What's up with the terrible battery drain when idling? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Questions & Answers

I've had the RN7 for like 2 months or so. My previous phone was a Samsung Galaxy S5 which I liked quite a lot & ran Lineage 16 on it for the last 3 years. On that ROM I got used to having literally 1% of battery drained on idle at max & could leave the phone on the last percent of battery left for 12h & it wouldn't turn off. Now, being on the RN7, things are different... I'm on a 3rd ROM (Syberia -> LOS 16 by lmc -> LOS 16 by AmulyaX) by now & have to say that even compared to MIUI, the idle battery drain is just... abysmal. How is it possible for a phone with a 4000mAh battery to drain 7-8% of charge during less than 10h idle where a phone with a 2800mAh battery could literally last half a day. Because of that, my overall SOT also takes a hit as on MIUI I was easily able to achieve 8-10h SOT, where on LOS or any other ROM I struggle to get 7h. Am I doing something wrong? Are all the ROMs for phone just straight up trash? Is there some bad omen acting on me? I just want an answer to why the battery drain during idling is so awful... That's just straight up unacceptable.
P. S. No, I do NOT care about undervolting/underclocking the CPU or GPU as I never had to do that on my previous phone.

I was also thinking about that. I see many people claiming like 11+ hours sot on this phone (custom roms and stock) but I can barely reach 7h. My last phone had a 3500mAh battery and would last a full day of use, but this one with 4000mAh makes me look for a charger during the day. Really weird.

Same here. Actually i had the same disappointment with my redmi note 4 i had previously. My old phone with 2300 mah battery lasted much longer. With both redmis my battery is dead at the end of second day with 3-4 hours of SoT

So... Few days have passed since the last post & in the mean time I charged my phone like 3 or 4 times. In the last few days I noticed something curious regarding the battery idle issue. I lost root like 2 or 3 days ago & from that time I noticed that the battery idle drain has DRAMATICALLY improved. It seems that somehow having Magisk causes battery drain (could it be related to the System On Root thing on our phone)? It could just be a coincidence that this happened at the same time, but from when it happened, my phone hardly drained a single % of battery when idling & I was actually surprised. Personally, I don't really need root anymore as I don't use apps that need it other than starting them for the first time to i.e. restore my apps backups.
Hopefully someone will do something with that info & maybe will solve the idle battery drain issue

I have the latest Atom ROM and the battery drain is ok! After two days i install magisk just for root and I clearly see the battery drain is a little bit more high !

Did you unroot your phone while using custom rom or turned to stock rom bcoz I'm planning to install pixel experience custom rom and does it have any battery issues?

In my experience battery performance in PE 10 is the same as in MIUI 11. I only need to go for the charger for like, once a day. Even with Magisk installed.

I've played around with the CPU settings in Kernel Adiutor like 2 days ago & then used my phone the way I always do. From the "results" I've gathered, it seems like my combinations of settings has made the phone enter deep sleep where as before that state was unused (as reported by KA). I probably didn't discover anything ground breaking or revolutionary, but with the settings I've changed, I still have the same performance as well as good battery life & great idle (literally 0-1% drain over night even with apps running in the background).
I will list just the settings I've changed in Kernel Adiutor to not spend a lot of time on writing each separate option for no reason.
CPU:
Big governor: interactive (you may fiddle around with it if you want to)
LITTLE governor: powersave
boost input interval: 0ms
CPU hotplug:
Minimum CPUs big: 1
I/O Scheduler:
Internal Storage scheduler: noop
Virtual memory:
Z-RAM Disksize: 2040MB
Now, as I said, I'm sure these values aren't revolutionary & my issues may have went away on their own, but you can always try for yourself & report back if anything changed (don't forget to save your current settings)

P. S. I'm on LOS 16 by AmulyaX

I'm on Havoc 2.9 and still play, but...

if you want to save you bettry in your phone, use the option of the battery saver if do you have,
if you dont have, try battery saver apps in your phone

2.3.4 battery life solution

Requires root
Download setcpu, make a new profile for screen off, set max cpu at 216 mhz, min cpu and 216 mhz.
Check "set on boot" and open up setcpu everytime you boot up your phone. (so it obtains superuser root access and loads the profile)
This will save battery life substantially. Went from 60% battery use phone idle to 13%.
If you're noticing issues recieving calls/texts then simply change the profile to 216 min 315max.
Cheers
Good idea, I forgot about profiles... Used to use them on my nexus.

How does a new sim card improve your battery life?
Used the screen off profile thingy since i got my atrix...n sadly on gb still getting baaaad battery drain...20+ hours in froyo with heavy usage n just getting 11+ hours in gb with the same kinda usage
Just checking if anyone tried this out....Mine is running 54% at phone idle. Charged to 100% yesterday, let sit overnight and looked and it this morning and it was at 70%. I rebooted the phone and it showed 90%. Not sure if this might fix it or if I need to install a zip fix.
Freeze apps
You could also freeze apps. Look at this thread for apps to freeze. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182663
Terrible idea if you want to use your phone. Phone takes too long to wake up. I personally set mine at 4xx or 6xx mhz. A balance between waiting and getting to a usable state faster.

216 is way too low this can cause your phone to have some serious lag on wake up. My settings that give me foot battery life I run my phone on 816mhz as the highest

phone turns on instantly on 216 for me, but i do have the nolock app installed.
the problem is that when receiving calls it takes a while for the answer button to show up

with any type of password entry it takes FOREVER. especially the pattern lock. i upped it to 4xx because it was too frustrating.
whats the default kernel behaviour I wonder (ie when does it sleep at 216 normally)
New discovery.......
The original motorola battery is the cause of the drain!
I think not all the Atrix holder has problem with battery drain.
Most of the user think that it is caused by ROM setting.
Since I have another brand battery for Atrix, I find that if I plug-in
the original motorola battery, my Atrix become hot even it is on standby.
(Surely, I swipe the battery status before I use this original battery.)
When I use another brand battery, I get no problem and with more than
24 hours standby time, whether I swipe or not swipe the battery status.
That's my conclusion is the battery deficit. Don't buy Moto original battery!

This is a cheap price batter which work very good on my Atrix.
All of you should be using juice defender. Getting about 60% more battery life on average for each charge. There's a beta version on the market that's completely free.
I keep my CPU at 100-1100 with the on demand gov. No need to clock down to save battery.

We need to do something guys. For those with poor battery life, does you unit run hot? I never had a phone run as hot as the atrix before. I always said the atrix was a HOT phone since its release, but this isn't what I meant

battery life

Just thought I'd give a quick review of Cyanogen Mod 7 battery life and performance.
Standby battery drain of about 1.5%/hr with 3G, backround data on, auto-sync on, wifi on, GPS on.
I've never obtained such great battery life on any stock rom or stock-modified rom (I've tried a few different ones over the last year or so)
The performance is also much better than any of the stock-based roms (no lags).
No need to create new topic for that information.
fan/zombie boys everywhere
aple has ones so why not android ;]
Which nightly are you using? Which kernel?
After a night my Galaxy S is always dead. I solved the problem disabling 3g connection and sync. Stock rom 2.3.3 and semaphore kernel.

Sorry to say but useless thread. Just keep the damn charger always near you and battery life wont matter.
Btw did cyanogen pay you for posting this?or........
haha I had the same thought
I used to always hear about CM7 having god-awful battery life. I don't know if people were lying or if they fixed some major bugs, but I certainly have no complaints about my phone's battery life (running CM7, of course). I get through way more than a day.

That's my current battery stats. Haven't used the phone too much the last little while, but getting over 24 hours is not uncommon—I actually very rarely see my phone last for under 24 hours, and that's usually because of 5+ hours of screen on time. For that battery, I'd say about 75 texts, 30 minutes of phone calls, and about 30-60 minutes of web browsing. Fairly light use, but nevertheless, the battery life on CM7 is nothing to complain about.
EDIT: Looks like something was causing a wakelock the last ~6-8 hours while I was asleep, causing my phone not to deep sleep. If that hadn't of happened, it would still have quite a bit more battery (when I went to bed it was 44%, so it shouldn't have dropped to 27%—it should have dropped to ~40%). This just proves my point even more: battery life on CM7 is not bad at all.
seriusly?
do you see any battery change in that period compared to one earlier ))
when it was awake on your funny screenshot it was discharging with the same when the phone was not awake acordding to that stats so no impact registered
Thanks to share that information...

This sounds fantastic, Cm7.1 is my next choice, on XXJVT battery life is only 12h
thats using juicedefender to activate the data connection when screen turns on, emails still push to phone straight away with gmail so it is fine for me.
WIFI seems to drain the battery a bit quicker but not enough for me to bother flashing different kernels
I saw someone who did 2 WEEKS without charging. Normal using with black wallpaper on 2g network.
seems to be even better on ics... the best i had was ~2% per 8 hours...
3G + WiFi + email max 1 day

Regarding LineageOS sourced ROMs on LS997 (devs please look LOS BUG!)

Introduction: Important shizz is underlined and in bold
So for the past 2 months I've been flashing away with my new V20. Of course one of the first things that I decided to do was to get a CM/LOS ROM on this bad boy. And thus is where the problems begin. Before I went to any of the AOKP or RRemix ROMs I went straight to LineageOS first as a base point. I installed it successfully did all the necessary procedures (format x3, wipe errthing x3) and then installed the ROM, gapps, and Magisk.
Average battery life with watching a total of 30 minutes of Youtube videos sequentially on my 15 minute breaks, texting throughout the day, and one hour of music playing from spotify (streaming) in the morning. My work is a pretty set schedule and by no means am I on my phone all day or anything like that. So with a total SOT (screen on time) of about 45 minutes I got 5 hours of battery life.
Yes I did a clean clean clean stock install of a Lineage based ROM
No I have no other apps running and draining my batteries
I really do not think its hardware related because it can be fixed!
How I tried to fix it
Now I try all the other ROMs. AOKP, same deal even with tweaking through Kernel Auditor on the Play Store, so I figured okay maybe just a fluke with these two ROMs. So I go and use previous builds of LOS and AOKP, nothing still the same issue. I go and use RRemix, same issue.
So heres the issue, 100% cpu usage while screen is on (cpus are maxed out on the little and big clusters) unless screen is off, then it goes into deep sleep, and the phone gets ridiculously hot which in turn drains the battery even faster.
Now at this point I'm so frustrated and had already settled on going back to stock until I downloaded Advanced Kernel Tweaker from an XDA post from the OnePlus forums. Its the same chipset (snapdragon 820) and tried applying different profiles. I got an extra hour using these tweaks but I still knew something was going wrong and I cannot figure it out for the life of me until I dug deeper reading posts about this stuff from several months ago and people having issues of overheating and an average of 5 hours of battery life
In one of the threads I read someone mentioned that it was just Kernel Auditor and its coding had been done in a way that was unoptimized. Because when your system detects you opening an app it boosts your little/big cluster in order to make up for the cpu usage so theres no lag. Well I thought okay I'll just use something else, so I spent money on EX Kernel Manager and by God, still the same issues, UNTIL, I hit the button at the top that is called performance mode.
BY GOD IT WORKED, HOLY CRAP MY CPU USAGE ISN'T JUST AT FULL USAGE
My temporary fix
So now, I am constantly in performance mode with using EX Kernel Manager but I have control over my cores!! And they are no longer at 100% usage.
Here are pictures of the new stats with EX Kernel manager and uptimes of my little and big clusters.
Big

Little
New battery life on ONE CYCLE
ps. the stent of this cycle was 5/22/2017 15:00hrs to 5/23/2017 19:00hrs
Summary of the problem
So as you can see, there are all of the speeds being used instead of just the one of 1593MHz when performance mode is off. If people would like pictures of 5 hours of constant 1593MHz speeds I can show you them, but I really don't feel like wasting and overheating my devices battery for the purpose of just pictures. Heres a taste of it without perfomance mode on, by the way, the little speedometer gauge in the top right of this image is the performance mode.
Conclusion
So in conclusion, performance mode on using EX Kernel Manager, Advanced Kernel Tweaker scripts installed and using Project Zhana Battery profile, no more overheating and only getting 5 hours of battery life. YES this is a temporary fix but I hope arming XDA with this knowledge can push people and developers to find a fix. Thank you for your time reading this.
Meh. i dont have this issue. Seems like a problem with yours. Ive never had overheating issues :/ i just checked my Freq. usage. No issues. mine has24 hrs uptime with the following usage: 1593-59 min, 1478-20 min, 1401-15 min etc etc. you appear to be having issues on yours alone.

Thank you for your reply, are you on LS997? Also what ROM and if its just my device, how come even with CLEAN installs I have this persisting issue?
Yes I am on LS997. I run EmotionOS(Though i think i am on an unreleased build). You COULD have a faulty device.
EDIT: i see you state you are constantly at 100% usage. You need to check and see what app(s) are hogging the cpu. Something is obviously running if your phone runs hot and are at 100% usage.

I thought this too, so I did a clean clean clean install of a rom and ONLY installed monitoring software and I still had the same issue, but heres the thing that trips me out man, how come software can fix it if its a faulty hardware issue? Any ideas? It has to be kernel related.

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It was with MIUI . I have battery on 65% and after 5-6 days of stand-by I returned to it and it has been turned off with 0% in battery. It is terrible. MIUI is not optimised at all in the subject of battery . It is not very big supprise . I have had the same with galaxy tab 4 on stock. Once it consumed all battery during 2 days of stand-by.
If you want to buy this tablet and use it without bootloader unlocking with MIUI , please select other device.
I installed aicp and made my own optimalisations. I can see the result in WLD and on system battery graph. It will live month or month and half on stand-by now. It has a sense.
I voted 1 star , of cource this is MIUI raiting .

I dont have such problem and stock MIUI works perfect for me. No idle drains, bugs, or other problems. Battery life is very good, and all custom roms have some kind of bug, so no, i wouldnt recommend custom rom over stock rom. Also, some sellers preinstall custom miui roms before selling so you have play store preinstalled. So first make sure you have official miui rom and not custom vendor modified miui.
I am sure . Orginally packed by Xiaomi.
Edit.
Today I have the second pad 4 but this time not miui 9 but miui 10 stable and battery works noticable batter
Nothing to complain about on stock miui 10. It's not that I actually tested it but I have a feeling that it would last at least week on standby.
I was travelling and didnt touch tablet for 4 days. It only lost 8% of battery during that time, which i think is awesome.

How it is with auto-off-timer? I'm use it on my Redmi Note 4 and it's great. So i can use my phone over 4 to 5 days with nearly 30% screen-on time.
Between 0:00 and 7:30 my Phone goes automaticly in deep sleep. After 2 years i'm absolutely happy with this solution.

What is your ROM?
Just got a Mi Pad 4 and I'm having the same problem, fast battery drain even on standby. I'm on stock MIUI 10.3.2. Any tips/workaround to address this issue? TIA!
Has been using stock rom for a few years without updating playstore and any installed apps and the battery life was great like still more than 50% after a week idling with a full charge. Playing around with the settings recently and turn on auto update on playstore and uninstalled some apps. Battery drain was almost always at 0%(turn off automatically) daily with a full charge and idling for the past few days. I totally regretted what ive done zzz
I'm testing idle drain after swapping the battery out. I bought the battery when I bought the device, but just got around to changing it. The device was out for 2 years before I purchased, so the batteries are as old as the device. It would last no more than three hours before. I also added a copper heatsink and thermal paste. I was about to get rid of it, until those changes, I'm on A11, and it's running really smooth.

[Q] Cell Standby Bugs? It Is Draining My Battery

I am on the latest update, which is 10.3.5.0 (PFGMIXM).
Right now the 'Cell Standby' is killing my battery more than the screen.
With my Redmi Note 5, I can get about 8 to 9 hours of SOT.
But with Note 7, I think the maximum SOT would be about 7 hours only, and I have to recharge it.
The question is, is it a bug in the latest firmware update, or is it related to the hardware?
What can I do, to 'fix' this?
It kinda mess up because I can easily get 2 days of battery life with Note 5, but not with Note 7 which is using a better CPU.
Really?
NONE of you guys have this 'problem'?
It seems to be some bug in the signal connection, maybe in a next att can solve, try a hard reset, switch to beta rom.
Have you disabled dual 4G? Changed to use 2G network? Go through Sim settings for optimal battery performance.

Hey, thanks man. I will try that setting later and I'll let you know if it does bring improvement to the battery life.
Did this ever fix your issue?
ye man got the same problem. I put my phone into airplane mode, turned on battery saver, went to sleep but still charge consumed 4-5% after 7-8 hours of sleeping. This is ridiculous! Got the problem in 4x now in rn7. What the hell is going on with redmi
I would backup your data and factory reset the device.
I've heard of people having this issue with the new 10.3.6 but not 10.3.5.
I'm on 10.3.5 now and refuse to update since the battery life experience I have now is perfect.
If you haven't already, try factory resetting the phone and report back
I have the same issues. I changed from Xiaomi Mi A1 to Redmi Note 7 and the difference in battery life is ridiculous even though in comparison test Redmi Note 7 should last quite longer than my previous phone. Currently cell standby consumer 67% of battery whereas my screen only consumes 21%. My version is MIUI Global 10.3.4 and I have the same issues, cell standby consumes a lot of battery. Tried a solution that I found regarding changing mobile services to LTE/WCDMA (it defaults to LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS which includes chinese networks) it helped a bit but still the problem is that after restart it doesnt keep these settings

7hrs is not a bad SOT for RN7, the reason RN5 lasts longer is because SD636 consumes less battery than the SD660, I also changed from a RN5 to a RN7 if you're wondering.

Hello guys!
I bought the phone yesterday and also have the same issue with the cell stand by: it started to waste 60% of my battery. Now it at 42%.
But at the end i realise that all that stats are in relation with the beautiful graphic that shows you the discharge of your battery since the last charge...and that is the key. For example now my phone is at 59% of batterfy since last charge this mornig, 11h 30min hours ago (i leaved home with aprox. 92% of battery)
Im thinking that the percentaje of battery drained by the stand by is okey and we dont have to worry about....because its only saying that in the 11 hours since last charge, the 42% of that time the phone was losing battery because it was on stand by.
But well maybe im wrong....
PD: i also have 10.3.4.0 global version of MIUI and i also put my network type of connection to LTE/WCDMA
Try going to about device > tap internal storage until the network menu pops up > SIM 1/2 > Change bands to LTE/WDCMA
A similar bug appeared on the Mi 8 Lite and this fixes it there
both phones have 4000mah battery and similar FHD+ screen.
the difference is: RN5 has SD636 BUT RN7 has SD660. both fabricated in 14nm but SD660 is way more powerful. SD660 has better GPU and higher clock speed. that's why RN7 uses more power compared to RN5. Unless you underclocked the CPU and GPU, there's no logical way for RN7 to have a better battery life compared to RN5; if they're on the same OS and have same usage.
You are lucky to have so little cell standby drain! I'm over 80%...
It is related, to the SIM, maybe the baseband/radio.
Changing to custom ROM doesn't seem to improve either, I'm testing havoc ATM.
I've opened a tread on the miui forum, but had no replay's. I'm not yet allowed to post link...
Edit: 1.5%/hour idle drain with Havoc OS. Going custom doesn't improve sadly.
On nights I always turn on airplane mode...and the drain is the same, so, is not a signal issue related thing

Is it possible that airplane mode doesn't switch of the radio? Cell standby is "(cell)radio idle" IMHO.
As an update:
I had a private conversation with one other owner on an other forum.
He measured different SIM-s idle drain and found practically the same result as I'm.
-Telekom voice only: 0.3% /hour
-Telenor data only: 1.2% /hour
-Telenor voice only: 0.4% /hour
-Digi voice/data: 0.3% /hour
Note the two Telenor SIM-s, they are under the exact same conditions/LTE band/coverage/signal strength/ect...
So if you use a double SIM setup, with a 2nd vampire SIM like the above Telenor one, You could easily criple your 5-6 day stadby time to 2 days.
