What we've been missing all along. - Android Head-Units

OK, not my favorite car in the world. But my mate showed off his new (to him) Volvo XC90 about 4-5 yrs old.
We sat in it for about two hours working out all the knobs n whistles and then we found the phone section.
Not only could we pair his phone, I then did mine. Plus it has option for about ten more - at the same time
Samsung S6 and Samsung S9, so nothing too special. But the realy cool thing, and I mean REALY COOL, and something I've been crying out for for ages for my humble px5 head unit, was at the click of a touch screen not only could you see recent callers, but also recent messages. This is where I would put the well n truly shocked icon !
No google crap, nag screens, warnings of the apocolypse or anything. Jjust a simple clear list of readable recent messages.
Not only that but at a simple touch of any message it was read out. No fuss or bother, no mods, plugins or crashes or freezes.
It just worked.
So why have we let google literally kick our asses for so long. Sob.

Hi, that might be because your PX5 is not Android auto but is a hacked chinese android.

Android auto is an general overall head group of sub groups of posts of specific catagories including the google os Android auto.
But before you move it, how about you show me show me a dedicated (android auto) head unit I can buy, that fits my car.
Mercedes w203. That runs 'Android auto' and doesn't have a ton of usless junk like play store, tracking, feedback, Adverts, usage logs, heart monitor, nag screens, privacy notices and works flawlessly as my post above describes. Whoose system IS also a android 'hacked' based system. And I wont care who makes it.
PLEASE - I will buy it.

You're still confusing android auto with cheap Chinese headunits running modified versions of Android 6-10 - they are very different.
Android auto units basically mirror your phone display to the vehicle Android auto headunit display.
Official / REAL Android Auto units, without the 'junk' you describe are listed here: https://www.android.com/auto/
Since you're still not alive to the differences and comparing your PX5 hacked Chinese android headunit to an unknown type unit, mods moved your post to the appropriate android headunits sub-forum.
Suggest learning the basics and differences and then ask questions.

I would say also, that head units supporting AA are not sold separately, but they only come mounted in new cars, as part of the infotainment system. They do not have and it is not possible to install apps on them, they only become alive when connected to a mobile phone (which will be then the brains of the system).
As marchnz said, they only mirror your phone's screen.
You are talking about independent head units supporting Android operating system (which do not need AA because they are already being able to download and run appps from Play store) , and that is something else.
Sent from my SM-N975F using Tapatalk

Not quite.
I know what android auto is.
I also agree some manufatures use android as alternative to win ce to build their quality radios like Pioneer.
This is different and why I posted. Please don't assume its an either or and that I'm an idiot for mentioning it.
Volvo have used Googles android as an os without the crap 'spyware apps' and intergration to develop their OWN system. called sensus
It does not mirror a phone and run apps from it.
Although the new version does have AA and much more google integration unfortunately.
It does not require a phone to work. It has its own built in for data if need be. But also runs off line.
Its an independent system that can link to multiple paired phones for messaging and calls.
Their are no agreements and nag screen pop ups every two minutes from google. All its functions are running at once and all work together. So easy to flick from one to the other without it crashing.
Its a great system and showcases what can be done and the potential of just android as an os without googles presence and interference.

Looking for a headunit

Since i got a new/old car and i am not too happy with its radio right now I would like to exchange it and get an android device.
Actually right now I am a bit torn between an android unit and a pc. I know the pc is more expensive but as I read around the internet, right now it has the following advantages for me:
1. I can choose freely which hardware it has.
2. Bluetooth works fine.
3. It will support Windows 10 so i can use cortana - which will give me the option to use it more or less hands free.
4. I can use Kodi for Radio etc.
5. it might just run android as well
6. pretty much all apps are more or less available
7. with Kodi i can customize the look (in my opinion way beyond of what i could do with different launchers)
8. Kodi supports radio traffic service
Now that I have listed all the + Notes on the PC version here comes Android:
1. A lot cheaper!
2. Works out of the box.
3. I don't have to buy the apps again (as i have bought them already and use them on my phone)
4. Theoretically I can use Kodi (afaik "just" not for radio)
5. Afaik bigger community
BUT(!)
I was digging around and found following problems which i'd like to ask you guys if they are still an issue:
1.) So far no Android 6.... so no Google Voice for hands free
2.) Bluetooth is at best buggy (incomeing calls show no name from the phonebook just the number) other devices such as obd do not work or if they work only the ones from the manufacturer of the headunit will work. Bluetooth connectivity is limited to one device at a time.
3.) I am limited to the Apps from the manufacturer as far as radio goes. (i think most of the apps i have seen are ugly - i don't want to see the frequency of the station I am listening to... especially not as big as i have seen it.) DAB(+) Apps look somewhat ugly as well. There is no real chance to change that.
4.) there is no support for radio traffic service
5.) Customization is limited
My questions are:
1.) Is what I am saying still correct (for example the bluetooth issues).
2.) Does anyone know a work around for the Google Voice? Preferably without the need to press a button. Or has someone an Android 6 device and can confirm that Ok Google works fine there?
3.) Is it at all possible to implement the Radio(FM/DAB+) into Kodi on Android - has someone done this? Maybe even something like a navigation software? (yes - i am a kodi fanboy -actually more or less from day one - i had a old xbox - the first xbox running xbmc in my car with linux and a gps built in)
What I would like to have in the end would be a system where Kodi is loaded up as soon as the car starts.
Via Tasker (if possible) I would grab the infos from torque and implement them in a custom skin in kodi. I would love to listen to the radio via Kodi and if at all possible have navigation in there as well (but if that does not work I will find a workaround - i already have one in my head)
I know this is a lot and many of you might think tl;dr but if anyone could answer my questions anywhere I am convinced that it is here on the mighty xda board.
Thank you guys so much. (If I get this all to work I will of course post all of it here (skins, tasker skripts etc)
About Android vs Windows and head unit vs PC, I think you'll have to decide on that for yourself. Nobody here can tell you what's the right choice for you.
As for Kodi, I haven't dived into it much, but I have a more typical use of the head unit I guess. Google voice works in 5.1.1, but you need another launcher and you need to install the required apps from Google Play and enable everything. I have it working in mine, but decided to have it activate on a button press. I do have to switch between apps and stuff, and the BT caller app is a little quirky to use. I would've wanted something more inline with the default Google dialer, but no go on that one. Even if you install Contacts and the Google Phone app, they don't really do anything. If you want complete control over everything, then PC and Windows (or <insert OS her>) would be the best choice for you. If you want to save time and have something that is fairly easy and quick to set up out of the box, then a head unit with Android would be better.
Thx Hilari0 for your answer.
May I ask what Unit you have. What are the pitfalls? How did you manage to solve or work around the Bluetooth problems (i saw that joying for example released an update - can anyone tell me if that fixes the bluetooth problems?)
Is it more complicated than on other devices to install another launcher?
Thank you!
I have the Joying Intel 2GB/32GB head unit, the 135 variant. The bluetooth on it worked well out of the box with the update installed, but it was vastly improved following the instructions in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...elopment/bluetooth-settings-launcher-t3504526

Online Radio app specifically designed for android head units

We have developed an online radio app specifically for android head units, becasue the fm radio of the china devices are mostly utter crap.
We extend the country and station list continuously, but if you want us to add a specific country and/or your favorite station, drop us an email.
You find the app here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.threedmagic.carradio
UPDATE:
We updated the app.
Beside many small bugfixes we added RDS/Playing Now display, which means, you will see the actually played song's artist and title and any data the station is sending with the stream.
Available only where the station actually provide the data!
Is it possible to chance the app so it can use the FM antenna from the car instead of online data
It is impossible to create an offline radio for Android without hacking the OS!
All apps on the Play Store that claim to be offline FM radios, are scam!

Thank you.
We will look at it and test it.
We spent weeks for trying to figure out, how to create an FM radio app with the current Joying systems and current tuner chips and it wasn't possible.
At least not without a huge amount of reverse engineering and hacking and we decided that it is not worth to create an app that can be used only with a few devices and which can break with a single update of the OS or part of it.
Maybe we missed something.
If we can figure it out based on this app, we will think about making it offline as well.

Yeah, I tried both of those apps now and none of them worked.
That NavRadio+ works with one specific firmware based on the developer's explanation, which seems to be a very old firmware used by a handful of unknown radio manufacturers and not used by the biggest producer of Android Head Units called Joying.
It doesn't even open on a Joying device.
The other one is simply a piece of crap that opens, but can't do anything.

I have a SC9853I Octa Core processor in my device, but the processor has nothing to do with anything.
The Radio Tuner chip is what it is about.
The newest radios have the chip TEF6686 and the older ones have the TDA7786.
There is no way to control the radio chip. Period.
I had a dozen Android Radios before this.
You don't even get my actual radio anymore, because the market develops so fast.
The old devices are sold and nobody cares for them anymore and exactly this is the point.
You would need to hack the OS for every generation of every manufacturer separately.
Nobody will do the work even if it is possible somehow, until Google creates an API or a plugin or whatever.
How to know what radio chip that is inside ones head unit ?

All these units have the TEF6686 or the TDA7786 radio chip (i.e. my Xtrons has the TEF6686). The radio chip is controlled by the MCU that interface the Radio android app. To develop an Off Line Radio app, you need to know which informations/commands are exchanged between the MCU and the Android app, if you don't have this knowledge, you will never be able to develop an off line radio app. Period!
In this forum, several user has this ability and developed lot of alternative off line radios. This is confirmed by the huge number of people here using these app on their units.
There's no room for language and any kind of disrespect in discussions on XDA. You can disagree and still be civil. :good:

Hello. I have been using your app for a few days now and it is great. Great work!
I just have a question and a suggestion.
Question: Would it be possible to make your app launch automatically and play in the background when I turn my key, like the stock offline radio app does? This seems fairly easy and I'm sure there must be a way, I am probably missing something...
Suggestion: Would it be at all possible to make a way for users to add their own stations, without the need to bother you? I don't mean add them to everyone, just add them to my own head unit.

I am glad that you like the app.
The app starts automatically when the head unit starts if you didn't close the app manually before. You need to check the settings in your device.
Adding stations only for yourself was something we were thinking about, but we skipped the idea.
Please bother us with station requests.
We have a long queue right now, but we are working on it intensively, so it shouldn't take too long to get your stations.
If you write an email to us, you will get the stations even faster.

Why do you add stations manually (on request)?
You could get stations from here:

There is also an API for app integration

HengCheng PRO s9

Hello,
I recently purchased this unit:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001723766214.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.52f54c4dcVJLhn
The install was a little difficult but went okay. For some reason when I try to login to login to google playstore it automatically closes. I have tried allowing app permissions and clearing storage and cache. It says it is running Android 10 API 29 (qp1a.190711.l020). It has carlink installed but does not seem to recognize my phone. I have managed to get the Bluetooth working, but I guess I should have done more research and gotten a unit that other people have. Do I risk bricking the device if I try to flash another version of android onto it? I like the DSP and some of the features but I can't even log in to google. Also could someone tell me if this is MTCD or the other? The company is responding to my questions so far but it was really late in China when I told them I can't log in to google, so hopefully they message me with a fix tomorrow. There seems to be 4 instances of an app called "Launcher 3" and an app called "App store" that says it could ruin my device if I try to uninstall so I just disabled it. This thing seemed to have all the features on paper, 8 cores, 128gb ram, 4gb rom, DSP, dash cam, rear view cam, optical audio out, 4g antenna, external sim card, gps antenna, 5 g capability... you name it. They "accidentally" sent me the 64 gb version instead of 128gb but they sent me a free dash cam and tpms to make up for the mistake (which they denied at first). If anyone knows why google would be doing this and a fix please let me know. Big let down for 450 bucks.
Please post a picture of the system about screen for your unit, that would help determine if it is MTCD/E. You should be able to find such a screen in the settings.
You're pretty lucky that they're responding to your inquiries. There is a chance that your head unit is not running Android 10 and may be fake in many regards (e.g. running much earlier version and "claiming" to be Android 10)).

Thank you for the quick response. Yeah, at least they are responding. If you click the add it looks so legit with the 8 core 64 gb 4 gb ram. But my home screen looks nothing like what they advertise.View attachment Home screen.webp
Please scroll the view up on the about screen and take another picture. It is hard to see with what looks like plastic film on the screen. Would like to see the MCU version and perhaps additional information. Thank you for posting the first picture.
Oh and my pleasure to try to help you. We need to determine for sure what the head unit is and if it's MTCD/E I along with others here in the forums would be glad to try to answer your questions and help you resolve the issues you're having.
Sorry it's super bright out. Here ya go.
The only units I could find that use that particular CPU (UIS7862) are Joying branded head units. Their units are not MTCD/E. That being said, this thread probably should be moved to Android Head Units as the discussion in that forum are for non MTCx head units.
I will offer you this suggestion regarding the Google login issue, try opening the YouTube app or Google search app and try logging in from one of those. Alternatively locate the Accounts section in the settings and see if you can login to Google from there. That may help with the Google Play launching issue. If you can get GP to launch then you will be able to get Play Services updated and other applicable updates to make the Google apps/ecosystem work.
Once you get Google Play working, I would suggest installing an app like CPU-Z to see what your system consists of.
One more thing, welcome to the XDA community.

For sure, I have heard the Joying are decent. I haven't been able to get it to interface with my phone other than viewing it as files. I cant do the mirror screen split screen that is advertised in the AliExpress ad. I tried to download Zlink apk and install it (disabled third party app restriction) and it said not installed. Maybe I need an older version than 4.0.6? Unfortunately none of your tips worked, even the google one, but thank you so much for taking the time to assist me. Hopefully the seller has a fix for this, as I am not great with android.
Requested via report to move to Android Head units forum.
Sorry that my suggestions did not work for you. I have asked the forum moderators to move this thread to the Android Head units forum where maybe someone in that forum maybe has experience with the same or similar head units as yours. Suggest searching the forums here as I'm confident that somebody has solved the Google login problems you are experiencing.
Your head unit should just work out of the box. I would not recommend updating firmware or such major changes before getting your unit working at a minimum as you expect. Thing with that is how will you know if additional problems that you might encounter are from the update vs what you have now?

Already done same before. Thank you.
By selecting one of the variants of launcher as the default launcher app you should be able to get the user interface to look as shown on the ad where you bought the unit. Since these devices are sold under many brand names, they often include many different launchers which is what provides the user experience seen when the system boots up.
You should find a default apps selection in the settings where you can pick the default launcher.
One more suggestion that might get it where you can login to Google would be to locate the factory reset option in the settings. Since you couldn't install any new apps on it anyway, not much to lose customization wise.
I believe there is a system patch for the FYT IS7862 units. My IDoing came working so I assume it was already patched, but if you head to the Joying thread you'll see posts about a system patch. Not sure that patch will work for your unit, I think that's what you need.
Actually, they are being pretty helpful. They just sent me an update I have yet to install (kind of afraid as it is working now and I realized I don't really need google integration. Here is a screenshot. Good to know it is a FYT IS7862 unit.
Here is the new firmware she sent me and instructions. Honestly kinda scared. She didn't tell me what I am upgrading to, she just said new version. Maybe someone could check this RAR out if they have time?
https://wetransfer.com/downloads/2f...6e4ab0a57f920b634846c7f920210515022252/aac7ff
Just for fun I went to the download page and did a screenshot of the page. I then ran the screenshot through the Google translate app. With the transition set to go from Chinese to English, the download link says "overseas system. rar".
You could possibly run the PNG file that you attached to your post thru Google translate and maybe figure out the filenames. The picture is not clear enough to do the same as the picture resolution is pretty bad. Was hoping maybe the download filename would offer some clues about what the rar file contains.
Maybe you could request from whoever sent you the link, an English version of the download if available. Granted they say something about English text showing up in green after the flash. I could totally understand your apprehension since you cannot read the filenames.
I could unrar the file and try getting filename translations, might be helpful.
Man, I really appreciate you looking into that for me. I went ahead and bit the bullet and did it and it booted up with a different theme and reset to factory settings. Seems to be dropping my home wifi connection now. I havent tried putting a sim card in the unit yet, as I only have a micro sim from my tablet. I asked her several times what we are upgrading and she said it's not the android version, but a fix to make google login work. So, I went to login to google and instead of getting hung up and crashing after the "checking info..." screen it actually had a box to type my gmail address and let me type it and press login. Then it said "Cannot contact google servers, try again later.
This 1.4 GB file seems large for a small fix. There were like three ZIP files in the rar. Also, when I look at what is using memory on the unit there are like 10 apps I didn't open in the background. Makes me feel like the mfg. has some spyware or malware on the unit. Isn't it commonplace to completely wipe one of these units clean and install a different version of android? Why couldn't I just install android 11? Is it becasue I wont be able to find the apks for unique apps and functionality on there?
They usually (never) provide system patches that fix one specific thing. By providing the whole system update it still makes it impossible to know exactly what's being installed.
Unfortunately it's not so simple to go from one version of Android to another as they intentionally make it difficult to do. It kind of puts a lifespan on these units. There's always gonna be something broken or something that will eventually break rendering the unit useless or just be a flaw that you end up accepting. Plus by limiting the Android version its planned obsolescence as updates won't always be available forever.
Maybe and it's a big maybe you can find an alternative ROM for your particular system right here on XDA. Those are becoming more and more rare because of numerous factors however.
I wouldn't recommend logging into the head unit with a Google account that has a payment method associated with it. Maybe create a whole new Google account just in case? Also you could try going somewhere that you can get free public WiFi (e.g WalMart, McDonald's, etc). All that would do is confirm it works, for what it's worth.
Regarding the wifi connectivity issue, was it able to connect to the same wifi before applying that provided update? Is the wifi signal strength good? It's likely connecting to the wifi but not getting an IP address and other connection parameters and disconnecting on failure. There is an advanced workaround that involves manually setting the network connection parameters (e.g IP address, etc) but you'd need to be comfortable with doing that sort of thing. Let me know if interested.
Despite the update essentially doing a factory reset as part of the firmware installation, I suggest manually doing a factory reset. Maybe even do the reset a couple times just to be sure. Truth is that the device should just work out of the box without the extra contortions.
Apparently the Google login problem is a common issue and there are claims of Google hacks on these units as well:
Post in thread 'New Joying Android 10 UIS7862 Octacore 1.8GHz (4GB RAM, 64GB flash)' https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...8ghz-4gb-ram-64gb-flash.4168069/post-85003075
I was looking at one of these on Aliexpress and found this thread. @CaliBurr, do you have any updates on how this is unit is working out for you?

Help how i active Skoda Rapid 2018 android auto

Hi,
My car is block by the delar if i want to open it i must pay the delar to enter the code that can open me the mirorlink and android auto.
how can i hack it and to active mirorlink and android auto?
Maybe the mirrorlink app is just a primitive screen mirroring solution. This is funny for the first 10 seconds but not optimal to use during driving - and very dangerous.
So first think about if it makes sense to invest too much time into this app.
Best approach I know is Headunit Reloaded. You can find it here on xda and in Google Playstore.

If EasyCon isn't pre-installed on your unit give this alternative a try:
[App] Tima PhoneLink APK aka carnet
This is a great app for your head unit it allows you to view your phone's screen no root required and it is completely free. This app came with my android headunit preinstalled but I deleted it by mistake, after hours of search in chinese sites...

If you are talking about the standard builtin unit of the Skoda Rapid, you can forget it.
This (sub-)forum is about 3rd party Android units that replace the the standard units in cars, in this case your Skoda Rapid.
There is an Android Auto (sub-)forum here.
Mirrolink is a standard for a few brands of cars and Skoda is one of them. In most Skodas, as well as other brands, it is an optional feature which you need to pay for to unlock it.
You cannot hack it. And even if you are successful in hacking it, your warranty will be void.
If you want full functionality, you need to pay. And if you want a replacement of the unit, you need to search on Aliexpress and seach for "Android Skoda Rapid", and you will find something like this.
Note: This link is just an example.
Everything you want simply costs money. You have to accept that.

Allwinner T5-UP-F52LA - root

Hello All,
Please forgive me if this is posted somewhere else, but I live in Indonesia and am far removed from anyone I know who can help me figure this out.
I just purchased an "Orca ADR-9988 Pro+" Android 10 Head Unit for our family car... but realize the stock Android 10 firmware in very limited. (No advanced settings, no ability to set default apps, etc.)
In the "About Car Device" section is says the device is: T5-UP-F52LA/Hardware by UP/Powered by Allwinner
I've seen some help for Allwinner T5 devices, but not specifically for the F52LA .
I'll include two photos I grabbed from the device just a short time ago.
I"m primarily interested in being able to update the zLink app if needed (It is currently listed as zLink version 3.6.26) as well as hopefully install a custom launcher like Agama - and actually set the launcher as the default launcher.
Sorry if this has been explained elsewhere and I"m just not finding it. I'm new to android head units so this is all new to me.
Thanks!
