S20 vs S20+ (ToF) - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

Hi to everybody,
I would like to pre-order a new S20, but I am undecided between S20 and S20+ (I discard S20 Ultra, because of size and weight).
I would prefer a smaller and lighter phone, don't care about having a huge display. The difference between S20 and S20+ are screen size, battery and ToF sensor. About the last feature, I would like to know what I really miss if I get the smaller S20. Does ToF sensor affect camera picture quality? I don't know very much about it, just that it is used to measure distances. I care about the camera features and photo quality, so my questions are: Does S20+ take better pictures than S20 because of ToF? What's the real advantage of having a ToF sensor?
Thanks a lot

ToF helps a lot with portrait photos.

Google:
The 3D Depth Camera is a Time of Flight (ToF) camera on (new/upcoming phones) that can judge depth and distance to take your photography to new levels. It uses the known speed of light to measure distance, effectively counting the amount of time it takes for a reflected beam of light to return to the camera sensor.
Also Samsung/Google:
ToF Camera is used with Live focus video and Quick Measure, letting you add more creative flair and get information in a way you've never seen before.
In the case of Live focus video, you're now able to blur out the background in real time as you take a video, adding a brand new vibe to your movies. You can even swap between foreground and background focus with ease, to switch up the focus with a tap. Live focus video is available on both the front and rear cameras, so simply open the Camera app and swipe to Live focus video to try your hand at movie direction.
With Quick Measure, the camera acts as a 3D camera, judging width, height, area, volume, and more when you put an object in frame. Quick Measure is a preloaded app on Galaxy S10 5G and Note10+ (etc, and soon S20s), so open the app and put an object in focus to get a real-time measurement right on your screen.
*The Quick Measure app is separate from the Camera app.
Cheers

Of course it can but ToF helps with the edge detection.

Even pixel 3 has a single camera it will take great portraits. With the help of TOF camera, the subjects stays clear and the edge detection will be better.

Another difference is that the regular S20 has a more limited 5G. It won't be able to support the fastest speeds. You might not care about that either, but it could affect the resale value specially in a few years when 5G is the standard.

Nope.
"The Galaxy S20 only supports sub-6GHz 5G, while the S20+ and S20 Ultra add millimeter-wave (mmWave) to the mix. Sub-6GHz 5G offers better coverage and can penetrate through buildings better than mmWave, but it's slower and has higher latency. That means if you want the fastest speeds in the most places, you'll want to opt for the Galaxy S20+ or the S20 Ultra. "

Thanks, it's worded differently on other sites where they mention you'll only need the Sub-6GHz band since it's much more likely you'll connect to that versus the mmWave.

Mate 9 Pro vs S7 edge

Fellow XDA members check out my video comparison of the Huawei Mate 9 Pro and the Samsung galaxy s7 edge, you will be surprised, Mod Edit
Anyone else prefer the s7 edge over the Mate 9 Pro?
Since we're discussing the Mate 9 as well (vs Mate 9 Pro), i'll re-add the comments i previously deleted. Chose the Mate 9 over S7E due to (a) battery life, (b) preference for flat (or much less of a curved) screen and (c) big screen with good form factor. S7E served me well for 8 months. I'm not a fan of the S7E's curved screen, but the Note 7 curved screen was doable. With the Note 7 "evaporating" from the smartphone scene, (for me) there were no viable alternatives until i saw/fondled the Mate 9. i've made a few compromises to use the Mate 9 (vs the S7E) such as opting for the FHD vs QHD screen, better camera on S7E, etc. (for me) Mate 9 offers best form/function capabilities, camera will support my use/needs and the compromises i've accepted (in my opinion) are not show stoppers. did i mention that, with the addition of an active stylus, i can manage my Note 7 withdrawal symptoms until the international version of the Note 8 is available? finally, i cut the cord with my S7E when i gave it to my wife as her "yearly" upgrade until the S8 is available for her.

Nope. Sold my S7E for Mate 9 and never looked back. Mate 9 is superior against S7 family in every way, except one. Waterproof.

In good and "normal" light Mate has much better dynamics and colors are more natural. I don't like how much S7 is sharpening the pictures and you can see it by zooming the picture.
In really dark situations S7 takes better pictures (f1.7 is able to gather more light than f2.2) but Mate's monochrome sensor gives additional boost to Mate. So in overall I would rate Mate and S7 pictures pretty close, but slight edge on S7 side in dark.
But Mate camera is more capable with all different modes (Leica colors, light trails, monochrome sensor etc.) so in overall Mate is better in camera area.
This is my personal opinion and I have used S7 Edge 6 months before buying Mate.

I have noticed that it depends of the darkness. In really dark situations, without any light, S7 Edge is superior against Mate. But then again, I don't usually take that kind of shots with my phone.
Mate 9 starts to shine if there is some kind of a light source in picture

Beside low light, I think laser focus is still inconsistent & slow compare with S7 dual pixel focus.. It makes alot difference when capturing kids..

so what it the meaning to root XD, only to greenify? or tasker?
Both take sh**ty pictures in low light, even if one is slightly better than the other, its still sh**ty. But I digress, I switched from S7E to Mate 9 purely because apps launch quicker, longer battery life, Leica optics, flat screen, and that super charge tho!
Just bought mate 9 to replace s7e, gonna miss the awesome dac and ip68 rating as well as dual pixel focus but the m9 is much better in terms of speed, battery big beautiful IPS screen, slightly better camera in normal light, crazy fast and doesn't throttle on gaming due to no DVFS like in sammy phones....
Still evaluating the M9, but it seems a big keeper, now as for DAC it serves mine Sennihizer Momentum HP well.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good usb DAC?

Agree but either way those good low light pictures are not that great
Got a burned pixel on my s7E after just 2 months, switched to Mate 9 pro. I was already impressed by the P9 but the LON exceeded my expectations, the Leica is sublime, the design is way more better than that of the S7E. Graphic performance are less impressive but there's a feeling of strength combined to the smooth and fluidity that makes the Huwaei machine better in my opinion. Sound output and battery life are also better on my LON.

Redmi note 7 Vs 7 pro? Real camera advantages?

Hello, I am really in doubt on which one to buy. My real interest is about the camera : I haven't found a single comparison between the Samsung and the Sony cameras of the two devices. Do the photos of the pro version really justify the 100+$ of difference and the missing b20 band? Right now I have a redm note 3 Pro and it's perfect for my everyday needs, so a super SoC or a lot of ram would probably be wasted as I don't play at all with my phone. Any advice? Thanks!

I'm also curious. I watched hundereds of comparisons and from what i understood the sony sensor offers better dynamic range and sharpness. Depth of field (background blur) is same due to same sensor size.
By not a higher margin btw.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Did Samsung improve the shutter speed on Note10+?? When I had the S10+ the still photos looked great, however it was hard to get a picture of my daughter(18mo old) that didn't look blurry
I spent a couple of days doing camera comparisons with my Pixel 3 XL, which I sent back on Friday (got my Note 10 on Wednesday). I found that I personally like the photos in daylight better from the Note 10, as they look just a bit more "punchy" and clear to me, but that's Samsung applying a deeper saturation and more sharpening. YMMV on that. Early reviews I read online said that it was on par with the Pixel 3 in daylight, but quickly fell apart in low light. I'm happy to report that wasn't my experience at all. Night mode works great, and while it would be nice to have an indicator of how long to hold it, it seems to be just as fast at the Pixel 3. The Pixel 3 did beat it out just a bit with clarity, but not by a very wide margin. I did some blind comparison test between shots from the Note 10 and the Pixel 3 XL with my girlfriend (who has a Pixel 3 XL of her own), and 9 of the 11 shots she picked were the Note 10 shots over the Pixel 3. She prefered the Pixel 3's selfie shot and it's Night Sight shot, but she said she really couldn't tell much of a difference in them.
Aside from quality, I like different Live Focus backgrounds, and being able to swipe up from a corner on the lockscreen to get to the camera is a huge plus for me. It's much faster for me to go from pocket to shot now. I'm going to a convention this weekend, so I expect to get some good use out of the triple cameras too. All in all, I'm beyond happy with the Note 10 camera, and coming from the Pixel 3 XL, I was very concerned, as that was hands down the best camera on a phone I'd ever used. The Note 10 isn't leaps and bounds better, but it is better, in my opinion.
As much as I like Note 10, camera is crap compared to Pixel 3. I've been shooting all day and most images are near useless if subject is moving, automatic in anything less then ideal conditions is also terrible, and can only be improved with Pro mode. Faces are too white and details are all washed out. I had exactly the same results with S10 that I returned
I am not sure what Samsung is thinking. Big company and great hardware, $1000 phone, yet software is not good and photos are behind even Pixel 1
Ps. I am leaning towards keeping the phone anyway and will give Gcam a try
Note 10+ Night Camera is really crap compared to the Pixel phone.... Ugh... Samsung again with their bs

No they haven't. I had a good hands on with the device at their stores and took my kids to just specially test this out.
I sold my S10 plus for this very reason and unfortunately in the Note note 10, they still haven't sorted it out. I had a Galaxy Note 8 and that was the last Samsung without this issue. I think it's something to do with the dual aperture.
Installing Gcam seems to help a lot but I have Exynos chip and doesn't get ported very well.
You have to use Pro mode in order to get anything useful with moving subject. Or Gcam maybe, I haven't tried yet
Daylight shots are very good though, I would say even better then Pixel

Same thing here with my wife's S10e. Since my S7 I hate this. Nowadays I have an iPhone Xr and this is not a problem, fortunately... But I'd like to go back to Android again... Maybe with Pixel 4...
Using pro mode on S10e I've got a nice result setting the shutter speed at least at 1/250. But you lose performance on HDR... So it's like a short sheet... You cover something and uncover other...
That's another mess, the pro mode.
On my note 8, i chose to keep a fast shutter speed and my preferred white balance with iso as a shortcut on home screen. This way it allowed me to directly jump into 3 of my preferred pro mode setting directly without fiddling and adjusting, but as always, Samsung had to take a damn step back and removed this shortcut starting from note 9.
Hmmmnnn. I had a note 8, and all the others besides the 9. Any of them, like any other cameras I have used(cameras and camcorders), with the faster shutter speeds, I always use manual(or as Samsung likes to call pro). I guess most of my subjects when I learned were really fast(rc helicopters doing aerobatics and saltwater reef tanks), so the old rule of 'learn manual shooting first and don't rely on auto' saved me.
Neither of those environments are ideal, and i learned to just 'make' the cameras work for me. It's not a fault of the devices, it's just the honest inherent nature of auto mode.. I also love macro photography, so that is another realm in which manual knowledge is key..

The portrait mood has bee the single most disappointing feature for me, perhaps we are spoiled by the gcam quality, but samsung could have done better.
Having an Exynos device makes it even more challenging to find a stable fully functional gcam.
I am almost inclining towards finding a pixel (2/3a or 3) just for camera capabilities.
Even the poco with it's xiaomi camera did a better job at portraits

Portrait is very good as far as i'm concerned. Maybe malfunctionning device ? I have exynos as well and no pb with photos (EDIT : i have Note 10 Plus though so maybe TOF does the job).
My portait photos are probably the most striking and accurate i ever took with a smartphone, i have very nice pics of my kids taken with it.
Single hairs on sides are not blurred either, it only blurs the background and does it right.
I am very disappointed with cameras .
Low definition and quality when you do not have 100% of light .
Night mode it **** also.

I compared with OP7 and found that Note 10 (Exynos) is far better when compared to OnePlus 7.
Though Pixel 2 XL have much better camera
Just wondering whether the staggering difference in photo quality between Exynos and Snapdragon versions of Note 10 is here as well. I was shocked how far better was Galaxy S9 (Snapdragon) in this term.
Definitely isn't this year...the Exynos model has improved a lot so much so there's a huge difference between the photo quality of the note 10 and the S10 5g I had.

That is weird, I find portrait quality to be much better than my Note 8 and iphone XS Max, edge definition is outstanding compared to iphones and I have taken portrait shots that are as good (resolution aside) as my Canon 70D with 85mm lens.

Quick Review

For background I've had the lot this year, iPhone XS, P30 Pro, S10e, Pixel3, Xperia 1 (the list goes on). I love phones and spend far too much on them, this is purely setting the scene on where my review is coming from.
Design - Excellent - Personally i'd like it to be a little smaller but it's a great looking unit
Screen - Great - Not as sharp as some competitors with WQHD but no curved edges...YES !!!
Camera - Great- Not as good as the P30 Pro but not too far off. Pixel and iPhone take better standard photos in my opinion but the versatility of the wide angle and Zoom makes this much more desirable
Speed - Excellent
Fingerprint sensor - Excellent
Connectivity - Excellent - I live in a poor reception area, this actually betters Huawei for signal retention (i found Huawei always the one to beat). And WiFi calling works even though my carrier (Three UK) doesn't technically support it (the Xperia1 for example didn't work).
Other notable mentions:
Haptic feedback is a good as i've had on Android, not iPhone level however
ColorOS is a little childish the notifications area and whole setup could just do with being a little more toned down
Is this the Reno zoom 10x or the Reno 5g?
Although I'm sure there the same ?.
What's it like compared to the S10e?
I've always noticed Huawei are so much better for cellular signal and Samsung being the worst so that's music to my ears that it's performing well.

It's the Reno 10x not the 5G variant.
It's much (much) bigger than the s10e but personally i believe it's snappier (being in the UK i get the Exynos variant Samsungs). the fingerprint sensor on the s10e would just not work reliably for me (i've had the old Sony side mounted fingerprint sensors with no issues). The camera i prefer on the Reno 10x and the battery is way better also i on the Reno.
If you don't mind the size then it's the Reno 10x all the way.

When compared to the regular S20 I noticed photos are often overexposed, so it loses detail in the white parts of the photo.
I noticed this in every photo comparison review.
I guess it's just a software thing, but Samsung needs to fix this.

Yeah, that seems to be a Samsung trait. It's really annoying. I'm looking to get a new phone, and Samsung have some great specced phones, but their photo processing steers me away. I gave up n my S10+ because of it, and went back to my pixel 3
Here's another comparison with the pixel 5, almost all photos and videos looks (imho) way better on the pixel 5.

The worse thing that you can do it's to switch from a p30 pro which it's the camera killer to this Samsung that it's having awful photo quality... You didn't show us some comparisons between this 2 devices.. i am and have been a huge Huawei P30 Pro fan but i am not sure if your statement is correct...
Sure yes, that P30 Pro is a real killer but the s20 fe is really very good too! The pictures can't really be compared - sometimes the P30 Pro wins and sometimes and yet sometimes more often the S20 fe wins.
but it always depends on your own preferences, i agree with you. i am currently very enthusiastic about the s20 fe.

Well I've got my old P20 Pro here, a 5G S20 FE and a Mi 10T Pro and guess which one still 'subjectively' takes far clearer and defined - if a little overly processed - pictures? Yeah it's the one released in March 2018
According to GSMarena the P30 Pro uses the same main sensor which is pretty abysmal for low light videoing so that is why I have avoided it. Oh and the low light recording is pretty terrible (on par with my P20 Pro) but is absolutely outstanding on the Mi10 Pro (pictures are pretty average though even with that big sensor)
I have taken a few pictures, quality seems OK, maybe change some settings to get the wow factor
The pictures are very nice. I came from a mi9 with a 48mp cam but the 12mp of the Samsung gives at least the same quality and even better because of the ois
That's strange. I came from Mi 9 also and while there is more detail on photos took on S20 there is also more noise and colors are bit strange, unnatural. Colors on Mi 9 are much more realistic.
Also a lot of times I do get grainy photos with a lot of noise on S20 FE.
Pretty bad. I have exynos version.
After 40 days of use,
Coming from a Pixel 3a, im disappointed from the main camera, specially at night.
Exynos version, i get oversaturated yellows and oranges (with the AI enhance off), generally saturation is up giving unnatural colors and at low light:
1) it takes 1,5-4 sec for a photo, so forget any moving objects
2) Phone actually "freezes" while processing the nightshot, instead of doing the post-processing in the background, takes 2-5 sec to finish.
3) The depth of field is not that great.
4) I need to bring down exposure all the time, or my highlights are usually blown.
Tele 3X is just ok, ultrwide, i have seen better distortion correction, both have same saturation thing as above.
