Just bought Nvidia Shield (2017) that is rooted & running Pie 9.0. Plex Question - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As title. I have just purchased a 2017 Shield TV, and it came rooted with Pie 9.0. Now, I don't really care for that at all. I mostly just use Plex with my devices, and that's why I bought this. Save me turning on my Xbox One X just to watch a movie, ha ha. I don't really want an extra "warning" screen when I boot it up, and would prefer it to simply just work from the remote (I may consider selling on the controller as I have multiple xbox / PS4 / Switch / 8bitdo controllers if required).
Anyway, as it has full Android on there, rather than the original Shield OS, do I loose anything with respect to the Plex app (which is my most used app), or Amazon Prime Video? Are there any other media limitations that I may experience from running a rooted system?
I am relatively happy with flashing firmwares and such (I regularly play about with CFW on my Switches and Vitas). So is there a guide anywhere that will show me how to put this shield back to stock? Rooted or otherwise.

if you want to flash the device back to stock go here
https://developer.nvidia.com/gameworksdownload
make sure you read everything about how to do it first and make sure you download the correct rom image for the correct device otherwise you will brick the device.
i have the 2017 16gb model with the developer rom (stock rom with root capability). i rooted mine with magisk but really i don't see any reason to really root it other than adblocking. i use mine mainly for plex and iptv. i do use atv laucher pro. i don't like the stock home screen setup. also i can download just about any app from https://www.apkmirror.com/ put the apk on a usb stick and load it with es file manager or even the stock file manager software.

Thanks for the help. I got there in the end. Had a panic when it refused to boot, and couldn't get into fastboot to try a factory reset, but plugging my keyboard in, rather than the controller, and locking the bootloader helped that.
Now back on stock and got it all set up and running. As expected, Plex is MILES better than on my Xbox One X...

New N7 Owner, a few Questions

Hi all
Im a new Owner of a 2nd hand (but perfect) N7(JB v411) and Ive been reading around the forums and the web, Ive used Android phones for awhilw now, but never a tablet, so a few Questions:
- My N7 also suffers from the Screen lifting, which I followed the instructions, tightened all the screws, but it still creaks on the left side, is that ok, or should the screw tighten fix it?
.
- I also get the grey colour banding ONLY in settings, but everything else is black backgrounds and bright icons and menus, with no dead pixels anywhere.. does that mean my device is ok?
- Do I have to root and unlock N7 to get the 720p video. If I do unlock and root., can i still recieve OTA updates from ASUS/Google and any Nexus specific Apps on Market place as well as updates to Apps linked to my google account.
- Because my device was 2nd hand, I wanted to do a Factory Reset > Cache Wipe> Dalvik Cache through recovery, but all I get (Vol Up, V Dwn, PWR) is a big Start icon, android on its back and tiny text in the corner, but no recovery menu, so is it possible to still get to it, or can I d/l a 3rd party recovery mode without rooting or unlocking, so i can get my $25 and my transformers movie. OR is factory Reset in Settings, good enough.
Any advice
Night
As anew Nexus 7 owner, I share these questions as well.
Can anybody reply ?
Specially, I'd like to root my N7 but shall I receive OTA updates then ? If not, how can I receive OTA after rooting ? (any method to un-root ?)
Btw, do we still have no kernel that supports OTG USB for USB flash memory ?
thx.
Rooting it's not going to block ota updates. You'll have to root every time you update.
Factory reset can be done in settings
Just my opinion but don't root your n7. I've seen too many problems with people trying to root and screwing up their devices. I think you have to have root to use the 720p recording but think about it can you really record quality video without being able to see the screen? Currently you have the most up to date device so putting a new ROM or kernel won't put you ahead. Anytime you root and change roms's or kernels there's always drawbacks (ergo force closes). This is just my opinion. As of now no apps or games require anything above the hardware we have so why over clock a CPU or GPU???
kieso,
I've been an Android phone & tablet user for last 2,5 years. It's quite a long time. N7 is my second tablet and 5th Android device.
I've always used my Android devices with root. Because atleast for cifs, ntfs and vpn access I require a custom kernel/ROM.
Rooting does not mean using custom ROM/kernel. So it's not something to be afraid of, as you seem to be.
Now, back to our original questions:
- What is the best way of rooting/unrooting Nexus 7 ?
- Do we have a method to support USB OTG for USB disks ? (what about NTFS ?)

Is used N7 Toolkit to unlock/root/... my N7, its easy to use so you may check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
For USB OTG support you may check out media nexus importer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&hl=de)
A Friend told me CM10 also supports USB OTG, but I haven't tried it.
For 720p video, see this short article:
http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus-7-can-shoot-720p-video-its-front-facing-camera-it-useful
Nexus 7 is my first tablet and first android device. I rooted using wugfresh's tool, which worked fine for me.

If you choose to root, do it sooner rather than later. You need to "unlock" before you "root", and unlocking resets some of your settings. Not a big deal, just more of a PITA to redo all your personalizations. I'm glad I rooted and just got it over with. Now I never have to worry about not being able to use an app. If you are interested in customizing and adding lots of apps, sooner or later you're likely to hit a barrier where you need root. Read the many guides on here, you'll find the rooting the nexus 7 is relatively easy compared to most devices, and perhaps not as scary as it might sound at first.
nexus 7
I think biggest bonus to unlock and root nexus 7 is you can buy otg cable google it and then use usb drive for extra storage with app called stick mount free on the playstore. I had 8 gig model i could use my 32 gb flash drive giving me 37 gb of storage as apposed to 5 gig of storage.

Cool app for those who aren't rooted. If you are rooted, also check out StickMount on the google play store.
I've rooted using the Toolkit v2.0.0
it's easy...
now I'm looking for a kernel with CIFS support as the stock kernel does not support CIFS.
any recommendations?
seems like Faux's kernel at following thread supports USB OTG natively without any 3rd party app:

Nvidia Shield 2017 downgrade

Can I use the stock recovery OS for Software Upgrade 3.3.0 on the shield 2017? I wan't to use this to keep the HDHomeRun App to still work with DRM Channels.
I've asked the same question on another board and haven't got an answer. I also had a chat with Nvidia and the guy kept asking why I wanted to do that. I just asked is the 3.3 firmware compatible. He didn't give me an answer.
im kinda wondering what would happen if i did it? i have a 2017 shield but i dont feel like bricking it today lol
Did you brick yours? I oem unlocked and mine doesn't boot anymore. I do see it in windows as APX in device manager.
You'll probably brick your device. I say this because I highly doubt the new shield shares the exact same hardware as the old. It may be running X1 just like the old shield but the Bluetooth wifi ram internal storage etc are most likely different.
any1 get adb to work on 2017 model?
adb works fine, make sure you have a male to male usb cable, and enable it under the storage setting menu, should be called usb transfer or something.
My guy at NVidia said, "I wouldn't recommend doing that."
He was interested in more information - so I passed along the OP.
My Nvidia guy asked:
Can you find out what version of HDHomeRun app he is using? Is the app the green or grey version?
Green
i can get adb to work re reboot/push/pull but cant get any shell commands to work, all return errors, is there anything i can do

Can I root my Shield TV Pro (2015) and still receive OTA updates?

I've tried to search but I'm finding it surprisingly hard to find the answer.
Can I root my Shield TV Pro (2015) and still receive OTA updates from Nvidia? If so, how do I do this? (do I need to install 'systemless' root or the standard method?)
Also, does Amazon or Netflix break when the system is rooted?
Thanks for any help!
Yes you can... What I would refrain from doing if I were you would be to install TWRP as your Recovery. You can fastboot load it all the live long day... Assuming you have nothing better than ye old 1080p Panel. If you have a 4k Panel though you might not have a better choice, but to install it. Since just loading it will land you with a Black Screen.
But, ion installing it (i.e. TWRP), will cause it to load up fine. But, will cause you problems with eventual Updates.
My advice to anyone even considering this avenue, would be to read the first Page of the SSD Migration Thread here and, use that Info to create a hard backup first. Which may well come in handy down the line.

[ROOT] 4k Element Amazon Fire TV 5.2.5.0 with Kingroot (margo/ aftrs)

On a whim i downloaded kingroot from their website, and sideloaded it to my tv. ran it, and i am rooted! i was very surprised since aftvnews said this firmware wasn't rootable.
https://kingroot.net/
sideload using adb over wifi, or toss it on a usb stick or sd card and install it with es file manager or similar.
i can toss up a video if anyone needs proof.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=430mVIUrkog there we go.
now just need to see if someone can get a build of twrp running on this thing so i can get xposed. XD
Maybe it will work on my 2nd Gen Fire TV.
Attempted root
I tried to root my Element Fire TV on Ver. 5.2.5.1 using King root and it failed. Afterwards none of the home page items would load up just the very top bar where you can select settings. However I was able to factory reset it and everything is back to normal.

Have you been brave enough to try it?
Also how you suppose I could go about getting the fire TV version of the app store. I accidentally overwrote mine with the tablet version. It messed some things up...

Can you tell me what arm version the TV runs on ?, If its not 64 bit and you can connect with ADB over usb there is a possibility that my guide I made for the fire stick v1 on installing xposed before a recovery was released could work, especially if you can factory reset the TV then you would have no loss for trying.
pretty sure it is arm64, and i don't have an A-A cable, which i assume would be needed for the tv, since it only has A ports.

Yes well i know it worked with the original firestick I've no sure way of saying it would work for any other device to be honest, when I was searching for ways to install xposed on the firestick before rbox released a recovery I was trial and erroring alot of things and wasn't too bothered of bricking because I'd of been able to get another quite cheap. If there is a sure fire way of a recovery from anything on the fire TV then I'd say give it a shot but if there isn't anyway of recovering from a non boot situation I'd not suggest it.

DJI PHANTOM 4 PRO + Custom Rom

Not sure if anyone here does drones, but there is a requirement for a custom rom for the DJI GL300E remote controller.
DJI has a drone remote controller with a built in screen called the GL300E which runs a bastardised form of Android 5.1 that has no google play store or google play services.
So we cant use third party apps that rely on those services.
How feasible would it be to engineer a custom rom that has these components installed?
I realise this is a bit of a long shot and not many folk round here will be terribly interested or know what I'm on about but I thought i'd give it a go!
I thought only me that need this .... It has been depressing hours of adb shell methods with no luck ... I think reasonable price for everyone who made the custom ROM is welcome
Up ...

st10+ rooted

.. I used kingroot to root the st10+ A custom rom is what im after as well just havent figured what some of the apps are for on it and there use the radios are restricted by cpu and memory to start with but at lest with it rooted there is a open door ....I will pay 100 paypal or give a nice drone 55+mph 32min fly time brushless motors for help completing the same and i can send all the files and info device is rooted now

this guy roots the controller and gets google play store working. Now you have to register your device with google as a custom Rom user.
I used deviceID.apk to find out the number google wants.
Hmm, dunno what I did but I have a soft bricked Pro Plus controller GL300E.
The DJI logo comes up but just stays stuck there. The ADB bridge from My PC still works though.
Anyone got a nandroid backup or a stock image?
Help!
lol.
I unbricked it using iroot PC software, however that seems to have installed loads of stealth adware which makes the RC unusable as a remote controller.
Also......
I was Using the Official TWRP app to experiment with a different recovery for RK3288 devices but it didnt work.
I made a backup of the stock recovery and then i made a backup of boot aswell because it seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately the filenames were hidden behind the flash now button and I think the second backup overwrote the first so I have lost my backup original recovery.img.
Could someone with a rooted GL300e take a backup of their recovery using the Official TWRP app or similar and post it somewhere so I can download it and replace the stock recovery so I can then flash the stock firmware bin file you get from DJI.
https://forum.dji.com/thread-108560-1-1.html
At the moment when I try to flash the stock firmware bin files doing a local install from the SD card, when it reboots to complete the process nothing happens, it just reboots. There is no little green android on its back with a blue progress bar, because there is no recovery installed so the process never begins. I'm getting tired of naked ladies all over the screen when I'm trying to fly my drone..... (joke)
Someone gave me a copy of the stock recovery so its all fixed.
I flashed an older firmware using the sd card and it allows me to set FCC (0.4 Watt) and boost (1.5 Watt) TX power from R/C and A/C by using the .DJI.configs hack.
