Can't lock bootloader, help appreciated - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I originally bought my Moto G5 Plus unlocked from Best Buy. XT1687. I rooted it a couple years ago, tried Lineage out for a bit, and something else. I ended up putting it on 8.1.0 and unrooted it, however, I can't lock the bootloader. The image signature fails, and the pre activation fails as well. Everything I've found online says this means I'm trying to install an older version of Android than what's on my Moto. My Moto is only running 8.1.0 though. I'm just trying to get back to factory settings and official US retus XT1687 conditions. Any help for this would be greatly appreciated.

You need singed image of firmware to flash the device and lock the bootloader. You can get singed image from here or from Lenovo moto smart assistant.
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/
But I suggest you to keep the device bootloader unlock to keep safe from getting hard bricked or any other problems which occurs after installing stock ROM.

Thank you, I was looking around and having quite a hard time finding anything. It's not my main phone so I'm not so worried about it bricking. Currently the Lenovo tools can't connect to it anyway.

Boot into fastboot and connect the device to pc, select moto g5 plus, rescue option and flash the device or you can manually flash the device, with the firmware I gave above.

You could reflash the software back to before the update with the KXZ firmware and try the process over again. Depends if the hassle is worth it to you.

This process is just flashing the firmware through rsdlite which won't happen because it's a downgrade. I tried.

first things I tried and doesn't work
I did the update and protected root but my wifi was messed up and wouldn't turn on. I did RSDLite to downgrade and redo it all and it worked fine.
BTW I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515
Some of us didn't want root in the first place! #TeamStockMotoX :silly:
I'm confused as to why someone wouldn't just unlock their bootloader if they are going to be making changes to their system. I understand the warranty issue but who uses that? Most people go through asurion and they won't even notice. Haha

Your wifi was only screwed up within Recovery mode (write off) correct?
I have a similiar issue. Whether its affecting other things or not, i dont know.
But what do you mean you restored via RSD lite and did it all over again and it was fine?
How did you ujse RSD lite to reflash the firmware since you got the updated OTA, it wont let you downgrade

My wifi was messed up in any mode. It wouldn't turn on for some reason. I restored the 17.51 firmware after the botched update messed up my wifi and it worked fine and I actually ended up doing it 2 times since a titanium backup messed up my phone. I was definitely on the 17.54 update. It definitely let me downgrade. How would you like me to prove it to you?
my wifi messed up in recovery mode but lte works. Normal mode everything is fine. I am rooted now with latest update.

Add me in as another one with no wifi in recovery. Normal mode works just fine as well. Would be nice if there was a fix for this but just glad to still have root with the update.

Me too. My wifi is FUBARED in recovery. It's because we don't have the new kernel and to be technical were using the old system/recovery in our "recovery mode" I think that's why it's working in the regular mode and not recovery mode..... Or that's what I understand. Though I'm probably wrong.
When I upgraded I got a failed upgrade after final boot. Although it still says the newest version. I'm tempted to RSD back like some others have just to try but I don't want a paper weight.

While I'm kind of excited to see SafeStrap out, and updated (fixes phone/data, etc...), I'm still hoping some attempt is in the works for unlock on at&t.
Regardless, there aren't any custom roms to really flash anyways.
Had I an unlocked bootloader, I'd have a custom kernel in the works, and maybe some custom roms with some TeamAcid love.
Come see, come saw... Patience wins all.

Accidentally flashed wrong firmware!!

Hi everyone, I am confused as to what to do with my moto g4 plus. Actually motorola had released an update which lowered my notification and ringtone volume. Sometimes it wasn't even audible, so I decided to restore the stock rom. I downloaded xt-1643 firmware since that is my model number. After flashing that firmware I suddenly couldn't access recovery mode. My phone did boot up but it was stuck on the searching Wi-Fi screen and I couldn't even skip it. What should I do? Pls someone give me a potential solution asap. Thank you!!

You can't hardbrick your device by unlocking the bootloader.
You can with flashing wrong versions of stock rom, downgrading and taking OTA afterwards and maybe by flashing a really bad custom rom.
There may be more scenarios but unlocking is not one of them.

I don't see a reason for that and I never heard of cases where a device gets bricked with that firmware update. The 93-10/92-10 firmware is uploaded here and I know that users locked their BL with it. Motorola allows unlocking for retail devices, it would be very bad publicity if you go on their website, get the unlock code and after using it your device gets bricked.
Just use no toolkits for things like locking, rooting or flashing TWRP, do it the manual way.

is it necessary to factory reset??? Something that I've always liked about samsung is that I update using Odin and the apps and confs still the same... but if I have to factory reset, then I will lost everything...

All Samsung's have multiple ways of backing up and restoring. All you have to do is back up using Samsung cloud and when you start your phone it will ask you if you want to restore your phone and then everything will automatically come back to your phone. Factory reset fixes boot loop and other issues

Great, I also found my signal to be better as far as staying connected is concerned. At one point my data kept going out on the atnt firmware and I had to keep restarting the phone or mess with the Wi-Fi calling. I haven't had any problems since I flashed this and plus 8 is faster than 7 so I'm excited to not have to mess with this phone anymore and just leave it up to ota updates.

Which sim card do you have and which carrier provides the phone because then you might have to flash back to 7 and use your carriers official firmware or flash your carriers official 8 firmware.

If there was root before (there is), then I'm pretty sure it will soon be available for Oreo too. I don't see why there wouldn't be unless those individuals who created or found the engineering kernel for MM AND N, aren't around to help out again. If not, back to 6.0 it goes.
HI, Now I'm on a custom rom with Nougat. Sim's carrier is Orange(UE). If I flash this Official Oreo version the phone will become Locked, right? Any idea how to unlock it, no charges? Thanks!
Thanks for the upload. I was trying to see if SamMobile had this up yet but they did not have it up when I checked. I have the MetroPCS variant and it did have 8.0 available on SamMobile already. I am switching from MetroPCS to T-Mobile so this will be perfect to get my phone 100% ready.

Is my Moto G4 Play dead ?

Hi, I have a huge problem with my phone.
Recently I flashed the stock ROM in version 6.0 for my moto g4 play and I tried to do the updates. during the second update, my phone went out and this is the hard brick I was running on Android 7.1 before so I think there's an incompatibility beetween the bootloader and the OS, that's why my device is bricked
Using Blank Flash I was able to start my phone in fastboot mode. But this process locked my bootloader.
atm I am in fastboot mode with a locked bootloader and USB debug not activated, what can I do ? I can't flash anything...
Thanks
please I'm desperate. Is there nothing to do ?
Hey I was on the same boat, my moto G4 play was out of warranty and with just ₹300 they fixed the software. If you are from Kolkata then visit the Chadni service center, the guys are really helpful and cooperative. Now this moto G4 boots and works. That blank file that you flashed from the other thread is not correct for XT1602. I learnt this from the service center. Just take it to the service center and they will fix it up for you.
