So i noticed that when you are in a dark room and you set the brightness to the lowest (0%-20%), some dark black colors of buttons and graphics becomes Red.
You can easily see this in the setting menu honestly at lowest brightness.
Changing display color presets does change it in vivid, natural etc.
What does help is going to oneplus laboratory at bottom of settings and enabling DC dimming.
It fixes the problem but also make the gamma very very low so a lot of the objects are too dark and kinda shaded with some extra shadow.
Is my screen faulty? Any other display settings or tuning i can do?
Does this oled panel have too much technology in it up to a failt? (120hz, QHD and 1Billion colors)

Yes these are the first attemots on 120 hz/qhd panels..
Are a bit problematic.
I believe next year they are coming better panels..on next oneplus device(OP9)

I read tons of reviews for a month before buying, non of them mention this issue.

I also have same problem.
Had same issue returned mine
Try turning off true tone and see
If you've got eye comfort turned on then this is normal..turn if off and it should go back to black.

I noticed that when I turn my brightness down my phone gets a purplish tint but it goes away as the brightness goes up. Is this because its special type of LED screen or the over saturation of colors?

Normal for AMOLED screens. They tend to get a red tinge to them when they dim down.

I see it as well. A little annoying, but not a giant problem. The blazing speed of the phone kinda makes up for it.

I did notice this as well. Some of the red pixels on the edges of text seemed to have drifted a little too far from the body of the glyph. I actually thought the same thing as this poster - sounds like they need to tweak their "subpixel LCD text" algorithms to match the different layout of the OLED screen.
I'd add to his analysis that subpixel LCD text algorithms typicall employee adjustments for the non-linear response of the pixels (steps of brightness near the dim end of the scale are not the same perceived size as steps of brightness near the bright end of the scale) and OLED may not only have different non-linear response, but it may have different response in each of its R, G, and B pixel elements...
This all should be tweakable in software and is bound to be improved as OLED screens gain popularity.

I have the JDI (Novatek) and confirm the same crushed black levels with Color Test and Display Tester - except that only 7 and above are distinguishable. White contrast and brightness are the same as yours, but color saturation tests vary between the two apps .... personally I trust Display Tester better, which shows blues only are moderately over-saturated.
The crushed blacks are definitely noticeable in dark scenes with or without X-Reality. The panel is quite warm compared to others, and the White Balance settings are somewhat useless since they involve an overlay filter, it seems, and so just darken the screen.

Yeah not too happy with the white balance setting compared to voodoo/cm colour settings on my old galaxy s, but gets the job done for the most part. Call me crazy but I like it even warmer than default
And hopefully there will be some software improvements to the display in Kitkat

AUO Panel here. Results are pretty much similar in mine.
Color Scale - Saturation: The last 4 squares on the right end are clearly distinguishable for all except yellow and bluish green. Just about distinguishable for the green line.
On an unrelated note, I noticed that the INDOOR brightness level on the AUO panel is getting decreased by at least 4 levels on a scale of 100, when I put the slider to the lowest end and checked 'Adapt to lighting conditions'. You can see the difference very clearly by checking and unchecking the 'adapt to light' check box. Might save some battery during indoor use or ebook reading.
I haven't received the z3c yet but wanted to start theis thread early so everyone can post what display setting there using and any issue on the display. This is from the phone areana review.

Sony has gone purposefully with a colder, noticeably bluish display with color temperature reaching the whopping 10000K (while 6500K is the reference value, and everything above it is cold). Color balance in greyscale is noticeably skewed towards the blue across all brightness levels. Color purists have the option to adjust color balance with separate controls for red, green, and blue. With some fiddling (you’d need to add in a lot more red, and a bit more green to get to more balanced colors,*we tweaked it to the following values: red ~ 250, green ~ 190, blue ~ 0), you can get to the point where colors are not outrageously blue, but getting this right is no trivial task and requires either a trained eye, or a colorimeter."

It's great that we have white balance settings, but the only thing I don't like about it is that it decreases screen brightness when applied.
for me its Red 40, Green 75 and Blue 0
If anyone has a colorimeter at hand it would be greatly received if they could perform some tests and provide the optimum RGB values.

No - I'm no color purist, but the extreme blue tint was very obvious and off-putting. Very puzzling choice on Sony's part, it makes the screen look really bad.
I turned off X-Reality and put it side-by-side with my Moto G and adjusted the sliders until it more or less matched my Moto G. I'm still fiddling with it, but right now I have it set to Red 120, Green 145, Blue 0.
Doesn't the display get significantly darker when using high values for white balance?
Leaving XReality on - I like R:20, G:20, B:0. Just warms things up a tad without overdoing it.
So is everyone experiencing the same blueish tint?

A little bit, I guess? It's still more than readable for me in sunlight, and I'm using Red 120 + Green 145.
I've been using Red 40 + Green 73. No "Image Enhancements"... my reality is enhanced enough, thank you. It does *appear* dimmer, but I'm going to assume that's a physiological color perception issue. You can increase the brightness of the display while keeping the ambient light sensor on, which is a nice feature. Also, the screen can still get blisteringly, stupidly bright if you disable the sensor and crank it all the way up, even with those settings.
I have a colorimeter, and I know that the diagnostics menu lets you do a series of display tests (including flipping to red/green/blue). Does anybody know if those panels apply your color balance settings? Or, alternatively, a good (preferably free) Android app to help with calibration?
Also, seriously, WTF Sony. The displays look almost comically bad straight out of the box. I feel bad for every user who buys the phone and never delves into these settings. :|

As far as I'm aware, the reason why Sony's white balance option makes the screen appear dimmer is because it's not really a true white balance option, but rather a sort of workaround where it adds a coloured transparent overlay to the screen. Higher values mean that the overlay becomes less transparent so the colour overlay will appear more intense while making the screen appear dimmer consequently. There are third party white balance apps in the Play Store which have exactly the same effect, although those also add a bit of lagginess to everything. But the colour and dimming effect is the same.

Huh. I mean, I use Twilight (basically the Android version of f.lux) on my Nexus 5, and have never noticed lag issues. It is *definitely* an overlay, though. That's very surprising that Sony would use such a method, as they actually have access to the actual firmware. You would think, as such, that it would allow you to use ICC color profiles.

Ah, no, I meant apps to correct the white balance, not colour measuring apps. I used to try one of such apps on my old xperia tablet s because its display had a noticeable yellow hue. It did make the colours better, albeit a little dimmer, but everything seemed to be laggy/choppy when the effect was applied.
Oddly, according to my Spyder4, good settings are R:0, G: 137, B: 255.
I'm not convinced...

Well, the screen is said to be blueish and you're adding extra blue so of course that's not the way to fix it.

No because it's a matter of personal taste. I tend to not use adaptive cause the colors are too saturated. AMOLED Cinema is the more pleasing one to me on this phone in particular
I really wish I could adjust the whites on basic or decrease the saturation on adaptive. Any ideas?

You can adjust whites on adaptive with the rgb color balance slider. I turned the white point temperature right down to 6800k. The default is around 7500 I think.

Sure, but adaptive is too saturated for my taste. I'm sticking with basic for now, but the white is quite reddish. I'm not exchanging this again as it takes over 2 weeks :c

Did you try going into the advanced setting and lowering the red with the slider?
Edit: never mind, read your comment too fast and thought you were talking about adaptive being too red.

In terms of brightness I would say it's average at best. The screen is very dim my current brightness slider is set at 80% and that is just to navigate conformabley. But I would recommend a 85 to 90% settings.
The screen isn't yellowish quite the opposite actually in comparison with my 1st generation ROG, colors are even I would say and no grain.

Hopefully it's just a software issue and will be resolved shortly. Hell, it couldn't be worse than the OP6T. And the ROG2 has around 200 nits more than the 6T. That fukn thing, you can't see **** on if its bright out. Overall, I would think the extra 2,000 mah would compensate for the higher brightness til its fixed.

With 6000mah you have nothing to worry about. Reduce the refresh rate to 60 and you will get time over or equal to 10 hours standby time.
Regarding the razor phone I would think it would be much brighter because it's an LCD panel. But I am not definitive.

just got my tencent version today. the screen max and min brightness is slightly higher than my oneplus 5. uneven colour/graininess requires you to squint with your face almost stuck to the screen so its really a nonissue. white balance is pretty on point and actually a little on the cool side tho whites are almost perfect white

You can also adjust color temperature and saturation in display settings. I think this screen is awesome.

Umm everything I said is praise.
I did notice that graininess and very slight yellow shifting occurs at near minimum brightness but its really not easy to spot
Other than that the experience has been pretty amazing

The screen is excellent in my opinion, and while the maximum brightness isn't the brightest out there, it's perfectly adequate even in direct sunlight.
As far as low brightness goes, I felt like the lowest brightness was still a little too bright next to my wife in bed so I installed low brightness pro. If anyone else feels they want to go lower..
Got the phone. Definitely too bright at lowest so either use an app to add dark overlay to dim or wait for a software update I guess

Yes it does have a red tint on dark grey colors. Visible everywhere in apps using dark theme based on grey like google apps dark mode, the rog ui itself and any dark grey on screen.
Effect is more pronounced while using 120hz. And less on other modes.

Same here, got the tencent version. Lets hope its just a software issue that future update can fix it. Im coming from s9 plus so its hard to compare the beauty of the screen.
Minimum brightness is way too high. Reference compared to nexus 5x and galaxy s7 on lowest setting. It's blinding
Rog 2 is brighter than the sun
I have a great appreciate of the capabilities of this phone, no matter what you might hear this phone has superb color rendering and there is no beating the refresh rate. When it comes to comparing how it delivers in color saturation compared to its competition all you are doing is splitting hairs... But as for its minimum brightness, well you cannot appreciate how truly bright the panel is until you are trying to write a blog post when the lights are off and your partner is asleep next to you.
With the slider all the way down its impossible to look at the screen without squinting real hard because those whites burn through your retinas and imprint on your soul. Do you like watching Netflix on your phone in bed? Not on this phone you won't. Want to read that last Facebook alert you just got after you turned the lights out? Absolutely you can do it... If you like staring at the sun that is. I sincerely hope Asus can do some sort of work around and deliver less power to the display in total darkness because light induced migrains are not fun.
Otherwise pretty good phone.
