With the battery being smaller on the pixel 4 and smaller than the pixel 3, do you think the pixel 4 will make it thru a day without being recharged ?
How are the users with the pixel 3 getting on with the smaller battery ?
I've ordered the pixel 4, but I am really concerned that the battery won't be large enough. The mobile nature of my job means the phone is constantly searching for mobile signal as I drive 400 mile per night.
My pixel 2xl at 2 years old still does a 15hr shift without needing a charger plugged in to top up..
I think it's going to be try the phone for the first week and if the phone doesn't manage to do what the pixel 2xl does, it will be sadly returned and I will wait for pixel 5..
Also gutted the oh so orange pixel 4 isn't available in 128gb version.. Google what are you thinking ???

Didn't want a 4xl barondebxl. It's bigger than the 2xl and with a military grade drop protection case around it, it would be taking the phone close to a 7inch phone... Just too big.

Can't you simply keep the phone plugged in while driving? A small battery only matters if you are NOT close to a power source.
I know with the Pixel 3a series phones, the battery is bypassed once it is fully charged, but still plugged into a charger (called battery idle mode). So there is zero bad repercussions from leaving the phone plugged in for extended periods of time. I'm not sure if the earlier Pixel series batteries do this, but I would be surprised if the Pixel 4 didn't have this feature.
It all depends on your situation.
My Pixel 2 lasts 24-36 hours and 4 hours SoT when I'm in my home city (Barcelona) (And If I disable AOD, I can get like 48 hours at home, I charge it after 2 nights).
But it lasts 12-18 hours with 1-3 SoT when I'm in the city I'm staying during the week for work (Zürich). And I can't figure out why the battery drains so fast in the hotel I'm staying (like 30% overnight). Tonight I'll try Airplane mode + WiFi.
Battery health is around...80-86%/100% I can't remember well. It's almost 2 years old.
I'm reviewing the smaller Pixel 4. You'll see what the battery life is like in my review. Can't talk about it yet though.

It's something I avoid doing. The constant micro vibrations and bumps from potholes in the road and engine vibes from 18 wheeler place the usb port under a lot of stress when the charging cable is plugged in.
In literally a couple of months you find it's elongated the usb port on the phone and then the charging cable is constantly falling out and you start getting problems trying to get decent connection to charge the phone..

40-70% (right now -104 dbm 36 asu)
But I think the culprit is the WiFi (which is...5Ghz and "Good" signal strength in this hotel).
I charged phone to 90% enabled airplane mode + WiFi and was draining "screen off: 9%/hour" (with AOD off and location off).
Now I charged again to 90% and I'm trying WiFi OFF but Mobile On (LTE on) and it's draining: "screen off: 2%/hour". (According to accubattery). (Also AOD and location is off, so WiFi is completely off).
So I think there is some **** going on with the WiFi bands around. Could be a mix of both things, so not very good GSM signal as well. (If I'm at home I think it drains less than 1% per hour)
Edit: I'm back at home and here standby battery is awesome....Like 0.2.% per hour and with AoD...(2 Hours SoT, 9 hours standby and 62% left)

Well the Pixel 4 does have wireless charging......
No use unfortunately. Not found any that accept 24volt input and they all have a smooth surface, so the first roundabout I go round and the phones launched itself across the cab, either under my feet or into the passenger side..[emoji21]

Ok let's face it. battery sucks and probably won't be an upgrade over Pixel 2 (despite having more modern hardware). However, this paragraph is a good relief:
In Tom's Guide's battery test, which forces the device to endlessly refresh web pages while set to 150 nits of screen brightness, the Pixel 4 called it quits after an average of 8 hours and 3 minutes, across two tests. One additional session, run with the display adjusted to a less-energy-consuming 60 Hz, produced a slightly better time of 8 hours and 36 minutes.

I learnt two things:
1) disabling 90Hz, doesn't change a lot... it has 6% impact? Anyway let's keep checking.
2) this could be fixed by Google polishing more Android standby battery consumption.
Actually my current Pixel 2 has a very good foreground battery life, what sometimes sucks is the background usage. It's been always a mess. Maybe Google will finally focus on real energy optimized android, because they need to maintain this phone for 3 years and battery can't go worse.
While it's being discussed..whats up with the 45w AC adapter? Obviously im assuming that it charges faster than the 18w adapter, but how much faster? And why wouldn't that just be included with the phone that way?
Good battery life will be further helped with custom kernel and some tweaking, In my experience pixel's run too hot and spike the cpu too often. Also the wifi scanning when out and about could be tweaked or disabled, I've seen this hit the battery hard on other devices. Anxious to get mine tomorrow and I'll run some tests.

Is it the 4, or 4xl?
Download and setup the app "Nap Time"
it's super useful by putting your phone to sleep and in doze faster, this extends my battery by a good amount.
I also made a tasker profile to turn on battery saver mode when the screen is off and off when the screen turns on. This helps too, but AOD doesn't work with it...

Mines been quite poor, but it's been downloading and installing apps over LTE for hours. Not exactly a fair benchmark.

Same here. But when i finished installing it, I fully charged it around 9pm last night and it just went to 10% today at 1pm
I'm at 4h 40m screen on time, with 36% left in the tank. I put the mid batt saver on at 65%. At this point I'm pretty impressed.
The battery is downright impressive!

Yea I don't know what happen but my last 2 charges after that has been around 5 hrs max. I didn't do anything different. But I'm still satisfied with 5 hrs SOT
One thing that isn't mentioned enough is battery maintenance and care. A carefully maintained battery will last longer, and store more energy, therefore providing more time between charges. I have a lot of knowledge about lithium based batteries in the hobby grade Radio control models. I have been maintaining lithium polymer and lithium ion cells for about a decade. So I would like to compile some tips for everyone.
1) Heat. Heat causes the most damage to lithium based batteries. Leaving your phone in direct sunlight, as most of us know can cause your device to catch fire, or even explode. Water is useless in extinguishing a lithium fire. Lithium cells will burn under water. This isn't new info to most of us, but I mention heat mainly for these reasons;
A) rapid charging causes increased heat in the cell. This increased heat degrades the cell, causing reduced cycle life. This is significantly more concerning on modern phones without removable or replaceable cells. Therefore you should avoid rapid charging unless it's absolutely necessary. Especially overnight. If your sleeping then there's no reason to rapid charge.
2) Voltages. Voltages are also very important, but since these are managed automatically you don't need to be overly concerned about them.
A) 3.0v this is the minimum voltage at which your charger will still recharge the cell. Most phones will shut off at 3.3v or 3.2v. This is your 0% charge level. The reason this is significant is that once your phone shuts down from a dead battery it is important to recharge it within a reasonable timeframe. It may take a week or 2 for the cell to drop those last few tenths of a volt, but once it does it's over.
That said, it is good to completely drain your battery occasionally because this helps the OS calibrate a more accurate battery charge percentage.
B) 4.2v is fully charged. This is your 100% charge level.
C) 3.7v is the best voltage for cell storage. This is approximately 50% charge. That is why your phone is usually about half charged when it is unboxed. (But who stores their phone lol)
So the important takeaway from all of this is, avoid rapid charging when you can, and once your phone dies, recharge it soon after. -Chris

I went through 16 hrs of my average use and had 39% battery left before calling it a day. That's at least 30% more than what I was squeezing out my Note 4 on 6.0.1. Idling overnight for 7 hrs the battery went down only 4%.
I'm really impressed so far!

If the question is for me....yeah, Material Dark Theme. Nova Launcher, no stuff disabled (Wi-FI/Loc/BT etc.). No app power saving. Hi resolution. I run "Optimize" once in the Device Maintenance menu.
I'll post a stats screenshot at the end of the day
I don't really trust any battery benchmarks right now..... the phones are all brand new...... lets all wait about 12 months and re-check them; While compared to the Note 3 my Note 7 replaced I am generally happy with the upgrade to the Note 7, the sealed battery is really pissing me off. I was using the Zero Lemon 10,000 mah batteries on the Note 3. I can almost gamble that the battery in the Note 7 will be useless in 12-24 months depending on usage and then we are stuck with $800 bricks unless someone figures out how to safely open the phone so we can replace the battery on our own.
Yesterday I had 7.2 hours of SOT. First few days were a little less, due to initial geek out, setup, testing. Seems on par with the my Note 5 and S7e.
What this shows me, is that I need to spend much less time in front of a phone's display....

For how I use the phone, I can easily get over 7 hours SOT....with 10% or more left. Yeah... I disable all the Sammy/Tmo bloatware I can....as well as Lookout, Android Pay, Facebook stuff...and a few others. I always use Nova 3.3 (the last before they switched to the horrible white themes of LP & MM) and I've been using a minimal black theme from the Sammy store, that has the color rings around some icons. Love it. I don't use auto brightness...and normally have it about 30-40%. I also don't ever use NFC, so it's disabled. I rarely use bluetooth....and i don't do any gaming really. I imagine if you're doing those things...battery life will suffer a bit.
Though I definitely think it helps to have an all black theme going. Settings, dialer, app drawer....solid black. And don't have the screen too bright of course.
I don't know how good or bad it will be but in my opinnion it's going to be average and its a note so i'll be using the phone a lot. I just bought the wireless charging case from the T-Mobile store i work at My coral blue comes tomorrow !!!

That and a lot of pics and video...and this may sound crazy, but I actually use it as a phone too During hikes and bike rides, I use it as a fitness/gps tracker....and I stream a bunch to Chromecast/TV. Battery drain is amazingly low while streaming to Chromecast.
I did buy one..... waiting but I hope the battery life is going to be excellent.
The size of the battery is not huge and even though they say excellent battery life Google does not give you stats.

Can you wake up 6am set the phone in charger at midnight and still have battery?
Me I typically play a game, use my language learning programs a few hours a day.
Check maybe 20 emails, and 20 text messages.
Location services and bluetooth are always on. (need them for Play services and Android Wear)
And I believe and I hope the device proves me wrong but if I know it will be a long time between charges I will need to modify usage.
Is the type of usage I go through unreasonable ?
Yet all they say is you can get 7 hours of usage (what type of usage?) in 15 minutes.
So you are in the airports all day the battery is at 20% and you need to have the charger with you and find an outlet.
1) do not always have the charger handy
2) can not always find A/C

They stated similar stats when they released the 6P (the shop page was deleted so I can't paste them) and I got one....
Best screen-on-time I can get is 5 hours (with custom rom, custom kernel and a lot of system tweaks).
Don't rely on those stats, they were (in the best case) made under ideal conditions (probably in a lab) or (and that's rather the case) just calculated and without promise....
I am somewhat underwhelmed with the 6P battery life, but I'm stock as I can't root per company policies.
Hoping the Pixel XL will be better. Or at least same... If it is worse, then it will be going back in the 14 day return window.

Potentially we're looking at better stats.
Same size battery in a smaller body with a smaller screen and Supposed CPU optimisations, could explain the underclock.
My 6p makes it through the day without a charge, but I'm never far from an outlet, car charger or power bank just in case. Now that I've USB C proofed my home and office the rapid charging serves its purpose.
We've all seen the garbage spouted about days of battery life before and usage varies so much per user it's hard to compare. As they say the proof is in the pudding so we'll soon see, the price definitely isn't going up so why not wait and see?

Why not rely on Google's internal battery life tests?
They did the same for the 6P, so they can be compared.
All that matters in the end is how it really works for you, also stats are always overly optimistic. You buy a car an the dealer says the car is rated 5 litres per 100 km and every time the best your car does is 7 litres per 100km
What I had to do in the past is when I know I will be travelling without easy access to a charger is ration battery usage.
The stats though are encouraging hopefully and only time will tell is my next device I will not have to ration too much.
I really miss removable batteries remember the carefree way I used devices in the past with huge Zerolemon batteries. They will like sell a case for the Pixel XL but a case that adds battery capacity is not as elegant as just using a bigger battery.
The reviews on the battery life seem pretty terrible so far and is really worrying me as it was my only concern. I have been rocking a Hauwei Mate 8 recently, which I consistently get around 7 hr SOT. Reviews for Pixel XL are coming out at 3.5-4 hr, which is not good for how big it is. It has only a slightly smaller battery than the S7 Edge, but the Edge performs much better, I was getting 5-5 .5 hr SOT with my Edge before switching to Mate 8. Google Assistant always being present and doing stuff may be a pretty severe drain. Just as someone else mentioned, nice that we have a 15 day return window.

3-4 hours SOT sucks. Im getting 6 hours on 6p and 5 on Nexus 6
SOT is dependent on multiple factors, like what apps are running in background and what you do on the phone. Web browsing habits of sites visited, some sites have a lot going on.

Many of the reviews that came out yesterday gave the Pixel highly positive ratings on battery. MKBHD said he got 6hrs SOT on full brightness, Dieter at the Verge said it might be the best battery life of any phone he'd ever used. Wired and a couple others also noted it as a high point. But then Mossberg said the smaller Pixel got so-so battery, and I think one of the Android Authority guys also called it average.
So... it sounds like basically any other Android phone. Varies highly for different people.

Pretty sure the AA review, he was getting 3.5-4 hours for battery life and called it good/above average, which is not. I remember his specifically because that is where I got the idea that google assistant could be having a large impact if used heavily, which he said he was using heavily. I don't remember MKBHD saying 6 hours but I would have to go rewatch. I know I saw at least 2 reviews that said 3.5-4 ish and they both called it good. Which makes me worry that all the other reviews that called it good without giving specific numbers were under this same impression. I watched a crap ton of reviews, many didn't give specific stats. They must be comparing it to htc10, lg g5 and iphone to consider that good, leaving samsung as the only outstanding if they are considering that anywhere near good.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the first charge out of the box but that is still not a good indication. No bueno. Guess I have two weeks to try it out.
I'm at 90% right now with 56 min screen on time. Just reading the news/web browsing. On wifi.

How heavily have you been using the new assistant? have you done anything to customize your settings like turn off always listening or anything like that, adaptive screen brightness, etc?

I got mine yesterday at 5pm, Used it straight, setting it up with everything turned on and screen @ %100 (setup, music, movies, games) and it died after 5.5 hours. It was also on 86% charge when i got it.

Right now, no tweaks everything turned on (assistant, always listening, Bluetooth, wifi).
Mostly web browsing. 15 minutes or so of Clash Royale. On wifi most of the day. Auto brightness.
Looks like about 6h SOT if I took it to empty.

I am pretty consistently getting to 20% battery with 4 hours of screen time regardless of my usage. I'm mostly on wifi, probably 90% of the time.
I'm surprisingly getting an hour less than my pixel 2. It's around 5 hours.

The Pixel 3 has a 13% larger screen and 13% more pixels than the Pixel 2 with only an 8% bigger battery. Getting less battery life isn't a surprise at all.
What is a surprise is your claim that the Pixel 2 got 6 hours. With a 5" 1080p screen and only a 2700mAh battery I have a hard time believing anything more than about 4.5 hours.

Its kinda bad. My brother cant get over 5 hours sot and the standby drain is really high. If he keeps it idle it drains alot.
I've had my Pixel 3 XL for roughly 7 days now and SOT have been consistent around 4:30 - 5:15 hrs going from 95 - 20 percent discharges before I recharge.
Not bad, but I have to admit that I was expecting something better like easily reaching 6+ hrs for normal usage.
My last hope is that boy "Adaptive Battery" if it would help after couple of weeks at learning curve.

Try turning off the Always ON display. It drains the battery a lot. Initially i was getting 5 hrs max on wifi. Now its a little stable and i am able to clock around 8hrs SOT with average use. On LTE, it will drop drastically to 5hrs maybe.

I've have pretty bad result being pretty much 95% on wifi with low app usage
I'm seeing mixed results with SoT on two separate Pixel 3s. On my SO's Pixel 3 its getting 8 hours while mine is only getting closer to 3-4 hrs and she is a heavier user than me usually. Seems to me that the information the adaptive battery has on usage matter a great deal on your battery life. I opted to start fresh on my Pixel 3 while she opted to transfer from an older Pixel.
Getting consistent 6-7 hours of SoT without ambient display, half WiFi, half data and some Bluetooth usage. Using amoled black or dark mode with many apps and an amoled themed wallpaper. This is at 90% brightness. Quite impressed.
getting 5/6h SOT
Screen brightness at about 75%, and nightmode at the end of the day.
Mix of WIFI/ LTE during day and Bluetooth in the car obviously.
So far impressed since the size of the battery is small compared to other devices.
My HTC u11+ was getting about 6h SOT with a much much larger battery capacity.
I'll be the first to admit I dont have much running in the background right now, but I'm still pleased. In case the links don't work -- 6 h 30 m screen on time. Phone charged 20 hours ago. (I'm not usually that heavy of a user, just wanted to see how it would fare in the real world. ) Mix of WiFi, LTE, bluetooth on about half the time.

Use battery saving mode on time. I'm getting similar results. I accidently plugged in the charger at the last bit (thought I took the screenshot but I didn't) but you can see it only charged about 2%.

I was having bad battery life too and wanted to sell it for the OnePlus 6T. What I did was left on battery saver all day and it worked out pretty good. Try that for now and see how it works for you.

If you opted to start from scratch when you set up your Pixel 3 and did not transfer the data from a device that already has the adaptive battery feature getting about 1 hour of SoT seems to be normal based on my experience. I haven't been able to confirm this, but based on my experience the adaptive battery feature seems to use machine learning. It learns what apps you use over time and how often you use them. The more data it has, the better the battery life you will get. It took about 3 weeks for my battery to settle down. Currently, my battery is estimated to last about 17 hours from a full charge. My suspicion is that the Pixel 3 start out running everything you install and slowly learns how aggressive it should limit the battery usage of an app. Aside from leaving it on battery saver, I would also recommend not charging it overnight a couple of days and letting it sit there. That seems to have helped me with the battery life and my device knowing to limit apps I don't use frequently.

Forgot to attach the picture.
I should've saved a screenshot last night, but I had just over 6 hours SOT with 16 hours off of the charger. That's with moderate use throughout the day with heavy use at night. I know “picture or it didn't happen". I will definitely take a screenshot at the end of the day to compare.

I sure hope that includes doing some kind of battery intense task like playing games otherwise that's pretty unimpressive. When my Pixel 2 XL was brand new 5 hours screen on time during non-battery intense things like browsing on wifi I could easily get that same 5 hours screen on time with 16 hours off the charger and still be at like 40-45%. It looks like the combination of bigger screen, higher resolution and smaller battery really makes a noticeable difference. Even more than I expected.
This is with mostly browsing and YouTube. I usually have more usage later at night. I also played a little Elder Scrolls Legends, which is very much a battery draining game.
As I do more testing, it appears this phone drains faster than the XL2 in both scenarios. I'll keep testing and post screenshots. I'm hesitant to return my XL2 as a trade-in.
I forgot to plug up last night so this morning I decided top just ride it out and see what I can get as far as screen time. I was thinking of starting a "Battery Life" thread, but no need since I am sure this one will suffice. My time included about 3 or so hours of music using Poweramp and other browsing and chatting and a few downloads. Bluetooth and WiFi on throughout the entire time.

I find that the battery doesn't last quite as long as my pixel xl.... Probably due to the fact that the screen isn't as bright so I have to keep it on max brightness during the day. Didn't have the screen issue on my pixel xl though.

A week and a bit with my brand new 3 XL and I have the same observations too. My 2 XL seemed to have less idle battery drain. Both phones have been rooted & running their latest respective ElementalX kernels.
Have been having a few nagging issues with the 3 XL too which I never experienced with the 2 XL. It refused to connect to my car bluetooth the other morning until I restarted the phone, and the lockscreen screen on/off animations are painfully slow and laggy 80% of the time too...

I have the pixel 3 and SoT is about 3.5-4hrs and I had read a lot that it was better than the p3xl.
I got the p3xl on Tuesday, battery was kinda weird some days but today I am super impressed. Hardly used wifi as well and always has gps on.

I had a P20 Pro until a few weeks ago - I know that's a massive battery but the Pixel 3 XL doesn't even come close. I get maybe 4hrs SOT.
Most disappointing though is the drain when idle - seems to lose about 2% an hour. With the P20 Pro I could leave it off charge overnight and it would only lose about 2% in total.

My phone stays in my pocket quite a bit, but I'm apparently getting phenomenally better battery life than most (certainly the folks reviewing it). Even if I pull it out to watch a 3 hr hockey game while I'm at work, when it's not out and in my face it'll last for over a day easy. I stream music over a Bluetooth speaker a lot and still, nah. Again though, my screen on time is prob a lot less than most and I plug it in for the android auto on my 30 min commute. It's better than my 2xl was and I need to plug it in far less than my iFriends

Of course in my opinion , anyone who owns an android device should be required to spend a minimum of 100 hours reading on this site, even if they have no intention of rooting, or well whatever. As for the issue at hand, I used a little over 13% now after a little more than a day, including overnight no use time, obviously Im a lite user compared to some, but my trusty nexus 6 (5 year old) battery had seen its better days.

Care to elaborate? Did you root? Custom kernel? I'm still on the fence, but only because of google pay. I know there are ways to achieve this even rooted, but still...
Ever had a massive technical problem, and after searching the net for an insane amount of time, you finally find a lost soul having the same issue? Isn't it kind of frustrating when there is only a "Solved it!!!" with no obvious solution?
Just saying. If you solved your issue it would be great to show us how. Maybe there is someone out there having similar problems. You never know.

Honestly it seems to vary user by user. Depends on the apps you have installed, whether you restrict their battery use, turn off notifications, etc. etc.
If you use social media apps, strongly suggest you manually restrict their battery use and turn off notifications. Other phones that have amazing battery life (Huawei for example) do this for you, they aggressively restrict apps, but Google doesn't.. Makes a massive difference. Made a huge difference for me. I went from 10%+ battery drain overnight to about 2%. Same during the workday. The battery drain is hugely improved when it's in my pocket or on the desk through the day.

I've had my Pixel 4 XL for just over a week. Biggest ROI in terms of battery life for me has been turning off Bluetooth Scanning under location settings. I also turned off Always On Display (but I may start testing with those options as I had done that before turning off Bluetooth scanning). Motion Sense, Smooth Display, etc...are all on and working great. I'm at 13% active drain / 1.7% idle drain and my phone goes to Deep Sleep as I would expect. Not finding a need to limit my usage or worry about it...getting 22-24 hours of projected life a day, not charging during the day and not worrying about it. 4-5 hours of screen on time. I'm happy....my Pixel XL was struggling to get through a full day and I had been using various battery packs as needed to allow it to limp along. Really happy so far. I haven't unlocked bootloader or rooted yet....but may head down that path if needed. (Google Store Unlocked version on Verizon)
Edit: Forgot to mention I also disabled Digital Wellbeing and I believe that helped as well.

Mostly nothing was working correctly, the transfer data didnt work, the battery was draining as fast as my old nexus 6 (the reason I decided it was time to get a new phone), couldnt get it to connect to my wifi without turning off security and allowing a first ip address (tech support cant understand that concept), receiving double notifications, fi switch app would take me to the dialer no matter what I pushed, like settings. It was an absolute total mess. I rooted my nexus 6P with Pixel Experience (how awsome is that thank you devs), and fi switch was normal. Thats why I did the factory reset, wiping everything and starting new. Still had to turn off security in wifi till I got it set up, but everything else has gone to normal like it suppose to. Dont like a lot of google stuff, still turning off whatever I can, limit as many sharing and app allowances as possible (dont send stats) only use Bluetooth as needed.

Thanks for the feedback! I really never thought about it this way. My Samsung phones did restrict different apps really fast. That Google does not force this in the same manner never crossed my mind. Also with bluetooth scanning. I had that turned on the whole time, just because i honestly forgot it was there. Same goes with wifi scanning i guess. Will try these out.
I will keep staying unrooted for the time being.

My Pixel 2 XL pulled 3 days 20 hours of projected use after a year of use.
My Pixel 4 XL is pulling just under one day.
I did not copy my device over, I have a fresh install. Wifi and Bluetooth scanning disabled (but really it's 2019, nearly 2020, this shouldn't be an issue)
However, my Pixel 4 XL seems to have had a significant boost to longevity after the December feature update.

Stanby drain is an issue on pixel 4 I think.

If it helps anyone: in the google assistant settings - Open the Settings app > Google > Account Services > Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant - there is a possibility of battery usage "unseen?" in different settings - I had the recognize music going and on the good side it accurately found every tune that played on the radio while I was driving, the downside is it used a lot of battery, you can make a "quicky icon" for the home screen should you so desire, to make it off/on/off easier.

What!? And you were actually using the phone? LOL. I got a 4 days 15 hours estimate with my 2 year Pixel 2 XL and that was from not using it at all because I got the Pixel 4 XL. Haha. Had only 26 minutes of SOT.

That's really not bad at all. Less than 1% an hour standby drain isn't terrible. Especially with the active display.

I don't own a Pixel 4 XL but my understanding is that Always On Display isn't really "always on" on the Pixel 4 XL. It's only on when it detects your presence. A 1% per hour drain with AOD actually being on the entire time would be incredible. A 1% per hour drain with AOD off would be terrible.
Just for comparison when my Pixel 2 XL was new it drained at about 3% over 9 hours (0.333% per hour) with AOD off and about 13% over 9 hours (1.444% per hour) with AOD on. With a 2 generations newer processor and 5% bigger battery I would expect the Pixel 4 XL to be better.

Pixel 4 does have Always On...detecting presence is another option....

Correct, but anywhere near the phone with movement and it triggers it. If its sitting next to you on a table, high chance its going to be on most of the time just from general movement. Now, if you sit it on your desk on the other side of the room, no, its not going to show unless you have it checked to show all the time.

Also, this highly depends what you have set for notifications from apps. Like if email is push or set to refresh on a time schedule, etc. There is so much that goes into this ****. Is it on LTE or Wifi? Cant just make huge blanket statements.

You are correct, however if you use the feature that turns AOD off when you're away, you then have the radar running in the background 100% of the time waiting for you to get in range of the phone to turn AOD on. So it's still great. My 4 XL uses between 0-1% overnight. I'm not sure if AOD is on all night, but it IS on when I am lying there. If you're lying or sitting anywhere near the phone (10 ft or so) with any kind of movement at all, it is on. So is the radar. Factoring that in it's pretty incredible. This thing just sips battery now that it's good and settled in. Same with SOT. it's gone from average/slightly below to excellent.
That said, for the first week or so mine was draining 5% or slightly more overnight. It got better and better over the first few weeks until this point. Now it's brilliant. That's the part that I don't like about reviewers doing hot takes on these things, just reviewing specs on paper rather than the phone itself. Until you've used it for a few weeks-one month, you have no idea how any phone will actually perform long term rendering 98% of the reviews on YouTube completely useless.

A lot of the legit reviews have used the phone for a week or more and others have done a one month later as well. The phone is okay and maybe good at best with battery but it's still a good 1.5 to 2 hours less SOT and many hours less than my Pixel 2 XL was in the same first 7 weeks.

Unfortunately there are precious few legit reviewers, none of the big channels actually do proper reviews. They get the phone a week or two before launch, they spend a day or two with it seldom if ever popping their SIM in, admit they carry more than one phone and drop a 10 minute spec review the moment the embargo lifts. That's not a review. That's a listing of specs and opinion based on specs combined with 10 minutes of footage showing the design. Unfortunately what those folks don't know could fill a warehouse. These are the same people that dismissed wide angle lenses as a gimmick but now that Samsung and Apple have it any phone without it is trash. Or crying about the fingerprint sensor, the "ultimate" in security being gone, when it can be used with a person asleep just like face unlock (though face unlock can be fixed, print readers cannot.). They're just worse than useless when it comes to info on devices.
The statements of bad battery life are patently false. I can't force this phone to get less than 5 hours SOT. Interestingly, reviewers that have actually used the phone directly contradict them. Objectively it's good to great (the XL anyway). I haven't seen a single month in review from a person that's ACTUALLY daily driven the device as their sole phone for a month getting anything less than 5.5 hours SOT with most averaging closer to 6. I'd wager 24 hours per charge with 5-6 hours SOT would be perfectly fine for most people. Picking the phone back up off the shelf and using it again for another 24 hours after an update or two does not constitute a month in review. If they've taken their SIM out one time or used any other phone alongside as a "primary" their review is dismissed out of hand. Not just on the Pixel, but any phone.

If you're in a vacuum I guess that's great. However, when phones get either the same SOT but have more percentage left at the end of a day or can get 8+ hours off a single charge, the Pixel 4 XL is not great and average at best. I'm getting 4-5 hours SOT with an occasional 5.5 when I easily got 6-7 SOT and occasional 8 hours with the Pixel 2 XL. Again, reviewers put the same 1-2 weeks into a review and also see more SOT and battery percentage at the end of the day too. So you can't totally disregard their battery hate because they're putting the Pixel 4 XL on the same daily usage and time period as their other phone reviews.
