Downgrade from Lollipop to KitKat to Jelly Bean for Root to Lineage OS -Please Assist - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently received a Galaxy J7 over the Holidays which works fine as a daily driver with stock Android Oreo. However,it doesn't have NFC capabilities which means I can't utilize Google Pay at the register during this Global COVID-19 Pandemic to avoid having to touch the checkout keypad to enter the PIN. Also, the functionality in Android 5.0.1 Lollipop just doesn't compare to Android 8.0 and it'd be awesome to have Lineage OS 17.1 which is based on Android 10 Q for so many different reasons.
I recently found an old Galaxy S4 SGH-1337 jflteatt for AT&T - this phone does have NFC capabilities which is great, but has a locked bootloader as it is on Android Lollipop 5.0.1.
I started a Project to go from Android Lollipop 5.0.1 to Lineage OS 17.1 The aim is to downgrade from Android Lollipop 5.0.1 to Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 which has the unlocked I337UCUAMDB bootloader which I can then root and install Lineage OS 17.1 .
I was able to downgrade Android Lollipop 5.01 to Android KitKat by flashing the stock Android KitKat 4.4.2 firmware via Odin3 v3.12.
However, when I tried to flash the stock Android Jelly Bean I received the SW REV Check Fail Fused: 5 Binary: 1 and the below from Odin3 v3.12:

Thru researching online, it seems the error is caused because the firmware on the phone is newer than the firmware that is trying to be installed.
But that doesn't make sense as I was able to downgrade firmware from Android Lollipop 5.0.1 to Android KitKat 4.4.2. I'm not certain what I'm missing. I was able to find this video which seems to have the fix but I don't know the language and there's no download links for the files that are utilized.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance that you can provide as I've been working on this project for almost a week now and invested so many hours already into it and I believe I'm just so so close to success.
Thank you so much, and stay safe out there during these trying times.

your bootloader is preventing the downgrade.. afaik it won't be possible to revert back to 4.2.2, unbranded devices included.
also, i think 4.2.2 is pre-mendatory-knox. for that fact alone, i think the bootloader won't allow you to go below 4.4.2.
in general, at&t branded S4s are not the ones you want...

Thanks for your response, which is in line with the research that I've been doing. With this stock firmware, I can't downgrade past 4.4.2. Oh well... it seems the only option I have left is to buy an unlocked phone that already has the stock 4.2.2 firmware that I'm after. Only thing is, they all say "unlocked to work with any GSM carrier, not for CDMA carrier."
If I were to buy this phone, would it be possible to utilize on AT&T which is a CDMA carrier [the research I did said yes and no] and is it a guarantee that the Android 4.2.2 firmware would have either of the unlocked bootloaders: I337UCUAMDB / I337UCUAMDL that I should be able to root and install Lineage OS...

Regarding COVID-19, wear gloves as the J7 runs circles around the S4.
That said, if you really want a Galaxy S4, the best models available to you are as follows:
SGH-I9505G (Google Play US model)
SGH-I337M (Canada)
SGH-M919 (T-Mobile)
Under no circumstances would I recommend an AT&T model, nor would I recommend a Verizon model. Both carriers lock their bootloaders to prevent you from doing what you're attempting. However, developers here on XDA released Safestrap, a recovery that bypasses the locked bootloader by dedicating a portion of the device's internal storage to the Android system. In effect, you have two systems on the device.
AT&T uses GSM. Verizon used CDMA, but as of 2020 that may no longer be the case due to their 3G network being shut down. Regardless, it's unlikely you will find a device of the S4's vintage that hasn't been upgraded from Android 4.2.2. You would be better served looking for one of the recommended Galaxy S4 devices in the short list above or, even better, getting a newer device with an unlockable bootloader, like the Nexus 5X, Pixel, Pixel 2, or Pixel 3a.

Thank you for the listing of the phones, I'll definitely look into them if I can't obtain a 4.2.2 firmware S4. It's interesting that you mentioned Safetrap, as I definitely did focus on in while researching in the XDA forums and web due to the locked bootloader issue ...but everything I found said that it's not compatible with AOSP ROMs and is only compatible with TouchWiz ROMs.
Is Lineage OS an AOSP ROM... if so I can finally complete this project...but I'd like to be fully certain before I take that leap of faith.

LineageOS is based off of AOSP, so if Safestrap doesn't like it, then you know what not to get.

[Q] Grand 2 Duos in Brazil: model number SM-G7102T (not G7102)

Hello from Brazil to Grand 2 owners and developers!
I've just bought a Grand 2 Duos smartphone, to replace my Grand Duos (GT-I9082L) because of a broken screen. After reading many XDA posts on this phone, I found out that my model number is not the same mentioned here: mine is SM-G7102T, not SM-G7102. I guess "T" stands for "TV", as it has a digital TV receiver, with antenna and builtin app (see photo/screenshots attached).
I would like to try rooting my phone, but it seems dangerous to install @balliboxer's prerooted ROM, because of the different model number. Is there any safe way to test it? TV is not important, root access would be much more useful. But I'm afraid of bricking my phone with the custom ROM.
As it's a newly released phone, I couldn't even find its stock ROM on samfirmware.com or samsung-updates.com. Is there any way to backup my current firmware, so that I can restore if needed?
Can I help XDA members to find out some technical details about this specific model, so that balliboxer and other developers can assure if the custom ROMs can work with it?
-> UPDATED - April 1st (not April Fools!!): CF-ROOT file made for SM-G7102 works with SM-G7102T! Check this thread (thanks, chainfire!):

1) Install KIES on your desktop;
2) Plug your Grand 2 Duos (SM-G7102T) via USB cable;
3) When KIES recognizes device and it's version (SM-G7102T), it will automatically update with new firmware version that fix this problem. (Problem: Very slow to answer calls and to made new calls also to view contact list).
Thanks;

I have some issues on my smartphone. The battery is very hot and terminate so fast. The GPS is very slow to connect.
I need to upgrade to 4.4.4 or 5.0 (CM12). But I can´t lose TV function.
Can you help me?

Hi Thiago! I'll write in English, as the answer may be useful to people from other countries. I really don't know if there is GM-7102T in any other country, or if it's a Brazil-only version.
Everything works fine after rooting, including embedded TV. Unfortunately my phone broke some months ago, and I've changed to other model. So I think I can't help you with the other issues.
Francisco
Hi Francisco! Tks for response! I'll try to root too. But do you know if cm12 still works built in TV?

I don't know anything about CM12 on G7102T. I've used only a rooted stock ROM.
I guess TV won't work, as it requires specific software. But you can try it and reinstall original ROM back if it doesn't work.

ROOT newest 4.4.2 without tripping KNOX

Hi guys, now i can confirm that there is a possibility to root newest official Samsung 4.4.2 roms ( newer than 6 jul ) without tripping knox. I just did that to my phone today - s4 mini LTE - i9195.
Quick guide to do that. In this case i downloaded newest rom for Germany (DBT region) - NH5 from sammobile.
1. Flash your phone with this rom and turn it on.
2. Again run Odin 3.09 and as AP give kernel from older rom - NE6
3. Run phone, google towel root, install, make it rain.
4. Run odin and flash back to newest kernel that matches your rom, in this case - NH5.
6. Install SuperSU and enjoy your rooted phone with newest 4.4.2 kit kat with knox 0x0 !
Kernel for NH5 (DBT) for s4 mini:

You can do the same with different roms, just use this script to prepare kernel for flashing with odin:

Rooted Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9515
Thanks a lot for the write-up, lefti696!
For what it's worth, I successfully rooted the Samsung Galaxy S4 VE (GT-I9515) with the newest firmware (I9515XXU1ANI3), applying your strategy.
The steps I took were:
download the current and an older stock firmware (I9515XXU1ANI3 and I9515XXU1AND3, respectively),
extract the boot.img from both
convert them to .tar.md5 using Odin 3.07 by mkh.mourad you mentioned
flash the older bootloader (using Odin 3.09)
use towelroot
install superSU and verify using Root Checker
flash the new bootloader (using Odin 3.09)
For convenience, I've uploaded the Odin-compatible stock bootloaders I used here (can't link them as this is my first post on this forum):
The current one (I9515XXU1ANI3): https://mega.co.nz/#!cgECARKK!mVpGXgXTeHDiQpQCKrTimBHbxy1R067L3I51VtwsptY
The older one (I9515XXU1AND3): https://mega.co.nz/#!Zh1jVaJI!0yJ6aYqsFnXMwxRSN-GAqo8iKFS2YfVx6hHcCT0VYUI
Disclaimer: As I'm a beginner, I've already tripped the Knox counter before I used that strategy (flashed the bootloader you posted from the Galaxy S4 Mini), so I could not verify that this strategy doesn't trigger it. Logically, it should not trigger it.
Unfortunately, there currently seem to be no custom ROMs for the GT-I9515 as it's just a "value edition" with different touch screen, wifi, etc.
I have bought a used phone in germany, but the OS seems to be a France version:
PDA: I9195XXUCNK1 CSC: I9195OXXCNK1
It does not matter, I can use german language. But would I be able switch to a german ROM without affecting KNOW?
For first: I want to root to get access to SD card. So I stay on the currentl installed FW for first.
Thanks, Yours Simon

Sir,
If you flash stock firmware, no matter country, you will not have any problems with warranty or KNOX.
Just be carefully and do a backup before all.
Regards
Nice !
But too late for me,I have already 0x1.
Is there any option to revert this thing ?

Ok, I've checked with all distributors (3) and directly with Samsung Croatia and all off them had the same answer. Your warranty is void if you have KNOX tripped.
That doesn't mean all over EU is like in my banana country but just first check with everyone before you touch your KNOX flag.
KNOX warranty void was the reason why I bought LG G2 now and going to sell S4Mini. Enjoy guys and again, if you're planning to change the K-flag, check everything about warranty conditions in your country.
Hi,
Do you check Autore boot and F. Reset Time?
Thx

Knox warranty at this moment it is 0x0.

There are too many missing things so definitely it is not a bug of the rom - but dont know what could i do worng?

I am new in this rooting procedure so i accidentally root my galaxy grand 2 v4.3 using a wrong root procedure, then my galley application went not responding it says (com.sec.android.gallery3d is not responding). when i get root access i thought it may come back but suddenly it stays the same. so now i am wondering if it is possible to get back the gallery app by flashing a new rom in my device.

Hi all!
I just get a new grand 2, so i'm very noob. i hope u guys can help me to answer some questions below:
-First, My grand 2 is running 4.4.2 but i feel it is very hot. performance is poor in web browser.some lag when pull down notification panel. Stand by time is suck. With the same process, Moto G is much better and doesnt get hot.
So, is the problem related to Rom? if i downgrade to 4.3, will it be better? ( I heard that 4.4.2 rom is suck with many errors)
- Second, i just want to know that if i can run this Rom or not? Cause my grand 2 is totally "virgin". Will flashing this rom via Odin be ok?
Thks for answer and help !

Are you sure you are running stock Lollipop?
And are you sure it is a G900F?
Check in download mode what it says the model is

A lot of S5s are mislabelled - your device is the G900P

So i should download the firmware version for G900P andtry again
Yep, can't remember if Lollipop locks the bootloader on the G900P or not, but you should be able to 'upgrade' at least if it does
You must ALWAYS believe your phone's download screen model name

can i upgrade my firmware using samsung kies !!? which model i put ?
it says that it can not verify my model S/N
What ROM version is running on the phone at the minute?

Try the latest for the G900P with ODIN, see how you get on
Looks like whoever you bought it from, has either modded the build.prop to display G900F info, or manage to flash enough of a G900F ROM to show that info
I can flash a G900T ROM without the bootloader and modem, and it shows G900T on my phone, but the phone is G900F
Either way, if download mode says G900P, that's your model

If you flashed a stock Samsung ROM, whatever was done to your phone prior to flashing this ROM is the problem - if it says G900P in download mode, and G900F in About and on the sticker, someone had changed something in order to make it look like a G900F (Likely because they are more popular)
Google how to disable hands free activation, there are youtube videos and forum posts about it
i can not find the hotspot future !!!
under more network or anywhere else

Maybe it's not available for that ROM, the G900T firmware doesn't have Mobile Data toggle, but the G900F firmware does (Same phone)

s4 i9507 help

Ok I don't even know where to start. The s4 i9507 model is a specific model of the s4 released in Australia on optus network. From what I understand, it is the exact same phone as the s4 i9505. What I am trying to do is flash an unbranded ROM (xsa) for the i9505 onto the i9507. I downloaded the firmware from sammsmobile, but while trying to flash the phone it keeps coming up <ID:0/003> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/003> FAIL! (Auth).
I don't understand why this may be happening. I have rooted the phone, I have read other forums that suggest to wipe the phone altogether?
P.S please only helpful suggestions, I don't need anyone telling me it's not a good idea to flash a ROM that's meant for another version because the i9505 and i9507 are the exact same phone/specs.
Anyone?
Flash i9507 stock firmware.

So is the GT-I9515, yet ROMs from GT-I9505 don't work on it.
Anyway, your problem may be a result of a faulty USB connection or cable. In other words, father USB wants to try another woman's hole

There is no unbranded stock rom for the i9507. It was released specifically for optus australia and asia. So the only stock rom i can get still has the telco's logos on boot up and shut down, I did see if i could find the file to delete them but couldn't see it anywhere

The only helpful solution here is to flash a custom ROM. Attempting to install I9505 firmware on the I9507 will always fail as Odin compares the firmware to the device. Odin will refuse to install the firmware if there is a mismatch.

Funny you say that because odin recognizes the device as an i9505 not what it actually is (i9507)

And yet, Odin rejects it, meaning a mismatch. Ergo, Odin is doing its job and rejecting the ROM you're attempting to install. Therefore the only viable solution is to install a custom ROM.
Could u recomend one thats not full of bloatware? I tried cyanogenmod 13 and it was terrible

Well, I'd consider the entirety of Cyanogenmod to be bloatware since very little testing is done to the source code. However, if you believe Cyanogenmod to be bloatware, then you clearly want to install an AOSP ROM, as that's about as bloatware free as it gets.
If you want unbranded gt-i9507 the only available is the hk version. You can find the firmware here:
