Use S10+ 2nd front camera to take photos?, it actually has a wider field of view! - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

Hi.
I was wondering if there's a possibility to actually take pictures with the 2nd "depth" sensor camera on the S10 Plus. I know for a fact that the stock camera App doesn't let you use it, other than to assist the primary camera for the "Live Focus" mode.
Nonetheless, if you type *#0*# on the phone App, you can access a test menu, in which you can actually take pictures and see the difference between these 2 front cameras.
I've attached 2 examples that I took, there you can appreciate that the second camera actually has a considerable wider field of view (in comparison to the primary one, though the quality is inferior), which would be really useful for group selfies, since the "Wide Selfie Mode" from the S9 was removed for some reason.
It would be awesome if someone finds a way to use the 2nd front camera to take wider selfies-

is there no possible way to use the wider front camera? (depth sensor), it would be a bummer since it has nearly the same field of view as the ultra wide angle selfie cam on the LG V50.
Additionally, is there a way to recover the ultra wide selfies mode from the S8?

There has to be a way to use the 2nd camera. As for wide selfie mode, there's probably an app or theme out that lets you do it, but I am not sure.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly, but there's also a possibility that Samsung is not providing any API to access the 2nd front camera, which would be a real shame.

U are right!! Camera capture my quadtriple chin

best alternative camera app?

I loved X-cam on my lg g3. Is there a better camera app for quick Quito mode pictures than the stock g6 one with all it's exciting and sharpening. Pictures look great infill you zoom in at all. I love it for manual mode and timelapse. But not on IG so the square camera is stupid IMO. Just looking for good alt. To the stock one. Camera 360 was decent but even with paid version the UI is awful
I too am looking at 3rd party cameras. But the ones i have are no better and don't do HDR well or panorama well and some are very slow to take a picture. I can't find a camera app to do panoramas well in HD. they're low resolution or stitched all messed up. I gave up on ever doing panoramas with this phone. Every panoramic picture i take is messed up. so much for those reviews on the test units saying it takes flawless panoramas. Also the apps i tried doesn't let me use the wide angle lens either. bummer.

I've used panorama flawlessly. But IMO with the new wide angle there's almost zero need for panorama unless up close.

So the trees don't get double images in panoramas? Both this phone and the original has this problem.

Never had a issue. I tend to not use the wide lens for panorama though. 2nd pic the road dips a bit that's all. 1st pic is only a 3 part panorama not super huge

Camera: DSLR Focus/ Depth of Field?

Hi
I'm not sure if the Galaxy S8 is able to do this but how can you get DSLR style focus where a subject/ person is in focus and background blurry? Can the rear camera do this as well as selfie cam? I haven't seen any options for it.
Seems only the Note 8 has this (or iPhone X, Google Pixel 2)?
Note 8 has second cam, which is x2 telephoto lens, so already has shallower focus depth and rest is done with software. S8 does not have second cam.
And here is the problem: blurred background, called bokeh, is mostly used in portrait photography. Wide angle cams so commonly used on phones should not be used for portrait photography, because due to wide field of view being projected on flat surface you get big distortions and wrong proportion, like big nose for example. Check fish eye lens pictures to see this distortion effect fully. So while you could distort background and make portrait photo with standard phone lens like s8 have, it would look silly. Outside of portrait photos I don't see much use for shallow depth of field, but if you're so inclined you could experiment with photo editing software like photoshop and create same effect. Expect S9 to have dual lens and portrait capability in about 6 months or get Note 8 now if you really want it.

there's an app that does this function very well. AfterFocus. the pro version lets you save in original quality. It only takes a few minutes to get the same result from dual camera devices.
Selective Focus is one of the camera modes out of the box. That is what you are looking for.
I have an S8 and have tried the selective focus mode, which works relatively well as long as the object stays still long enough, however I was reading an article about the Pixel 2 this morning and this extract made me hope that Samsung can also follow Google
"The single-lens portrait mode photos were made possible by its adoption of a dual-pixel sensor - meaning each pixel can be used to both record the image and determine focus rather than just one or the other.
Some of Samsung's handsets already feature the technology, but Google has built on it with proprietary software to make it possible to create a depth map for photos, which can be used to add special effects."
I hope that Samsung can improve the selective mode for the rear camera as the S8 also has a dual-pixel set up, unfortunately the front camera doesn't have dual-pixels
Another thing is I'm hoping that the Google Camera app, which I have running on my S8, should get an update to support this....fingers crossed.

Time to take picture (camera launch speed)

There! Something just happened! Did you take a picture of it? Rate this thread to express how fast the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite can go from "zero to picture". A higher rating indicates that launching the camera app and taking a photo is extremely fast such that you never miss an important moment, like when your cat attacks the couch again.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Sometimes it is superfast, sometimes superslow and sometimes camera opens into all white blank screen and nothing happens
camera is soooo bad, I barely used it,yuck
The camera is pretty fast. Super fast, actually. The app opens immediately, and taking the first picture takes no time at all. And it's pretty well focused. If you want to manually focus a specific point, it takes a lettle more time. But still, pretty fast.
However, the camera sucks. At least the app. I've tried other camera app and thew work a little better, but still... I expected a better camera. I don't know why it has 2 rear cameras. Do they actually do something? Improve light, focusing time, whatever? I cannot see any diference between pictures taken with the secondary camera fisically covered.
Also, did anyone manage to get any good macro picture? You have to shoot really far away from the object in order for the camera to focus it.

For macro pictures, none. It sucks.
For default settings (auto) and fast photos, the stock app.
For extra functionality, I like the Camera MX app.
And I find interesting the lighting treatment of the camera zoom fx app (under the name of hdr, it combines 3 pictures for normal, max and min exposure). It also gives you tons of customization.
I'll give a try to open camera. Haven't tested it, yet.
I'll say neither of them is the "best" . They all use the same camera hardware. It's personal preference on the image treatment or personalization of the camera settings.
I'll set up magiks asap and I'll give a try with camera2api enabled (camera zoom fx let's you shoot on real manual mode).
I can post a picture of each to compare if you want to.

waiting for the results
I'll take the pictures today and I'll try to post them today, too. If not, tomorrow max.
I'll shoot in default settings and HDR. Outdoors, indoors and low-light (all default settings).
Of you want to see something else, let me know.
I've just installed magisk and enabled camera2API to try gcam and Mi A1 and Mi A2 apps. But the pictures I've taken are with regular apps before doing so. Here the go.
https://postimg.cc/gallery/2xord8elu/
1st column --> Camera MX
2nd column --> Camera Zoom FX
3rd column --> Open Camera
4th column --> Stock camera app
As I said. Not major differences. Except in low light situations where ISO must be well adjusted by the app. I'd choose an app for the user experience more than for picture quality, since they all are pretty similar.
did you find any improvement with gcam?
(that can't use the second camera on the back - correct?)
It's a very generic camera, and with the 2.2 aperture, expecting good results on low lights..well, a stretch. But it does okay for the price. Front camera is rather good and it's probably the only phone in this price range to provide EIS in video which works really well.
Hello, I'm creating an account in order to give my real-life review of this phone. The previous phones I had were HTC One M8, LG G6.
Camera launching speed from the lockscreen and from the drawer is very good, to me. Especially since the Android Pie update.

Selfie quality

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the Xiaomi Poco F1 performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I've rated selfie cam average coz it's a mixed bag
In artificial lighting conditions it produces somewhat blurry images. In fact selfies in complete darkness with the screen flash look better than selfies in artificial lights such as tubelights, bulbs etc. Bokeh selfies are better with more details as compared to normal selfies.
I'm talking about selfies with 0 beautification.
I must admit that I'm coming from nexus 5 which has 1.2 mp front camera so maybe I was expecting a bit too much from the 20 mp cam of Poco f1!
Come to think of it, various hardware checking apps show front camera as 5 mp!
May be they are detecting secondary camera at the back as front camera...anyone knows any app that detects all 3 cameras (megapixel and sensor used) correctly??!
It is correct with 5mp. The Cam combines four Pixels top one Superpixel.
I thought it's detecting 5 mp is secondary back camera and mistaking it for front cam

So you mean the front camera is actually a 5 mp cam and it should be denoted as such in hardware info apps such as CPU X? This explains why the selfie quality wasn't much much better as I had expected. I'm not that impressed with this 4 pixel combining to form a Superpixel technology....at least in poor lighting conditions.
It would also mean that the secondary 5 mp camera at the back isn't mentioned in the information generated by such apps!
Shouldn't it be mentioned?
I hope I'm clear on this point.
Noticed nowadays new camera unable to capture sharp pic for grp selfie
Grp selfie is where u at front n few members at the back to ensure everyone fit it in the picture
But what happen is only ur pic is sharp while the rest quite blur
This not happened during single lens with fix focus like s7 or 2016 model
How to fix this ?
I must admit that the selfies come out blurry when taken indoors especially when taken with volume rocker. It shakes up due to the press of the button. Do you guys face that?

I assume you might already be aware, they do have the option to use the fingerprint scanner as shutter.

Yes indeed. But just verifying if it's only my phone gets blurry due to such small shakes.

It's the same with me also, even on the rear camera most of the pictures taken on artificial lighting conditions are blurry because of that shaking.
The correct name for this thread is "Blurry camera" Quality
Even with the tripod its taking blurry shot - Cool is it ?
Need a Fix for this soon
The youtube reviews were good regarding the front camera & even the photos were good. Were the review units different or the camera hardware in the 8gb+256gb?

I see the phone uses a 20MP sensor from Samsung.
This not a real 20MP camera...I mean, it can't be! Or it's very, VERY bad, even in natural light conditions.
The quality of selfies is way inferior to the 12MP sensor of the back camera.
The amount of details captured by it makes it look more like a 5-8MP sensor...

It's pretty good considering Huawei and Samsung selfie are overfiltered and poor quality.
This one can see your pores and pixel bins to prevent noise.
Hi look at this

You guys are completely crazy or have fault devices. The frontal camera is absolutely amazing. My girlfriend have a XS and its there's no comparison, F1 is much better in every way. You just need to turn off Beautiful Mode and increase sharpness on Options to make things more clear. It's one of the best selfie cameras that I ever see in my life. Get out of here you guys.
But there's a issue that Xiaomi need to fix. The camera dont focus acurately subjects at 1 meter from device. If you use Selfie Group Mode, the problem is gone.
The issue is with focus which is fixed at a distance of around 50cm. Beyond that, objects get blurred.

Wide angle camera to be primary camera - phone used as dashcam

Hello,
Does anyone know if there is any MOD to set the 8mp camera (wide) as first camera so the phone can be used as a dashcam?
I've installed a few dashcam apps and all of them are able to use only main sensor or selfie camera. I was thinking if the main camera is set as being the wide angle sensor then the apps will pick up image from that and it will cover more, which will make it perfect.
Thank you!
May cover more, but not as good of picture. 8mp vs 16mp telephoto. Main sub as wide is not possible that I am aware of.
I've experimented with this too and the wide angle definitely works better because it has a fixed focus. Even if you set a focus point using the main I still had issues with it constantly becoming blurry trying to refocus. I'd be interested in this as well eventually when I stop using this as my DD

Well there is also the manual camera mode where it won't do that if u manual set, not tap.
I don't mind if I loose a bit of quality.
The way I want to use it is with an app like AutoBoy and have it recording from the wide angle camera, but the app doesn't have a setting to change the camera to Wide, only main camera, that's why I was looking for a Mod.

After thinking for a few, it might be possible, might, if you know how to edit files. In this case the camerafeatures.xml. Do a backup first because it is sensitive. If not, I might be able try. No guarantee tho.
