Screen issues when watching video at low brightness - Google Pixel 4 Questions & Answers

Hello guys, this problem is more noticeable when watching videos at low brightness (>50%) in a dim environment. Shadow details in dark scenes are completely blown out and take an unnatural oily greenish hue. Like a pastel painting.
If anyone intends to replicate it, first make sure you're in a dark room. Bedtime with minimal ambient lighting should be the perfect situation (if you're the type who's relaxing watching movies on their phone before sleep). Otherwise you won't be able to notice the problem easily. Then, make sure you're watching a dark scene since the problem is only apparent where there is shadow.
A good example is the opening scene in Blade Runner 2049 with K and Morton having a conversation in a dark house.
This issue manifests with all common apps. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies.
I used to have the exact same problem with my Galaxy S9 when it was just out but Samsung eventually issued a software update after a couple of months that fixed it. So this has to be software related and not an actual problem with the screen itself.
Google should be made aware though.
There is also an XDA topic describing it with photos too so you know what it looks like:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/help/colour-blending-blacks-problem-t3765385
Is there anyone who's already experiencing it with their Pixel 4? Should be the same with XL.

I checked on those sources and I don't have that issue.

It only shows up at extreme low brightness like < 15%. But every OLED phone I've used suffers from this.

[Q] Uneven color temp/brightness across the screen

Have any of you (Nexus 7 owners) experiences an uneven color temp/brightness across a Nexus 7 screen? I have searched threads in google but found no Nexus 7 owner mentioned about this but many iPad owners did.
My Nexus 7 is a C9O which was replaced a screen by ASUS 1 week ago (due to broken screen). I have noticed this problem 2 days after received it back. My screen is generally a "warm tint" (as most N7 are, I believe) but when I see a white or grey background (in ebooks or webpages) in portrait mode, about 1/3 of the left screen has a more cooler tone and it is gradually warmer toward the right. There is hardly noticeable when I watch movie or surfing most websites but it's quite annoying when I read e-newspaper or ebooks which are around 70% of my usage.
Note that this is not due to viewing angles since I tried to rotate the screen / change viewing angle and the problem is persist (on the "correct" side). I tried to use my DSLR to take a shot of my screen but it can't capture the uneven color temp just like eyes do.
I just want to know if this is normal for an IPS/LCD screen? Please share your idea / experience on this. Any way to fix it?
P.S. I am not an English speaker, really sorry for my bad English.

Dark elements on screen turn purple when the brightness is set to low

Hello,
I just noticed that dark elements on my screen (e.g. the quote boxes in XDA Labs) turn purple when I set the brightness really low. When I'm scrolling this gets much worse, for example the default avatar pictures in XDA Labs get blurry and purple. If I set the brightness a bit higher everything is perfect.
I found this thread on Reddit that describes the problem and provides a test picture. In this thread some people say that all AMOLED displays do that. Is that true or should I RMA my phone?

It's true all amoled screens suffer from this, I have it on my Oneplus 3, and had it on my nexus 6p as well. I thought about returning it for another one but then on XDA I had seen some pictures a lot worse then me. That's when I decided to keep it, the same for the 6p. For me personally this might be a reason to buy the HTC U11. I know amoled has great contrast and all but this is so annoying. It depends on how sensitive you are to it, my wife doesn't notice those things, I do and can't look past it or get used to it.
But thank you for sharing, it helps me making up my mind for buying my new device
Amoled issue, present on all devices I've see so far.
Ok good to know that my phone isn't broken.
The general purple tint is actually quite comfortable because it allows me to use my phone in bed without burning my eyes. On the other hand the purple smearing while scrolling is pretty annoying but I guess I'll get used to it or just set the brightness a bit higher.

HDR screen flickering

Since OnePlus 7pro might have HDR 10+ I checked to see how nice my S10+ screen looks again. Well, to my surprise the screen would flicker playing a YouTube video in the zoomed to fill in. When I would put to original there wasn't any flickering. So last night I'm freaking out that I have an issue with my phone. So this morning I started to do some basic trouble shooting steps before I call Samsung. I put the phone into safe mode and the flickering went away.. well, now I was really baffled because my phone is setup just like my note 9. So I brought the phone back in a dark room in safe mode and the screen flickered like it did last night in my dark bedroom. I have a feeling my ambient light sensor freaks out when the HDR content is being played. I'm not sure if this is just my phone's issue or if this is widespread. Can anyone else check their phone playing HDR content in the dark? Flickering or no flickering of the screen. It's not a constant flicker but it's very often and obvious when it happens. I'll get a link to a video of my phone doing it soon...

Also, I just tried to show someone and it wouldn't happen until I turned the brightness halfway up in a completely dark room. When I did it flickered on and off depending on the scene. It'll even flicker at 1080p HDR not just 1440p HDR. During the scene it's flickering in I can pause the HDR video and it'll continue to flicker.

Thanks stranger.. Lol
Samsung customer service is brutally bad!
I'll be heading into best buy to show them the same issue the Reddit user posted.. hopefully I can get this resolved. Minus the $70 loss in screen protector and body wrap..
Anyone running into this issue?

Display issues

Hello guys, suddenly I'm having display issues on my k20. I've attached a link to the video, when i pull down the notification bar, look how the blacks are loading a bit late. When i turn off dark mode, i see no issues like this, it's just the beautiful display again. Even i had same issues with my dark wallpaper. Please check, if you've same issues. I'm really concerned about it. Also, this maybe screen flickering but when i increased brightness, the issue didn't disappear, it was still persistent but at lower levels.

That's normal behavior for amoled displays.
1st: If this is the display problem, how can you expect we can see this on a screen capture??
2nd (probably because of the 1st): I can't see anything wrong.
3rd: I have no display issues at all.

Can't you see that voilet-ish colour instead of black when I'm swiftly moving the notification bar? It's clearly visible in video, you might want to check again.
Nope, watched it at least 5 times, on my PC and my 9T. Can't see anything peculiar.
I can not see anything wrong or violet at all. Am playing this on my computer at 1080 resolution and 0.25 playback speed and there is nothing to see.
If your screen is faulty, we are not able to see it on video you have shared with us of course
DAMN IT! Even i see nothing from my laptop
I think I'm having screen issues, only when its dark mode, else the screen is working absolutely fine!
I need to get to the service center ASAP! :crying:
Edit: Guys can you try doing the same and look if the issue is persistent in your screen too?! It would really be helpful for me.

It's normal for OLED panels, some are better, some worse. My phone has it too. No need to go to the service center.
I too have it brother. Dark mode has it normal mode doesn't. It can also be noticed if you open youtube and scroll back and forth quickly. The blacks seem to be spilling or streching. I saw that on your video and I don't know if it is normal or not but i too have that and wanted to ask someone about that.

People are claiming this to be normal, but after searching a lot i got to know these kind of issues come after 1-2years, not in a week or month. So I'm trying my best to replace my device or get the screen changed. I don't understand why Xiaomi is keeping the colours to pure blacks when they know their displays are facing smearing issues. I hope someone just changes that pure black colour to very dark grey colour, system widely. Some developer tested(on OP7 pro) the battery consumption difference with pure black and dark grey and it turned out that, dark grey consumes only 0.067% more power than dark inky blacks. I'm humbly requesting developers to change the colour, or at least have an option for the same.
My display when there is low light, the brightness is set to low and the image I see on the display is darkish I can see a vertical line at the left side of the display, is this normal or should I return It?
It's normal for Amoled screens (from first day of use). Just search for Amoled black smearing and you'll find a lot of videos and articles. S10 has it, iPhones have it too.

That article it's literally from weeks after users got their OP3.

I have faint vertical lines on the right of the display when the brightness is low which is how I normally use it. I also have black smearing on pitch black to dark color transition. I think thats normal, it doesn't really bother me all that much.
The best way to reproduce this issue is turn off brightness to minimum and turn on reading mode to max. Then you'll see delay of displaying some colors (mostly gray)

My k20 has this issue and it's annoying that after paying for a flagship killer, we just got a cheap display which is not just low in quality but has these issue in dark mode which i think most of us use. Interestingly when i record this from screen recorder,it doesn't show up much but the same can be seen visually. So, this is definitely an issue that redmi is trying to let go.

As you "record from screen recorder" you do not record from the screen as you may like to think. You capture the video signal BEFORE it gets to the screen. So any imperfections caused by the amoled screen do not show up on a screen capture.
Anyway, this is a normal weakness with all amoled screens that I have seen.
It is soooo annoying when in dark mode at low brightness, I feel like I couldn't stand it anymore. The worst experience of display usage ever.
Maybe with DC dimming update that might happen someday, the issue won't be as intrusive and pronounce as it is right now. But whenn???
UPDATE:
So I found a workaround for this issue with an app. It's called Screen Balance. Basically it adds a filter overlay on your screen (ineffective on notification panel, because android restriction). Set it to either flourescent or flourescent (warm) at 15% strength minimum, and both brightness and contrast at 100%. You won't see perfect black anymore, but very close to that and no smearing effects visible unless you're really trying to.
I've bought Mi 9T Pro and have the same issue (also see it in your video). Did you fixed that?

Pixel 4 OLED screen bleeding..?

I know it might sound strange as light bleeding shouldn't exist on OLED panels; but it's either OLED panels are not perfect, or my Pixel 4 is defective
If I bump my brightness all the way up and look at a dark image (e.g pure black wallpaper) on a dark environment (dark room), you would expect to see no light coming from the panel at all where as if the screen is just turned off, but for my phone that's not the case; I see a slight "light bleeding" like parts of the panel. I don't know if this is some sort of image retention or burn-in, I've always had my phone brightness on 50% or less.
I also had a digging and found out that "OLED panel DOES emit a very little amount of light even when black. As the panel is under current when the screen is turned on"
Therefore I would like to ask fellow XDA users who has an OLED panel for their phone; do you get this on your screen too?
Hi i have the pixel 4 and i have tried with a black image and max brightness in a dark room as u suggested and unfortunately i see the bleeding too.
In my opinion is not something that i would care that much, nobody does something this complex every day, no way i was gonna notice this without your post
i'll try to contact google assistance and ask about this problem and see if they will consider it a faulty hardware or just some minor defects. due to be the first production batch.

Yeah like you said with everyday use it is not something that you will notice, that goes for me too. I only noticed it when I was watching an HDR content in Netflix which the app forces the brightness all the way up for the content.
I hope it is not a faulty thing for the Pixel 4, but rather an imperfection with the OLED technology when the panel is under an electric current
Thanks for trying it out ?
