Covers... any tips/experiences? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e Questions & Answers

Hi,
As long time user of the Tab S2 models and their covers I'm in the market for a Tab S5e. However, the original cover costs 20% of the prize of the top spec tablet, which is to rich for my budget. (as I'd rather have a top spec with cheaper cover, then an entry level spec with official cover)
What are your experiences with the after-market covers and any advice on which type to pick (looking at usability and protection in case of a drop)
I found this look-alike of the Samsung cover: (ebay link) and this as an alternative aproach where the cover is universal and the PU fitting is model specific. (ebay link)
The tablet will mostly be used for gaming/reading while in hand.

This is the one I use. Only $10 on eBay. There are probably more heavy duty models, but I hate buying a modern light weight tablet and then putting it in a bulky case.

I am using the official Samsung Keyboard Cover with my SGT5e, which is ok. The typing experience on it is pretty good. But sometimes the connection to the pogo pins seem to be quite temperamental as you have to have them placed just right onto the connectors.

Thanks, this is the model I went for. (EU based supplier was more useful for me)
With some luck the tablet arrives this week just before the cover.

I have this one too and it works really well. It doesn't add a lot of weight or bulk.

Yeah. I've had that problem too. You have to make sure it's seats properly. Once seated it works great.

Seidio's Innocase Surface Case - Black

I've never had one before, but heard good things about the Seidio case. It's available for order now.

I just ordered the case and clip combo.

I owned the seidio clip holster for my Kaiser and loved it!! Very sturdy and comfortable. Will definitely be ordering one for my Rafael.
Have the hybrid case for the Kaiser. It still is a top-notch case (once Seidio gets their head out of their ass about their online support).
Just got the Innocase and it's much much better quality than the other Amazon one.
Another truly excellent case after the hybrid Seidio case on the Kaiser.
First 3 pictures are of Innocase
4th is with Amazon's case's top with thick borders around the screen
5th is comparison of these "Touch" screen border thickness.
Macro-mode for those that haven't figured it out in the Youtube videos. Yes, Amazon's case has its rubberization already peeling before I took it out of its shipping packet.

Very illuminating photos - thank-you!
Was "reasonably certain" that would not find using the Touch Screen with a FINGER all that attractive - after all, have hardly ever used my Axim without the Stylus.
But in actual practice find that it IS often convenient to simply swipe a finger at the screen, and so your comments about the relative Screen Border Thickness - and hence the possibility of interference with finger-contact near the edges of the screen - are very interesting.
Still, $30 seems a lot for small hunk of plastic....

As illustrated, the Seidio case is thin (on width) around the screen leaving plenty of space for finger-gestures. Hitting X and menus at bottom is no problem. The Amazon case felt like it was a 8525 again.
There's also velvet in the case back so it doesn't scratch the OEM smooth back. This raises the back a few mm above the original diamond plate, but with the speaker hole, it's all around good protection.
For $30, Seidio tends to be the first and last case you'll ever get because it's a perfect fit, and solid at protection and surviving drops. Only reason to switch to another case is they come out with some other fancy idea such as a hybrid rubber-crystal case + holster, or other colors. I would go for a white case.
I paid $8 (total) for the Amazon case and you can see what I got. Horribly fitting, messes with the slider, rubberization peeling before it came out of the bag. $30 isn't that bad especially since I'm still very happy with the hybrid-case I got for my Kaiser last year.
edit:
whatever case you guys end up getting, I have to say my FUZE is a much more pleasant beast now that the cold, slimy feeling is gone.
the amazon case you purchased is not a good example of the other options out there. I am not saying anything negative about the Seido case. I have seen it personally and it is a nice case, but the one on Ebay that many are buying is also pretty nice, and no issues with the pealing your pictures showed. The employees in my company have 6 Fuze phones and no one has had any issues like that. The biggest illusion with the phone shown at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459761 is that the border is white and not black like the rest of the case.
The $30 cost is the main objection, but in general Seido makes quality cases.
Overall it is very positive that there are multiple options now available and more coming each day.
does this one interfere with teh screen as reported on the other amazon/ebay one? something about the inside of the upper left corner pressing down on the screen makes one unable to use the screen after having the case on for a few days... the only way to resolve this with the other one is to file down the inside of the plastic part that touches the screen...

I'm interested in the answer to this question too. My initial attempt at sanding down my rubberized ebay case was not successful, my phone still locked up after a couple of days.
Fuze innocase owners, are you lockup free after days of operation?

on your ebay case, why are you still locking up? mine is not locking up anymore at all after sanding down a little on the inside upper left side?

Just because you're happy with the work you put into fixing your Ebay case does not mean you should troll other case threads to protect your investment and mind-share about it. Also stating that I'm not a Seidio apologist since I haven't had the greatest shipping experience last time around, and their CS/managers lying back-and-forth about it.
Lock-ups? Are you seriously kidding? That's a red-flag for me right there. Even the Amazon case doesn't have that problem.
The Innocase is a perfect fit with no modifications necessary. That's what paying a slight premium gets you. Costs less than getting the Expansys Touch Pro back too.
It's like paying for the unlocked version of the phone. No crapware, loads of accessories, and special attention to details the cut-rate version doesn't have.
I've noticed the Ebay case has a huge clip tab right next to the volume-up button. The Seidio case clips seem to be more thoughtfully placed, and smaller, thinner. In fact, the bottom case has a cut-out curve around the volume/PTT buttons also that helps the case stay out of the way.
Thank you for you info, and no trolling (that made me laugh) intended. I have the ebay case AND have ordered the Seido case, which we were waiting for. Thanks again.

I've had the case, belt clip and charger for a few days. Overall, I'm very happy with the products, and would purchase Seidio equipment again in the future. I've had a few different cases for my old 8525, and I like this one for my Fuze the best.
I love the case. It's not bulky, and has a good feel to it. I wasn't sure about the clips that hold the case to the phone, because they looked fragile...but it holds very nicely.
The belt clip for the case is fine. Seems to hold the phone and case in very well, and the belt clip will not slip off any belt I've tried it on.
The charger...I'm not happy with it. That's my fault not Seidio's, I didn't read the description of the charger. I'm sure it's a quality product. It is a small dock type charger, but comes with a cable with two large USB connections on it. So it can be docked when plugged into a computer's USB. I thought it would have a connection to plug into a wall outlet.
Just bought the combo pack, Will post pics when it arrives.
Just wondering if this case will fit the Bell / CDMA version, is it a rubber type compound, as well does the case scratch the phone in any way?
Thanks
Some questions?
For ppl that have the combo case/holster. Can you put the phone with the case on it, in the holster with screen facing in (screen facing you) and out (screen facing away from you)?
Thanks

Hey TVDinner, why did you order the Seidio case? Did your filed ebay case start locking up again?
To answer your question to me in my earlier response, I don't know why my ebay case locked up after my filing attempt. Maybe I didn't file it enough? My tolerance level for trial and error is pretty low, so maybe I'll just order the innocase...

Hi jknuckey - no my ebay case is working great to be honest. no issues at all after my initial filing on it. But I always need to have "the best" case, lol. I was originally waiting for the Seidio one, but they were taking to long and I ordered the ebay one. then shortly after the Seidio one became available, lol.

There are two models of the holster.
One that fits only just the phone:

- Soft-touch "rubberized" texture provides a unique look and extra protection
- Face-in design protects your device's screen
- Locking swivel belt clip with 7 rotating angles
- Easy access to connectors"
One that only fits the phone with the case:

"Seidio’s Innocase holster offers the best carrying solution when paired with our Innocase.
- Designed specifically for Seidio Innocases

The holsters are custom fit, the phone only goes in facing you.

Acer Protective Case Review UPDATE May 6th

I just picked up the Acer Protective Case. It costs $40 plus tax at Staples.
Build & function:
1. Flimsy- About half the weight & material of similar iPad products and inferior to the Xoom case.
2. Lint magnet The combination of black and the texture used, can stick and show things you did not even notice was there when sat down. UPDATE (I wiped the case down gently with a wet cloth and this seems to reduce the sticky-factor by half).
3. The Display flap and stand function are very flimsy and offers minimum protection at best. Medium accute pressure will not be stopped by the cover plates. The main folding part attached to the case is very flimsy and seems likely to perhaps tear over a few months of heavy use. The actual stand function (due to the flimsy plates) is weak. UPDATE (It is not as bad as I thought at first, since the flap does provide "decent" protection.)
4. The "locking system" is a tiny petty velcro button. Very lame and does a poor job fastening and will not last long at all.
5. For drops, the corners and design COULD possibly handle a corner hit of a few feet (on carpet is safer bet). Not sure and do not care to test
6. The fit is tight, but good- once in place (please no jokes...).
If this were $20 it would be okay, but at $40, it is not okay and terrible mark-up cost. At least with the iPad cases, you get good material, fairly solid plates and no flimsy feel.
When considering cost and build, this case is a "C-" at best. This case is not a $40 case. Going back (probably.... nothing else out there). I will probably order from Acer for $10 less, since this case is STILL better than a $20 skin.
added:
At $20, it would be a "B", perhaps, since better than nothing. Heck, $30 would pass. Seems Staples marked this up too high, since Acer is selling the same for $20. The middleman mark-up is a "tad" too high.
added part two:
Considering grip skins for Iconia are going for about $20, this case is a better option. The grade curve is kind to this product, since the only one. If the plates were more solid and a magnet fastener used, this would not be that bad and OK for $40.
Final perspective:
At $30 total cost from Acer, the case is okay since it provides the following function in one:
1. Thin & light (not much weight or footprint added)
2. Provides "decent" overall protection.
3. Snug fit and conforms to the A500 design (not need to customize it like other non A500 options).
4. Provides a very much needed grip skin function.
I give it a "B" at $30.
Definitely agree with you on the material's lint and smudge magnet, although I'm actually kinda happy that it's lighter than most competing tablet cases - the Iconia's a bit heavy for a tablet already so a heavier case might have actually pushed the limit for me in terms of what I'm willing to carry around.
In terms of the 'stand' function yeah, it's definitely "meh". Related note, it took me 2 days to even realize that you're supposed to tuck the back edge up into the "Acer" slot; I was simply flipping that edge down rather than up and the friction kept it in place. It does the job for me but that's all.
My only dislikes really so far are:
the seam on three of the edges (which are probably part of the safety design, so I shouldn't complain)
the lack of any fabric on the inside of the panel cover means my screen has a nice solid line where the seam on the panel cover isn't touching the screen (but the rest of the cover section is.) I can see getting some microfiber cloth or something to put on that part of the case to keep the screen cleaner, would have been nice to have that built in.
In general I've found that the case is better for carrying the tablet than no protection at all, and far more convenient than using my messenger bag all the time, and it keeps the screen in a readable position for me while I read.
I'd have been happier with it at a lower price, but at least it's not $80 like the Nook Color cases I bought my parents for Christmas, even if those are much nicer materials.
I agree that the premise of a smaller, lighter case is nice and practical (since doubles as a grip skin too). The issue is price, the flimsy plates and velcro love button.
The case would be okay at $20. Seems $40 was Staples decision, since $20 at Acer.com.
hell. didn't know it was at $20 in acer.com , and my only complain is the price.
I was looking on the acer site yesterday and can't find it there.

And the back-order wait, from what I've heard.
I have the Acer case, and it's a huge step up from nothing. I feel a lot better carrying the tab around the office with the case.
I wish there were a way to make it stand at an angle when in portrait mode, too. When in landscape mode, and using the more upright angle, the tab tends to slip just a little, obscuring the camera and sensor. No biggie, though.
Waiting on my Zagg skin for the screen. Seems like the gorilla glass is prone to smudges and smears (and I wash my hands now and then).
A coworker of mine just received his case from Staples and I was wondering if you noticed the same thing I did; the smell.
The case he received reminds me of growing up around cows (grew up in a rural area), it seriously smells like a cow barn. Maybe its poorly treated leather, i dont know...
Thanks for the update. I probably still will go to a Staples this weekend to look at them myself, but at least I know what I am looking for with your review.
As for shopping from Acer, I was one of those that ordered online. Be warned: they want $10 for shipping on top of the $19, so it's more like $30 to purchase.
I canceled my order because no where did it say it was out of stock, only to find out the day after my online purchase. I had them cancel my order because I paid for 2nd day delivery when to find it would take 3 weeks to get one.
At least it's accessories and not the unit itself that is out of stock.

The smell seems to have something to do with the sticky factor too. I lightly washed the outside of the case and this cut the smell down and the sticky factor with lint.
The smell will mostly go away after a few weeks.

Agree with you on the quality of the case. It feels like it was a rush job -- rush as in a week before the tablet's release date. I'd rate it a "D," actually, and definitely not worth $39.99.
Right now I'm debating whether to go ahead and widen that slice on the top edge to allow access to the external SD port.

Yeah, after using more it seems to be a "D" in relation to $40, but a "B" still seems fair at $20, since it does provide protection and some function. The grip skin function is a plus.
It is also nice in the dark, since easier to find the ports.
The microsd slot not being accounted for seems a silly miss by the OEM and also by Acer not catching it. Maybe they did, but thought the reduced rib at the top would not provide enough support to the top. The design seems intentional, in case of a drop.
lame case
I bought this at staples.I cant say its the worse thing i have seen .But its better then none at all.The mic oort is at the wrong side
Can not believe they.did that
Staples case
I bought one at Staples today and all things considered I don't think it's that bad. The integrated cover/stand is a nice touch especially if you are using it as a Powerpoint viewer for a small meeting.
One could argue if any of this stuff is worth the money but I guess the 'worth' is an individual thing.
Having something with a 'grip' to hang onto is much better then the slippery aluminum case back. MY hand slipped today resulting in a short 1 foot drop and I decided to get a case. Not really to protect as much as provide the grip surface.
Just my $0.02
After using this for almost a week I really like it. Just think it should be cheeper. For $20-$25 i'd call it a must buy. At $40..... I like it, but hard to recommend it.
Grip skins go for about $20, so this case at least supplies that function and some protection.
I guess considering a tiny plastic protection case for an iPod is $20 to $30, one could spin the $40 is not so bad for this case.....
Can you post some of the photos of your protective case ?
I like the case as it's thin & light. We don't have it for sale here in Hong Kong. Most of the A500 users here would like to get one locally but with no luck as Acer HK said they don't have a schedule of delivering this case. Therefore, they're thinking to buy them from US online and ship them back to HK.
Regarding the price, I hope it can be cheaper, but considering that the price is close to what Apple offered on their iPad 1 cases, I have no complaint.
Got my case today, glad I only paid $20 for it! (Acer online store before they changed the prices).
Why is the heat seal around the edge so blasted big? Other than that, like the stand feature, but I will buy a leather case if one ever comes out.
And I've already modded it, cut the hole bigger where the screen lock is, and made it big enough to open the microsd slot. Plus added velcro to keep the cover open when folding the flap all the way flat (so full screen-tablet mode).
Not the best job on the hole-cutting, but that would have bothered me not to be able to get to the sdcard.

I can't believe what a crap selection we have...

Been to Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, Staples, Target, Office Depot, Office Max and Walmart and am unable to find a reasonably priced case for my tab. Even the expensive ones are crap. The Targus Truss is widely available but too expensive for what it is and really not great at all. I can't remember all the other options I've man-handled in the past 48 hrs. At this point in my frustration, I'm looking for a generic zippered case that has a slightly hardened front and back cover (I realize it's just stiff cardboard). Ideally, I'm looking for black/dark (read not pink, yellow etc.) with edges slightly past the ends of tab. The closure doesn't matter (zippered, magnetic, velcro). There can be a bit of extra room if need be but not so much that the tab rattles around and causes imbalance in bag. A bit of protection from slight bumps or scratches would be nice but not something that can be flung across room. Currently my tab resides in a bubble padded mailing envelope that I can't recall who mailed to my house. Any ideas?
Yea I want a hot pink leather tight fitting.Acer case like but real quality
Gotta love hot pink
same size
Since its the same size of some of the others, how about looking on ebay? Its flooded with some for ones the same size.
I use a soft case that came with a laptop set. Has a Velcro strap in it, and it fits snug into it and enough spots for chargers, pad of paper, pens, etc. I'll try to update this with a pic later.
And its pink...lol
in thailand we do not have accessories...
so far just official case (and not easy to find)
no film protection for screen
have to wait one more month for get the cable very expensive
no spare part at all .... (better buy a new tablet than to repair it seems...)
and if wanna buy from amazon or else... 300% taxes... woOooow
and worst of it... not a lot of choices GENUINE
I want the TDP case... and a SCREEN SHIELD!!!

Kind of a shot in the dark as they don't give dimensions. If I get it, I'll probably cut out the net pocket.

I'm picking up my smart cover from PC world in a few hours daddy lent me the £19.99 till the weekend when I get paid lol
Not sure where u are but try PC world or curry's website (same shop really but ether site works as its the same site just different names) and if you not in UK try. evga.com
They have replacement styles there too
And eBay has scream protector's gorlor
The problem is I live in germany, so I can't go for newegg or pcworld
And while i would consider buying it for 30 (altough i think this is ALOT for a cover), 40+ postage to germany would be too much.
But thanks anyway for the ebay link, didn't find this myself, will keep an eye on it.

tegra note 7 Slide cover video review
Here is my video review and unboxing of my tegra note 7 Slide Covers for my tablets. Have had the slide covers for about a week now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlqzSDhDOG4&
I have two slide covers and for my third tablet will look for a third party case just to have something different. I am happy with the slide cover though.
I think Nvidia has changed the procedure wholesalers are releasing these tablet, in that the flap cover in already installed on the tablet. Example the EVGA I got today has the flap cover already installed.

There have been bundle deals in India and Japan where the cover had been sold with the tablet.

Yeah. I think that initially people had such trouble getting the flaps in that they maybe doing it wholesaler wide to install the flaps. Example people were scratching their cases, to breaking the flap pin and socket hinges, due to how tight the grip was.
I hope they're still including the small insert for when you're not using the cover... I don't care for that nasty edge left without anything in the slot. For the record, I insert and remove my cover frequently (I like it for protection but don't care for using the tablet with it on as it's harder to grip), and it does get easier, though I usually have to use something like fingernail clippers to remove the small insert, and that's caused a lot of little scratches in that area. It's a shame they used such a soft and cheap plastic for these things, but hey, you get what you pay for, and I'm definitely not complaining considering the punch this little $200 tablet packs. Now bring on the KitKat so I can fall in love all over again!
I really like the flap cover. Great to close it and your tablet goes into power saving mode.
Anyone tried other third party case ? Found one with an affordable price ($13 rather than $30) with complete protection on http://www.amazon.com/MiTab-Leather-Cover-Rotational-Nvidia/dp/B00GOQIODO/ . There are two 5-star reviews . What do you guys think about them?
Almost bought the original evga slide cover. It's double the price and the reviews said they are flimsy and not reliable. Found the third party case and canceled the original evga slide cover order straight away.
And one more thing, should I buy a screen protector? Or will the case alone do the trick?
I kind of like the cover, but it does feel a bit flimsy, and I'm not sure about the big silver 'Tegra Note' bit of detail. I've also had the holding pins ping out once already, and I've only had it a day!
Has anyone managed to get it working successfully at a shallow angle for typing too? The magnet system works fine for propping it up for watching movies etc, but if I try and use it in the 'wedge' configuration for typing, it just collapses with any pressure.
Update:
Found it in ebay uk for 30 now.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EVGA-Tegra-Note-7-Official-Genuine-Slide-Cover-Case-New-/151227559256
Still more then 40€ for a simple cover, but is seems like the only choice for now.

Indeed! I noticed that too straight away... it doesn't stay well in that "wedge" configuration. It works better if you stick it to the magnets closest to the hinge (there are two sets of magnets in the tablet), but it's still not that great.
I really want to like the cover, but I like to palm my tablet in one hand while walking around with it, and that annoying silver hinge is just too flappy and annoying. I think I'm just going to get a neoprene slip case to transport it around with.
Nice but very expensive... Anything around 10$?
Do all of these work OK with The Advent Vega..?

Cases for Umidigi Z Pro

Which cases are available at the moment? I think Umi Z cases fit?
Is there a 360° protection case with extra space in corners?

As far as I know, yes. Most sellers on Aliexpress indicate "for z/z pro".
Physical dimensions are similar AFAIK.
I use an apple 7+ case, cut the side for vol, power and top for headphone and fits fine, lots more choice just check 1st

Update.. just received the flip case. It provides all round protection on the edges.
The retail box on the "Z" case indicates for both Z Z Pro...
Pictures of the flip case attached.
Edit...
Unfortunately, the flip case came without the outside sleeve of the box. But I have seen somewhere that the label also says for Z/Z Pro.
I'm still waiting for my Z Pro to arrive. I don't own a Z currently but am sure they'll both fit the case.
Ebay has some cases.
I bought the case from ebay, you can search using this Hard Plastic Back Case For Umi Z/Umi Umidigi Z Pro Phone Protective Cover
It is pretty decent and slim.
This is one of the case, I'm using. Bought from Aliexpress, you should be able to buy from eBay as well.
It makes the phone look cooler but not much of a protection.
Has anyone found a rugged rubber style bumper case for the Z/Z Pro yet? I bought several cases and they are all rubbish at providing screen protection from a fall. I'm ideally looking for something like this which I used for 2 years on my OnePlus One. It has a nice rubber feel providing excellent grip and it has a raised bumper surround which protects the screen when the phone is placed screen down as well as providing solid shock absorption on all corners should the phone fall.
I really want to find something which will actually protect my new Z Pro!!
I've been searching as well. My conclusion is zilch.. Nothing will fit what you require. If only someone can design a bumper case that sits on the top edge of the unibody case, I doubt it would be effective given that slight amount of contact.
I would be happy to know too if anyone found that "perfect" bumper case.
Alternative I can think of now is to cut away the front of the S cover and use that bumper case. It's slightly better than the usual bumper case.
Just my opinion.
Cheers to all!

Having searched all the usual online stores (AliExpress, GeekBuying, Banggood etc) as well as eBay and Amazon I decided to try this iPhone 7 Plus case from Tudia which with some slight adaptation may do the job. I'll need to punch a hole on the top edge for the headphone jack (I plan to use a hole punch designed to make holes in leather belts) and I'll also need to trim/create space for the volume and power buttons which I plan to use a pinchers and/or a scalpel to shape and some sand paper to smooth out the finish.
That's the plan anyway!!!

Yeah.. I've come across others who mentioned they can modify the 7+ to accommodate the Umidigi.
All the best mate!

Just FYI my plan didn't work out as the 7+ case is too loose on the Z to give me confidence to use it everyday so I've donated it to a friend who has a 7+.
Anyone know of a rugged 7+ case which is a nice tight fit for the Z?

If the result is that the case is a loose fit on the Z Pro, unlikely you can find anything to suit your bill.
Personally, I think the internal dimensions are crucial for a good fit.
Looks like Vodaphone Smart 6 phone is same size and layout at the Z , cases appear to fit fine without any modification ..
