Fire HD 10 2019/9th/Maverick -- Audio issues when using speakers only, NOT headphones - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my Fire HD 10 9th gen today and installed the Play Store with no problems.
I was hoping this would be a good "budget" device to replay the Ace Attorney games on while I'm in lockdown, but I'm having weird audio issues...
In two of the games ("Dual Destinies" and "Spirit of Justice"), the "bip-bip-bip" sound effect that plays whenever a character is speaking, only plays sporadically or not at all. The music also seems to hitch sometimes. However, as soon as I plug in a pair of headphones, all the audio issues stop. As soon as I unplug the headphones again, the audio issues are back!
My best guess is that there's some sort of audio post-processing... something going on to make the speakers sound better? But that doesn't get applied to the headphones? Does that sound plausible?
I'm not normally an Android person, so, so far I've tried:
- Lots of Googling
- Disabling the Dolby OEM app through ADB (com.dolby.daxservice), as it seemed a likely candidate, but it didn't make any difference
For now I'll make do with headphones, but I'd obviously love to have not paid £150 for a device with unusable speakers, so any advice you can give would be really appreciated.
Oh, I'm on Fire OS 7.3.1.2.

ETA: I've found a workaround -- if I connect a Bluetooth headset (in my case, AirPods Pro) and then disconnect it, the audio plays properly through the tablet speakers. However closing and re-launching the app breaks the workaround. So, not ideal.
ETA: 2 I haven't changed anything, but the workaround has now stopped working

You can reboot or reset your Fire tablet to factory defaults (before you start this. You have backup your important files to SD card or PC)
You have to use an audio isolation transformer to stop grounding.

Motorola HT820 + Trinity

Would the Motorola HT820 headphones work on Trinity?
They're working fine for me; the only tweak I did was to disable the JointStereo so I have proper stereo audio - there are a million threads about that around here, it's in the registry.
I have the SYN0948D model of the HT820, which I think is the newest, for previous ones there's a flash firmware update that may fix some skipping.
oh! Mind answering some questions for me?
How are they for music? Sound good? Any major problems? I use TCPMP for music.... will the controls work that are on the headphones themselves? How about the battery life (of the phone and the headphones?).
It seems the headphones also have a mic? Does that work with the phone?
Id appreciate if you could answer these for me... thanks!
The sound quality for music is certainly not what I'd call perfect.
Put it this way: I attached them using the supplied 2.5 -> 3.5 mil connector to my high-end audio card in my PC, and they sounded pretty good for headphones of their size.
However, when running over Bluetooth there is a noticeable drop in audio fidelity. I don't know whether to attribute that to the Trinity or to the headphones, but I suspect the Trinity. Maybe it's downmixing the audio?
There is a lot of A2DP tweaking you can do to find the best balance between audio quality and skipping/reception; I left it fairly close to the defaults for now, and I'll probably play with it more later.
The mic works with the phone and the audio quality for voice calling is outstanding. It sure makes a difference to hear a person in both ears - when I use them I almost never have to ask a person to repeat themselves. I haven't heard what anyone else sounds like when calling from the Ht820s, but friends say that they can hear a slight echo depending on the room I'm in. Makes sense because the room I usually call from is a smallish office/den with wood floors and lots of echoes.
I am going to fire up TCPMP right now to try to play a song with it. I've been using PocketMusic but it sucks balls...
Plays the song just fine, but it doesn't seem to support the next/prev track buttons at all. I tried to map them in the Hot Keys section, no dice.
PocketMusic and WMP both seem to work with the buttons, for what that's worth.
If you need anything else, just PM me like last time.
Yah I tried pocketmusic... it blows. I use tcpmp for everything. I suppose I can just use the controls on the phone itself.
I currently use the shure buds.... I hope Im not too used to the great quality ive been getting on them.

Really strange phono audio problem

Hi guys, I have noticed that the DHD has some issues with audio playing. I have noticed that sometimes, when using the HTC Music app and switching sound enhancements the app sometimes crashes, or audio stops completely forcing me to restart the device.
Also yesterday I was out driving for about 4 hours. I had Car Tunes app playing music and CoPilot Live 8 running for my SatNav, with the DHD plugged into my car audio using phono. I noticed that after unplugging and plugging in the audio cable, the audio would become very erratic. Car Tunes would always play audio full volume, but CoPilot (voice) would vary from being almost inaudible to full volume. This just seemed to happen randomly and would correct itself every now and again, then 'break' then 'fix' over and over.
On my way home yesterday the audio in both CoPilot and Car Tunes stopped working while plugged into phono. Audio is perfect without phono, but when phono is plugged in no audio can be heard. This is pretty strange as system sounds screen lock, volume adjust tone, etc. all work fine with phono plugged in.
I have noticed the sound enhancements crash bug with my 2 previous DHD devices as well as this one. One thing I have done to this is S-Off and BUZZ oc-uv 1.28 kernel.
Recap:
Yesterday while plugging phono in and out over and over (using satnav and leaving/re-entering car) audio would randomly become high/low in CoPilot only. Testing other music apps (to find satnav audio problem) found that Music app crashes/kills all audio/causes reboot of device when activating/chaing sound enhancement.
And now...
Phono out
- all sound works
Phono in
- no music audio (any app)
- no video audio (any app)
- no apps sound (Angry Birds, NFS game, etc)
- CoPilot voice OK
- system sounds OK
- if audio is playing before phono, when phono plugged in audio can be heard for split second
Has anybody else had issues like these? It doesnt seem to be a broken phono jack as some audio does come through it. I'm not up to speed with Android enough to know what handles different types of audio, or what could be the issue.
Does nobody else have any issue like this?
Could anybody who is up to speed with Android advise if this would be a corrupted system file of some description?
Well I didn't read all, but I think something is wrong when CoPilot is running...
On another day I was driving and playing music at same time, using the headset out to pluggin to my car. I needed to use GPS and start CoPilot. Selected a route and when the voice needed to say something the music simply was muted (or paused) ...
I didn't try too much cause CoPilot start to freeze my device and eventually I had to reset the phone with much difficulty...
Probably CoPilot is the culprit of all this
I have to try another gps program. Going to test Ndrive.
I miss so much iGO (it's not on sale for general users) and TomTom (not at all)
OK so another update on this.
Today I was out on another 5 hour journey and had CoPilot operating perfectly all day through my car audio (using phono). After around 3.5hrs of driving I got held up in very heavy traffic and was pretty much stationery so I decided to put on Youtube to pass the time with a few quick videos and noticed no audio was coming from it either so I used the volume buttons to make sure audio was at full.......turns out it was all the way down to mute!! This shouldnt have been as I always have youtube (and media volume in general) up to full. So I turn it up and it worked perfectly again. So I thought I would try my luck and test music....it was also now working flawlessly!!
This is really peculiar as I know I checked the volume of Car Tunes, HTC Music and Rockplayer numerous times each, before and after device reboots the other day when it wasnt working. It seems that all of a sudden the audio is now working again through phono, without any device reboots or reconfiguration of any kind.
One thing though.........I'm now back to having the high music / low CoPilot voice issue again.
Perhaps this may be some sort of CoPilot issue affecting audio on Android ?
Would love to hear some feedback or suggestions on this one lol

Fundamental audio buzzing problem with a brand new LG G3...unacceptable!

Hi all,
So I recently bought a new LG G3 - after having screen problems with the Oppo Find 7 - had the Oppo fully refunded, so was on the hunt for a new phone.
Bought the LG G3 instead - great phone (apart from the stupid button placement)...but there's a fundamental flaw with it - just sharing this here, to hear if anyone else has been testing it the way I have done in the video:
(Essentially the audio has a buzzing noise to it, when using the phone - this happens when you amplify the source)
I don't find it acceptable for a 2014 flagship phone to be like this.
I'm on the fence now to root it and/or flash another ROM OR just return it for a full refund - anyone else have any experience with different ROMs (ie 5.0 ROMs)?

That "beep beep" sound when connecting your audio jack appears to be unique to your device as I haven't seen any other G3 do that before.
Also, I stated in another thread about this issue, It only happens while the cpu is under load AND there is no audio.
Once the cpu load drops to idle the issue is gone.
Once there is audio playing the issue is gone too.
It's annoying while no audio is playing, But it's not gonna degrade your audio experience in any way what so ever when there is sound coming out of your phone.

Well that's odd, I've gotten others saying the beep beep is normal, but the buzzing isn't lol.
Out of interest, do you have the same issue?
And it's also a matter of principle, rather than it also being a fundamental flaw in the design. No flagship phone should have such an issue.
Whilst music is playing it's not noticeable at the levels I play it at, but at low volumes, and whilst using the phone at the same time, I can hear the problem. I'll retest tomorrow to make sure.
Not because I'm looking it for it, but because something doesn't sound 'right'in my music.
If it's CPU causing it, then is it linked somewhat to the kernel (ramp up and down of the CPU) or is it due to the placement or 'communication' it has to do within the phone (hardware problem)?
Mine does the Beep beep thing when i plug in my phone to the sound system at my work. It's done it on every ROM i have tried. The hissing, i haven't heard for a while though.
To be honest though, it is completely unacceptable it's not been sorted though yet.

When hearphones are plugged and there's no sound, you can hear a weird sound (especially when you touch the screen).
I also have a problem when I listen to music, sometimes the music has a little lag, a little buzzing for less than a second, as if the phone didn't have the time to load the music. It sounds like an old used CD. It happens once every ten minutes approximately. I don't know if it comes from the fact that I listen to music from my SD card, which isn't a very good card (64Gb, 20$ on amazon). I should test it from internal storage to check that...
Anyway, I'm using ChupaChups ROM and the problem you're talking about is also present. But Chupa Chups is a stock-like ROM, so this isn't a surprise.
I'm planning on installing CyanogenMod to see the difference.
I'll report back here after that

What hidden menu ? Dev options ?
ChupaChups ROM includes a mod which allows the processor to have an higher temperature (I think the original limit is 65°, the mod is set to 75°). The mod is supposed to erase this kind of issue.

Well it's not much of a "mod" - just a setting that you enable/disable:

Okay, thanks for the info.
I just installed CyanogenMod 12 (The ROM looks very stable, but I only got it 20 minutes ago so...). The first thing I tested was the issue we're talking about here... It's also present on Cyanogen ! The problem does not come from the Stock ROM !

Legend - seems hardware related (as initially thought)
Unless CM use the same stock kernel - highly doubt that though!
OK guys - went into O2 store in the UK - they had a G3 on display.
(It was plugged in) - I could hear a LOT of static noise on my earphones with the amp connected.
Then I unplugged it from the mains - the static went away.
I then did the same tests as before and boom - same issue.
It's 100% not my device only and is present in the international G3 version.
My LG G3 is being returned tomorrow. It's unacceptable.

OK so I did tests -
Without the micro USB cord connected:
Audio playing - 0% volume (thus you can't hear anything) - static noise, no HDD-esk noise
Audio playing - 1st notch (you can hear music faintly) - static noise, no HDD-esk noise
Audio not playing - HDD-esk noise
WITH the micro USB cord connected - charging:
Audio not playing - Louder static noise, minimal HDD-esk noise
Audio playing - 0% volume (thus you can't hear anything) - louder static noise, no HDD-esk noise
Audio playing - 1st notch (you can hear music faintly) - louder static noise, no HDD-esk noise

So, I have a set of Sennheiser HD 598, a pair of Monster DNA headphones and Sennheiser CX275S in-ear earphones (for Android smartphones).
When I connect the HD 598 and the Monster DNA to the phone directly. I get no noise.
But when I connect the CX275S, I get the noise.
Could it be something to do with the impedance/resistance of the headphones and/or cable that is being used?
However I am not using an amp. Do you get the noise without the amp? Have you tried a variety of headsets??

Yes it can be the impedance - however this doesn't apply when I connect the amp -as it is picking up more than the source usually shows.
In other words - you CX earphones could be more sensitive (which I find surprising vs the HD 598) - but if you were to put an amp - I think all of them would show.
I've tested with a bunch of earphones and my headphones - all of which showed the same problem with the amp.
I know for sure now it's to do with the phone - now if some people would notice it or not with their given setup is another thing.
ie. their setup might not reveal the flaw (ie if I had never put the amp - I wouldn't have heard the problem).
Also - I've noticed a audible "click" / "lag" when music was changing. making me say: "Yup 100% this phone is being sent back"
Can't believe I'm back to my SGS3. over 3yrs old - no problems and trumps these flagship phones in terms of audio quality.
Just to add my part, the "beep beep" is normal when connecting headphones. I usually get a very quiet buzzing noise when I have the phone connected to a power source and have headphones in. I'll report back in a week, getting a warranty replacement so may be different

excellent thanks for letting me know - why are you getting a replacement? (this issue?)
I've already packaged mine ready for an amazon return.
I decided to pull out all the earphones and speakers that I have. And here are the results.
1. LG earphones that came with the phone - no noise
2. Old Samsung Galaxy S2 earphones - no noise
3. Old iRiver earphones - no noise
4. Sennheiser HD 239 headphones - no noise
5. Bose Soundlink speakers in aux mode using a cable - at the highest 2 levels of volume I can hear the noise.
So it may be an amplification issue.
I am not sure that LG would accept the product back here in Australia if I tried to return it as there is no noise with the supplied earphones and any problems with amps would probably be out of their warranty terms.

Cracks on the top IR Blaster (the one used for Quick Remote not for the camera) and your bottom microphone. Its a know defect with the G3 and they'll replace the phone for free

Not an amp issue - I think I showed that by comparing multiple devices.
It's the fact the source doesn't like to be amplified - and when done so, shows these problems quite easily.
The source (LG G3 jack) doesn't seem to be isolated/shielded well - that's the issue. Therefore normally nothing happens, crank the source up a little and it fails miserably.
It's 100% down to LG here - I won't say it again, but I've returned the LG G3 now. I'm done with their crap implementation. How on earth they would have missed it is beyond me.
Reviewers also need to wake up when they do audio tests. Useless.

S8 Bluetooth audio distortion

UPDATE NOT fully solved.
Audio still really distorted and staticy in car (Honda Civic 2016, link to thread). For the JBL FLip3 speaker, here's my fix: In the S8 paired devices list, click the settings icon next to JBL Flip 3. Turn "Call audio" off. Test out music - it should sound clear now. Turn "Call audio" back on, the music still sounds clear.

Hi guys,
I am using an Australian Galaxy S8 SM-G950F, and a JBL Flip 3 portable bluetooth speaker.
I have noticed that when using the S8 with my speaker, the sound is distorted as if the treble frequencies are too high.
I can confirm portable speaker works fine with great sound using my previous phone (Galaxy S5). i paired both phones to the portable speaker and compared them together to see which caused the problem. I tested the exact same song, same quality, same app (Google Play Music) on the S8 and then the S5 and noticed the S8 sounded really bad and the S5 sounded great.
On my galaxy S8 I have not done any EQ or sound effects, I am really not sure why it is like this. I do use volume sync so my S8 volume controls the portable speaker volume.
Anyone else experiencing this? I also have the S8 inbuilt speaker fading/cutting out so I am definitely taking my phone back to get replaced. I just hope my replacement phone will not have the same bluetooth audio issue.
Same issue here. Specially when move away few meters from the speaker.
I guess it should be a software issue, due to Bluetooth 5 backward compatibility.
Australian here too. Havent noticed any bluetooth sound quality issues since coming from the s7 edge. I use BT in my car at least twice a day almost every single day so I think I'd notice.
I've got the same speaker at home though that I've yet to pair with this phone so I'll give it a go and compare the s7, s8 and maybe my laptop and see if I notice anything.
I work late so I'll have to check in a few hours when I finish. I'll keep you posted.
Edit: also don't forget that you can adjust and fine tune your equalizer to your liking in settings. Search for "Sound quality and effects". Might want to see if that helps at all.

I haven't adjusted EQ, I'm trying to avoid that - my S5 with flat EQ sounds great on the portable speaker so I'd like the S8 to do the same
Just in the meantime, have you tried to unpair and restart the pairing process? (Just for the sake of absolute clarity, I'm not talking about turning Bluetooth off and then back on again.) Go to your Bluetooth connection menu, click the setting gear icon next the JBL flip 3 and select Unpair and then try again. Worth a shot perhaps?

Just unpaired and re paired now, no improvement
Also turned off media volume sync (so the phone volume and JBL volume are separate), also no improvement
Alright I've had a good play around with the speaker for a bit now and I've tried swapping between my S7, Laptop and this S8+. I played the same song through Spotify on each.
Between s7 and s8 the difference is negligible if not non existent. The s8 and laptop are indistinguishable from each other, as in they're 100% identical to my ears. I was able to instantly swap devices with Spotify as well so I was able to do a lot of fast A-B testing on different parts of the track and there was no distinguishable difference.
The s8 BT sounds fine to my ears. No complaints.
That leads me to consider that;
1. Your phone may in fact be faulty
2. It could be the speaker itself causing issues, or
3. The s5 is actually the one that objectively "worse" or otherwise different. Perhaps you grew accustomed to the sound of the s5 and anything else would sound slightly off by comparison.
Also remember that the JBL flip 3, while nice, isn't a particularly high-end speaker. Its not exactly the best system to get a solid reference from. You might want to try some other BT peripherals such as a home theater system or headset or w/e other BT stuff you have on hand.

Same problem with my Bose QC30
Problem is solved when I reboot the phone, but appears again a few hours later. Very annoying

Are you using a gear or another wearable or smartwatch at the same time you are testing with your s8? If it is..that's your problem rigth there!!
Its a known issue..so we are out of luck!

Actually I do have a wearable paired! Completely forgot. Will delete all and try.
Yea, a wearable will cause treble distortion. Quite annoying actually.

Hi guys, no improvement I'm afraid
First I unpaired my fitness band (Xiaomi mi band 2)
No improvement
Then I uninstalled xiaomi mi fit app (it was watching my notifications)
No improvement
Then I unpaired all my Bluetooth devices (1 car and 1 laptop) so only JBL Flip 3 remains
Still no improvement. I am still hearing this distorted shrill treble sound which I don't hear from S5.
I will try the sound experience of my car via Bluetooth too.

I turned off "Call Audio" in paired device settings for the JBL then tested music
The shrill sound is gone, the music sounds the same as my S5!
I then turned Call Audio back on and music is still sounding good.
I made a phonecall, sounded normal, ended the phonecall and music still sounds good. Hope this lasts!
I am just going to investigate the JBL App because I remember I once switched the button settings there to get Google assistant working. I wonder if that's what caused the problem back then?
EDIT: I also paired my fitness band back and music is still good

Changed the JBL button function to voice assistant, music still good

Hi everyone, I'm having the exact same issue and unfortunately, none of the solutions here worked for me (tried disabling and re-enabling "call audio", tried unpairing my wearable, even tried unpairing everything else except for my car audio). I also just updated to Android Oreo hoping for a fix, but it didn't solve it...

Just updated to Oreo the other day and that's actually when I started having the problems. I've had this S8 Plus almost a year now, and everything sounded great until the update a few days ago.
The best way I can explain it is the audio, to me, sounds over saturated.
I mainly stream Spotify via bluetooth in my car - JVC head unit, JL in-doors, 1000w Kenwood amp and 2 Alpine SWS D12s. This setup used to sound pretty damn sweet, but post-update, it sounds like garbage and I can't figure it out.
This has been an issue with many newer phones and is related to the newer bluetooth protocols in the 2017+ flagship phones, it seems. I haven't been able to figure out a solution, yet, and I've been trying for over a year. I think that most car stereos and bluetooth speakers are still on the older bluetooth protocols, and that seems to be the underlying disconnect in all of this. If one uses the latest high end bluetooth headphones with support for aptx hd and such the sound is on a whole different level unlike it is paired with my sync based Ford entertainment system or similar.
This is a weird issue that I've also experienced. To me it seems like Samsung prioritises Apt-X bandwidth over the older bluetooth audio codecs, such as SBC - which is what a lot Bluetooth devices still use. In theory SBC is capable of 'sufficiently' good sound quality, but in my experience my S8 just sounds like garbage whenever there's any other than one device connected. I did a Bluetooth HCI log and confirmed that whenever the SBC procotol was being used, my phone would just set the quality to medium despite everything I tried.
What's odd now that is post-Oreo my sound has improved and a new HCI log shows that the majority of the time I'm getting the higher quality mode. Not sure if it's coincidental that I also reset my phone completely after Oreo, or whether Samsung has fixed something... who knows.
My advice is that if you're after good quality audio, either stay away from Bluetooth or buy Apt-X or even LDAC enabled equipment. It works flawlessly with the S8. Great in principle, but not exactly an option if you have an in-built stereo!

Does everyone have awful Bluetooth connection or is it just mine?

So I purchased some new JBL headphones black Friday. They work perfectly with everything but my Essential phone. Basically the audio cuts in and out less the 12" away. I listen to a lot of music and this is complete BS! Bluetooth in my car is sometimes sketchy and also on my Bose SoundLink Mini.
Do all of you have connection issues? Is it a firmware issue? I'm still on stock 7.1.1 with latest security patch.
P.S. All this happens on my wife's white one as wellwith same everything.
I have the same issue with multiple bluetooth audio devices on mine. Someone suggested turning off Bluetooth scanning in the location portion of the system settings but that did not fix it for me.
I'm on the Oreo beta.
The one thing turning off scanning DID fix for me in terms of Bluetooth issues was the constant disconnects I was seeing to my smart watch. That's stable now.
No issues with BT on my PH-1 with the numerous BT headphones i've used it with.
Currently using a Bose Soundlink OE and no complaints whatsoever.
Tried all Roms, stock and Oreo and BT audio is fine on my end.
After messing with the Bluetooth settings, I removed all devices and rebooted the phone as well. I paired the JBL and sure enough they work fine with no audio dropping. So I'm wondering if something is going on when I first initially pair the devices. I'm not a radio engineer, so I'm only guessing. It seems like it's not getting full handshake with the devices I first pair with. Only after I forget the device, reboot, the pair again will it have a good grip on the device.

I got a red OnePlus 5T and white Essential at the same time and on looks alone used the essential. I've had two black models previous to this. I went to the gym after syncing my BT headphones and the result was music that but out every .5 seconds. Needless to say, I wanted to kill myself. I tried deleting all devices, resyncing, restarting, nada. I immediately went to the OnePlus with no issues. The essential is such a good value proposition especially with regards to build quality but I'm running out of reasons to keep trying it, price aside.

I totally get that. I haven't had the Bluetooth issues any more. Unfortunately now it will randomly freeze up. So, I am actually thinking of selling mine and getting a OnePlus 5t.
Just want to add that i have my essential phone since Dec. Never had any Bluetooth issues.
I've also got the same problem, can't connect to my PC, my pebble does connect but I have to "forget device", rescan and repair it everytime I connect. It's very temperamental with my Bluetooth headset too
with the beta versions of the os under developer options you now see options for different bluetooth codecs including aptx. I believe it is still a grey area if essential has acquired the rights to include the aptx codec but if you are rooted you can sideload the aptx directly. Personally ive experienced no bluetooth issues using stenheiser hd-1 in ear headphones, bluetooth stereos and car adapters.
I'm having the same issue with my Essential phone and all bluetooth audio playback devices. If the phone is more than a foot away, it gets choppy. I don't have a workaround yet but will try some of the suggestions here.

The Bluetooth connectivity is not that great. I don't quite have the exact problem you describe, but range is pretty poor. For example, my Gear S3 Classic is about 6-7 meters away from me right now and I cannot connect to it via Bluetooth. I have to be closer. My Samsung S8+ (after some post-launch patches of course) could maintain the connection to about 10 meters away. My S7 easily did 15 meter radius. This is all comparison in the same physical space.
my BT stutters about once every 45 seconds or so, also in my 2011 Mazda 3, the names of the songs do not display up on the screen where they had with every other phone i have had paired.
BTW if you are thinking of buying a 2009-13 Mazda3 there is a 5 second BT audio delay while watching Youtube/ videos ... and it gets really annoying

Latency like that is perceptible on almost all phones and receivers... Your car is not special in that way...
Wanna see some really bad latency... Try playing a game on an emulator while using a Chromecast to your TV...
Here is a perfect example of how bad it is. I did a little test with my bluetooth speaker(it's nothing special, just an average bluetooth speaker, a few years old so not the latest bluetooth tech.)
I set the phone on the kitchen counter, connected and playing music on my speaker which is right next to it. I pick up the speaker and hold it to my chest, while I'm leaning against the counter, then turn around so my body is between the phone and speaker, it quits working. I spin back around, it works... As a comparison, i dug the old S6 out of a drawer, and it can play on the speaker with me holding the speaker the same way, spin around, and walk to the other end of my kitchen which is about 16ft and it keeps playing the whole time.
Same issue with bluetooth headphones, which led me to this awful issue. I'm a cyclist, and with the phone in my back pocket of my jersey, the headphones won't work.
Frustrated, today I unlocked and flashed back to the oldest stock software I could find... still doesn't work.

The only device I get a solid connection with is my Jabra Elite 65t headset (which happens to be BT 5.0 like the phone is). My Samsung gear and both of my cars have horrible connections. I believe there is a memory leak in the bluetooth stack because It'll get worse and worse, then I can clear it up temporarily by turning off bluetooth for about 30 seconds to 1 minute then turning it on again... then it'll tend to last until I reconnect again later.

If you are on 8.1 you can go into developer area and there are settings for BT connection type. You may be able.to get better results by changing from the default which is best effort to one that prioritizes connection quality. There are other settings as well. I haven't played with the settings because I'm not seeing issues.
Fixed mine
Disabled hd audio:aac in bluetooth device settings(for each headphones or device with that issue) and drop outs stopped i had them every 40sec for .5.
I have 4 different Bluetooth devices that all work perfect and all have 10+ meter range. I'm on the AICP rom and no problems at all.
