[Help] Galaxy Tab A SM-T580 displaying error - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Hey guys! Greetings from Spain
I've a Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T580 and it displays the following error each time I power on: "An error has ocurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software.".
I can not go to any menu or somewhere else and I've seen it's a common troubleshoot when root or flash custom ROMs, but I've never done anything like that.
I've already tried the following things:
Connect it with Smart Switch, but the software says my model is not supported. As I've seen in some guides with this troubleshooting, I've tried to test with an older SmartSwitch release or try some options with "More" button, like reinstall device drivers or use Emergency recovery software tool, but device was not displayed on the list and any of these options have worked.
Connect it with Samsung Kies, but device is on "Connecting" status everytime and nothing else happens.
Try to reinstall an official ROM with Odin, however, is not possible to put it in Download Mode as when I press Home + Power + Vol Down it reboots displaying again the same error.
Contact with Samsung support, but they just asked me to follow stupid steps for newbies and conclude telling me I should go to an official technical service and pay as is not under warantee anymore.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can suggest is to unplug it while showing the error screen, and let the battery run down completely. Then plug in a charger while holding the three buttons.

Pilot error.
You're not holding the 3 buttons for long enough. Keep held down until download mode appears.

Hi,
I have this problem with this same tablet. I've spent several days trying every option on xda.
The one solution that seem to work for some people is referenced in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79232815&postcount=40
I've tried to do this as well but odin fails while trying to flash system.img. Hopefully it works for you.
(somewhere in that same thread it said to get the "cellular south" firmware from sammobile and try to flash that as it is supposed to not have the FRP-lock feature which (among other things) blocks flashing from odin.)
After much grief with this tablet I think the best use case for it is to recycle it for parts, to use it as a paper weight or to throw it really hard into the head of the CEO of Samsung.

[Q] Is my Tab done for? Is it fixable? Help!

I'm having the following problems with my TAB and would like to know it's fixable. I treid almost everything to fix it without success. I'm hoping someone can help me. Anyone have these problems before?
1. Doesn't charge normally. It would charge but charge really slow like it's connected via us. It shows an x next to the lightening icon when I charge it using the original charger and cable.
2. I cannot go into recovery mode. I get the black screen with the white line. There's also no boot animation when it boots up.
3. The camera doesn't work. I get a fail message when I open it.
4. My computer doesn't detect it in download mode, kies or mass storage. My computer detect my samsung galaxy s i9000 without any problems so I know it's not the computer. I cannot change the firmware because my computer doesnt detect it.
5. I dont have the receipt to do a warranty repair. What are my other option?
AT&T SGH-i987
Firmware 2.2
Baseband P1000XXJHA
Kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #19
Build XXJMA
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!
Did you register your Tab with Samsung?
If so, they have a record of your purchase and will be able to provide support.
If not, then try this which I got from their online chat: Hope it helps.
"Kyle: To recover the device via the hardware keys, do the following:
Kyle: 1. Power off the handset.
Kyle: 2. Hold the Vol Down Key + Vol Up Key + Power Key for 15 seconds then release.
Kyle: 3.When the recovery screen comes up, use the volume up key and volume down key to navigate through the selections and the power key to select item.
Kyle: 4. Select Delete all user data to recover the device. To confirm, scroll down and select Yes – delete all user data. The phone reboots and again displays the recovery screen.
Kyle: 5. Select Reboot system to restart the handset again. "
Thanks but I cannot get to that recovery screen like I said above. All I get is a black screen with a white line when I try to go into recovery mode. I also purchase this used with no receipt.
U just need to flash a working rom. Try roto jm... in the dev forum
Your tab was modified. I wont blame Samsung if they wont fix it for u

How do i flash to a different rom if a computer wont detect it?
Do you have the latest kies installed? Is USB Debug on? If it still doesn't detect, have you tried android-sdk or heimdall. Each comes with usb driver. I find it hard to believe your PC doesn't detect the tab. I never heard such thing before unless you're the real first victim then...yeah, try to call Samsung and pay a fee.
Yes, I tried to use android-sdk and heimdall but they don't detect my TAB for me to do anything. I also installed the newest KIES software. I also don't understand why it doesn't detect it in download mode. This is the first time I encounter this problem. I flashed my Galaxy S I9000 phones many times without a problem. Is the combination of the firmware and kernal I have that is causing my computer not to detect the TAB?
Is there a way to root my TAB via an APK? I tried Z4Root but it's not working. It tries to acquirer shell and closes after a few vibrate. yes, debugging mode is on.

You've followed Heimdall's README and installed the included driver? Make sure you follow the instructions exactly.
If you have done that and your device still isn't recognised consider trying a another cable, USB port or entirely different PC.

Thanks for your advice but I already tried above. I didn't have any problems/trouble connecting my Verizon Tab and Galaxy S phone to the computers to change the roms. There is most likely something wrong with the Tab. I gave up and contacted Samsung yesterday. I sent the Tab to them yesterday and hopefully they won't charge me to fix it.

Need help on unfamiliar error screen. Image provided.

Just got the Note3 from a online seller who seems to be legit but when the phone was received via the mail, it didn't work as expected.
I've had some experience with android ROMs and rooting but those are mostly for the other phones, this is the first Samsung phone i got. Could you guys help and advise what to do to resolve this error?
I've actually downloaded Kies3 and use the emergency recover thing, but most of the times it couldn't detect the phone connection.
And on the rare occasion that it does detect something, it says that the model is incompatible with Kies3. Tried it with the old Kies too, but didn't work as well!
1. Turn off your device and reboot in stock recovery (Vol. up + Home button + Power button).
2. We need know your CSC for avoid problems.
3. Add one pic like the one attached pls.
Don't double post, i replied with everything you need in your other thread the same as this.

I think i bricked my new Samsung S7 edge help please ;_;

So i was rooting my phone with TMWP then my phone was encrypted so i used Odin with an original AP of my samsung device
in the progress of doing that i canceled the progress.
so now i keep getting An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch Pc software. so i did that but now i am at this step, telling me to put the phone in recovery mode but when i try to do that it keeps giving me the same error (An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch Pc software.)
Im freaking out right now if you guys could help PLEASE.

Probably the phone is not detected?
Sent from my SM-G925F
How are you getting to recovery mode?
Should be Vol Down + Home + Power all at the same time
Are you able to power off your device?
If not, press and hold Power + Vol Down until it vibrates or you see it turn completely off, then hold Home (while still holding Power and Vol Down).
Give that a shot to get to recovery.
I had this problem when i tried messing around with TMWP. I dont belive there is one for the S7 egde US models to my knowledge or at least not for att currently due to the us and international models having a different processors International having a Exynos 8890 and US models having a Snapdragon 820. Im pretty sure because of those having different processors TMWP needs to have a build for both processors to my knowledge fix me if im wrong.
Heres what i posted on another thread about trying to flash your phone back to stock and it not working.
Post:
So I would suggest going to this post here and downloading the ODIN 3.12
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
I was trying to unroot for a clean root and this one worked for me the one made by PrinceComsy did not work for the flashing the stock ROM but it did work for flashing the ENG Boot ROM. I used 3 out of the 4 file to flash the stock rom I didn't select the BL file at all but you can if you want.
If this help you or you need further/help assistance please feel free to reply to this post

I had the same problem. It is a screen that says something along the lines of 'Update failed' or 'an error occurred during update'. It turned out for me that that actually was recovery mode just with the error screen. Plugging it into Kies on that screen allowed the emergency firmware to work and fix my phone.

My samsung SM-G935FD has the same problem and I tried with Smart Switch and Kies but they say my device is not supported can anyone help???

Killed my phone, still in warranty - or not ? please help !

Hi all !
I have a Samsung A8 (model SM-A800F) which was working great. I ran Kingo Root to try to install Youtube ad free. The next time I restarted it, it didn't load, and restarted in an endless loop to where "Samsung" logo appears (then restarted again). I booted into System Recovery and chose to reset to factory, but it didn't help. Then I tried flash it using Odin in Download mode. I installed the Windows drivers, downloaded the 6.0.1 firmware for Vietnam (where it was purchased), loaded the file into the AP field, and once verified clicked Start. The progress was frozen when reaching mid-way every time I tried, until it said "an error occured while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software"...
I downloaded Smart Switch and installed in Windows, but the drivers were not able to install correctly, and failed on the component referring to the ID or something... while Modem driver was installed correctly and the phone appeared in Device Manager. Smart Switch didn't recognize my phone and said "unsupported device".
Now I cannot get the phone stay constantly ON, and the screen shuts down and loads in an endless loop, to the "Error occured" screen... When trying to boot to the ODIN Download page, it loads, I press UP for Continue, and then it again shuts down and loads to "Error Occured".
I tried to charge over night but it didn't help. It does the same thing when the phone is connected to the charger...
However it seems that by IMEI it is sill under warranty. I'm not sure if I voided it :/
Here's what the Download mode page says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-A800F
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
FAP LOCK: ON
Secure Download: Enabled
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0
AP_SWREV: 1
Would appreciate any help, this phone is almost new but now it's dead :/
Your warranty is not voided. Your Knox E-Fuse still intact.
Also this is for S8 not A8 forums.

No worries, your phone is not dead.
Try to find a firmware that correspond to the one you got :
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?exact=1&q=SM-A800F
and use ODIN : http://dl.sammobile.com/Odin3-v3.12.7.zip
You should be good to go.
EDIT : Also for that error occurred thing, try to be faster than it by starting odin flash before it appears.
Thanks,
The problem is that neither the error nor the Odin page would stay on for more than a few seconds. Once they appear, the screen would go dark after 5-10 seconds and then the "error" page would load again (after being darks for another 10 seconds or so). So I can never have ODIN or Smart Switch connecting to the device (the drivers won't connect in Windows)... making it impossible to upload any firmware.

Could you take a picture of that error ? I've never heard/seen such thing
Hi, thanks for the help !
The error is this:
http://statics1.grupoandroid.com/up...1850.jpg.d2bb2a8b77e4fba5fc6467f3d1547886.jpg
I *think* I have some direction... here's what I did/found:
- I installed Smart Switch on my Mac, and chose "Reinstall Device Driver" from the menu. Then restarted the MAC
- I loaded Smart Switch, and Chose "Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization". Then chose the "Device Initialization" tab
- Added the model number "SM-A800F" and the device's serial number (which are physically written on my device).
Smart Switch determined the firmware version to be used for initialization, as:
PDA:QC3 / PHONEG3 / CSCH4(XXV)
- Smart Switch asked to:
1. Power the device down
2. Load recovery mode by pushing Power+Vol Down+Home, then connect the device to the MAC and choose "Continue" to start the initialization...
The problem/s:
My device won't turn on at all, if I do not connect it to either the charger or the MAC (which acts as a supply source?) - which makes me think the battery is fully drained ? i.e when not connected at all, it won't power on.
But when connected to either the charger or MAC, it would bootloop endlessly. i.e it will load the "error" page mentioned above, shut down itself, reload again, shut down and so on.
(I have to mention, that when I first noticed the bootloop, I reset everything to factory settings, cleared cache etc, and it still bootlooped on the Samsung logo).
If when it shuts down during the loop, I push Power+Vol Down+Home, it would boot to ODIN recovery page, where I can push UP for the Download page, but it will still reboot and will again load into the "error" page, which will again reboot endlessly. If I take the charger off the device, it powers off and won't load with any combination of button push.
I also cannot just make it shut down when the charger is connected, using any of the possible button combinations...
I wonder:
- Is there there's a problem which prevents the battery from being charged at all ?
What's strange is that the original problem which made me get into this whole issue, was that is was endlessly booting to the "samsung" logo - but when I booted to System Recovery or Download/ODIN modes, it stopped rebooting endlessly and stayed on... it was also showing the charging indication when powered off... the battery was charging well ever since.
- Why would it bootloop when connected to the charger ? is it possible that the bootloader went bad during my attept to install firmware using ODIN ? I know it always went through the boot.img and recovery.img successfully and only got stuck at about 50% when installing system.img...
I think the current bootloop problem began only once the battery ran out of power. But why wouldn't it charge at all now ??? It's supposed to still charge in this state, isn't it ?

Hmmm, the thing is, the battery charging process is actually held on some kind of "mini-boot" OS on Samsung I believe, where the phone boots into a certain state, with that said mini-os to display the battery charging info and this kind of things.
My guess is that you *might* have, or more likely your phone did corrupt the flash at some point for x or y reason.
What I'd do is :
Let the phone on a charger a whole night doing its bootlooping thing. And see from there if the battery would charge.
I'd try another computer with Odin just to be sure something is not triggering the reboot process at some point.
And if all the above fails, you still have the warranty, so beside time, you would not be losing any money..
I'm going to write a long post. But I believe it will help a lot of people having a similar problem.
Long story short - problem solved! but it took much of my nerves (and time).
I'll start with the "warranty". The so-called Samsung "warranty" which basically worths nothing!
Calling Samsung international service center, they "informed" me that I must contact Samsung Vietnam, where I bought the device, although I am not there anymore... Needless to say the local dealer in my country refused to take care of this situation, saying Samsung's warranty is regional based, rather than international... which means, only Samsung in the original country where the device was sold in, are responsible for the warranty (and therefore repair!). I had a chat with a Samsung Vietnam representative, who just kept saying "I'm sorry", and refused to let me sent the device out to them for repair! asking me to "bring it to them", although I noted him a few times that I bought it as a tourist and I am not in Vietnam anymore.... Thank you Samsung !! From now on every traveler in the world will know they basically have NO WARRANTY if they buy any Samsung device in a "foreign" country while traveling abroad!
Now for the solution:
I started by letting the device staying connected to the charger overnight, which didn't help. With the OS now installed, I realize that the battery was NOT CHARGED ! it was completely drained, although connected to a charger for long hours... So, know from now on that if your boot data is corrupted, it may cause the device NOT TO CHARGE THE BATTERY at all. Luckily, my desktop PC could use the device while connected to it although the battery was empty, until the problem was sorted out. I did get a crash on my MAC tough (Log said it was USB related), while using Smart Switch, so one option is that it could not supply enough power to the device to keep it keep working at all, or working correctly... So my suggestion is to use a desktop Windows PC in this case, which can potentially provide more power to a device with 0% battery power.
After scratching my head, and considering removing the front panel for replacing the battery (a very risky procedure) I decided to keep on investigating....
I followed a youtube video who suggests that you should install Smart Switch on a PC, choose "reinstall driver" from the menu, restart the PC, then use Emergency Recovery and Initialization, enter the phone model number in the search box (as appearing on the back of the device) , and once it recognizes the model, also to enter its serial number. Here's the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yXQUFrEWg4
This basically brings up a popup message saying Smart Switch detects a compatible firmware for this device, and is about to download and install it. It then asks the user to do the Power+Vol Up+Home push combination trick + pushing UP once the page is loaded in order to "Continue" and bring up the ODIN Download screen, which worked for me if did that as soon as the device shuts down (in the middle of the bootloop). As I couldn't make it load at all with no charger connected, I had it connected to the charger, and once I saw the Smart Switch message asking to do the push combination, I quickly connected it to the computer using another cable which was already connected to the PC USB port on its other end.
Somehow, I could at last make Smart Switch finally start downloading the firmware from the web, and the device again disconnected (bootlooped), but luckily Smart Switch didn't care about it disconnecting, and kept on downloading the firmware. At about 85% of the progress bar state, I could find the downloaded firmware on the temp folders, which are described in this thread:
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f777/samsung-firmware-download-belongs-his-serial-number-2038404/
I had to make sure it wasn't still downloading, and watched the "last modified" state of the file to make sure they are not being downloaded anymore. CAUTION: although the AP was not downloading anymore, I know it was probably not good as ODIN couldn't verify it when I tested it. USE ONLY SMART SWITCH !
I quickly copied the folder to which the app extracted the BL and AP files it downloaded, and finally had an officialy bootloader (BL) image, which I could use in ODIN in order to reupload a correct, "official" bootloader to the device....
I hoped the device won't bootloop in the middle, but luckily ODIN was fast enough to send the image successfully, with a "PASSED" status, and the device booted with a nice "Samsung" logo directly to a System Recovery page!
What I exactly did, was loading ODIN, then loading ONLY the BL file into the BL field in ODIN, having it verifying it, and once verified I connected the device, and as soon as ODIN recognized it, pushed START. It managed to upload the image into the device in a few seconds! It seems then, that the bootloop was not caused by a bad battery, but as a result of a corrupt upload of an AP image through ODIN - or because I possibly was using an incorrect version when I tried to upload an AP files to the device on my first attempt to flash it.
Note that I did search for the correct, compatible AP file, by country and model (on Sammobile) but it didn't' work (stuck at 50% in ODIN) ! so I really suggest everyone TO ONLY USE SMART SWITCH if they want to be sure that the correct firmware is being used, and avoid similar situations...
I then deleted the temp files from the PC (the actual ones which were in the temp folder), reinstalled the drivers from inside Smart Switch (just in case), booted the device to Download mode (WHICH DIDN'T BOOTLOOP this time), let Windows installing the drivers (checked in Device Manager), then restarted the PC, and ran Smart Switch again. I repeated the procedure of loading Emergency and Initialization, entering the model and serial number, having it fully downloading the firmware (again) from the web, and installing the firmware into the device. This time it completed the process, and I finally had the device installing and booting into a fresh version 6.0.1 of Android!
Hope it helps!

help whit my samsung J5 please

Hi guys, I've been looking on the forums and i didn't find a way to solve my problem, my Samsung J5 J500m has the "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the smart switch PC software" screen. I've tried both smart switch and Samsung kies and it hasn't worked, the thing is that i don't have the "depuration usb" on, nor the eom unblocked, the phone interal memory is almost full and i don´t have any custom recovery such as twrp or others.
If anyone knows how to solve this or can send me to the right thread i would really appreciate it

You don't need usb debugging or oem unlocked to recover your phone. Smart switch's emergency recover detector isn't that reliable sometimes it doesn't detect devices in emergency recover mode. However there should be a second tab in smart switch to recover your phone. It's "device initialization", device initialization works similar like odin. If you don't have this tab then you probably installed a newer version of smart switch. If that's the case follow this instruction:
1. Uninstall current installed smart switch from your pc
2. Download this ealier version of smart switch from samsungs official download center.
3. Install it. Once you run smart switch you might get a pop up screen to update to the latest smart switch version: don't update it!!. press cancel.
4. Now reinstall usb drivers in smart switch: more > reinstall device driver. Make sure to disconnect your cable first.
5. if finished, locate to More > Emergency software recovery and initialization > device initialization
6. There is a section to enter your model name, enter SM-J500M. Press search.
7. Now you need to enter your serial number. As you can't access your phone to view your serial number, you can still find it printed on your phone packaging or behind your device's battery. Enter your serial number in S/N section. Press confirm. Note: New devices don't support "device initialization" but your device should be still supported
8. Now you should see a pop up window where you see something like "initialized version". Press Ok and let smart switch recover your device. You should see a bar appearing on your device screen. If you press "ok" be warned! this step will wipe all your data on your internal storage!
9. After it's finished your device should boot normal again.
Good Luck! :fingers-crossed:
It says "this devices don't support device initialization"
Thanks anyway,

Can you access odin mode (volume down + home button + power button to boot to odin mode)?
If yes, flash a stock firmware for your device using odin. You can download stock firmwares from SamMobile, SamFrew or Updato. Make sure you run Odin as administrator
Thank you, it worked!! :victory::victory:
i was trying whit a sammobile firmeware, i supose it was the wrong one, thanks for sending me the right one
