S20+ Exynos vs Snapdragon battery life test - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

Seems that the efficiency difference isn't so big after all. Less than an hour. Not too bad for the exynos this year. Samsung is definitely improving the exynos with every update. Waiting for custom roms/kernels for my exynos S20U. Should further improve battery life/performance..

There are various speed tests clearly showing the exynos is slower in day to day usage compared to snapdragon.
And then this, the battery life it worse, too.
However you say this is good. I don't get it, why do you seem to be happy with exynos when it's slower AND having shorter battery life?
And no, Samsung is not doing better, this year the gap between exynos and snapdragon is larger than ever. Last year they were closer.

The gap isn't too big for speed test too. 8 seconds? Not bad. Thought the gap would be much bigger for both battery and speed test, but it's not. Custom roms/kernels will definitely improve things further for the exynos. Even he said you won't notice any difference between the two variants in day to day use.

The big problem on exy is when you get out of home from wifi to mobile data on a trip. That eats the battery!

At the end of the day no matter what anyone says snap and exy are same price so we should be getting equal performance but no way exynos users have been shafted from battery usage to performance and camera

Note 2 vs. Note 1 in terms of temperature

Hi guys,
I currently own a Galaxy Note N7000, but am planning an upgrade. To the Note 2. Yay!
My Note gets really hot when playing games like Arcane Legends, especially if I plug in the charger (of course). Some times, it gets so hot that the top side of the screen burns my thumb!!! And that even when playing Arcane Legends alone, not charging at the same time!
I wanna know. Are there people who have owned the original Note and switched to the Note 2? If yes... those are the people I want to talk to. They know best how to compare the two.
Never had the N7000 but I can tell you that the N7100 never gets that hot. A little warm yes, hot no.

I wouldn't say it gets too hot, but if you play the right games it can get toasty. Not too shabby though. Any mobile device these days can get up there in temps. It is the nature of the beast. Getting smaller and more robust and trying to keep the temperature down is all part of the challenge. I wonder how well the a15/mod'ed a9's will run in the next year or two. Eager to see how well Samsung's exynos CPU pairs together with imagination technologies GPU. Exciting times for the android gamers as they might see more games and many of those ported from iOS or more time put into them. I really would like science to take advantage of our smartphone gpu's much like distributed networking on PC's.

I'm not gonna sit around and wait another year. I'll get the Note 2, as soon as I sell this Note. My alternatives are... the HTC One, which I doubt will shine development-wise, the Xperia Z which has poor speaker performance and cr*ppy screen and the S4, which will also suck development-wise.
Yeah, definetly not gonna sit around to wait for the A15-powered devices.
I hate my Note right now for the following :
- poor battery performance (despite its 2500 mAh battery)
- screen sucks so bad (plus, black clipping)
- overheating like hell
At least the first two are better on the Note 2 . Enough for me to upgrade.

If I play Arcane Legends over 3G for half an hour and both CPU cores are clocked at 1.4 GHz (maximum), my left thumb is gonna be prone to burns. No joke.

I am sure that the HTC One will get great dev development seeing as how that codeworx is getting the device, as for S4, it should also get great development as it is going to be a very popular device and most of the S4's are going to be Qualcomm not Exynos.

I had the Note 1 and now have the Note 2 and they are 2 different phones. The cpu on the Note 2 is much more powerfull and battery friendly than the one on the GN1. Temperatures are very good and haven`t experienced any heat issues. Switching over to the GN2 will only bring you advantages.

Oh yeah. At least the Qualcomm variant will definetly receive some love. Too bad Krait 300 is Cortex-A9, not Cortex-A15. But it's powerful enough. Way powerful than the cores in the Note 1, that's for sure.
*reconsidering options*
Won't have enough money for neither the One nor the S4. So, it's gonna be the Note 2. It's a powerful enough little tiny beast, anyway

Thank you for your input.
Battery life and power is exactly why I was considering the Note 2. Otherwise I could go for the S3, which has the same ammount of RAM (not really good for long term) and pretty much the same battery life as my Note. Not really worth paying 150 extra bucks for that... Better pay 200 extra bucks for a Note 2 :silly:
The screen is also an important factor for which I am considering the Note 2 over the S3. Screw pentile. RGB for the win!
Also, I know the Note 2 comes with a 2 amp charger. That's awesome! I will be able to play AND charge at the same time :silly:

How is that related to what is being discussed here?
Well, i had an n7100 which is on my mothers hands right now and i switched to the n7100.
The note 2 NEVER gets hot, like ever.. compared to the note1 which does get considerably hot when gaming.
Rest assured that you wont burn your thumb ever again with newer generation phones. Also, battery life on n7100 is brutal.

I have to admit I was tempted to go for the cold metal beauty of the One, but delayed deliveries to Polish carriers took that option away. And wasn't that impressed by the Z. Not regret it much. That large screen is just beautifull. Who needs FullHD when it's already so sharp and amazing. Seems to be the perfect size too. Well, put it in a case and it gets too big for me. But having the extra screen estate over the lesser phones really is great!
Was initially put off by the horrible look of TouchWiz (have been using CM on my Galaxy S for a long time), but after customizing it a bit (inspired by coldfustion YouTube videos), I'm pretty happy with the results. I now mostly only see the ugliness of TouchWiz during calls and sometimes in the dialer (when it appears from a system call, rather then is brought up manually). Guess I'll proably eventually get rid of that too with a custom ROM, but I'm not in a hurry.
Coming from Galaxy S, I can really appreciate the GPS speed and accuracy. The volume of the loudspeaker is also very nice, even if clarity is nothing to write home about. Browsing and reading/writing e-mails is a real pleasure on this beast!
It does get a bit warm during gaming sessions, but it doesn't seem very hot and I hope its nothing that can cause an actual burn!
The smoothness is not that amazing too me though. I guess partially because I use MultiPicture Live Wallpaper and it always reloads the wallpaper during switching landscape/portrait mode. The default lockscreen was laggy as hell too (tried various fixes suggested here). But I turned that off and am now using the lockscreen from Go Launcher Ex, which is much faster (well, actually that and some icon packs are the only functionalities of that launcher I use... otherwise it's way too laggy, especially compared with Nova). But I'm sure the speed can easily be fixed with a custom ROM.
Just wish I could scale the keyboard down, cause it wastes too much screen estate (using Swype). And Multiwindow... the menus take way too much space... it should scale the content down as well, because as things are, very little actual content is displayed in each window.
^ A little off topic, but just wanted to say that all your wishes can be fulfilled with a rooted stock rom and simplistic and or xposed frameworks, including theming and dpi change, when you're ready for it

Anandtech and their Snapdragon 835 comparison

Hey guys,
I just ended up reading Anandtech 's first look at the 835 processor. Its a work in progress as all they had were prototype 835s in the Qualcomm office but the results, to me, were surprising.
They had the Mate 9 listed in every chart, obviously because of the A73 and Kirin 960 being one of the latest processors.
Let me know if any of you are surprised by the results. And are you still happy with your Mate 9?
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11201/qualcomm-snapdragon-835-performance-preview
No surprise here. But not amazed by snapdragon at the moment. I'm really happy with Mate 9, no kidding. Performance, battery, design. Love everything on it. ?
I am not surprised about the SD835. I am disappointed with the Kirin960 and its power consumption either because 16nm FFC is not suitable for high-end SOCs or Huawei screwed up the design/implementation.
But I was suspicious about this when I was not getting the great battery life I should get of a 5'5" display with a 4000mAh ( i have the Pro ) and a supposed SOC more efficient than the Kirin 950 ( which turned out to be otherwise ).
I get tremendous battery life except when I... Play games. I mean, watching videos, 10-12 hours SOT. Mind you, I have 6GB/128GB version with "only" *1080p. I contemplated getting the pro, and I'm still watching one on swappa, but with a few exceptions here and there I live it. And I am surprised that it is right up there with the best of them. Thought the 835 and Adreno 540 would be miles ahead by now

The Adreno 540 is miles ahead of the GPU configuration of the Krin 960, it delivers more performance while the Kirin consumes more than twice the power.

Wow. Thanks for pointing out the piece. Impressed with Mate 9 performance in top 2-4 and many at the top spot. I do get amazing battery life with heavy use. On the 835 seems like a very incremental update, though I'm sure it will be tweaked up for production.

Even though in a benchmarking environment the 835 beats the kirin 960,i just watched a YouTube video of the galaxy s8 vs the regular p10. And the p10 is faster. Benchmarks tell you nothing about the real world performance of a phone. I'm very happy about the speed and battery life of this device. And it will keep me happy until the mate 11 arrives

The lag is Unreal

Anyone else phone just not smooth at all? I'm on latest 7.0 and my phone is so slow for a phone with these internals. I don't get it. Is there something I'm doing wrong. This phone all around has severally disappointed me. My edge is so slow that it makes the iPhone seem fast. What do I do? Seems like memory management is still poor and this processor was weak, I would have been happier with an 8 core exynos vs 4 core snap 821

Thanks for reply and suggestions! I've disabled a ton of stuff and it doesn't matter lol. I may trade this one in for an s8 or iPhone 7 plus. I really hate iPhones as I've had several of them and a ton of Android phones. The fact that we can't really mod this phone and run different ROMs made it dead on arrival. I guess I could try a different launcher again and maybe turn off all animations.

So no Note 7 refurb in the US? Wow that's weak. That article I saw was a bit misleading I guess. It made it seem like world wide they would sell. I'm sure the refurbs will probably land on eBay but that's a full price phone is rather lease. Well, here's to hoping the s8 and s8+ live up to the hype since other Android OEMs aren't technically iPhone killers. Samsung is but they definitely suck in everything but hardware...

S7 Edge has the 820, not the 821, even though the only difference between the 2 is like a 10% increase in performance due to slightly higher clock speeds in the cores & gpu. What you are experiencing man is typical Samsung lag due to all of the damn bloat on the device. I've been using a HTC 10 the past couple weeks that I bought from someone on Let Go for only $200 due to the misses breaking her Moto X Pure. I gave her my S7 Edge to use until she upgrades to the S8+ next month & was going to resume using my Edge then but nope not now! The 820 is very smooth & efficient on here with virtually no lag at all & also I'm fully rooted. Only thing I miss is using Samsung Pay & earning reward points but that's only a small sacrifice, besides I can still use Android Pay & while rooted too thanks to Magisk & if I need to return to stock for any reason I don't have to worry about no stupid KNOX crippling core features on the phone & driving down its resale value. My S7 Edge will be going up for sale!

Have you tried turning 2 of your cores off? I'm sure that would significantly help you with your extensive battery drainage.

Turn off 2 of 4 cores? That would make the lag even worse. With 4 cores this phones lag is horrible I couldn't imagine only using 2 cores ie power save etc lol.

Nah, I'm not rooting this phone unless I can run stock Android over Samsung's laggy POS rom. No point. I won't be suffering for long, I'll probably just give sprint this one back when s8 launches. This phone sucks.

If you put forth the effort to eliminate the constant issues you're having, because its possible, then you wouldn't be so stressed and irritated. If you're holding on to it for a while, why not tweak it instead of doing absolutely nothing. :cyclops:

Have you gone through and checked which apps could be causing the lag? (Facebook comes to mind)! I haven't rooted either and my phone has no lag. It's almost always some app that's draining resources.
The lag culprit has been found!!!
Just as I expected, the lag is do to thermal throttling. I get extremely low benchmark scores, like a little over half what I should be getting. Ran the benchmark programs with my phone in a cup of icewater.. My scores doubled.
I am on a S7 Edge 7.0 rooted android. How can I change my thermal throttling settings? Is there a script or a program to address this?
3D Mark Sling Shot Extreme Android benchmark test results:
No ice: 1549 (I got around this number every time without ice)
With ice: 2627

Developer option to fix laggggg.
I found an option in developer options that seems to help a lot. It is called do not keep activities. These seems to help keep the ui from clogging up with old worthless data which seems to slow android or at least samsung phones down to the point you have to reset them. I am typing right now like it's an iPhone. I have a galaxy s6 currently but I doubt it has changed. The developer options has to be enabled and if memory serves you tap 7 times on the software info so.ew here in the settings. I am sure it's easily found on the net. Hope this helps.

S10 plus exynos

Fingerprint **** ... battery life **** ..... jitters when going through UI **** ... worse camera/performance than snapdragon varient ****...
I paid the same amount as others with snapdragons..samsung are scumbags to be honest
Anyway i can swap this for a snapdragon one?
I totally agree with everything you said but at least our device is stable for daily use which I need for work. The snapdragon variant is only available in the US and China, all the rest of the world gets the exynos variant. But I'd suggest you to get sth. like the Oneplus 7 that also has the new UFS 3.0 storage if you are gonna make a move for a snapdragon 855 device.
I'd consider that myself, except it doesn't have wireless charging which I love, also no sdxc card slot.
You can swap it for anything, please do.
Agree on the fp and camera. The fp is horrendous and the camera is just not that ok. In good light is ok, but in low light the pics are just too noisy.
I am ok with the battery but again....the fp is plain bad.
I am too thinking of OP7pro or maybe P30 Pro. I don't know.. I don't think Note10 will be better than s10plus or actually Note9 (which I found it to be excellent and I regret I sold it for s10plus).
I know where you are coming from. Paying the same getting less. But to be honest, would you notice it in daily usage? I mean the phone is OP anyways. It is just such a beast.

Coming from the s8 I missed it at first. But having my Samsung gear s3 with me all the time I don't have the feeling missing the notification LED.
Don't go for the P30 Pro for well known and obvious reasons.
I have the exynos version and I don't have any of those issues. But I'm also rooted and running custom rom and tweaks and it's even faster
Coming from the Mate 20 Pro, apart from the camera and being able to charge from 0 to 100 in 45 minutes. The S10 plus leaves Huawei in the dust.
Mate 20 pro in screen fingerprint sensor was useless as titties on a bull . S10 plus fingerprint scanner is 90% accurate. Battery was good, but heavy drain apps like Facebook, slotomania , YouTube, would suck the life out of it.
3hrs of Facebook, 1 .30hr YouTube, 1 hour slotomania and other misc apps and calls...for example
Mate 20 pro i might of got 7hrs Sot.
S10 plus I get 10hrs
Seems that app management is far more intelligent with the S10 plus.
These are just basic observations.

Great Phone it is. I use the exynos Version. No problems at all..

Samsung finally getting the Bad Recognition they Deserve!

The Exynos version of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is being hammered with complaints!

Maybe Samsung should eat the loss before it gets worse? Replace all EXYNOS phones with Snapdragons? This turning into another Note7 Scandal!
The Exynos used in the global variant of the device lags behind the market competition.

LOL no way Samsung will do that. It's an inferior chip 4 sure, so don't buy it at all or return it. Samsung will automatically understand.
I love how people are completely losing their minds over a 5-10% performance and battery life difference. Are you earning your income from "professional" gaming on your phone or something? No? Didn't think so. Don't worry about it. Exynos models are ridiculously cheap, take better pictures, and are rootable unlike most Snapdragon models ??????

I happen live in the U.S. so I have the Superior Snapdragon chipset. Currently no issues with phone. I just feel bad for people that got shafted with Samsung's piece of S**t chipset.

I don’t play games and have not rooted for over 5 years ... but after 2 weeks using an Exynos S20 Ultra it’s the best Samsung phone I have ever owned.
Picture quality is excellent
I have never noticed a heat problem
I get 2 days battery life between charges
Yes, in benchmarks Exynos 990 is not as fast as SD865 but it’s more than fast enough
Also did anyone else read that Google are working with Samsung on custom CPU for future Pixels?
Manufacturers are fed up getting ripped off with high prices of Snapdragon CPUs
Better get used to non SD CPU in phones there are gonna be a lot more of them in the future!
One thing i will say tho, if Samsung saves money using Exynos chips in non US handsets they should pass the saving to loyal customers via a $100 lower price in the stores for Exynos variants (Or free Buds+ bundles etc)

That is true, but due to covid19 situation, we are still waiting for buds+ to be delivered.
Back on topic, after last update with april patch, exynos works great!

If I'm being completely honest. I dont game on my phone - i have my 2020 iPad Pro for that. I have heavily debloated the sh!t thats not needed on my S20 Ultra and my battery easily lasts me an entire day with around 30% remaining when i head to bed. The performance aspect means fcuk all to me because i dont use my phone to run resource intensive apps - hardcore apps like games, video editing etc. My battery life was absolute garbage when i first got the phone but over time, it's gotten a lot better. I'm not going to sit down and cry over a 5-10% difference between the SD and 990, theirs more important things going on in the world at the moment.

Fact is, people with exynos in their region are getting scammed. People with SnapDragon don't exist in a parallel universe! There is the same device in existence that's better then the other! Why? That's not ok.
Samsung should get sued for this scam. We should make a class action.
Still no news over the 512gb model of the s20 ultra , will it ever turn up , and with which chipset , cant find any news on that phone even with samsung still holding my 1500

i belive so too but not many people do
the issue is not everyone is a heavy user but the device faces issues even with medium use like video chat heating to 45C this isnt okay
i never regreted a purchase from samsung
i really want them to do something about it
i called their call center n all they offered was repairs n if the issue isnt fixed a replacement but we all know its a chipset issue so same **** again
at this point i dont know what to do
thing is i do notice that it overheats and throttles in gaming. i'd ordinarily be pissed right off. but i got the 16gb/512gb model (with warranty) for like £850 second hand as new. If i paid £1499 for it I would be seriously pissed off.
