[Q] How to get started ( install gmail, android market etc )?

I have had A500 for couple of days. I want to get the basic android softwares on it. Later I will root it but first I want to try the normal softwares and tools. I am looking for instructions how to install the basic android applications on it
- android market
- google maps
- gmail
When I got my A500 I noticed there is no google maps, no gmail no android market app. Browser and normal email application is available and several other applications.
Here is the version information of the device. Languages on the device are english, simplified chinese and traditional chinese.

Is there a list of applications which should be found on a brand new Acer A500?

THere should already ( maps, gmail, and market apps ) on a stock A500... !
even if you have nothing... at least there should be 1 app ( MARKET ) !!
this is another one of Acer's weird approach to standardize the same device ( 1 device, yet so many different build # )
You should try and get the data connection functional first ( home wifi )... then go into "settings--about device---system update" and push the system update button to see if there is an update available for you
FYI... in order to visit market... you need at least a gmail/google account. ( it is still strange that you don't have market icon/app pre-installed

I have checked, no gmail, only the "normal" email application. There is application called minimap, half of the menus are in chinese, other half in english.
There is some other nonstandard market application. It is gohd something. There is chinese applications on that market. Nothing usefull there.
This Acer is Asia version.
I have android phone which works here in China, android market on that phone works also. This Acer A500 looks very very limited. I guess I need to root it to make it usefull.

It's just sound weird from what you've listed of the device's contents

I puchased Iconia in china and got the same issue : no google market but a GoMarketHD !!!!!!

To the best of my knowledge, Android Market in not available in China.
I'm sure if you had it installed and it was tied to a Chinese @gmail account or whatever, downloads would fail.
The chances are the only option would be to root and ROM the tab ***I'm just guessing*** OR you'll have to find some other way to circumvent the system checks. Your ISP might not even allow it - the Marketplace itself might not even allow incoming connections from China - I don't know.
Others might be more knowledgeable about this issue.

To be honest, it sounds like rooting the tablet and installing another non-Asian ROM on it would be the best solution.

well I have an HTC Desire which I purchsed in China as well and google market is working fine !
yeah I think I am going to root it ......

Look for the honeycomb version of market here on xda and sideload it. Any of the tablet forums here probably have of posted. Then just download gmail once that's installed right from the market.

[HOW TO] Install Google TTS (Text To Speech) Software Noob (Simple) Version

In this Noob series we will look at How to: Install Google Voice Search with Speech Recognition Software Noob (Simple) Edition.

then you already have Google Voice Search with Speech Recognition Software. It was included with the google_apps package. You may ignore this tutorial.

Speech Recognition Step 2: Extract VoiceSearch.zip to VoiceSearch on your Desktop
Speech Recognition Step 3: Copy libvoicesearch.so, UniversalSearch.apk and VoiceSearch.apk from the folder VoiceSearch to the Download folder on your Kindle Internal Drive
Speech Recognition Step 4: Using Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, copy /sdcard/download/libvoicesearch.so to /system/lib/libvoicesearch.so change the libvoicesearch.so permissions to Owner: Read Write Group: Read Others: Read
Speech Recognition Step 5: Using Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, copy /sdcard/UniversalSearch.apk to /system/app change the UniversalSearch.apk permissions to Owner: Read Write Group: Read Others: Read

How do I use text-to-speech (“read to me”) feature on Kindle?
Kindle can read text to you. In books and periodicals where text-to-speech is enabled (publishers may opt-out of the feature) you can start, stop and pause either by going to the text settings screen by pressing “Aa” button or by using the hotkeys: Shift-Sym to start/stop and once it’s running – spacebar to pause/resume. In the text settings screen you can also configure speech speed and switch between male and female voice. To start reading from specific location, select the location with 5-way controller and start text-to-speech.

That depends if the application calls to the VoiceSearch.apk module. Yes, it should work if the application was designed around the GV Module. Since we left everything intact, there is nothing to stop another application from calling and using the VoiceSearch.apk module. This is where people like you come in: Install it, then test applications that were design to work with Google Voice and reply back with the results.
If the application was not designed around the VoiceSearch.apk, there is little chance it will work. So, if you have a friend with an Android, ask them what applications use Google Voice. For example, I know Google Voice works with the VoiceSearch.apk module when you search in Google Voice.

You are correct, there can be a bit of confusion. In our How to: Install
ICS Google Applications with Google Voice Search Noob (Easy) Version
we actually use the Talk.apk which Google Voice. The problem is that we
have not found a way (yet), to pip this over to applications like Voice Chatting. Although we are
working on it and should have this functional by February 2013. Either way, this step will be
a Prerequisite in getting the entire package to work properly. Start here, give us feedback.

Great Tutorial. I've got it installed and it works great. It crashes on my KFTT when I ask it to make a note for me. It tries to attach a file and fails to find an app I think.

Wow, I am sorry. I know I responded to this Thread 8 plus hours ago but my response never made it
into the XDA Thread. Hmmmm. Anyway, you nailed it on the head! The problem when you tell AVC Alice
to "Open Note", she should respond with her intended action. Now what she wants depends on the Launcher used.
In my case, I use Go Launcher EX and HD, she detects this and knows to call up "Go Note Widget", so this
needs to be installed and setup. Just take your time, go into Settings, you will see there is a lot to AVC.
So far how do you like AVC? Fun stuff and really helpful once it has been setup.

Anyone find a way to access the voice in/out settings? I have a couple of Ivona TTS voices I'd like to try on Alice.
TTS EXTENDED looked promising, but it either forced closed or froze. There might be a trick to it. Anyone?

Alice is great. I still can't get notes to work, it just says an error has occurred. I'll take a look at it again later though. Also alarm clock plus crashes every time I attempt to access it's settings. I have moved it to my system folder and restarted and still same problem occurs.

Edit- It may have been the FB reader tts (deleted) or just low memory (I deleted some deadwood), but Alice & I seem to be on speaking terms again. Still hoping someone knows a way to access the tts-picking menus. I'd love to experiment w/voices. I tried several things last night, but no joy.

Yes AVIC Alice requires her space (memory) and if you do not give her space, she can become
snappy, kind of like PMS I guess. The message "an error has occurred" can be memory issues,
missing application (like if you say "Open Note", she requires Go Note), application conflict, etc.
We included this package since it is by far the best in the industry, like Dragon Naturally Speaking
is the best for a PC. I an excited to hear you are interested in experimenting with the voices. This
is exactly my goal, to improve the Kindle and spark enough interest to have others involved with
the development. Please send us responses as you work with AVC, we will be really interested
in your work. We have a few developers on site, so send me a reply with the details of your
interests with AVC and I will forward the request to my Senior Developers.

When you have AVIC Alice opened, look down at the home task bar, between the < arrow and the Magnifying Glass (Search) is a
upside down U with 3 lines through it. When AVC is open, press on this upside down U with 3 lines through it and you should
see a menu pop up. Do you see the menu options - Help - Text Input - Manager - Settings?

The choices see on my KFHD are "male, female & system" in settings.

want to do. Play with voices, custom responses, etc. Over 100 options added to Pro. The Basic Free

Go back to Google Play Store, search for AVC (Alice) Pro. Then click on the AVC (Alice) Pro Edition.
Does it show Installed? If yes, uninstall, reboot and reinstall. You are missing a lot:
Help > Help System
Text Input > Place to make Custom Voice Commands
Manager > Place to Manage Commands and Alias's to Contacts
Settings > Here you have about 80 Options inside of Settings
If you click on Settings > About us it will advise you of the Version.

Version 2.8. I did as you suggested reboot it all but it's made no difference in my menu. And it is the pro version. There are only 3 menu choices under voices.

[ROOT][HOW TO] Install Google Play Incompatible Android Apps Noob (Simple) Version

This is a simple Step-by-Step guide on How To: Install Google Play Incompatible Android Apps Kindle Fire 7" HD, Kindle Fire HD 8.9" and Kindle Fire 2 with Windows - Noob (Simple) Version. The main group steps are outlined with A, B, C while the sub-group steps are outlined with 1, 2, 3. We attempt to keep this tutorial updated regularly - adding information from the end users experience. We have recently upgraded the storage servers to increase uptime, you now have two options for the downloads both are ad free. Option one is a Dropbox Storage Server and Option two is a Ubuntu One Storage Server, if one is under maintenance you may use the other download link. When you are done with the tutorial, please take the time to post feedback, this is very important to us - without your feedback, we have no way of knowing if we are doing our job. Prerequisites:
1. Kindle Fire HD 7", Kindle Fire HD 8.9" or Kindle Fire 2 7"
2. ES File Explorer or Root Explorer from Google Play.
Some Android apps on Google Play claim to be incompatible with various devices. There’s a good chance that these apps will run fine on many of these devices – you can bypass this check with root access.
Some apps won’t actually work after you install them, but many will. This also solves problems with applications that will install but refuse to play – for example, Boat Browser with the “this device is incompatible” message.
A) Editing Build.prop
The build.prop file contains a few strings (bits of text) that identify your Kindle Fire as KFTT. If you edit this file, Google Play and other apps will think you’re using a different device than you actually using. Be very careful when editing this file – we’ll just be editing a few tiny parts of it. If you edit other parts, you could cause serious problems with your device.
First, launch the ES File Explorer app. Open its Settings screen and enable the Root Explorer and Mount File System options. You may also want to enable the Up to Root option on this screen, so you can easily tap the Up button and navigate to your root directory.
Step 1: Navigate to the /system/ directory on your device and locate the build.prop file.
Step 2: You should create a copy of the original build.prop file elsewhere – long-press on it, select Copy, and then Paste it into another folder – say, your /sdcard/Download folder.
Step 3: Now you’re ready to edit the file. Long-press it, select Open As, select Text, and select the ES Note Editor application
Step 4: Look for the ro.product.model and ro.product.manufacturer lines. These are the important ones.
Step 5: Change these lines to pretend your device is another model. For example, to imitate a Nexus S, use these lines:
ro.product.model = Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer = samsung
Step 6: After making this change, tap the menu button and select Save.
B) Final Steps
Step 7: Go into the Settings screen, select Applications, select Manage Applications, tap the All category, and select the Google Play app. Clear its cache and data, and then restart the Kindle Fire.
Step 8: Open Google Play and you should be able to download apps that claim they’re not compatible with your Kindle Fire. Applications, Games and Browsers that detect your device should also work, too – Gameloft games seem to be particularly guilty of this. Some apps may still not install or work with your device for other reasons — for example, Google Chrome won’t work on pre-Android 4.0 devices, Bluetooth Tether fails on the Kindle. Some apps may be restricted to certain countries so do not break these rules.
Step 9: Most applications from Google Play Store are installed in the /data/app folder. There are many cases where the application will fail when first launched. If you experience an application that suddenly Stops, move the application to /system/app and change the permissions to User: Read Write | Group: Read and Others: Read. Then reboot your Kindle. If the application continues to fail, please open a post in this thread and we will have our developer work on a solution.

- After changing the two lines and clearing out the Store app cache and data, I restarted and went back to Play.
- The three apps I was looking for were still not available to me (Fandango, Boat Browser and Chrome)
- I actually downloaded another app store (1Mobile Market) and downloaded all three apps which I installed and ran without problem.
- Also, I thought that perhaps it was not enough to change the two lines you mentioned (product model & manufacturer) so I tried this again with additional changes to brand (changed to samsung) model (changed to nexus s) and device (changed to nexus s) and then I saved the file, cleared cache and data from the google play store and again sought to gain these three apps which were are "not compatible" with my device.
- Unfortuntately, the Play store did not change the status for those apps --they all remained "not compatible" for the device.
- One good point I gained out of this so far is that I have found another pretty good market to get apps to sideload on my KFHD7.
- One question (please!), can I leave the build.prop identities (model, manufacturer, brand, name, device) in their changed state (samsung/nexus s) or is it better to revert them back to the Amazon Kindle for some reason?

What I think is happening is the vendors are given two options on how to read the model one reads the build.prop data while the other executes a simple 'android.os.Build.MODEL' request. It looks like most vendors are turning to the latter. They may also query the device fingerprint.
This is great info, this is what we were hoping for:good: - your feedback so we can improve the process and make it work 100% of the time. Give us 24 hours to look at all angles and then we will post an update that will solve your problem.
Leave the build.prop data as is, there is no disadvantage leaving the name changed.

Many free versions such as all of the Angry Birds games are still incompatible from the Play Store even with this edit, yet they work perfectly fine if sideloaded, guess that's more to do with the fact Amazon App Store only having the paid versions & asked Google to block them.

You nailed it. Amazon and Google have a very tight relationship. As a matter of fact, if you watch the traffic when you purchase something from Amazon Software App Store, you will see something very interesting. The purchase traffic routes through Amazon but the download request is processed on the same server array as ................. you guess it, Google.

Actually just looked Amazon do have the FREE versions but only of the first 4, Star Wars is the only paid app without a FREE version, strange they would block the rest, puzzling!

A sketchy workaround (because who knows where they're sourcing their apks) would be to install blackmart, aptoide or similar alternative market and install it from there.... What I can say that it works, but I don't fully endorse it because again, I don't know where they source their apps.

Yeah it says it's unregistered or something a long those lines, only thing to do is put back the correct details that you changed or if you copied the build.prop beforehand copy it back to system/ & reboot.

This makes sense, the reason? Swipe Keyboard thinks you have copied the software, here is a fix. Go into More+ > Applications > Installed Applications - find Swipe. Clear the Cache and User Data, then remove Swipe.
Then install our software and wipe the User Data and Cache : Kindle Fire HD and 2 First Aide MAJOR UPDATE 02/14/2013 at 21:48 Rev4.2.22
Reboot the Kindle. Go to Google Play Store and reinstall Swipe. The issue will disappear.

This method works on about 60% of the vendors. It depends on how the vendor reads the make and model. There is another method will will be posting that will take care of the issue 100% of the time, give us a few days and we will post the additional work.

The reason may have to do with the contract that Amazon has signed with Google Play, since there appears to be little rhyme and reason.

Pleas extract Instagram_3.4.0.apk.zip ad Instagram_3.4.0.apk then install on your Kindle. You may use ES Explorer to install Instagram_3.4.0.apk by clicking on the Instagram_3.4.0.apk program and wait for "installed successfully". Once you have installed Instagram_3.4.0.apk be sure to move Instagram_3.4.0.apk from /data/app to /system/app check the permissions of Instagram_3.4.0.apk in /system/app they should be: User: Read Write Group: Read and Others: Read - be sure to reboot prior to using Instagram 3.4.0.
If you run into any issues with the installation, just post the question here or in our Backup/Recovery thread.

We are a little confused? Can you please clarify?
This is for Google Play and we do not use any APK"s in this tutorial. This tutorial allows you to install programs from Google Play that is accidentally blocked due to "incompatible" message. We have found this message is erroneous about 80% of the time, so we decided to find a way around the issue. Now there may be issues with certain packages that require Jelly Bean, this will not work for the packages designed for Jelly Bean but this workaround does work for the other packages.

My reply was directed toward someone who had a problem with a specific application where the application was still claiming to be incompatible in the play store. I offered a workaround that does not use the play store, but instead uses an alternative market application. My comments about APKs were in reference to the applications provided by these alternative market applications.

There's an even easier way now. side load market helper.

This app "fools the android market into thinking you have a nexus 7, or a galaxy S 3 or a couple of others.
Root is required. Change is temporary and won't touch your build prop.
I've tested it and it works as advertised.

NST keyboard for other languages

Is there a way to install keyboard for other languages on rooted NST so that books in other languages can be searched too?

I do not know for sure but if I were on your place maybe trying to use jokers for the missing characters is good place to start? For example you are searching for title named Rosé and you type in the search box Ros? or Ros* instead. That might work for Latin script.

Multiling keyboard 1.1.7 has the capability of using many languages other than English (you may need plugins...I did not investigate very deeply). Whether that would allow it to do what you want, I'm not sure.
Although it's not as clean looking as the stock keyboard (keys are more or less black...), I value this keyboard because it allows you to copy and paste from one place to another. To my knowledge there is no other way to access the paste buffer on the NST. Also a lot of fluff, but hey, it's free!

Keyboard apps should be copied into /system/app, permissions: rw-r-r, with a reboot. That's the good news. The bad news is that B&N removed the "guts" needed to change keyboards without getting into a database.
I know of two other options: Nook Color Tools which, despite it's name, has a few options that are useful for the NST. BUT, you must resist the temptation to poke around in the app because some of the options will trigger a factory re-image without warning. Nook Color Tools should be copied into /system/app, permissions rw-r-r, with a reboot. The second option is my Nook Settings app which, among other things, has a call to the native Android keyboard selector. You don't have to keep the app if you don't want it, but it's an easy way to get access to keyboard changes--and other things not available from the stock Settings app.

Thanks a lot. Following your instructions, I installed the Multiling keyboard, and Nook Color Tools ( haven't tried your Nook Settings yet, but probably would be same ). Seems Multiling Keyboard takes over, but press the middle big "English" key, there appears no other options. Check the apk (com.klye.ime.latin-1.apk), there are many xml files there. So my question is: do I need to install other plugins for various languages, e.g., chinese?

In the settings/setup for the keyboard (where you go when you tap on the app icon) option #4 is for enabling languages--I'm sure you've seen that already. It does state there something about plugins. Waaaay down the list there are various Chinese alternatives. I didn't get anywhere with this. Sliding over the spacebar did nothing.
Check out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=klye.hanwriting. I tried version 3.3 from another source but it would not install, so unless you can scare up an older version, you might be out of luck.
Whether MyAlpha is needed as well (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kl.myscript) I don't know. Again, you'd probably have to track down an older version that will run on Android 2.1.

You are right, I was able to switch to a Chinese input keyboard, but simply couldn't get the Chinese characters to appear. Doesn't seem to be font issue, as the space key does show Chinese characters correctly. Also tried French ( francais ), but no French accent either. I guess I need to learn more how to use this keyboard. Your instructions on installation totally work fine. Thanks again!

Well, not much success here either. First I had to enable swiping the spacebar to change languages. That took me awhile to figure out. I have most of the app functions deselected since I only need a regular keyboard and the cut/paste feature. I was able to get German and Greek to both work properly. I agree that French seems lacking in accent marks but I did note that the standard English QWERTY arrangement was not used in French, so whatever that may mean.
FWIW I managed to track down the Pinyin plugin (eventually replaced by the hanwriting plugin). The keyboard settings shows it as installed but it does not seem to do anything with it. Selecting just the plain "Chinese" option (no plugin) gives a memory error. There is probably enough stuff in the DroidSansFallback font to display some form of Chinese (the device Localization options include Chinese, after all) but that doesn't seem to make its way to the keyboard app.
I also located a copy of the MyAlpha app which is suggested as a "font problem" fixing thing. Doesn't seem to do anything.
So...I've attached both apps. Probably you should contact the developer. He/she might be able to give you the information we are apparently missing.

Thanks. I tried these apks too, plus some others. None worked. MyAlpha is for some other "rare" languages, Chinese or Latin languages are not included, since I guess they are already installed in most Android systems.
I already sent an email to the developer. Not sure though if he/she is still active in this development. Will report here if getting response from him/her.

Just bought HD10 11th (2021) 7.3.2.1. How to block updates and what to do?

Bought HD 2021, no ads version
In short:
1. Need to block the updates. How do I go about it? I have a router, so blocking the traffic to Amazon maybe?
2. I'd love to completely disconnect the tablet from Amazon. I wish to gain maximum intrussion on my privacy, so I'd love to get rid of Alexa etc. But if there's something which improves the chances of increasing compability with older apps installed from a pre-downloaded files, not from Google Play etc. I'd like that too. Basically "what would you do in the first place". Aside from the looks. I don't really care how my icons arrangement looks like or if I can get somewhere in 2 clicks instead of 3. Not sure if the launcher swap is for me then.
After spending some time googling, I found that there's no way to install LineageOS on this one. And people talk about bad 7.3.2.2 update. (I have 7.3.2.1)
So, please help a noob with some simple step-by-step advise on what should I do (no need to tell me the actual steps of each procedure, I can google, but keep in mind I'm a total noob to Android and PC-Android apps, so please don't use shortcuts which prelong my future googling by 1000x, thanks )
I just powered it on, checked the firmware version, and didn't connect the internet to it yet.

OK, so I needlessly worried after finding a 5 method list of removing the auto updates and comments about none working, and thought Toolbox is mainly for changing launchers.
To answer most of my questions:
- Toobox allows to disable the updates, has ALL the options nicely explained and you can just read through all the menu items to learn what to do and what's what. It allows to remove the spying Amazon crap (Alexa), allows to sideload apps without using any stores (not even google account required, I guess ), restores Google Play access and gives direct access to the filesysem for easy file transfer. Among other.
Awesome thing. I didn't finish using the Toolbox yet, but seems like I'll be able to use the tablet now.
I have a new question though. If my OS version is from 2021, and I don't want the new updates, what about security vulnerabilities? Am I now an easy target?
