all set up correctly it should be fine.
Also try the different SIM slot and make sure to remove the not used APN's
Download Ookla's Speedtest app and test your changes.
Another thing could be that you've chosen a network manually, I always set this to automatic.
PS: Further to these points i've noticed that compared to my HTC 10, the Oneplus is nowhere near as quick in terms of connectivity, same SIM, EE UK, max i had at home on 4G+ was 157Mb where as on My Oneplus it's around 50Mb at best, which is a 3rd of the speed, bit of a drop.
I have a thread open for this in the Q+A, I'm querying Baseband, Firmware, Kernel, i think it may have something to do with it.
If you're stock then this is not something you have to worry about.
????? Anyone ????

Verizon Essential stuck in 3G after the upgrade

Before I updated via OTA to 8.1 the Essential was connecting to LTE without issue. Since 8,1 I have to connect to CDMA and 3g in order to user my Dialer, otherwise Server Error is generated. No calls in or out.
I wanted to downgrade Yes rebooted, factory reset, etc.
I searched google up and down with no real answers that work. How do I get Sideload working again? It has to be a simple configuration or driver problem I will assume.
Thanks
Im in the same situation you are in also im on 3g at 1.50mbs up & down i have searched every where....

I wrote that post that he referred you to, and while it worked in Oreo 8.0 it does not seem to work in 8.1 for me either.
Try this:
dial *228 and get a PRL update
reboot
*#*#4636#*#* (it may take a few seconds for it to come up if you do it right after a reboot)
set it to LTE/WCDMA
reboot
(you may have to check in mobile network settings that your APN is set to VZWINTERNET)
Let me know how it works out for you. I know that Verizon doesnt support WCDMA, but it forces you over to the Verizon LTE bands which is more or less the goal of this. For some reason this functions differently than any of the other settings that include LTE in them (believe me, I've tried them).

Yep those are how the menu should look for a device that's not locked to sprint. It seems to me there are some firmware files that prefer sprint in these beta builds, because even on other carriers (and more than one person has said this) you can see 'sprint' pop up in the bar or in the settings even when you arent on sprint.
Interesting that yours gives you the option of 'wifi calling provisioned', I cant get that to not be greyed out on mine.

Yeah I've screwed with this phone so much I don't know what I did LOL but now it shows wifi calling even in dialer. I'm not sure if it really works cuz I have a good signal so it never switches. My e911 address is set up from my Moto z and I do have a wear24 watch tied to this phone not sure if that's what triggered it. ? I did get a new SIM card on Monday as well because I was fighting with the vzw crap so I don't know exactly what triggered the WiFi calling.

That's where I'm at too... the one thing that might be different about this is I tried my old steps first before figuring out how to get it to work with these new ones... seems like a lot of effort, but it might be what is needed (or some amount of it) to get it all working. So try going through the old ones before the new ones (you probably dont need to *228 again since you just did)
My old steps linked here (these worked in 8.0, if they work for you in 8.1, more power to you, but they dont work for me):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74920423&postcount=506
I'm still routinely messing with it because I feel like the setting I have now prevents me from falling back to CDMA if LTE is unavailable for some reason. Fortunately that is a rarity for me... but I maintain that Essential has something in the ROM itself that is preferring sprint and I think it's screwing with us using Verizon.

If I go into the menu and play around it will try to connect to sprint even with a Verizon SIM. Go figure?

I just reported this to Essential in their beta feedback.
Others should report their similar issues.
It seems to be associated with them making a unified release.
If you look at some releases they are specifically for Sprint or Not.

Try turning off Enchanted 4G LTE Mode. It's possible going to 8.1 just reset this setting to on. This should only be on if you have HD Voice enabled on your line on Verizon (you'll have to call Verizon to enable it, it's a free feature).
This should fix server error on 4G, randomly connecting to Sprint is a separate issue.
UPDATE Now working
Took the advice from someone on Reddit who had the same problem. Ran to VZW store and received a new SIM. Without any programming on my end or reboot, back to LTE without issue. FINALLY. As soon as the rep popped in the SIM the essential connected on its own.

Just wanted to second this post that a new sim card is the key to solving this issue. In my case, I was using Red Pocket CDMA (VZW network), and I ran into the same problem. Red Pocket rep explained to me that my sim got provisioned to 3g only and that I needed a new sim to connect to LTE. As soon as we switched to a new sim, I got LTE. I hope this helps others.

loss of LTE

So i have been running pie beta for months. With the official release update, i lost all LTE. I have wiped, rewiped, reinstalled every way i can figure. Even downgraded back to oreo and allowed it to ota to pie. Nothing will fix this. Its just when i make calls. I have LTE for text, and web. When i dial a call it reverts to 3g, H+, or just doesnt call, it fails. This is on stock or custom or gsi. Any suggestions would be awesome. I literally have to swap my sim to another phone to make calls. Short of calling essential, i am so frustrated and dont know what to do. Any ideas? Anyone?

So i have been running pie beta for months. With the official release update, i lost all LTE. I have wiped, rewiped, reinstalled every way i can figure. Even downgraded back to oreo and allowed it to ota to pie. Nothing will fix this. Its just when i make calls. I have LTE for text, and web. When i dial a call it reverts to 3g, H+, or just doesnt call, it fails. This is on stock or custom or gsi. Any suggestions would be awesome. I literally have to swap my sim to another phone to make calls. Short of calling essential, i am so frustrated and dont know what to do. Any ideas? Anyone?

What you have going on there... Is a lack of VoLTE.. I have the same behavior on AT&T...
Afaik... It's a carrier thing... My guess is your carrier doesn't know what device you have... Or forgot... Or some identifier changed...
Called t mobile. Said im good on their end. Suggested may be band related...i tried everything.. Anyone got a number for essential?

Do you have a friend on another carrier?
I am not convinced it's not T-Mobiles fault... Try switching to an AT&T sim if you can get one... I'll bet the farm it's on TMOs end

I found what the issue was. It was the ims apk Missing from /vendor/app.. and flashing stock didn't replace it bc I didn't specifically erase vendor beforehand. I bet a gsi screwed it up..I was sure it was the mobile too

OnePlus 8 Pro & 5G Support in Canada

Hi All,
For those Canadians using either the OP8 or OP8 Pro, are you getting 5G with your carriers? I see that all the big three (Rogers/Bell/Telus) have launched 5G networks in various cities across Canada. I'm with Telus using the OP 8 Pro in Vancouver but cannot seem to get 5G downtown. According to Telus' map, I should have 5G coverage but the phone only shows 4G.
What variant of the OP8 do you own?, the only ones that work with North American 5G are the IN2015 and IN2025,
IN2020, 2021, and2023
and
IN2010, 2015, and 2013
All lack NA 5G bands

I've got the NA (IN2025) version which has B66 - Telus' 5G is deployed on that band.

It may not have the ENDCs for Telus n66, submit a bug report on OnePlus community and maybe they can add support in a future update:
https://forums.oneplus.com/feedback/?node_id=230
It also may just not be enabled in the band combos, follow this guide to see if you need to add them:
https://mt-tech.fi/en/modify-oneplus-7-pro-5g-8-and-8-pro-nr-lte-a-band-combos/
I'm in Surrey, close to Vancouver but I don't think close enough to be around 5G towers. Maybe I'll make a drive downtown to test but my bigger issue is trying to get VoWiFi to work with Telus!

^^^This worked for me. I now have 5G enabled although the speeds are pretty bad!

Done. I have logged a bug report! It still sucks that 5G is not enabled out of the box. No 5G support out of the box, no dual SIM support for IN2025 model even now- I can understand the frustrations with the device.

Great, just so you know with that process if you remove your sim card you will have to redo it apparently.

Yeah that works. Or at least I think it does - I see an HD icon during some calls and I believe that's the indicator it's working.

You'll know if volte works if you get simultaneous voice and data, it'll also show a VoLTE icon in the status bar.
You can also try to force that on with this app:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/onepl...ase/onepluslogkit-1-0-2-android-apk-download/
Install it, dial *#800#, enter logkit, Function Switch, tick volte and vowifi and then reboot.

I don't get any status bar icon but that may be because I have it turned off in settings.
I did go into the logkit (had to install the OnePlus 7 Pro version to see the settings) to turn on both VoWiFi and VoLTE.
On my previous Pixel device, I would see an icon saying "HD" next to the call duration and I see the same thing on this phone, which leads me to believe it is working. I can also tell by the call quality as well. I haven't noticed if I have simultaneous voice and data but I'll check that the next call I'm on.
As for VoWiFi, I think the function switch settings just show the toggles in settings but it doesn't do anything. Just ends up being a dummy switch.
I called Telus to activate/register the device IMS and the first rep had no idea what I was talking about. Second rep gave an indirect answer by saying "everything is fine on our end so your device may just be incompatible".
Strange because I called to register my Pixel's IMS and VoWiFi and VoLTE immediately worked afterwards. Maybe I just got lucky with a more knowledgeable rep back then.
I'm going to try and reach out to live chat support to see if they can provide any more answers because it would be nice to have both features working rather than just the one.
Hey, I have been unable to get it to work for me, I must have some mistake in my carrier policy edit. Would you be able to send me a copy of yours so I can compare?

Hey, I've attached the file here. Note that if you update to a newer version of the firmware or remove the SIM, the file will revert to the original and you will have to do this over again.

I had to do the same but I also had to run QPST and change the profile to get it to work. I used to get the VOLTE icon but after the last firmware update, it seems to have disappeared. But I still get the HD icon when on calls, so I assume it is still working.
I'm kind of disappointed with OnePlus here - no VOLTE, 5G or dual-SIM working out of the box, even after three months of owning the device. For a US$1000 phone, this is pretty unacceptable. And having to muck around in the settings to get VoLTE or 5G working (and doing this on every firmware update) is not something I want to keep doing.

And OnePlus says it's your carrier and your carrier says it's OnePlus Lol. I hate being thrown back and forth between the two just because no one wants to take on the burden/responsibility to get these features working.

I think for VoLTE and 5G, all of the responsibility lies on OnePlus. The fact that these can be (temporarily)enabled manually after mucking around in the config files clearly points to OnePlus needing to do work to support this. Why advertise 5G and then create a blacklist for it?

It's an XML file, so the browser tries to process it and displays an error. If you right click on it and save it on your desktop, the file will get downloaded.
If you can't get it to work, I'll upload it as a text file.

Thanks for sharing! Will test it tonight and hopefully get 5G to work.
To your knowledge, will this get VoLTE also?
Bell is continuing to restrict 5g unless it is a phone they have sold
