Root in order to increase battery on Pixel 3A or 3A XL? - Google Pixel 3a Guides, News, & Discussion

I am wondering if it makes sense to root the Pixel 3A XL in order to remove system apps and increase battery? Has anyone come out with a ROm that is mostly just stock, but with all of the junked removed? I don't really need root access like most people do. I just want to use the basic features of the phone "camera, internet browsing, email, finger print reader, etc and get the most battery life possible. I use an app like greenify to kill apps but that doesn't work on system apps. Is LineagOS this sort of thing?

A custom kernel will do far more for battery savings then rooting will. And there are several Roms in various states of completion in the works right now, including my own but not very many I would consider ready for prime time and none Ive seen yet that are what youre looking for. Stock AOSP is very different then stock Google and typically when a Rom dev goes that far they also add lots of other customizations which may or may not be to your liking.

Thanks for your response. Could you point me in the direction of where I can read about and follow the progress of the projects you are referring to?

There are a couple on here and the 3a XL forums. Im sure all the big dev teams have unofficial builds for both devices as well. As I build my own Rom I dont keep up on this too closely though.

Agree. Custom kernel might be all you need at first.
I switched to a custom kernel by flair2 for a different reason, as I was looking for LZMA compression support for TWRP, but I'm quite happy with the battery benefits that kernel brought to my Pixel 3a. You can find it here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3a/development/kernel-pixel-3a-xl-elementalx-1-01-t3931185

Will this work on the Pixel 3A XL as well? I assume they are the same besides the size.

Kernels for these devices are interchangeable.

Are you running it on Android 9 or 10? I haven't updated to 10 because I have heard of issues with battery life after doing this update.

Battery on 10 is better than on Pie. I get roughly 10% better battery since updating. My guess is those experiencing it didnt clean flash 10 and just took the OTA.

Is there a guide that explains how to do that? I'm pretty inexperienced with all this.

A clean flash involves a factory reset. Be sure to back up any files to a different storage medium (PC, cloud, etc.) Once backed up, just use the factory image provided by Google.
Main page (has instructions): https://developers.google.com/android/images
3a December image: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/sargo-qq1a.191205.011-factory-c5ec22ee.zip
3a XL December image: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/bonito-qq1a.191205.011-factory-af411823.zip
The included .bat file (bat for windows, sh for Linux or Mac) is what you run. Be sure you get the latest fastboot drivers so you have no issues flashing in fastbootd. For future updates, just flash the stock boot image before taking the update or download the next month's image and delete the -w flag in the bat/sh file. That is the wipe switch.

I started using EX kernel on 9 to get permanent TWRP, but still using it now on 10, where we don't have TWRP. So I like that kernel a lot.

[Q] Help with PA, Matr1x, and my Nexus 4

Hi everyone ,
I got my Nexus 4 yesterday and I love it! Before I got the phone I did a bunch of research on loading custom ROM's and kernels, and even pre downloaded everything so when it arrived I could start tinkering right away. At the moment it seems Paranoid Android is an ideal ROM for me, as it strikes a nice balance between simplicity and customization. However, it seems that the Matr1x kernel doesn't run well on it due to the JSS/JWR incompatibility issue that came about with Android 4.3. I'd like to run the Matr1x kernel because it has a great balance between performance and battery life, and does some fancy GPU over clocking/CPU undervolting for you that I am too afraid to do on my own.
I found a zip file on the xda forums that remedies the incompatibility issue and allows Matr1x v11 and PA 3.99.1 to run together without issue. So my questions are these:
1. Is there any risk in using this JWR/JSS zip patch? Finding it was a pain in the butt and not many people have commented on its quality or where it comes from. Is it safe?
2. PA's gapps package has a bunch of G+ stuff included that I don't care about. Is there a way to remove it like in some of the slim gapps packages?
3. Has anyone else encountered a static hiss/ticking coming from their earpiece? It can only be heard faintly when the device is up to my ear but it's a little frustrating all the same. Is there a fix for this? Does the device's warranty cover it?
4. Finally, I have one thing I am confused about regarding rooting etc: I have CWMod installed on my phone and I have unlocked my bootloader. By unlocking my bootloader, have I also rooted my phone?
Thanks so much for your time!

1. Should be safe, as long as you have a nandroid backup in case something goes wrong.
2. You just delete the apks from the gapps zip. (system/app)
3. Haven't heard of it. Hope someone else has a solution.
4. Well, no. The term "Rooted" only applies to ROMs, when you have a superuser app and binary installed (Supersu, superuser etc.). But, you are just one step from rooting (Flashing the supersu zip).
All custom ROMs are already rooted, so you don't worry about that.

This is the only thread I could find with a direct link to the .zip, which has me a bit skeptical since downloading it from a Google Drive account seems kind of sketchy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45690500
That said, it does work. It got PA and Matr1x running together very smoothly, but I reverted to my backup of stock PA before entering any private info because I wanted to see what others had to say about it first.
Thanks again!

I think it may not work. It has Adreno 200 and MSM8960 libs in it, a GPU and CPU that have nothing to do with the N4's APQ8064 and Adreno 320. You can still try, because they most certainly don't do any "stealing credit card" stuff.

I did some more digging and found that the guy responsible for the patch has a profile on xda, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3873953 and he seems pretty legit. The patch is also linked in the Purified Kernel thread page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2368548 as a recommended work-around for the JSS/JWR graphical glitching. I installed v1.0 on my Nexus 4, which did nothing to help, then I installed v1.2 (linked in OP), and I now have Paranoid Android 3.99.1-RC running (so far) flawlessly on Matr1x v11. Pretty happy about that .

Can you confirm that this is working? I've been wanting to use a black substratum theme for ages, but until now I didn't dare to, since substratum doesn't officially support LineageOS as far as I know. On top of that I read a couple of comments of people having issues

You're right, but I meant LineageOS as in an LOS-based ROM more than LOS itself. Most custom ROMs run better than LOS and have a bunch of features.
You may know that Substratum uses "OMS" to do the overlay stuff, so if you want a ROM with full substratum compatibility, it's as easy as finding one with the necessary commits, like NucleaROM or RR (I prefer NucleaROM over all of the other LOS-based ROMs to be honest). Just look at the description of the ROM for 'oms support'. Or you can try, I'm sure that I used Substratum on LineageOS stock for some time and I was getting 7 hrs SOT with heavy usage

Alright, so thats how it is. But you say you had it running on LOS? Did you experience issues, or why don't you have it running anymore? To be honest I would currently prefer not flashing a new rom, since I'm kinda dependent on my phone working right now and at the moment, it works mostly fine would still love to use a totally black substratum theme though

You have LOS on your phone though, right? If so, why don't you try? It's not like you have to flash anything so you can't brick your phone...
I think I used it on LOS yeah. But I prefer stock over custom ROMs by far. And now that the MiFavor 5 ROM is out (with the Android 7 QS tiles) I don't have any reason to use the buggy and laggy custom ROMs
I swear LOS was the worst of them all when I used it back in Feb/March. The worst thing was that a bunch of apps simply didn't feel like working...

Yes I do. Personally I don't feel like it's that bad so you think it's save to try it out?
Hmm so you feel like stock is better right now? I switched to LOS because I was kinda mad at the stock rom (at least the German one) since updates weren't coming at promised times and when they did come they were full of bugs like apps not working and more.... Which was mostly fixed afterwards, but I wasn't that happy with the situation. I also didn't like the look and feel, which now wouldn't be as much of a problem, since I'm using Nova + KLWP to change most of the visuals. Is the "Tiles-App" with more QS tiles working with stock now? It didn't when I went to LOS. How's battery life? What are your main reason to go back to stock?
And least but not last.... How would I get back to stock? Just flashing a zip from the ZTE website?
And another weird thing which didn't bother me too much until now: I bought my phone in Germany so I had the G model. Ever since going to LineageOS, which included unlocking the boot loader etc. My phone tells me /shows up as the U model.... Is that bad in any way? Other than that it seems to work alright though

-I like stock because it runs better, and even though I thought I would hate ZTE's UI, I actually like it after using it for a long time. And the 5.0 UI is awesome, nuff said. They use blur on the volume pop-up and when you pull down the status bar.
MiFavor 5.0 is not official, it's just the A2017 ROM that's been ported by the Russians. You need to install a special A2017 bootstack (it seemed really dangerous but it's not that bad really) and then the system zip, which formats /system anyways. After that you have to format /data (which will format the internal storage too, just saying) because of the encryption, and it should boot just fine.
I have an A2017G too and flipped out when they f00ked up with B02 with Google Play Store, then B03 with exfat, and went to LOS. Then i tried to go back and DFU-bricked my phone. After I fixed it I preferred to stay stock, and in B04 they fixed everything there was to fix. Tried NucleaROM, best so far but it still has that WIP feel...
Anyways, make a backup of your current system on an SD card if you want to go 5.0.
The A2017U thing is normal, it's because the universal bootloader is actually the U bootloader without the NON-HLOS.bin which you flash later via the A2017G-MODEM.zip (which is ancient lol)
Thank you again for your aid! I have another question....
I downloaded substratum now and installed some themes but somehow I can't get them to work...
For example "Flux" tells me everything went good and I need to restart, but nothing changes after the reboot...
Swift Black has some errors compiling :/
Any ideas?

The best would be wiping everything, but you can try wiping system only. after that if the phone doesn't work well just wipe data
It seems to be that all the ROMs have bugs or are laggy. Stock is best right now if my research is correct.
Stock...
Edit* with a few things added and removed...
So I am running Nuclear Ron now, everything went smoothly and I've got Magisk installed correctly for root access. So far when I'm using the rom I love everything and substratum works well as well.....
But.... Whenever I turn of the screen it almost immediately reboots... when using my phone I don't get any random reboots, but when the screen is off it restarts every time. This is a real bummer and I keep my phone off most of the time right now, to prevent the reboots every minute :/
Any ideas what the reason for this issue could be? Would love to stay with this rom, but only if I can get this fixed!
I Uninstalled substratum and the substratum themes by the way, but that didn't help either...
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!
I get phenomenal battery life and speed on NucleaROM. Stability is so-so, however.

Rom + Kernel

Hello, I'm a new user this device, my previous smartphone was S8 (Exynos) but i swapped on OP5 8/128 gb

+1 for Pure Fusion, I get up to 10 and a half hours screen on time with better performance than I get on OOS, noticeable by eye.
Ultimately, you may find a better combination out there, but the baseline for me is Fusion, it just works as it should, stamina and power.

Super smooth, absolutely as fast as Oxygen OS. I always use "GApps" and here U should choose "ARM64" and "7.1". I recommend you to use either "Nano" or "Pico", but you could choose whatever you want!
1. Flash the ROM in TWRP
2. Flash GApps
3. Flash Magisk/Super SU (If U want to be rooted)
4. Flash "no_verity_op5.zip" (If your phone are dectrypted, otherwise skip this one)

Yea mate it's always the latest version of the Rom, I always clean flash too.
I've tried all the Rom's on XDA for the Oneplus, No limits for me is the best OOS Rom (personal choice) but overall and for the things I need from it, plus Displaylink technology works indefinitely on it, on OOS Rom's it cuts out after around 9 minutes which is a deal breaker for me.
10 hours SOT is superb.

Basicly:
Encrypted = Makes it more difficult for people who are not authorized to access information stored on the phone. You are thus safer when the phone are encrypted.
Decrypted = Opposite to Encrypted. The benefit with this one compared to Encrypted is a better performance.
You can check what U use by going to the settings menu, then head over to "Security & fingerprint", scroll down to the bottom and done.
PS: I am Decrypted!

before anyone drops any more advice here to this user, please be aware that narrating the entire learning process for flashing makes you partially responsible for what happens to this users phone.
@dzesiu2002 i strongly advise you to do research on all of these topics before going any further. you could end up wasting a lot of your time or worse: breaking your phone.

This. Also, not trying to be rude and it's awesome that everyone is so willing to help, but I don't think spoonfeeding is the best option. OP has tons of questions (many that are simple and can easily be answered with self-research).
As the user I quoted mentioned, you should visit other threads that have instructions and information on flashing, encrypt vs. decrypt and so on!

Man, i have much phones all of them always have custom rom and kernel, so i never brick the device... All rom, kernel have in own thread installation process and i going with it, newbie for sure will brick the device, if i flashed much devices without a break them, then really you still think im newbie ? Cmon in my thread in #1 post, i dont write " its my first time with flashing the device, am noob or something like that " Newbies having 100% understandable tutorial about unlocking BL, install TWRP or Root the device, but they still ask for help, did you see anywhere in OP5 section about i needed help with that ? First of all, im not stupid and know any flash is risk, but if device bricked then this is not the fault of the author of the topic, only it is the fault of the user who carried out the installation wrongly. This post is for you and means you have to post something like this in threads people who really are green and dont know anything about flashing.

i am NOT calling you stupid. i AM definitely calling you a newbie.
the questions you have been asking are very rudimentary when it comes to flashing ROMs. regardless of your previous experience, it is still best that you do a lot more reading. this obviously isn't what you want to hear, but it is as true as truth can be. if you don't know what encryption is, then you shouldn't be trying to work around it. you should be figuring out what encryption is in the first place.

Is OnePlus 5T compatible with 5 ROMs?

I just ordered a 5T and wonder, how compatible it is with the 5.
Unlike last years 3T compared to 3, this time there is no hardware changed. AFAIK the display has a different resolution - being 18:9 instead of 16:9 and the fingerprint reader MIGHT be different.
But all the internals are the same. So can I just install my favorite 5 ROM onto my 5T? Or - like last year - will I have to wait a while until unified ROMs become custom?
AFAIK the 2nd camera is different in the OP5T so I think devs will wait to see what's what before confirming if they can be unified.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. Camera changed quiet a bit. Still, if one can live with crappy/no camera, question still stands: Does a 5 ROM run on 5t? Looking at LineageOS 15 here.
The display has the same resolution, it just a different aspect ration.

According to gsmarena - who I trust quiet a bit in tech specs - the 5T got 1080x2160 where the 5 got 1080x1920
This is in sync with other sites I read about the 5T. This could be the biggest issue in using a standard 5 ROM.
You can always just do a nandroid backup in twrp and flash some ROM. My bet is in it not working tho.

IF twrp can handle the display, that is exactly what I am going to test. Also "fastboot boot"ing twrp will answer already how the bigger display might be handled.

I can leave my findings in this thread if you like, sure.
About using 5 Roms on 5T:
It does not work. Kernel does not boot in the first place. If you replace the kernel with 5T kernel, like done for TWRP, TWRP works, full display is used - no borders.
Custom ROM cannot be installed because of Firmware check. I modified latest Lineage15 and removed the check - even being sure it probably wont boot. And it didn't. Kernel wont boot. Kernel is not even detected as a kernel by fastboot. I did not dare to try the 5T OOS/TWRP kernel on that installed Lineage15 ROM.
I did dare to try the bluespark kernel for 5T OOS on LineageOS tough. A long shot that should not work. And it did not work.
After OEM Unlocking the phone, stock ROM wont boot anymore. It's the old dm-verity issue I know from oneplus 3. So I flashed jcadduono's no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip from https://build.nethunter.com/android-tools/no-verity-opt-encrypt/
Now I got an unlocked 5T with stock Oxygen, twrp and magisk. Waiting patiently for ROMs - especially Lineage - to catch up and work on 5T.
If any dev needs a test slave, I am available.
Thanks for testing, just got my op5t and was looking for lineage to replace the stock rom.
No the Oneplus 5T have a resolution of 2.160 x 1.080.
I unpacked OP5T system folder ans kernel and it's quite similar to the one of OP5. It should be easy to get it ported with minimal modifications to the code (maybe not a single file will need to be edited and we just need to ensure we don't use files from OP5T that relate to parts of the hardware that are different).
I tried to boot the system.new.dat of OP5T (removing some OP5T files and adding some OP5 files) but it was the first time I tried to create a room with this system.new.dat format so it didn't even got flashed.
When I have time I will try to create a port ROM with the old style (meta-inf, system folder, radio files and boot.img only), but as I said it doesn't seem complicated to get it ported so probably someone will have done it before I try again
Isn't the main camera the same on the 5T? The second one had been changed but the 1st afaik is the same. So the low light certainly wouldn't work.
Soc is the same, not sure about other components, but definitely very similar, I think some cross platform ROMs may work but they would need to some changes made.
Not 100% what's been altered tbh, but from what I can tell they have used quite a bit from the 5 for the 5T.
Time will tell I suppose.
Would project treble (if we ever get it) help in this instance ?

If I'm not wrong only the second camera, fingerprint and display are different.
And yes the ROMs are almost identical. Even the kernel doesn't have much differences

Saving Shamu

Dear members,
My Nexus 6 is in desperate need of some new life. It's been terribly laggy for the last year, and I can't buy a new phone right now.
I have very little experience with rooting, recoveries, kernels and other jargon words, and I really need your help!
What's the best combination of Kernel and OS at the moment? I was thinking about LineageOS 16 stock Kernel, but would like to be sure. Do I need root access?
Also, can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial to install what I need that can be done on Mac? I know you guys can probably get things done based on your experience and with little information, but I need a step-by-step or I will brick my phone.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!

Actually ROMs and kernels aren't a mix and match. Use the kernel coming with the ROM or be prepared for funny things to happen.
Lineage has a pretty straightforward step by step guide for installation: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/shamu/install
You don't need root - if you want it you can flash https://mirrorbits.lineageos.org/su/20190709/addonsu-16.0-arm-signed.zip and enable it in the settings.

Depends of your definition of usability. Of cause it's slower then newer devices as shamu was developed in 2014.
But I still use it as secondary device for browsing and watching youtube. Also I am a bit biased as I am the maintainer for shamu on LineageOS. Maybe you should ask other users in the Lineage-16.0 thread.

Hi, thanks for joining the thread. I have no idea what a module is. Would you mind explaining and showing me where I can a tutorial to get it installed?
I use LOS16 and Franco Kernel with ondemand CPU module and this is really great. Almost no lags, but sometimes, once a week it will freeze and reboot itself, dont know why.

If you search on Google about Magisk, you can directly go where you can download the zip and you can install it immediately after LineageOS and Google Apps. Then, once you booted the device, from inside the Magisk app, you can install from its internal repository the modules you want to use, every one of them does something you can find useful I think. In the end, I recommend you NFS Injector module to have your device good as a new one in terms of performance. I hope to have everything cleared for you

Hi guys,
I came back here to give some feedback on what I have done.
I followed the instructions on the Lineage wiki link and installed Lineage OS 16. I kept it as simple as possible and didn't do anything besides that. No module, no magisk, no root, no TWRP. Just Lineage. It's not that I didn't want to go further, but I don't know enough about android to do it. Even just installing Lineage was kind of a challenge. It was not a smooth process, but I managed to do it.
In any case, it fews like an entirely new phone now. Lag has been reduced to almost none. It was almost unusable before and know it's actually enjoyable to use. Thank you very much for your help and to everyone that kept support for Shamu alive.
I did run into a few problems so far, but nothing really significant. The flashlight and camera sometimes won't work and need a reboot to come back (thankfully boot time is really quick now). The Netflix app also won't work anymore, but that's expected with no magisk, right?
If I wanted to go back and install magisk and a few modules, can I do that now without having to wipe the phone again? Or would I have to redo the whole process?
Thank you!!

No need to Wipe.
Just reboot to recovery and flash magisk installer ZIP.
Now reboot to system, and you see new Magisk App installed.
Just open it and install any of the Modules you want, just make sure to reboot after every Install/Update/Uninstall of any Module.

Thank you for answering. Do you mind telling me what a module is / what is it for?
Also, this is day 4 since I have installed lineage and I have already been prompted two updates. Is that normal?
I have just experienced my first crash / weird behavior today. I hope it doesn't deteriorate too much over time.

If you are using your Nexus 6 as a Daily Driver like Me, I would recommend you to install LineageOS 15.1 (Android 8.1) which is much more stable and responsive than LineageOS 16 (Android 9.0).
About updates it is fine, because LineageOS 16 is in active development and updates are released regularly, as compared to LineageOS 15.1 which is almost finalized and its updates are released every weeks/months.
About Module:
A module is a mod or a customization for your device which can be installed systemlessly(without modifying your android system files) using Magisk.
For Example: If you want to enhance your audio of the headphone you can install Viper4Android.

I am using it as a daily. For the last few days it's been really good. It was stock before and pretty much unusable. Do you think it's worth redoing the process to put lineage 15.1 on? I am not that confident with these things. I am at that point where I think "I can't believe I've done it and it's working". And if I redo it and screw things up I am gonna be furious I tried to fix what was not broken.

I think it will worth installing.

Hi,
Coming back to share my experience. Lineage 16 was performing really well, but it got unstable after a few days. I was having 3-4 random reboots per day, mainly when scrolling through pages in multiple apps. The flashlight and camera also wouldn't work quite often and needed restart.
So I decided to take the advice given here and flashed lineage 15.1 (with mindthegaps, no root, no magisk). Performance isn't as good, but stability has been much better. No reboots so far. A few app crashes, but nothing major.
Once again I few like my phone has gotten new life and I will be able to squeeze a few more months out of it.
Thank you for all the replies to this thread. You guys helped a lot!
