I can't emphasis this enough if you care about games don't buy exynos s20 - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

Exynos S20 series is the worst flagship of 2020 for gaming, it's destroyed by last year's S10+. Don't buy this phone if you play games on your phone.

Gear VR vs Cardboard for VR movies with S8

So I bought an S8 and I am quite happy (my only complain is that the touchscreen is not as responsive as the HTC 10)
I tried it on my Fiit VR with AAA VR player and it went 100% full-screen + edges!!
Yes the picture quality is better than with the LCD of HTC 10, but not tremendously better.
I could buy a used Gear VR for S8 next month, though even used they don't come cheap (80$), so is there a better image quality than with a Fiit VR or any good Cardboard headset knowing in the end it's the same S8's screen that will play the movies?
Again it's for VR movies only that I ask, not for games

Poor gaming experience on my S10 plus (the snapdragon 855 variant)

Hello there,
I have the s10 plus (SD855 Variant, G9750 Of Hong Kong). It is supposed to run the high-graphics games smoothly but unfortunately that's not the case here. I have s9 plus (SD845) and it runs games like asphalt 9, pubg, modern combat 5 way better than the s10! also, I noticed I can't find the high quality setting in asphalt 9 unlike the s9 plus, I can run the game on high graphic settings! Do i have a problem with my device? Is it possible to have a GPU problem in a brand new device? I have reset the device and reinstalled the games again and turned the game launcher on beside setting the screen resolution to the full HD but non of the above mentioned methods seem to be working.
Any suggestions?
Yeah, something ain't right. I had no problem playing PUBG, Fortnite (Epic 30), and Asphalt 9. The phone barely heats up. Can you test them on a friend's Snapdragon S10?

What is comparable to Mi 9T specwise?

Hi all,
At the moment I have Xiaomi mi A2, and I am considering to get the Mi 9T as my new phone.
It would be in my opinion a better value upgrade as I would get NFC, AMOLED screen and all screen experience with the pop out camera.
However I was wondering what is comparable to the Mi 9T Specwise) as I mentioned NFC and AMOLED are a must and a bit smaller size than mi A2.
Pop out camera is not essential but would rather have that than the punch hole( like SG S10 or S10e)
Thanks in advance for comments and/or suggestions
Poco X2? To be fair, depending where you live, you won't get a better value phone than this. Any other phone with this specs would cost 20% to 30% more than the 9t. I purchased the phone 2 weeks ago and I have been loving it ever since. There are a couple of things I miss from my Poco F1, such as the high-end SoC, but the amoled display and the perfectly cut-out display (no holes or notches) make up for it.

Thanks for your reply. I was actually waiting to see the successor of Poco F1 and I was actually disappointed to see the specs as it has IPS and not AMOLED and no NFC which are a must for me.
Also Poco X2 is bigger than Mi A2 as well as Mi 9t ( I am looking for a smaller size device) I live in Ireland and have an option to go for Samsung S10 or S10e or even the new S20 line up) but as I decided years ago not to buy anything from mobile providers on a contract (contract not being the issue as they give you high end device and you pay it off during your contract).
It is after you have the phone the painful and slow process when you have an issue with your device and have to send it for repair. It's always your fault and not theirs.
For that reason I am always buying phones in a shop or online and not spending more than 300 EUR on it.

I actually prefer the midrange Snapdragon 730 above any highend soc because its plenty fast for daily use and very power efficient. This also means the phone doesnt get hot when gaming and therefore doesnt throttle at all ?

I play PUBG Mobile quite often, and let me tell you, you do miss the high-end SoC. The Adreno 618 can't push 60 fps at full resolution (I'm talking about the GFX tools that modify the game's graphics). My Poco F1 would never ever lag; its gpu is very powerful compared to the Adreno 618. Now, it is true that it doesn't overheat as much and it's more power efficient being a newer SoC. But if raw performance is a must for you, you should look for something with a Snapdragon 845 and above.

If you want a smaller sized device then you should go for the S10 or S10e. This Mi 9T is not small at all.

Sure the 845 is faster, but actually not that much... Looking at slingshot extreme 3.1 sustained performance the Snapdragon 730 scores about 3000 while the 845 scores about 3500. So when the 845 heats Up the gfx is only 16% faster.
I do not Play pubg on my mi 9t. If the gaming experience really is that much better on 845 im guessing pubg only hits the adreno gpu hard in short bursts -Or maybe pubg just isnt optimized.
People are diffrent and prioritizes diffrently. Personally I would never trade stellar battery life for relatively modest performance gains.

True. I don't game that much on my phone either, but sometimes I do. Years of being a pc gamer have spoiled me into not accepting anything fewer than 60 fps. Mind you, my Poco F1 was heavily modified. I even deleted the thermal files in vendor/etc so the phone would never throttle, no matter how hot it got. I really hoped there would be not much of a difference between the Adreno 630 and the 618. But there is. More than benchmarks it's the real-life usage and performance in games and apps. I play PUBG in the 9t with the exact same graphic settings from my Poco F1, and, while it sure as heck doesn't heat up as much and doesn't drain the battery as quickly, the Adreno 618 is almost always at 99% usage and maximum mhz (I use DevCheck app to check GPU usage during gaming). Sometimes it dips below 50 fps. What's more, whenever a grenade explodes nearby or you are inside a smoke the game lags as hell. This would never happen on my Poco F1. What's more, I used to brag to my friends about the SD 845 performance by maxing out all the settings in the GFX tool and showing them those graphics. The Poco F1 could sustain 45 to 60 fps with those settings. But my phone would get so stupidly hot that I couldn't play like that for more than 3 minutes (with the thermal files disabled, of course). I tried the same with this phone and well... let's just say that it's not very playable.
Anyhow, you sure are right about the tradeoff between efficiency and raw performance. This is why I have a 9T today.

I was comparing Mi 9T vs Mi A2 and comparing the size looks on tjhe paper that Mi 9T seems to be a tad bit smaller 156.7 x 74.3 x 8.8 mm (6.17 x 2.93 x 0.35 in) vs Mi A2 that I have and it's 158.7 x 75.4 x 7.3 mm.
I know it may not be that different in size and you are right that S10 or S10e are smaller especially S10e, even the normal Note 10 is smaller side by side as I compared those 3 samsung models side by side with my Mi A2, and while the camera setup is brilliant on all 3 the punch hole bugs me someway visually as it is visible on screen(maybe I am weird:cyclops and I am willing to risk that with Mi 9T and get a Gcam on it to get better (in some situations pictures) and It wont burn my pocket as Samsung would (buying direct in a shop not trough provider)
I think the Mi 9T Pro is the best value for money with around $100 over the Mi 9T. The Pro has SD855, but you wouldn't notice the difference in normal use, maybe just in gaming.

S10e upgrade

Hi guys,
Apologies if this is the wrong thread but wasn't sure where to post this.
Quick question....
I currently have the s10e. Is it worth upgrading to the note 10, s20 or s20+?
Main things for me are battery life, portability and performance, not bothered about the camera as I hardly ever use it.
Thanks

Just don't get the exynos version.. and get s20>note10
I have the snapdragon s20plus U1
It is fantastic all around.
Only "issue" is face id is not reliable enough and fingerprint is not as good as the 7 pro I came from but works well after you get the muscle memory down.
I had the s10e and hell yes s20 would be nice upgrade imo. 120hz is very nice.
I'd recommend the plus but the regular s20 wouldn't be as big a jump in size for you as the plus would be.
Attached the trade in value on Samsung site.
I got 600 for a pixel 4 I paid 400 for.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply Jason
The problem is that I'm in UK (London) so here we only have the exynos version. I'd have to import the Snapdragon version from a reputable website seller which I'll need to do research on
I kinda figured the s20 plus would be the sensible choice, but I keep thinking is the extra 500mah on the s20 plus worth the extra £100 from the regular s20

I also switched from the S10e. Yes, it's bigger but after a few days you'll get used to it. I got the exynos version because I live in Romania, but I do not recommend. It gets pretty hot and the games play better on s10e(real racing 3). Battery life it's better with 120hz display. Tomorrow I'll get the snapdragon and for a few days I will have them both. I opened a thread in "discussion" and I'll post the differences.
Maybe pixel 4xl for you then (do not get regular P4) or maybe a oneplus? I would not get the exy s20 for sure.
I mean....the s10e still good too.
If you're coming from an S10E SD855 version then it wont be worth it unless they make some improvements or if the issues currently bogging people down is software related and will be fixed eventually on the Exynos 990 versions. The SD865 versions of the S20 is pretty much solid from battery life to not heating up as much = in turn not thermal throttling which leads to low fps in games and maybe some hitching/chugging when browsing regularly. If its software related and they can make improvements on it then it wouldn't be so bad.
Portability and Battery sizes are as follows:
s10e
5.8"
3100mAh
note10
6.3"
3500mAh
s20
6.2"
4000mAh
s20+
6.7"
4500mAh
If you don't game, get the Exynos, no issues
If you are still on the fence, here are some things to consider:
1. S20 and S10e are the same width, but S20 is 7% taller (5.97 mm vs 5.60 mm) so you'll have to stretch a little more to reach S20 notification panel
2. S20 display is 7% larger (6.2" vs 5.8")
3. S20 screen pixel density is 29% higher (566 ppi vs 438 ppi)
4. Screen-to-body ratio. S20 88.6% vs S10e 83.4%. That doesn't sound like much difference, but you see the difference when placed side-by-side
5. S20 battery is 29% larger (4000 mAh vs 3100 mAh)
6. S20 has twice as much RAM (12 GB vs 6 GB)
7. S20 camera is better
8. S20 will be supported longer
9. S10e fingerprint reader is better
10. S10e has 3.5 mm audio jack

You're right I am still on the fence, but looking at the s20+ now because of the bigger battery
I know it'll be a wider which I'll have to deal with, the tallness doesn't bother me though as I can just swipe down anywhere on the screen to bring down notifications (Nova)
Battery lasting all day is an absolute must
Not bothered about the camera, never really take any pictures of anything
Performance is a big thing, needs to be snappy like this s10e
Will for sure miss the headphone Jack. I was actually just now looking at the LG V60, looks like a sick device especially with that day and a half battery life, but is just waaaay to big

There isn't much difference in size between S10e and S20. However, you *will* feel the difference in size between S10e and S20+. The S20+ is noticeably taller and a little wider.
The S20 and S20+ have the same basic specifications. With the S20+ you are essentially paying $200 more for 8% larger display, 13% larger battery, mmWave 5G, and a time-of-flight sensor. Other than that, they are the same phone.
I almost bought a S20, but ended up getting the S20+ primarily for the larger battery. I had a Note 10, and the S20+ battery is noticeably better. It has never dropped below 20% before bedtime.
I also use Nova Launcher, and I set all developer option animations to 0.3x, and Nova look & feel and scroll speed animations to "Faster than light", and the S20+ flies. Multitasking is silky-smooth with 12 GB RAM, no hiccups for freezes whatsoever. I don't play a lot of games, but the games I do have are loaded quickly and I have not noticed any stuttering.
I thought I'd miss the headphone jack with my Note 10, but I got Galaxy Buds and they sound pretty good. I have some USB adapters for my wired buds, but I rarely use them. The Galaxy Buds aren't audiophile-level quality, so if you are a hardcore audiophile, then you probably want to stick with a phone with a 3.5 mm port.
As I mentioned before, the under display fingerprint reader of the S20 is really disappointing. The S20+ scanner reads my FP about 70% of the time. I've rescanned my finger many times, and I also setup the same finger as a "secondary finger", and it still works only 70% of the time. My Note 10 had the same FP reader, and it sucked too. I started using face recognition and PIN on my Note 10, and I do the same on my S20+.
Other than the crappy FP reader and no 3.5 mm port, the S20+ is pretty much flawless imo. I don't miss my Note 10 at all (I rarely used the Spen). I am sure you will enjoy a S20 or S20+. But whether it is worth $1000/1200 (minus whatever you get for your S10e) is up to you.
