HiFi DAC on Custom ROMs - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Questions & Answers

Hello. Someone else on this forum made a similar post but the thread quickly turned into a heated debate about the sound quality of the phone itself, so I have no choice but to make a new thread.
I use headphones all the time, so I would like to be able to use the Hi-Fi DAC on Paranoid Android Quartz Alpha. In MIUI, I was able to enable it using the built in setting, however there is no such option in Paranoid Android. An XDA user named androidexpert35 posted a Magisk Module, and later an app, to enable the HiFi DAC, but I'm not sure if it's legit. He's a little shady, because XDA blocked his account, accusing him if being a pirate.
I've looked all over the Internet, but I wasn't able to find anything useful. Is there any way I'm able to use the HiFi DAC on Paranoid Android, or on any other custom ROM for that matter?

FYI: Please don't reply saying "It doesn't matter" or "the sound quality is not that different." That's exactly what people did on the previous thread, and the discussion went waaaaay off topic.

I guess I could use that instead, but it's a lot more complicated than just using what's already there. Wouldn't you want to just use a DAC that was certified for Hi-Res Audio?

There's a Dirac enhancer port made by UltraM8. Check that out. It's the same hifi enhancer used in Miui.

What's Dirac? Do I have to download an app before I can install the addon? Also, should I install the "Hardware Hexagon" addon? The link to Hardware Hexagon seems to be broken.

Maybe UAPP will work? It is supposed that it installs DAC driver but I am not shure if it'll detect an internal one.
Seems that Dirac is a software enhancement. Hardware add-on is not available to download so I guess it's not possible to enable internal DAC without it.

Yeah, I just reverted back to stock. Thank you for all your support!

Internal dac is independent of dirac & stuff.
For enabling in custom roms you'd need to check if drivers are present under the respective directories under roo (mostly should be) & then modify system.prop file to enable it.

Extended UI hay the same menu/options, same HIFI toggle, just not entirely sure that it was working

I gave up on DSP Manager after it never seemed to play music via the right profile (eg, bluetooth headphones would often be played with the "speaker" profile, or other shenanigans)
Then I discovered Vipers Audio! And never looked back... (I have this running on my Note 3)

Wow thanks for the prompt reply dude. I agree Dsp isn't perfect, but it would help compared to stock, it's really awful imo.
So, in your experience has Viper improved the external speaker experience? I'm not so fussed with the 3.5, it's the external sounds that are bugging me.
Thanks

I haven't used it for the external speaker (but it supports this, just as DSP Manager does), but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you were to try it.
FYI: I use the "Lock effect mode" to force my Bluetooth audio profile onto all audio outputs, works a charm.

Yes, you need root to complete the install. It goes something like this: install it like a normal APK, open it, it will ask for root privs, once granted, it will autoinstall the audio driver, and then all you need to do is restart. Job done!

Just a thought tho - the Note 3 external driver is small, doesn't it distort easily driving bassy beats?

Yeah, heres my profile I use: *lots* of bass via the Dynamic Subsystem module, EQ that brings out the highs, and the "Extreme Headphone V1" listening device.
The profile files go under your SD Card under the viper4android/profiles directory (if the folder doesn't exist, try saving a profile first to autocreate it)

Dude.....seriously?
Bass is driven by the amount of air the driver can push - Base is omni-directional (i.e.you feel it rather than hearing where it's coming from) so it doesn't really matter where you put your bass unit from a surround sound setup.
If you think the external speaker is going to give ANY sort of bass, you're seriously misguided, sorry!
If the frequency is too low then the unit just won't play it, that's why speakers have a frequency range.

Equalizer problems: sound gets "less" when using it

hello,
i've searched now for a while and could not find a solution for this problem:
on my device (and this was the same with my note2) and on stock kernels i could not get the equalizer function properly.
the stock equalizer does not alter the sound in the right way, in fact it makes it LESS "loud" on the opposite frequencies i want to adjust.
example: if i want to add heights the bass goes down significantly, but no hights are added. same for adding bass: the heigts go down, but the bass level did not increase. if i turn the EQ off, the sound get much louder then, although i adjusted the typically "U" formed curve!
as far as my search showed this is a problem for other people as well, here in the note3 forum there are almost no postings regarding this.
is your EQ working as expected?
what apps do you use? stock music player or something different? i use google play music, but its the same for other apps as well.
even tried to remove all other music apps (as suggested in some postings) due to possible conflicts, but this wont help! i also installed a different equalizer app (and removed the stock one, after only disabling it) from the market, same results.
on my note2 i had the same issue, the only thing which helped was to flash a custom kernel. with this i was able to use equalizers the way they were meant!
does someone has some experience here?
regards,
markus

thx for the answer,
i used poweramp for years, and it did me an excellent job! but for convenience i switched to google play some time ago, and since then i have this equalizer problem with samsung stock kernels! if i remember right this is since the introduction of 4.0 or 4.1!
because of my migration to google play i would need a solution how to get the equalizer right, and i'm curious if other people have the same problem! and: if someone managed to get it work!

Now I know this is many years old, but I see from your sig you have an S8+ now. Do you still have this issue with the stock EQ? I'm getting exactly the same behaviour with the S8+ and the S9+, turning any slider up just seems to cut the entire volume down, it's so annoying!

Sound mods? Anyone using one, or more?

For those that are rooted, are you using something other than Dolby Atmos for your EQ? The more I use Dolby Atmos, the more I dislike it. It sounds good, but I have issues with it:
1) It seems to enable and disable at random
2) It'll switch profiles between songs - If I like my custom profile better, it will switch back to music on the next song. Not all the time, but most of the time
3) I'll have a preset *almost* the way I want it, but when I go back to adjust just one slider, like 20 seconds later, the EQ completely re-adjusts and I have to basically start over
4) (probably the biggest reason) It isn't comparable with my favorite music player, n7. Dolby crashes and cannot be started again, even if you uninstall n7. Only fix is a factory reset.
I seen the thread about v4a, but it makes Dolby Atmos crash. If I were to freeze Dolby, or uninstall it using Tibu, or ROM Toolbox, can I install v4a or a different sound mod and have it work?
I see no point in installing a sound mod when we have a Hi-Fi chip + Dolby Atmos

Hello
I tried to use poweramp, but this isn´t dolby Atmos enabled, but, I ´m using Jetaudio plus... and this works PERFECT, remember that this sound app was designed for use in high -end mp3 players ( like cowon), and i can say with full confidence that works great with dolby atmos, boosting very well the music in the speakersphone, in the bluetooth car stereo and headphones ( wired and wireless)... this app bringing bass optimization ( in the original speakersphone the bass is very poor), let me know your experience, i´ll try to help

My understanding is that the HIFI chip doesn't work with apps that don't support it. Is that wrong? I never notice it and Atmos doing much for Google Play Music

Yep, I used Poweramp for while like this.....But, as bad as my reasoning sounds, I don't like the UI of Poweramp any more - Very Gingerbread-ish. It was fine for the last 3+ years, but I guess I'm just tired of it. I'm, anxiously, awaiting the new release of Poweramp (I'm a beta user) that has the redesigned interface.
In the meantime, I've found a few other players that work well that "look prettier".
- Shuttle+ has been my #1 "backup" player for the past 4 or 5 years. It's simple, but has most of the features I need
- RocketPlayer - I found on Amazons app store for $3.99 (vs Google Play for $6.99) and I really like it too!
But, the reason I started this thread is because I dislike Dolby Atmos. It constantly resets, turns off, changes profiles and was incompatible with my favorite player (n7 Player) - Actually, it's more like n7 is incompatible with Dolby Atmos and disables it system wide when installed. Prior to B27, it crashed Dolby Atmos and the only way to get it back was a factory reset.
So, in order to avoid Dolby Atmos and use players I liked and still have system wide audio enhancements, I was looking for a good system-wide sound mod. I know Viper4Android is the #1 go to for that, but I had a few issues with it not turning on and having to re-start my phone. But, in all honesty, I flashed a mod package that had V4A included, not as a stand-alone. So I may try it by itself, without the rest of the mod?

I'm on One Plus 3T Oreo 8.0 rooted, years using V4A and n7 player. Dolby Atmos alone seems to me a better solution. V4A is absolute freedom (a mess) and didn't find a player better than n7. Are you on Oreo version? You already have all we are looking for!

Well, I actually no longer have the A7.....The Samsung S8 lured me away with the big "edge-to-edge" screen. But honestly, I wish I still had the A7 sometimes.
But, the S8 is achieving the main results I was looking for...... I was flashing different ROMs on the A7, almost daily, sometimes 2-4 times daily - Plus all the different mods out there for rooted phones. I was literally addicted and would do this for 4-5 hours nightly. I had to step away from it all and get a phone that was not easily rooted...... My choice was an iPhone or a Samsung. Since I HATE iPhones, I went with the lesser of the 2 evils.
Ok, off my soap-box.... I do miss the amazing sound of the A7!
I find Dolby Atmos unreliable too, but really only use it when playing a video. For music I just use Jet Audio HD plus. Sounds great. Actually un-modded mine and my Son's Huawei Mate 7 and installed Jet instead of having a permissive system and Viper.
This is probably the best phone I've had in regards to being on a stock ROM. I would look at root and debloat if no updates were coming though. Easy to un-root it once de-bloated.

You can have enforcing + viper if you use the magisk module though
That's good to know!
I haven't used Magisk yet but for my phone, even if I mod it, it needs to be un-rooted again for root checking apps. Kind of limits mods. I assume Magisk is like Xposed, needing root? I know nothing about it yet.

No, Magisk doesn't need root, it provides root for a ROM. It's an alternative to SuperSU.
Magisk has the ability to hide root from some apps if needed. Items like banking apps and whatnot may still work and SafetyNet passes in most cases.
From what I've read. Never needed to do any of that myself.

Lol... The whole point about Magisk is being able to modify the system without triggering safetynet. Basically you don't have to unroot or anything, it's like you have your phone stock but you can have a bunch of modifications installed...
It was an alternative to SuperSU. But right now I can say with all certainty that SuperSU is an alternative to Magisk. It makes very little sense to use SuperSU especially since those Chinese guys bought it and made a mess with v2.80

Serious Simple Audio Improvement (?)

Ok I'm an audiophile musician, as many of you I think
and, though stock audio just works I'm trying to look at audio mods here
I looked in many threads and I can see that ARISE is very well known, supported and loved, but looks like is very customizeable and confusing....
dolby atmos in apps section doesn't work well, it lowers volume and...well, I can't feel any improvement
viper4android should be nice, but I never tried it
now...what are you using? things that work nice and stable, with quality enhancements....don't need thousands of profiles or eq since I'm a big fan of flat sound (the way is meant to be listened)
Thank you for your attention, once we'll have some satisfactory answer I'll make a poll and a general AIO audiophile thread with all working options as referral.
EDIT: ARISE audio system simple guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/r-s-e-sound-systems-auditory-research-t3379709
go to this thread, don't be scared, just search for lastest deuteronomy zip and flash it
you will find a nice app called viper4arise that will let you manage settings separately for every audio output with simple and nice UI
you can also import presets and plugins, but it's secondary.
Im going to tune in on this. Would like to install ARISE on my nexus (comes with Viper4Android) but there are so many versions to choose from, it gets a bit confusing.
Any tips on which ARISE works for our phone on 7.1.1 ?
ARISE is the right answer. It's customizable for true audiophiles but simply flashing it seriously improves audio quality without you having to tweak anything. Seriously. I know there are several zips for ARISE. Just make sure you get the most current stable release (Deuteronomy 2.3.3) and I usually go for the smallest zip file because I don't need all of the extra stuff like Dolby Atmos and whatnot. It comes with a modified version of the Viper4Android app that allows you to tweak settings to your liking. The app, by default, is setup for novices or people that don't need to get too specific with any settings so you can boost bass, enable clarity options, spectrum extension, etc. by toggling the switch next to it. Simple as that.

ARISE is the right answer. It's customizable for true audiophiles but simply flashing it seriously improves audio quality without you having to tweak anything. Seriously. so. you suggest to flash deuteronomy (lastest) and...just that? what about plugins, the prop editor that comes with hell of documentation...profiles and stuff...none of that?
if you're sure it works, is stable enough, simple and it has graphic (not text editing or changing files on system) settings through an app....I'm going to test it right now....

There's a zip with v4a profiles, Copy it to v4a directory in sdcard and choose Audiophile 10.0

I never did any of that. I just flashed, booted up, went into the ARISE V4A app and toggled the options I wanted. There was an immediate difference in audio quality. You can toggle the options while playing music and hear the difference.
EDIT: Oh. Make sure to disable MusicFX or whatever that nonsense is. Settings > Apps > Show system apps > MusicFX and disable.

ok! so this is a solution. I'm going to try it right now....
for anyone else who pass here, if there is any other thing you are using please reply here! we want options!
EDIT: Ok guys I tried ARISE and it works damn well, I can manage audio settings without profiles since I know how to tune that, but main mportant thing is that it works.
Now, regarding higher bitrate? or anything else?

Really depends on what you're playing the music on. I usually enabled Spectrum Extension (0.4 strength) as a lot of my music is 320kbps MP3 and Bass Boost (default settings) for Bluetooth and Headset (3.5mm jack) while enabling "Speaker Optimization" for the speaker. I mainly use the bluetooth audio in my car and while my car stereo isn't that great but I did throw some Kickers in the front doors. Spectrum Extension is awesome, but make sure to disable it if you're listening to any FLAC files.

I really only listen to music through headphones/AUX in the car so I edited some of those to the audiophiles info in the post. I turned on the spectrum extension and will see how I like it since it's all streamed from spotify (no flac).

Why do you disable MusicFX?
And it's necessary on stock too?

Because it interferes with ARISE / V4A. If you're completely stock with no audio mods there's no point to disabling it.

APT-X LDAC enabled by enabling Programmer Options?

I Enabled Programmer Options in my stock MI A2 (no root, full stock), then among the options for programmer's a menu item about BLUETOOTH CODEC is shown, there you can choose among APT-X, APT-X HD, LDAC etc
I have no APT-X nor LDAC enabled BT Headphones to test it, so I ask to those with APT-X or LDAC to try this (at youtube you find how to enable programmer mode), then choose the BT codec of your's headphones and try, then comment here.:good:
Does not stick for me
Ldac did not work with a bt Sony speaker that supports it
Nope, unfortunately.
So it's an useless setting, or hopefully a placeholder ...

Not exactly. Google started natively supporting these libraries with Oreo if I'm not mistaken - but supporting it does not mean supplying it. Theoretically we should be able to add the necessary files in order to make it work (like other phones have) - but I've tried every magisk module I could find, and none of them worked.
It does exist but I'm not sure if it works.
