Any ex "hybrid rom concept edition" (Xperia Z Ultra uses) interested in development?
Is anyone interested?
What's more important for you guys, security or speed?
If there fans of my work and this amazing device let me know.
I am doing cyber security now, so if you want something really amazing I need a motivation to spend my free time doing that. And I will need to get myself a second device with locked bootloader for starters.

Few reasons, one is that I need to see what can be done with locked one. I managed to port Z3's concept rom to Zu, made it 400mb and it was able to run with Locked Bootloader.
Second reason, is that I can't really afford to brick it right now. I think of switching to black from chrome for a while
I need some crazy idea to motivate myself.
I was able to live with GAAps-free phone for a year, but Nanodroid didn't support new Maps v2 api.
Plus removing Google really improves battery life.
Personally, I am all crazy about Cyber Security and I got pissed when phone lags. Also I believe that most of "innovations" are softeare, that are easy to port.
I posted Google free rom with clear instructions how to install Nanodroid but it's not intersting.

@Doom Slayer, about what can be done with still locked bootloader - you may check following post:

I like your [GUIDE] Z Ultra and Z1 HARD BRICK RECOVERY thread.
Do you think it could be made working with XZp/XZ1/XZ1c phones too?
Hardbrick recovery would be very useful for yoshino phones (managed to brick two already).

@j4nn, that's looks promising. Great work! Too bad I don't have any locked device. But I will keep that information in mind.
About hardbrick recovery, you should try contacting @the_laser, as he was the guy who developed software in the first place.

About the rom development, I am still thinking of a concept itself.
Most likely it would be ultra-debloated

Unfortunately it seems he is not active on xda anymore, for more than a year - mentioning him has no effect, his account is displayed as "disabled". I did not try a pm though.
Do you by any chance know what might have happen with him? Or any good way for contact?

Boot Loader Lock and alternate ROMs

Hello,
I am pondering the possibility to buy the Samsung Galaxy S II and have heard quite a few rumors that this phone will have a locked and encrypted boot loader making it impossible to use alternative ROMs.
I am sure hackers will take very little time in fixing this but am still wondering. Has anyone seen tangible claims of encrypted/lock boot compared to the I9000 (which I own atm).
Thanks!

Samsung's own website mentions encryption, but doesn't give enough detail for us to know if it'll be custom ROM friendly yet. I'm sure it'll take very little time once the phone is released to let you know, just hold tight until then!

I suppose you are referring to the data encryption that Samsung mentioned in its splash page? I really doubt they would post information about a Locked Bootloader on their website as it really wouldn't do them any good publicity wise.

Yeah, I said encryption. Of course we have no idea about the bootloader until it's released or someone techy gets their hands on one! That's why I said we have to wait. Sorry if my post was ambiguous.
SamFirmware just tweeted, Samsung are using same ODIN for Galaxy S II, just with new .PIT file. So it will be flashable.

Yes saw that but it doesn't mean it is flashable just like that until you see it working. Good start anyway.

Locked bootloader...
So I see the chat regarding the locked bootloader on the sg2...I also see people on the forum actually have the device...could they some how check and see if it is locked?
I have been going round in circles looking for a new phone...finally decided on the sam sg2 to find out they are going down the same route as moto!
So, to all the happy owners of a shiney new sg2...whats the dealo!?!?!?
owners of the sgs2 in this forum? you must be mistaken lol...
sam locking the bootloader? who told you that nonsense?
they wouldnt dare to lock the bootloader. its 1 of many reason why sgs 1 succeeded as it did.
if they want sgs2 to be a successful device as well they wont lock the bootloader. it makes sense that the bootloader will be UNlocked.. but then again you can never tell... we might be like if we will find out its locked. followed by and then after we will unlock it. leading to

Battery Life/General Questions about the Arc?

It is a smart phone and battery life differs from a person to another. Do you want me to say its good? On my side, I like the battery life and I think it is totally enough for me.
+PS there are more threads about this and next time try to search before posting a new one.

Sorry, I pressed enter while typing the title and it submitted the post for me. I was also wondering about the usefulness of rooting the phone as I mentioned in my edit.
from what I have seen and experienced from Android, root is a nice feature to get rid of unwanted extra stuff, system files and files came from your carrier and even SE stuff that you don't need. Without them, phone runs faster and battery is better.
Rooting process is easy and no risk in it at least for me but you have to be sure that you know what is going on and how to fix if anything happens instead of freakin out.
+ custom ROM won't happen on rooted devices, you need a unbranded device which can have a unlocked booloader later for custom ROMs/
So I take it that just unbranding the phone following the guides on here isn't enough to get SE to unlock the Bootloader?

well no.
Your phone needs to be bootloader unlockable. It means that phone it self has to come unbranded from Sony Ericsson factory, means no carrier every put their hands on the phone then bootloader on your phone may get unlocked.
hi..you don't necessarily need boot loader unlocked devices for custom roms.. they managed it on x10 for 6 months or so..

Build 10.7.A.0.228? The finale?

Possibly new update spotted on PTCRB with
Build Number: 10.7.A.0.228
Xperia Z
Xperia ZL
As the Build Number suggests it'll still be lollipop, with all the latest stragefright fixes(maybe). And probably will be the final update in what has been a very long journey of updates.
What do you think guys?
Probably like you said it's just stragefright fixes or even just custom version for region or operator.
I would not expect any changes that actually would matter for us. Probably there gonna be "fixes" in changelog but like always it's gonna be just updated sony/google apps.
It has been released.

Well it depends on kernel support for the xzr, and how long it will take is a mystery
I highly doubt we will get Marshmallow. Hell, the Nexus 4 phone, which is practically my ZR where it matters, has not gotten MM officially from big bad Google, i highly doubt Sony would release it. It has been almost a miracle to get the grandfather Z lines to LP anyway.
I wouldn't refuse an update to MM if it ever happens though
sony will not release official MM update for ancient XZ.they have stated that Z2 onward will get offical MM.

Yah, but my phone model is actually C6616. and LOCKED bootloader.
I really feel like this device has been abandoned by XDA devs... which strikes me as incredibly odd, seeing as how its still relevant as a higherMid-end device as far as specs go.
I had a phone from 2011 with half a gig of ram running ****ing Jellybean because it had good support, but I can totally see how that might be an anomoly
Having said that, I haven't explored the Dev forums much at all since I can't even get root without the piece of **** kingroot, let alone unlock my bootloader for some kernels. But it looks like Doom is gone, and he's the only one to my knowledge that catered to C6616.
Furthermore... I am afraid to do *anything* to my phone that even *RISKS* any bricking, since the C6616 evidently has basically zero support around here, so if I did brick, maybe I would just be ****ed. and Im a poor poor student in Canada, so a new phone is not possible. This is my horse and I want to train it. But it looks like I'm not allowed any risk.
I've rooted 5 other phones and gone through hundreds of roms and kernels, so I've learned how things work. But this is ALso my first Sony phone... and I've never had to deal with a locked bootloader.
P.S. the battery sucks I want a better kernel. If you can name anyone who might help I will totally start inboxing them with big hearts and kisses
A kernel doesn't help much. I use zombie and it has really nice features, but batterylife is pretty much the same.
For installing a custom kernel you need to unlock your bootloader, which you obviosly can't. Rooting won't change this

You could try to search for wakelocks etc. and disable unneeded stuff. Though this needs root. You could try to create a pre rooted rom, which you need to flash via recovery. To get a recovery you'll need to downgrade to a version which was easy to root, like 4.3. There are guides here on XDA.

you dont need to unlock your xz
LL roms doesn't match to custom kernels good , because of heating control methods
better to root your phone with "King root" (an android app ) very simple and without any risk of loosing your phone abilities
every thing you asked from custom kernels can find as apps ,you just need to looking for that

Will Essential support custom ROMs, root, etc.

It's carrier unlocked. I haven't heard anything about bootloader unlocked. Which i'm sure it's not, but probably able to unlock easily with "oem unlock" command (hoping anyway). I expect this phone to be easy to unlock, get root, and have a plethora of development. Although it could take some time to get rolling depending on how many devs buy it.
BTW- this thread should be in Discussion or Q & A.
https://www.xda-developers.com/essential-phone-will-have-an-unlockable-bootloader/
Bootloader will be unlockable
The biggest thing is that no one has the phones yet. To really start development we need the phones to extract the firmware and start messing around with the software. Patience, mods will come.
This runs almost completely stock Android, which means we will be abel to do ROMs just like any Nexus/Pixel phone does assuming Essential didnt lock down the "oem unlock" ability. Though they have said in a not 100% official capacity that it will be bootloader unlockable so we should have full ROM and kernel capability .
The bootloader unlock sounds pretty guaranteed, however the roms for Pixel/Nexus devices are built using the official source and kernels released from Google. I wonder how close to stock Essential will run that either they will release sources hopefully close to Google's schedule (which I sort of doubt considering they are launching with 7.1.1 and not 7.1.2) and how much modification their roms may need to run the wireless addon feature and camera on this device. I am hoping we can install and get full functionality out of the Google camera on this device as the stock one does look, limiting, however the wireless addons hopefully will be an easy addon that can be ported to whatever OS builds come down the line..
But like said above, only time and actual hands on can tell.
This thread really doesn't belong in the development section since it's a question it would belong in the Q&A
Anybody getting worried..lol
I'm just hoping for TWRP and Root soon... I'm not in a big hurry for any custom roms.
I'm just hoping that someone could make a custom kernel with gesture support such as dt2w/s2w and wave to activate ambient display.

Rubin's doing an AMA on Thursday so hopefully we get an answer.
I think we need to wait for the Q&A from Andy tomorrow. That is when we can find out a timeline for when we can get source code to start doing things such as rooting and other modding/ ROM making. Just need to have patience and this phone will take off I think.

Someone Please Make A ROM!

I've been looking for a custom ROM for the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren for some time now. I'm really hoping someone can do that as we can now unlock our SIM card lock, Root and put TWRP on our phones and get unlock tokens from OnePlus. I think we can all agree that getting better battery life is a must! I would also love having the customized feel of this phone. Let me know what y'all think, and let me know if your able to run the regular OnePlus 7T ROM's on this phone. I would love to meet someone with a ROM on the McLaren device.
Everyone wants that too. But it's not that easy. First we need to get a base software for the phone (international variant software or similar) and that isn't easy when we have different hardware and restrictions on software by OnePlus. Patience. It'll come at some point.
Tip: never buy a carrier based phone for the sole purpose of rooting or modifying. Things don't always go according to plan
I've said this before...I don't think the base for the 7T Pro McLaren is big enough for Dev's to devote the time needed to develop and maintain a ROM for us. This is a T-Mobile only variant only released in the US. Perhaps some of us who has one may take it on but I would not hold my breath. I do think we'll eventually get a TWRP that sticks once someone gets past the R/O for system.
I'm pretty happy unlocked with root for now.

That's what I'm thinking! My only issue with OxygenOS is the aggressive hibernation of apps in the background... At least with past OnePlus devices, trying to change every setting I could and using a custom kernel didn't always fix the problem.. however, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to tweaking kernel settings, so that could have something to do with it. Any luck with adjusting this? I already requested my unlock token and I'm just waiting to hear back from OnePlus
