GPS Issue - drop outs, innaccurate location, bounces around - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Questions & Answers

Hello
Attached is the kind of signal I get when I go for a run with my Xiaomi9t (MIUI 11 Global Version) and MiBand 3.

I went for run with my old Galaxy 7 and MiBand 3 and the signal was perfect.
The screenshot is from MiFit App but it's the same on MapMyRun as well. Weirdly enough GPS navigation in Google Maps works way better, I have no problem using it.
A lot of guides online suggest changing app specific settings, but I don't think that's it, I think it's to do with the device itself!
Any ideas?

What type of accuracy do you use?
Which app?
I use GPS everyday and never had an issue

I used "High Accuracy" and "Device only" (was recommended as a possible solution) but the result was the same.
The screenshot is from MiFit app, however, it looks the same in MapMyRun.
I can use GPS navigation in Google maps, but it behaves as I described when I'm trying to use it for tracking runs/walks etc.

I have same issue after update
MI 9T GLOBAL 11.0.4
GPS keeps jumping 10-100 meters every 5 seconds
My google timeline also have much more jumps cuts compared to before.
Pokemon go is unplayable

Hi,
I have the same problem. Using a speed camera app and the app says every 20sec no GPS signal.
Battery saving options are disabled, GPS high accuracy.

Hello guys, new here.
Im experiencing same issues, it was really bad, so i reseted my device. It is a bit better now, but the accuracy is still not well, in komoot or strava, my tracking lines are not straight, as i would be hardly drunk and move zig-zag around. I have disabled miui power saving options for all the maps apps, still it's not perfect and my device, tend to lose GPS signal frequently. any news on that or recommendations how to fix this?

Honestly speaking i was fed up of GPS apps and maps...there wasnt a single free app which could just use my GPS chip and tell me without maps my heading, my altitude, my speed and my coordinates..
and which wud work purely on GPS chip..no data usage no need of downloaded maps..
i dont need maps all the time..i mean there has to be a way to use GPS without having maps.
so here it is:

found this cool app which is free for Xperia:

u need to login to download but its free.
a very simple app which uses your GPS chip.
very useful when u r out there somewhere in the world.
it also gives u the sky view of how many satellites are there above u.
i guess all of u must be already knowing this
but i love its simplicity
I had no idea of it. Will try that! Does it use ONLY gps chip, no data transfer?

GPS/Google Maps Review

I'm still seeing a few posts about GPS and i thought it would be appropriate to post a review here. I've voiced in the past that GPS functionality worked really well on my phone but those were based on short observation rather a long one
Over the weekend, i had the pleasure of driving all over the hudson valley area visiting various vineyards and local attractions. This trip started from NYC all the up across the hudson river into the mountains. Before leaving for the trip, i went through google maps and downloaded multiple regions (10 download limit reached) onto the device so that cell reception doesn't impact the map caching
1. Navigation was flawless (except for one location)
2. Phone was placed in the center console since i didn't have a car dock to mount it on the window
3. Didn't see or hear the device deviate from the route except for one location and that one location was the only place that require rerouting.
4. Even with spotty at&t reception in some rural areas, it kept the route information and gps locked
5. One location it did have trouble with was on the GW bridge where i was on the lower level and it thought i was on the upper. It corrected itself as soon as i was on the connecting road across the bridge and i'm sure this will happen to just about any other GPS nav unit on the market
6. Device never got heated up even while being charged. This could be due to the fact that there was AC blasting at 70 degrees the whole time
7. GPS relocks within seconds as soon as google maps is reopened between destinations
Somethings that i didn't like about the navigation
1. Traffic overlay not available on the navigating route except when you switch over to the map view and change the layers
2. 10 area limit can be a problem if the destination is more than 200miles away
Pics from one of many bridges (taken with SGSII of course)

One very big annoyance making turn by turn almost impossible is that it tells you to take the highway exit much too early (3 km in advance) and than much too late(50 m) also tomtom will tell you in advance which lane to select so it's much easier to get to the right exit; accuracy is very good though and it also locks quite quickly

Maps giving many Awake locks on phone idle

Hi guys,
I'm just curious if is normal to get so many Awake locks, while the phone is on idle:

If is not, can you please tell me how I can fix this?
Thanks.
That don't look normal to me. Do you use latitude?
Latitude off, clear data and cache
Diced it here ... Too bad cause its a nice feature
I had this too.
Uncheck 'Use wireless networks' in the Location and security menu
and make sure you are signed out of Latitude
Ya I use latitude all the time so my friends know where I am.
I use latitude as well and I have the same issue. Maps gives a TON of wake locks with it activated. Problem is, I want to use latitude. I really don't understand the need for the constant awake time. It only updates the information every so often, it shouldn't be constant...
There is a defect for this bug that has been declined: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15057. I hope google will get to it at some point.
Thanks for the link. I did a test and I get like 24 of battery with the phone on idle... IMO is an amazing time... I might be wrong. On my old Pre2, I could of only DREAM of such specs. Still, if there is a fix to improve the battery with Latitude on, I'll take it.
Let's see how 2.3.5 update goes. Anyone knows when is it scheduled on generic firmware?
Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with my XXKG3.
I got a Map update couple days back and the issue seems to go away. Will keep an eye on it.
Too bad, latitude is nice.
Had the same issue about one month ago , and solved it by uninstalling one of the google map update via Titanium Backup and everyting went back to normal .
May be it's related to one of those "updates" , and as mentioned before you should try updaing to latest version ( if available ) or downgrade to lower version .

Weird location issue.

I got myself an unlocked Note3 on launch day and since switching from Note 2 to Note 3 I've noticed that when my phone is in standby my location keeps going to somewhere off the coast of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Wouldn't be so bad but I'm in the NorthEast of Scotland (up by Aberdeen) and it really throws stuff off why trying to use location based services in the first few minutes.
Has anyone else noticed this type of drift when sleeping?
If your location is being detected by mobile phone bases rather than gps it is probably due to the equipment in the base station having moved. This happens from time to time when a mobile operator fixes a fault at a base station and does not reprogram the cell id upon which the phone relies to get the location. There are some apps like Cellmapper that will let you see the cell ids that are supposed to be in an area and apps like Tasker that will get them in real time

but I am not sure that the list of locations from cell id is available on he internet any more.

Thanks I'll have a look at that.
Only thing is it doesn't really matter where I am but the false location is always the same.
I've seen this in Aberdeen city and also in Peterhead and Fraserburgh.
That's more inexplicable.....although there must be a reason!

I have seen mine move around quite a few times.
Today takes the biscuit.
Just glanced at my phone and my weather is for Bani Walid (in Libya). Is my phone trying to tell me something?

google play services drain

Today was the first day in the one week I've had my oneplus 6t that I've had high google play services battery drain. It is at 11%
Has anyone experienced this, and what could have caused this?
My battery life wasn't that good today
Yes, same here today only, never noticed before. I kept wondering if I installed some app or may be some beta app sign up.

Could be one of these several updates from Google too, may be Google app? I am beta too.
Getting it here too, 20% when other apps are like 2-3%s. It must be a service issue then.
+1. Not as high as you guys but it definitely higher than normal.

This happens with all phones, even the Pixels. Update all your apps then clear the google services data. Reboot and usage should be about normal now.
Are you sure? That would reset all accounts and other info.
I tried Files by Google to clean up system files and that seems to clear it for now.

I remember reading something about this last week. I have the newest app don't see any issues...yet.
This has started happening to me now, first couple of days it was fine then it kicked in. The battery stats say it's running when in active use for 2hrs 2 mins but my screen on time is only 1hr 50 so I'd don't really understand that?
I had high Google Play Services drain too (about 12%). Turning off wifi and bluetooth scanning in Settings -> Google -> Location -> Scanning. Also disabled "Improved Location" under Google Location Accuracy in that same Location page. It brought my standby drain from 2% an hour to 0.5%. Google Maps is still fast as ever at locking my location.
