Flip cover for Galaxy A20 - Samsung Galaxy A20 Questions & Answers

I have a flip cover for my Galaxy A20.
It will turn the screen off and on but I have no idea how it works.
It only works on the stock Rom
I can't get it to work on any GSI.
The only proximity sensor I can find is an ear proximity sensor and only works when I'm on a call.
It's not magnetic.
The only thing I can think of is that it works with the camera focus sensor somehow.
Anyone have any ideas?

Gsi does't worth it on our a20 until custom kernel/vendor support...Use stock one ui its alot better and optimized for a20 rather then gsi.
i'll try make custom oneui when i am free..got ubuntu.

The screen doesn't respond to any other object.
It only works with the flip cover.
More research.
Must be magnetic.

We also have a physical proximity sensor, called "COM.SAMSUNG.SENSOR.PHYSICAL_PROXIMITY", and it's a STK3031 Proximity Sensor by Sensortek.
When i test it, it starts to blink, telling you its location and that it's working. You can see this happen for some seconds when you power on your phone.
By the way, i can see that sensor listed on the image you sent.

Yes.
Only the ear proximity sensor shows up

If a proximity sensor was involved then simply covering the screen with a magazine should turn it off.
This doesn't happen.
The solution is here.

CPUz doesn't give me any response when I test it.
It may be there but is not activated.
It is certainly not involved in the flip case otherwise as i have said, it should blank the screen when I cover the phone with anything other than the flip cover.
I also notice that the Ear Sensor is not active in the GSI that I'm on. I could clearly see it on stock.
It would be interesting to see if the proximity sensor could be activated

is this possible in WM phones, when you take the phone outa ur ear the screen lights comes on? just curious
I don't think there is a WM phone right now that has this ability, however most WM phone are set to turn off display automatically after few seconds when a call begins, and it turns on auto when you finish the call.
I just don't get the point of wasting the battery to power the IR sensor just to turn off the screen when its near your ear! when the OS can do that job in an easy way.
I'm not saying it's not cool thing to have , but it's not necessary.
cheers mate
Phones with light sensors can do this, such as the diamond.
Please ask your questions in the Q&A Section of the forums.
Touch HD/Blackstone has a proximity sensor, like the oh-so 'lovely' (ugh) iPhone.

yes there are wm phones with proximity and light sensors such as the the diamond/light, touch pro or fuze/light, touch HD/I think prox. the lg invite has a proximity sensor, I think the omnia has a prox too.
I think the light sensor is more versatile because u can have your phone adjusts it's backlight according to the amount of light around it.

Well, I wouldn't exactly say that. It has happened to me a couple of times that I accidentally ended a call with my cheek or by shifting the phone from one hand to the other and accidentally touching the screen. I have a Blue Angel, which is not exactly a small piece of equipment so changing hands during a long call is kind of a must (if you don't have a BT headset that is)...
Not a bad concept, however, duke911 has a good point. You can do this by software without having to have the IR, which is a pretty good drain in the battery, on all the time. Maybe a small script to change the lead time between the time the phone call starts and the time it takes for the screen to turn off. I don't know jack about programming but it doesn't seem like a difficult task...

A surprising fix for Proximity sensor problems

Hi there,
Quickly after installing a new screen protector sheet on my Motorola Defy, I discovered that it is causing my proximity sensor to be next to useless.
By peeling off the screen protector off the proximity sensor I verified the source of the problem. (The sensor worked properly without the protector sheet on it.)
I used a black permanent marker to mark out the proximity sensor area, to cut out a little window through the protector sheet with a knife.
Drum roll please, we arrive to the part where Newton got an apple to his head and Archimedes ran naked out of his house yelling "Eureka!",
The black permanent marker fixed the problem. once I painted over the proximity sensor (On the screen protector sheet of course!!), It started working fine again. Yeah. Weird.
Yes, Yes, I know, this is life changing information for many of us who just couldn't hang up after dialing the wrong phone number because of sensor problems...

wow.. epic fail on the part of the screen protector maker. did you bring this to their attention? good thing it has an easy, albeit, chinsy fix!
Long ago, I discovered something similar on the myTouch 3G Slide. That phone has a small rubber box cover over the proximity sensor, with a small hole for the sensor to peek through. When I changed the flex ribbon cable, the sensor wasn't working anymore. I eventually realized that on the old cable, there was that small rubber box over the sensor, & the new cable didn't have that. I put the rubber box over the sensor, & now it worked again. It seems that if the sensor is left wide open, it won't work right. I notice that on newer phones, the sensor is usually encased in its own little box in the housing. I guess they need most light around it blocked off in order to work right.

This is a well known fix for the proximity sensor issues with aftermarket replacement iPhone glass that doesn't have dark enough tint over the sensor.. (cheap import products not oem) good to know it works in this case too.

Proximity Sensor Issues fix

Hi all, had to post coz this produced such an excellent result for me. I'd had the same trouble many of us have had with screen still working in call leading to random button pressing or holding the phone away from ur ear and people not being able to hear u. I'd used the Proximity recalibrator and it worked at first but I had to keep decreasing the high/low values till it was right down to 3 on low 4 on high and even with this the screen only turned off intermittently. So search on YouTube for a disassembly video and watch it, take ur battery, sd and sim card out, pop out ur GPS antenna take out the 5 screws, take out ur volume button and take care of the volume button PCB as u take the case off. Clean the phone with a fine dry brush all round the sensor, ear speaker and front speaker grill. Before u put it back together gently and carefully bend the GPS contacts out a little to get better contact with the antenna. I put it back together and my proximity sensor is like new! I had to adjust Proximity calibrator to 28 low/ 29 high. Our DHD's are getting old now and I had plenty of crud in mine, bending the GPS contacts out has also produced excellent results with a far quicker fix even indoors. So my DHD will live on for a while longer, hope this helps u too.
Yep i do agree that this is a great fix, having done this myself.
Just make sure before doing anything to your DHD you set yourself up so you know which screws go where after you remove them. Also Lift the Sticker with the IMEI number on carefully if you rip it off forcefully you'll snap the volume ribbon.
It does work it also allows you to clean the speakers too and the camera len too.

I agree, i had troubles with prox. sensor too. So cleaning front speaker grill with dry toothbrush helped. Then i blow through with compressor and proximity sensor works like new.

[Q][SOLVED][Proximity Sensor] After Use Phone Stock App for call : Always ON

Hello,
The tittle resumes the situation : [Proximity Sensor] After Use Phone Stock App for call : Always ON
If I call or receive a call, my proximity sensor turn on (with disable screen proximity ON or OFF !) and it's never cut off, even when the unit is in standby (And more drain battery + dangerous for sensor hardware stay on 24hr/24) !!
I must take a soft reset for stop sensor until I get a new call emit or receive !
A soft reset for each call : I give UP :silly:
I've this problem since stock 4.4.2 and now i applies all OTA hoping that it will resolve but it've never been...
Any other stock applies use sensor like *#0*# or other Air Gesture function, the sensor operate normally... until I pass or receive a call !
An idea ?

Yes i use a screen protector but since the begining, the problem : infrared led of sensor is contant on...
but the sensor work great when i call cut the screen !
All right, I Wipe Cache & Data + Factory Reset and flash new ROM (recently uptade via OTA) and the proximity sensor functiunaly correctly since...
Old OTA uptade have generate a bug and the reflash + wipe solve problem.:good:
Reappear same problem... I see in the dark...
Just little different, first call, proximity cut functionally correctly and the sensor in not visible (low power proximity sensor infrared led ) and when I cut the call, 2 second after its appear in full power, I see the proximity sensor in hight level of infrared led !!..
Anyone a idea ?!?
Video shoot the bug...
http://youtu.be/sSF4HnpPYGA
I found the problem with an Appkiller, Universal remote App (Smart IR of Color Tiger) generate this problem with his task in rear, and if use phone, task block the proximity sensor in full emit with a drain battery associate !
After bug appear, kill task of Smart IR, the proximity sensor cut 3 second and on (the task re launch immediately), I erase app and no problem !
I had already tried to kill stains but unfortunately I do not have the view that the sensor was cutting briefly ... I was next to last!
The I made in total darkness and I saw the change! :cyclops:

Proximity sensor...

Hello.
I would like to ask about the operation of the proximity sensor in S20 (Exynos).
It sometimes happens to me during a call that the display does not go out when I hold it to my ear.
It's really few times, but it will happen.
Does the proximity sensor work at 100% or is it a defect?

When you are at a call, you'll see the top part of the screen flickering next to the front camera.
Thats the proximity sensor. Put a finger there to see if the screen goes dark.
If it does its working fine.
If it doesn't it's defective.

When I move the phone, the sensor flashes, when I don't move the phone, it does not flash, but the display goes out, but sometimes it happens that it doesn't go out until the next movement.
When I select the code *#77692#, the sensor still flashes and works at 100%.
When making a phone call, the sensor flashes only in motion, the pixel does not flash at rest, a lot of people have written to me that they have it the same.

Try going to settings- advanced features- motions and features. Then disable the lift to wake phone. That might be causing the problem.
