I cannot make Recents and all Notifications dark - Samsung Galaxy S10e Themes, Apps, and Mods

OK, after a couple days, using my 8/256 Unlocked on Verizon, this is what I think...
Pros:
Size
Smooth & quick operation.
Face unlock is quick.
Cons:
Pie
Fingerprint Sensor does not like fingers on left hand.
No HARD PRESS HOME TO WAKE.
Cannot find the 3 accuracy settings for Location / GPS. Were these removed in Pie?
No ROUTINES in GOODLOCK. (Bixby Routines are not acting the same.)
Unable to make all notifications dark. I've tried NIGHT MODE, THEMES and SWIFT INSTALLER (which won't work on Pie w/o root ?)
Google notifications are white, also.
I know some don't think dark is a big deal, but when using a phone in a nav dock and driving at night, white did not only hurts the eyes, but kills night vision.

For dark notifications (and other bunch of useful stuff) download QuickStar in Goodlock.

I had Quickstar, though I didn't list it.
There was so much I didn't like about the S10e that I sold it.
Thanks, anyways!

The Good and Bad LG Software Features

This is a thread for those coming from an AOSP ROM like Vanilla Android or CyanogenMod or even from other OEM overlays like Sense. What would you say are the good and LG features?
For me, good:
Heads up display implantation of incoming calls when screen is on that ensures you don't break your workflow.
Little hovering window to show a call is in loudspeaker in the background with the time on it
Though almost standardised, having call controls in the notification drawer
Bad:
Auto expanded notifications
Unable to disable the clips tray
Unable to remove toggles from within the drawer
Battery percentage being to the left of the battery
Unable to customise lockscreen
Implementation of software navigation keys breaks functions like hiding the keyboard
Customisation of the share intent with everything being ticked all the time
I only had my phone for half a day, but already some software feature I really like:
"Clip Tray" (Multi-clipboard).
Double-knock to wake and go to sleep (I don't use knock-code, haven't tried it yet)
And something I really don't like:
Keyboard sluggishness. When I type (using flow), it's always 1 or 2 words behind... I'm going to replace it quickly with Google keyboard or SwiftKey

Agree with you about the keyboard... I hate it. I was using s4 with keyboard ported from s5. Is sluggish and i keep typing space more often..
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Free mobile app
I've noticed that the keyboard is sluggish with more than one language selected.
I really like the keyboard. Haven't tried swipe input on it yet. Overall i'm really impressed by the UI. Its got great flat icons, beautiful selection of wallpapers and lots of options to customise.
Knock on and knock code are great. Clip tray is a very useful feature and the popup reply notifications for the messaging app are really handy and have stopped me from using Hangouts as my main SMS app.
The downsides so far are no search on server within the email app and no option to show the weather on the smart notice widget without turning on GPS. Also for some reason LG took out the wireless storage feature from the G2 which was very useful. They should have kept it.
Bad:
When adding contacts, the default option is to add to "Phone" with no way of changing it.
Oversharpening of text. More obvious on certain fonts with black text on white background.
Camera options are way too limited.
Overall I'm quite happy with the software. Looks pretty good and some of the added features are quite useful.

Anyone Using A Screen Filter/Night Mode App With Oreo?

I don't know if it's just me, but I was previously using the app midnight to dim my phone at night & had no issues.
It appears with Oreo, that the status bar & when you pull down the status bar don't change with the screen.
So while the screen is only set to say 30%, the status bar & nav bar are full brightness. Again, I don't recall this issue
with 7.1.2
Is anyone successfully using an app that actually dims everything with Oreo, & if not, is this an issue with Oreo?
Thanks!
I am having this issue with my device and it's driving me crazy. I did not have the issue with Nougat, but in Oreo none of the apps work on the status bar and notification shade. This is exacerbated by the fact that the notification shade is blinding white now instead of dark gray so it lights up the room when I pull it down at night in the dark.
I normally use the app "Darker Pro," but I tried about five different screen dimming apps last night and they all have the exact same issue so I think it's an Oreo thing. I also used to use the app Snap Swipe Drawer and noticed that I can no longer activate it from swiping on the notification bar. I think Oreo is not allowing anything to draw over the status bar or notification shade area.

Exactly! The notification bar is extremely white which just furthers the issue. The white was a poor choice in my opinion and is hideous.
I've tried 2 other apps & no luck. Plus many don't get updated.
I emailed the developer of Midnight & he said it would be a priority, so that's good.
I'm glad someone else uses these apps. I was beginning to think everyone enjoyed being blinded by their phone at night.

I don't understand the issue... Just dim your display normally using the brightness slider. Everything gets dim that way.
If you want a working night mode too (blue light filter), flash the o pixel mod in the themes section and use that too.
Or even f.lux would work if you have root.
This is a complete non-issue because dimming the display works 100% without any 3rd party apps.

The issue isn't the fact you can't dim the display as we all know you can move the slider.
It's night mode apps only dimming the screen itself & not the notification bar. You may have your brightness in night mode to really dark, but pull down the status bar & it's 100% bright. This issue didn't exist on 7.1.2 with these apps. I was specifically using Midnight with 0 issues.
I'm not rooted, so no flashing. Also there was no need before O as these issues didn't exist.

Well it sounds like the app needs to be updated to work on Oreo properly.
One of the reasons there are dev preview is for developers to test their apps on the new Android update and it would seem that this dev didn't do that.
Can I ask why you don't just use the brightness slider? It's one of the simplest things to do if you want your screen dim.

Because it isn't dark enough at night and early in the morning when I like my eyes to adjust. If it went darker as part of stock Android, it would eliminate the need for these apps.
Personal preference. My wife can't see crap & has to have the brightness on her phone up even at night. Drives me nuts & blinds the crap out of me.

Okay gotcha, makes sense.
Hopefully they update that app soon then.
If I come across any other app similar to that, I'll mention it in this thread then
I've been using f.lux and that seems to be working OK with Oreo.
I used Twilight Pro when I was on DP4 and while it worked, it did have the persistent blinding overlay notification. You can manually mute that for 2 hours tops at a time or there is a way to keep it muted with Tasker. https://www.xda-developers.com/hide-app-running-background-notification-android-oreo/
Does your app provide administration rights capability? There would be an entry in device administrators for your app [name]. For example, I use Bluelight Filter and if I want to use full dimming capability, including overlay, I have to give admin permission. The trade off being that some Android security lock features are disabled - such as locking Android pre-boot with a password.
It's been posted in another topic, but as far as "muting" the messages about background notifications in Oreo, this is a new Android security feature with no workaround yet and you can only set it to a low priority for notifications. At least that way it will minimize to one line when there are other app notifications, and remove the icon from the status bar.

Where are you finding device admin for bluelight? I had it installed, didn't work, but reinstalled trying to find what you stated, but no luck.
I've got a device admin apps settings, but it isn't listed.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Sorry it's not device admin, it's accessibility. My bad. This is the permission that's required for notifications and screen overlay being dimmed. It's a trade-off. So far I don't use it because I prefer enhanced encryption.
What I loved about my screen dimming app is that it did so automatically at set times and precisely to the right level. The brightness is now at daytime strength the first time I turn it on at bedtime and too dark when i first need it in the morning, not to mention fiddling with the slider to get it just right. Is there another way to schedule the brightness levels?
Still no one with luck with this?
Once it's a cross-device problem, why not move the thread to a general forum?

Did you find a fix for your problem?
Personally I am rooted ONLY for the night mode included on the pixel 2 mod. Furthermore, I was looking for a way to only have the night mode w/o any other pixel feature but couldn't find a way.
I know you said you aren't rooted and I can guess your unwillingness to do so, but honestly that's the best way to get a properly working night mode.
Take into acct. that I've tried a lot of apps and none were satisfactory. As I said before, this is the only reason I'm rooted.
Anyways, I hope you found a way to get a night mode working on your phone.
Any success? Really would like 100% overlay coverage including notifications, everything.
If you web browse at night you can invert the screen colours, which helps a bit until you hit a 'dark' image
I use Darker Pro and yes I can confirm that the status bar and notifications/qs panel does not get darker on oreo.
I used the same app all the time with nougat and it worked flawless.
It is a android oreo issue. Google has disabled apps to draw over system ui elements in oreo, that's what the darker pro playstore description says. I initially thought we need root to enable it. I've been trying to search for root apps that would let me do it but no luck there either.
Alright. I got a bit of a Work around. You will need root. Install Kernel Adiutor and go to Screen option. Now lower the Red, Green and Blue values equally. The screen will get dimmer.
I know this isn't as convenient as using a simple app, but atleast it's something.
Oh, and if you're running a lineage OS based rom you won't need root or the kernel Adiutor. Just go to Live Display in setting and you'll find the same Red, Green and Blue adjustment there.
This one works over both bars, but needs xposed:

[DISCUSS] What are you doing to improve your Pixel 2XL

Hi all crazy people dishing out enough to buy a used car for a shiny new phone!!!
So...this thread is for ideas on how to improve (make as it should be) your Pixel 2XL...I'll start.
I enabled Developer options and set animations to 0.5X.
I enabled systemui tuner to turn off some icons in that cluttered status bar.
Why put an LED capable of so many colors on a phone and only have it blink green occasionally? Madness Google!!!
Light Manager went on first so I could have a charging and charged light as well as different colors for different apps.
Ooo...Google added a hidden trick that if you have black wallpaper (edges at least) then the app drawer background will also black out....what about all the other system apps Google?!!! And what? We have to add photos to black borders if we want them as wallpaper? I say thee NAY!
Rootless substratum - Andromeda to the rescue! Most themes work well on Oreo and you can have your dark UI back on everything...which as a side note blue tint does not show up on!
Once you get that up and running, I put Pitch Black theme on and also grabbed a center clock mod that works great!
Looking around for a circle battery mod that works and some way to mod the colors of the status bar icons. Oreo is being a pain for some themers.
A little more work and who needs root?
Anyone find a good mod to fix the color saturation? Or at least make Vivid Color switch do something?
So...what have you done? :highfive:
Great idea for a thread.
I had Nova Prime on mine with the Google Companion plug in to enable the Google swipe and it worked great to hide the dock at the bottom. Hopefully I will get nice one from Google tomorrow that's defect free.

Cool. In the past that would kill the LED as well if I remember. Guess that got that figured out.
Cool thread. And the light manager idea is great. I don't understand why Google doesn't have a charging LED.

Nova Prime.
Substratum and a dark theme
Changed the navbar icons to hollow ones to help with burn in
icon pack
light manager

Anyone having memory management issues? And has done something to improve it? Frequently getting redraws with only 6-10 apps open. :|
I originally had andromeda and substratum setup, naptime x (via adb), was using sprite to get center clock and colour options for the status and nav bars. Of course opted for nova launcher over pixel launcher!
OK, had the Oreo colorizer installed to improve the colors but then seen it using 2% battery after a full day...saw there was an update and after mashing update phone a 100 times finally sideloaded it! The saturated option is what I am used to and I think are great! I see some prefer just boosted...a compromise between boosted and saturated would be great.
Have gotten 3 days without charging the phone whereas at best I could make it 2 on the 6P! I may just stay unrooted if Substratum Andromeda would work a little better...takes like 10 tries sometimes to connect the ADB Andromeda script. And Pitch Black seems to update the theme almost everyday!
Loving this phone now!
Magisk 14.4
Substratum - Swift Black
Nova Prime
Tapet - Black Wallpaper
Removed Nav Bar - Using Swift Navigation instead.

Usually we don't like telling people this but the connection of the phone to their Oreo device is based on the computer they used, for example, some of the Macs I tried kept disconnecting the ADB shell/disabling USB debugging and thus, disables the app - which gets understandably annoying.
I usually test on my main rig regarding Andromeda, and it's been running great with 5 devices attached at all times, including when they are disconnected.

How are you getting 3 days on a charge? I'm getting just under 2. Not that I'm complaining, but 3 would be badass.
Awesome thread idea -- was tired seeing so many negative threads concerning this phone. This phone has been nothing but great to me.
Here's what I did!
- Global full immersive mode (did this AS SOON as i unboxed it, after unlocking bootloader)
- Completely disabled the nav bar (never pops up)
- LMT Pie Controls
- Dropped down the animations to .5x
- Nova Prime
- Light Flow/Manager
- Substratum (pitch black theme)
- Disabled apps I dont use (uninstalled the ones i could)
After applying Nov. update, I decided to Root for a few reasons:
- Complete removal of the nav bar (editing the build.prompt)
- Got tired of seeing ads in Chrome Beta
- Completely removed apps within the system I dont use instead of just disabling them (nice and slim)
This phone has been absolutely incredible - insanely smooth with zero lag. No burn-in (obviously due to my set up) or anything negative about this phone that has been reported.
More than likely going to be on the Nov. build until ROMs start come rolling in -- until then, im completely satisfied.

Nothing special at all! I am using it the same as I did my 6P. I do clear all recents 2 or 3 times a day to make sure nothing is running in the background. Have brightness about 40% with adaptive brightness on. Am on Google Fi so make sure to be on wifi most of the day....from experience poor signal is a big drain. I keep location on battery saving which really helps Google Fit and my smartwatch be more accurate. Probably could get even more out of it if I did not play a battery hog called Dice with Buddies.
Dumped the Oreo Colorizer app for sideloading the November update...Saturated is my lobster!!!!
Anyone find a circle battery mod that works yet?
Loving my 2xl so far, aside from not being able to find a glass screen protector that lasts more than 2 days without dust under it!
Running sideloaded Nov. update,
Magisk 14.4 rooted
light manager is a must! (different color leds for work/personal app notifications)
substratum swift black
and good ol adaway to keep the ads at bay.
Would love a circle clock mod
and would KILL for a volume adjustment mod (set notification and ringtone to separate levels)

My Android P DP2 Experience

Just wanted to add my 2 cents on the DP2 of Android P.
So far my favorite thing is how fluid it is and how nice the animations are (it's more fluid than Oreo in every way -- animations, scrolling, opening apps, switching windows, etc.) . The animations are especially nice when using the Pixel launcher. You lose certain animations when using 3rd party launchers. I've always used third party launchers since 2011 because stock ones never have the features I want but The Pixel launcher on Android P is pretty dang cool. I still miss options like no widget padding, icon packs, icon and folder resizing, gestures, custom desktop and app drawer spaces, but even losing all that is worth it with how amazing Android P runs with the Pixel launcher.
My battery life was terrible the first 2 days and I was considering going back to Oreo but it seems to have settle down now. I still feel I was getting slightly better battery life on Oreo but I can't say for sure. I know others have said they are getting better battery life on P but so far that hasn't been my experience.
I haven't run into any major bugs and have only experienced a couple minor issues like brief freezing (1-2 seconds and has only happened a few times), and had recent apps freeze up twice but hitting the home button fixes it. I know some have reported a lot of apps crashing but I don't use many apps and haven't had any issues there.
For me it's a DD. Wi-Fi Tethering, calling, texting, bluetooth, and GPS all work with no issues.
I'm not a fan of some of the new UI changes but overall it definitely seems like a good step up from Oreo. I can't wait to see how it develops over the next 6 months.
Nice write up! Agree this P is getting better and better!

Could be an issue with the beta... I never thought much about it.
I beta test FB as well, and had issues trying to get the app to install too. I have it installed on my s9+, but couldn't get that one to update, so I found the apk for the version that's on the s9+, and it was able to install on the Pixel 2xl DP2. This leads me to believe it's the FB app itself, and not the phone.

Perfect! Now to hunt down the latest beta APK .. looks like 172.0.0.51.93 is the latest version.
I went back to Oreo the same day I flashed P DP2. This was the same day DP2 was released. I don't remember every detail but here are the things that made me go back:
- A handful of apps would simply not work/open. I forgot which ones they were.
- I don't like the way the Quick Settings look.
- I don't like it that the Quick Settings wont open a quick detailed view and instead just open the settings app. Seems minor, but is a step-back if you ask me.
- QS icons in landscape mode are out of place.
EDIT: - Accessing the settings app via notification drawer now requires you to pull down the drawer completely. That's because the gear icon becomes only visible/accessible when it's fully expanded, while in previous Android versions, like O, the gear icon was visible even on a collapsed notification drawer.
I reeeeally love the new sound controls!
very ugly LTE icon
Literally the only thing I don't like is that the gesture bar is still eating up screen space like the nav bar did and WTF on the LTE font/icon. There is no reason to not expand displayed content all the way to the edge of the display and have the pill hover over the content. Also I see no reason for the back button. If swiping in one direction takes you back to the last used app, make swiping the other direction the back button inside an app. Other than that, I much prefer the roundness of the UI seeing the the display corners of my Pixel 2XL are rounded. It just looks more cohesive. I was a huge fan of Flux Ui, so P taking on that styling cue is another plus to me. Also the animations are much better. I haven't tested a full day of usage for screen on time yet without my phone touching a charger at some point, but the fact that I'm consistently getting a 1 to 2 percentage battery drop overnight is already better than any android version I've been on.

Agreed. That's is one of the new ui changes I'm not a fan of at all. It looks like it belongs on a phone from 6 years ago. Perhaps they did for people who are far sighted but it would be nice to have the option to use the old little LTE and 3g icons.

The gesture bar needs some refinement. I hate the back button as well. They need to at least make it have rounded corners and solid to match the rest of the ui. The sharp corners and hollow look really doesn't match and looks awful.
LTE and 3G icons are awful.
For some reason my battery just isn't performing as well on P as it did on Oreo. Especially the AOD -- it chews my battery up. It still easily get through the day with plenty of juice to spare and I work at home and always have a charger handy so it's not a problem.

Software (ease of use, features, etc)

Double Tap Gestures Control
Overall POCO F1 is a great and easy to use for so many people with revamped POCO launcher.
Double tap to wake and Raise to wake features are working fine.
It is difficult to lock the screen always by pressing the power button.
If Double tap to lock and long Press Fingerprint sensor to lock the screen is present then it will be more user-friendly.
Please add those features in next update.

There is a shortcut that if you press a navigation button, it will lock the screen. I have it on now. I press "backwards" for a second and the screen goes off.

Put a screen off widget on the home screen . It is a system widget so doesnt create issues or battery drain.
Display feature
Found this feature in MIUI. When you expose the sensors to bright light(sunlight or torch), the screen tints to light color. For example a black UI turns to grey UI on exposure to light. It's not auto brightness because i never use auto brightness. I have tested it on a Redmi Note 5 pro and the same thing happens on it too. I am not sure how useful it is for people using this phone.
Overall it's great and fast as a bullet, but I found one thing.
When I scroll page up and down, if the "reading mode" is on, you can see red color dragging behind letters on page. Especially if it's white text on black background, night or dark mode in some apps. So much so, that I had to turn reading mode off.

Snappy but slightly juttery due to that, would prefer stock miui 10 animations rather than the sped up ones. Themes don't work properly either
Notifications issue on lock screen
my notifications won't appear on lock screen after unlocking the device. 1st it's show up then the 2nd time it's gone even though i didn't open the notification.
why??
please help me.
the MIUI is convoluted for me, I've been using Xioami phones for almost 4 yrs now, (Mi Max, A1, and Poco) there are many unnecessary bloat in the software making the UI tedious to use most of the time, notifications are limited and needs a little tweak, unlike stock android, notifications works out of the box, also another minor annoyance to me is the Poco launcher, even after changing the icons, some keeps on return to their squary look, ruining the looks, but all of this can be solved by just flashing a custom ROM which everyone will do here in XDA

Notifications are an issue on MIUI - if you pull down the notification shade once you unlock, I believe they stop showing on lock screen. Even if you haven't opened the notification. This is not for all notifications but I did notice this happening.
Screen Touch Issue
The screen responds for other than human skin touch like headset wire, cloths and other stuff when u keep the phone in the pocket without lock also opens the apps due to body touch,
It annoying and irritating

Thanks, will do
Basically I hate MIUI the main reason for me which convinced me to buy this device is the SNAPDRAGON 845.
MIUI is the worst UX I've ever had on a phone. There is no logic in the settings, so that I end up searching for everything instead of navigating as I did on every stock device. You can't see notifications because of the badly implemented notch. Background services are being killed for no reason (i understand the need with the non play store Chinese apps though).
Also I don't get all that bloat on the phone. Nasty facebook app, some xiaomi calendar, notes what ever app. And all the apps asks for permission, they don't actually need. And why can't I disable most of the apps, nor can I fully delete them (without root). Also, you can't block them from sending notifications. LineageOS here I come
The only nice thing IMO is the notification dropdown where I can see current download speed, data being used today and data left on the plan. Luckily I can install LineageOS in few days (due to that unlock time period one has to wait).

Try Using a launcher that will help you change the UI of the device.
i'm use various xiaomi phones but the only one i use miui is original mi note ( don't have CM support lol) MIUI is crap to my eyes and heavy bloated, notifications don't show for no reason. Always on AOSP and LOS.
there is a option for lock screen " Double tap to lock screen" option available under home screen & Recents menu
4K 60 fps + Bitrate 100Mbps for third-party video camera applications
Will 4K 60 fps support appear in third-party video camera applications?
