Clarity/resolution - OPPO Find X2 Real Life Review

The OPPO Find X2 has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Use PerfDog to measure how smooth the 120Hz screen of Find X2
OPPO Find X2 released some time ago, OPPO focused on the screen of
Find X2. One feature of the Find X2 screen is that it supports an ultra-high refresh rate of 120Hz. The
author also has a Find X2. I can easily perceive this in daily use The block screen brings a smooth and smooth experience,
and this article uses the frame rate data measured by the PerfDog mobile platform performance test software to let everyone know more intuitively how great the smooth screen experience of Find X2 is.
In order to more intuitively sense how smooth the 120Hz ultra-high refresh rate screen of Find X2 is, through PerfDog test software, I tested 4 software (desktop, settings, information, music) of ColorOS system, and 5 third-party software ( WeChat, Weibo, Netease News, Mobile Taobao, Netease Cloud Music) frame rate (FPS) when sliding. The test data sets two standards, one is very smooth standard FPS> = 90, one is extremely smooth standard FPS> = 115, the initial FPS> = 90 accounts for more than 90%, the UI interface refresh is smooth, FPS> = 115 The proportion is greater than 85% that the UI interface refresh is extremely smooth. Specific test data, please see below.
Before starting the test, we set the screen refresh rate of Find X2 to 120Hz and the resolution to intelligent switching.

Conclusion
According to PerfDog test data, this 120Hz ultra-high refresh rate screen of OPPO Find X2 does bring a great mobile screen sliding experience, regardless of the UI of system applications and third-party applications can be very smooth on this 120Hz screen Refresh, swipe, operate. However, we can also see that there is room for further optimization of the 120Hz full frame refresh in the UI refresh rate of the system application . If the system has any interface, such as: long message list, long song list, setting the first level menu to enter the second level menu, etc. Can achieve 120Hz refresh rate experience, then the smoothness of the mobile phone system will enter another height, of course, this may require more outstanding software and hardware support, such as faster memory, more powerful processors, AI blessing, etc. In third-party applications, it is not difficult to see that in the long picture stream, video stream and other interfaces, the refresh rate of the screen is difficult to reach 120Hz , which may be related to the speed of the mobile phone network. Ca n’t be loaded at high speed, the refresh rate of the screen is definitely affected. Thinking about the popularization of 5G network in the future, it is necessary for your mobile phone screen to support high refresh rate. By then, the high refresh rate screen plus 5G Internet speed, in the Weibo, short video, news, and other interfaces will definitely bring a smoother experience. In the era of 5G and the mobile phone SOC is very strong, it is a very far-sighted approach for mobile phone manufacturers to launch high refresh screen mobile phones. Last Friendly Tip: Use ItFind X2 this screen, when you switch back to the ordinary 60Hz screen you may not be very comfortable.
* Thanks to PerfDog for testing support.

EPD beautify gesture idea: thoughts?

I occasionally read a book or a longer text on the EPD of my YP2, usually with the YotaReader app. That works ok, but there's a small issue that annoys me: it's the jagged edges of the characters, which makes the appearance of the text less nice.
Yota uses a black & white only (2 color) mode of the EPD to provide maximum frames per second (8) without flashing, which allows for relatively smooth interaction with the EPD screen. The technique comes in handy when scrolling webpages, turning YotaReader pages without flickering, and many interactive screens, like navigating Apps in mirroring mode. By using dithering the 2 colors are used to simulate grey colors. This works great on pictures, but less well on text.
The EPD can also draw in 16 colors, which is used for the Yota panels screens, and e.g. the YotaSnap picture viewer. With 16 colors, it provides far nicer quality than the 2 color mode, at the expense of slower drawing, extra flashing and no interactive scrolling etc.
Here's an example of the difference in quality between 2 and 16 colors:
2 colors (with dithering):

}
16 colors (possibly also with dithering, but less obvious):
(The 16 color photo is a bit blurry, both are actual photos of the screen taken with a cheap macro filter)
Text rendered in 16 colors looks much prettier. I'd like to be able to read a book like that!
I've been thinking for a while about a gesture (like a 3 or 4 finger tap) that would allow the current 2 color screen contents to be re-rendered at 16 colors. So imagine browsing a web page on the EPD, or reading a book and when you're done scrolling/turning a page to a location you actually want to read or look at for longer, you'd make the gesture and the screen would 'beautify' itself into 16 colors. You could not interact with it smoothly anymore at that point, but reading or showing pictures etc would be nicer. Maybe it would be possible to flash the screen and return to 2 color mode when starting to scroll again etc.
Not sure how to go about this, but using xposed it would be possible to hook into the JNI calls that ultimately dither and draw stuff onto the back screen, or maybe at a higher level like the backscreen manager.
There are alternatives, like adapting FBReader for the EPD, with optional 16 color mode, but the gesture solution could in theory apply to anything on the screen, not just a reader app.
Anyone interested to help dig into this?
I like this idea, but I don't have the time to work on this.
What you are looking for, though, is changing the waveform from one to another: http://mwiki.yotaphone.com/wiki/Waveforms
The class EinkUtils inside the SDK has a lot of interesting methods which are responsible for updating the screen. Maybe using xposed one could switch the waveform on the fly when one of those methods are called, or even do a manual refresh with the desired waveform.

Ok! Thanks for the pointer. (I know about waveforms and update modes, but thought it was a bit too technical for a post to gauge interest in such a feature in the YotaPhone General forum.)
My time is limited too, I'll see if I can manage some experiments.

I wonder if the use of xposed is even necessary? Maybe it would be possible to create some service which would listen for some event, maybe volume up button or something, and that would just refresh the whole screen using the most detailed waveform. Not sure if this is possible, as at least the partial refresh functions wanted a reference to a specific view which is to be updated.. I don't have the API/SDK at hand right now, but one would think that there is some static function for updating the entire screen.
the backscreen framebuffer always contains a 16grey bitmap, so I fooled around with the epd sysfs interface (/sys/kernel/epd) to re-render the screen with different parameters, but no definite success so far. I can flash the screen that way and make it redraw, but not with 16 cols. For activation I was going to snoop how e.g. three finger tap is handled (configurable for sleeping) probably in windowmanager class. (not near a pc right now either).
Using the EPD kernel interface you can make the screen update like this, but it doesn't seem to actually change the waveform/number of colors.
[email protected]:/ # echo 2 > /sys/kernel/epd/waveform
[email protected]:/ # echo 51 > /sys/kernel/epd/update_mode
[email protected]:/ # echo 1 > /sys/kernel/epd/updateImage
The update modes:
UPD_INIT 50
UPD_FULL 51
UPD_FULL_AREA 52
UPD_PART 53
UPD_PART_AREA 54
The waveforms:
WF_MODE_INIT 0
WF_MODE_DU 1
WF_MODE_GC16 2
WF_MODE_GL16 3
WF_MODE_GLR16 4
WF_MODE_GLD16 5

So what it does in practice is it draws each view using its own waveform, which makes sense. According to wiki the default waveform for a view is A2, which is black and white.
There is a method called EinkUtils.setViewWaveform(anyView, waveform) which can be used to set the waveform for any given view, and that is what needs to be overridden before calling refresh. That sounds like a job for xposed. Maybe the constant of WAVEFORM_A2 could be momentarily switched to WAVEFORM_GC_FULL and back or something? Then the individual views could remain untouched.

The Best of ColorOS 12.1 Smart Technology

While many users of the OPPO Find X5 Pro are enjoying the new ColorOS 12.1 experience, some people might not know just how powerful and effective some of the included tools can be. Certain areas of the user experience have received a strong focus on improvement. This can particularly be found with efficiency features, audio/visual experience, and safety. In this thread, I'm going to go over many different aspects of ColorOS 12.1, which will let you be a power user.
Smart and EfficientMulti-screen connect
Everyone shares the load of work and play between their smartphone and computer. OPPO is always looking for ways to make the connection between these two devices simpler. With Multi-Screen Connect, you can sync notifications, files, and the clipboard, across the two devices. This means that when you switch to your pc, you can set your phone down and not bother checking it for any incoming notifications.
This feature is especially useful for anyone that does productivity work on both their mobile and PC. A more unified experience with the two devices means fewer distractions and an easier workflow.
Tip: The most effective way to take advantage of Multi-screen connect is with wireless file transfer. Use the 256GB of storage on the OPPO Find X5 Pro as a backup drive for all of your work documents.

Flexdrop 2.0
It took me a while before I got the hang of the split-screen type feature on my OPPO Find X5 Pro. Flexdrop 2.0 offers split-screen and floating windows. Both of these types of multitasking environments can be adjusted as you see fit.
To get started with Flexdrop 2.0, go to the Special features menu in the settings. Here you’ll be able to change the settings for Flexible windows and Smart Sidebar. Both of these play a role in your ideal Flexdrop 2.0 setup.
Tip: The best Flexdrop 2.0 configuration
Smart Sidebar - Toggle on
Show app names - Toggle off
Button free Flexible windows - Toggle on
Quick-hide windows in-game - Toggle on
This is the most distraction-free and easiest way to take advantage of Flexdrop 2.0.
Air Gesture
As a new feature in ColorOS 12.1, the goal of Air Gestures is simple. This lets you scroll through websites and apps with the flip of your hard. You can also control incoming calls with air gestures, but I think very few people will actually use that.
Turn on Air Gestures and go through the tutorial. Once you’re all set up, you can scroll through apps without physically interacting with your phone.
Tip: Use Air Gestures to scroll through TikTok. Prop your phone up at an angle when you’re at your work desk, then casually flip through videos without touching your phone.
Adaptive Sleep
If you’re tired of your screen dimming or shutting off when you’re trying to read something, enable the Adaptive Sleep feature. This feature uses access to your camera to detect when you’re looking at your screen. Your screen will no longer shut off when you don’t interact with it, as long as you’re looking at your device.
Tip: Use adaptive sleep for long meetings, so you avoid audible screen touches or button presses through your microphone.
Audio/Visual/Physical experienceColor Vision Enhancement
Color Vision Enhancement is much more than just a higher color saturation of your display. This settings menu lets you test different color filters to find the best visual setup.
Tip: Take the color vision test to determine which color settings are the best for you.
O-Haptics
The revamped user experience extends to the physical feedback that you get from your phone as well. Equipped with the most powerful vibration motor in any phone, the OPPO Find X5 Pro is the perfect device to take advantage of the O-Haptics settings. You can adjust the way your haptics feel with an intensity slider.
Tip: Set “How touches feel” to Crisp or Gentle to further customize the feel.
Binaural Recording
A more immersive and realistic audio result will be paired with your videos when you shoot video on the OPPO Find X5 Pro. Expect clearer vocals and less background noise intrusion when you watch your footage back.
Tip: Turn on Smart mode in Audio effects if you use digital zoom when you film. This mode can focus the recorded audio on your subject as you zoom in on it.
For an experience that merges all of the new audio, visual, and physical enhancements, try O-relax. This included app contains many different relaxing ambient sounds, visual stress releases, and world immersion using O-Haptics.
Tip: Explore the Alien World in O-Relax for a very interesting look at an impressive display of all of these features in one place.
Safety and PrivacyPrivacy Control
ColorOS is known for implementing some powerful privacy tools. Use these tools to control access to apps, permissions, camera/microphone, and more. You can even set up an entirely fresh system with System cloner, or hide specific apps that you don’t want others to see.
Tip: Regularly check your Privacy dashboard, to see which apps are using sensitive permissions like camera, location, and microphone.
Accessibility
Smartphones are always including more accessibility options that make these devices easier to use for more people. Check out the large number of options that are listed in the accessibility setting menu.
Tip: Toggle on Amplify speech volume, to really boost the max volume of text-to-speech features when you’re in loud environments.
Use these features to maximize your usage of ColorOS 12.1, and use your OPPO Find X5 Pro to its full extent. If you have more ColorOS tips or questions about these features, leave a comment in this thread.
