Hi folks,
I'm looking for feedback on oleophobic coating.
No matter whether it's the native glass or screen protectors, I just need to look at my phone and within seconds it's a mass of disgusting fingerprints.
Has anyone here any experience/recommendations of oleophobic products that actually work at keeping fingerprints at bay?
Your feedback would be much appreciated, even if it's only to confirm my thoughts that they're all just 'snake oil'.

I tried some products, and not a single one worked, I just accepted the fact, only way to reduce finger print smudges is to keep hands reasonably clean, cleanning the screen repeatedly or compulsively will at some point make micro scratches due to very tiny silica particles in the dust, this, I learned the hard way...
2 second wipe of my display and it's pristine again. Also, this is a Note device so I'm constantly using my S-Pen which helps lower the amount of fingerprint smudge.
I haven't touched the bare factory glass, so can't comment there. But the factory installed screen protector was very oleophobic in my experience. And my Whitestone Dome is almost impossible to leave fingerprints on it. Maybe you just have naturally greasy fingers?
Now the back glass? Ha! If I look at it, it gets a fingerprint mark.

The area where I swipe with my thumb is completely missing oleophobic coating.
I even bought my first leather case ever the day I removed the protective film.
Anyone know If Samsung has any warranty for that kind of stuff?

Doubtful IMHO because the screen works and detects your touch input. If your having to wipe it a lot before it will work then make sure your not smearing something onto the screen.
The oleophobic coating can wear off and from what I can interpret that's normal wear and tear (especially if your having to wipe the phone a lot) and not manufacturer defect. Granted it's always best to get a hold of Samsung yourself and ask them if it is covered under warranty... It may very well be, but only they will be able to tell you for sure with your phone.
Side note - If your trying to use the fingerprint sensor and can't without wiping the screen first then (based on your wording) your maybe doing it wrong. You don't swipe your finger on the sensor... You touch or tap your finger on the sensor. You can always also try deleting and re-registering your fingerprints using the instructions it provides, and also consider ensuring the phone firmware is up to date (in case any patches/fixes are included).
It's the oleophobic coating that has Weared out in that area.
If the screen is locked I unlock it with my fingerprint, and after that I swipe it open with my thumb.
And for some reason the oleophobic coating disappeared at that spot across the screen after a month's use.
So to be able to use my fingerprint, I have to clean the screen from the smear first.

My phone screen gets dirty and full of fingerprints. Despite that I have zero issues with the ultrasonic fingerprint detection.
Now if the screen gets extremely dirty thats a different matter... but I'm talking more then just a finger print or smudge of a finger print. I'm talking things like if I handle foods or materials (especially ones that leave sticky residue on the screen) that leaves a residue on the screen. This could cause me some issues, but that is understandablly normal and why I clean my phone once a week using a soft microfiber cloth.
I just wanted to throw this in even though I'm mad late, but I had my note10 replaced on warranty. I specifically stated that the oleophobic coating had worn out too soon and I believed it to be a defect. It's only been a few months since then and it's already worn out again. I'm gonna try a Whitestone Dome.
I'm using IQ Sheild. I wipe it down every now and then with a dry microfiber cloth, dampen slightly if needed.
Looks great at the 3 month mark with no scratches or mars.
It still retains its original surface feel/qualities.
If I need to replace it tomorrow I got my money's worth out of it. Very pleased with its performance.
After 10 months, I have zero scratches and the oleophobic coating still works, not as day one, but reasonably well, at least it is still very easy to clean after smudging appears, I kept the preimstalled film for three months, at that point, it was somewhat scratched, and made the screen look ugly, I peeled it off, and to this very day, I enjoy the naked display in its full glory

It will be fine until it faceplants on gravel etc or you get sand rubbing across it.
I live in the desert. It took only 6 months of no screen protector to get my S4 screen scratched even though I kepted it as clean as possible. Gorilla glass 6 is not more scratch than 4... the writings on the wall.
I did the S4 scratch test as an experiment as the LCD was already heat damaged.
The 10+ is always in a case with a screen protector and is spotless. I have zero issues with useablility or viewability and a high degree of necessary protection for a $1 G device.
Cleaning: best to a microfiber cloth to clean to glass or plastic. Ok to use dry, shake it out first even if just cleaned.
Use pure water for it's final rinse when washing.
I've used this method extensively on pro cam equipment including the plastic covered LCD displays without scratches. Always carefully clean off heavy debris like mud first though with running water.
Cloth, paper towels etc -will- scratch glass*, best not to use to clean optics with.
*only takes a grain or two of sand. Microfiber clothes help keep contaminants away from the item being cleaned very effectively.
I share with you the sand problem, as I live some 100 meters away the beach line, there is always wind blowing, and at some times, really strong gusts, not to mention when it is stormy, and yes, sand is a real nightmare
Yeah at least the 10 is well sealed... the older Notes weren't.

This doesn't surprise me.
Your dry fingers/palms are actually abrasive.
They can and do polish glass.
On large concave telescope mirrors they use the palm of their hands in the last phases of shaping it.
I've polished out very fine scratches on L glass lens coatings* using just a clean dry finger. It takes about half an hour.
*these optic coatings are hard and very thin. Without them the optics are degraded.

Where are all the "trying to scratch the SGS2 screen with a butcher knife" videos ???
Samsung went to great lenghts to make the screen both scratch resistant, and finger friendly (meaning oil resistant, using a very special coating). They are advocating a non screen-protector use. So, where are all the videos of people showing us it is indeed scratch resistant ?
(to think of it, I haven't seen any durability tests done for the SGS2, which kinds of make you wonder...).

They are not saying the screen can't be scratched, rather not easily. The knife test was always used as a proof that a screen is indeed harder to scratch. But I haven't seen any test like that for the SGS2...
My fear is that the very special coating they put on the screen (the coating that makes it oil-resistant and such a joy to slide your fingers on) IS scratchable, and will not survive a knife test.
That coating must be rubbish, as i think i've rubbed mine off wiping the fingerprints off. everytime i pull it out my pocket now there always a big smudge on it.
Yeah the fingerprint resistant coating scratches VERY easily. There was a thread somewhere here that had a guy posting about trying to remove a scratch with a polishing agent. He did get rid of the scratch but ended up removing the outer coating aswell.

Second that, i used it the first day without any screen protector and it was smudged all over with fingerprints. My hands were clean, i'm not a car mechanic Next day i bought a screen protector, at least that will protect it from scratches, since i can see my fingerprints with or without a screen protector.
I leave these advance test to more experienced and much more brilliant individuals.

1. He DID scratch it eventually !, look at 3:02 minutes.
2. This is not the S2 device, rather the S1. The S2 has a special oil-resistant coating, which the S1 does not have. There is question whether this new coating is more sensitive to scratch than the Gorilla Glass itself.
Scratch resistant doesn't mean it's scratch proof. Everything can be overcome when countered with the correct amount. Gorilla glass does help preventing scratches but it is not the ultimate armour against scratches.
Dear god what a frigging fiasco. Not only does every speck of dust adhere to the back of the screen protector, despite the application solution, but said dust particles seem to ave seriously deformed the plastic, so now the screen protector has zits.
Moving on to the entirely insufficient carbon fiber skin, there's not enough pieces to cover the sides, and the back piece is cut too small, always leaves a couple of millimeters of glass visible around the edge.
Moral:do NOT buy for the Xperia Z3!

Thats your opinion.
I have it as just a screen protector and it is fine. Much better than other protectors because with a case on it, it doesn't lift the screen protector edges.
The only issue I have with it is the screen oils up bad from fingerprints, easily fixed with one or two wipes over fabric

You're supposed to install screen protectors in a dust free environment. Try turning the hot water on in the shower and waiting ~10 minutes, then try to install it.
Clearly you don't know very much.
Ghost Armor is the absolute worst of the wet-applied screen protectors. The whole idea behind wet-applied ones is so that the fluid captures the dust so it can be squeegied out from underneath the screen protector. Ghost Armor's adhesive, however, seems to grab onto every speck of dust it can find (apparently it's also got a static attraction component) and literally will not let go. Not even tape pulls it off, you have to soak it down and then scrape it off with a fingernail...at which point more dust gets pulled in and adheres. Any dust. Even in a humid bathroom. Horrible design.
Skinomi, Zagg, ArmorSuit, all of them work wonderfully in the same environment and under the same conditions. Ghost Armor? They can't even measure phone dimensions or create properly cut and sized skin pieces, so I guess asking them to create a proper wet-applied TPU screen protector is too much to ask.

I have used Ghost Armor many times, but have quit using wet-applied protectors in favor of glass protectors. (If I use one at all)
I guess your dust is more dusty than my dust.
I installed cheap mumbi display protectors on the front and back when i got the phone. Both without a single spot of dust or air under them. I don't even want to install my screen protector made of glass, as i then have to pull of the perfect installed normal protector.
Before installation, i had to wipe the screen several times as there was always new dust on it, i did not apply them wet or in my bathroom. Absolutely no problems, so i don't understand how there can be so much dust under the protector if anyone knows what he's doing.
Again, I can get any brand on completely dust-free, except for these things. Ergo, something is wrong with these things.

It's completely possible you had a bad install...
Perhaps they use a better adhesive. I've never had any problem installing Ghost Armor, or any other "brand" screen protector.

Maybe so. I think I read at one point that their protectors could optionally be installed dry, so maybe they're designed that way. But better isn't necessarily good. And I notice their instructions specify a wet install now.
Incidentally I just tried scraping off the dust and reapplying the thing. Only this time in my relatively dust free datacenter. And guess what? It managed to find some dust from somewhere. Damn, they should compete with Swiffer.
Anyway my emergency Skinomi will be here on Thursday. In the meantime this screen is driving me nuts though.

Interesting, I have used it on four phones, and not a single spec of dust on any of them if you prepare your surface correctly, I normally keep the phone screen facing the ground to stop dust settling on it, then apply holding the phone sideways as to keep as smallest surface area exposed to falling dust
we just purchased galaxy s7 edge last 2 weeks and there is 2 hairline scratches already i mean our family don't have point nails and my mom don't bring it outside whenver she goes its just on the house
and the home button has 1 scratch already wtf pls help?

You must buy a cover for this device. Moving with it inside your home, not putting in your pocket, placing it around, it's a definitely risky situation: there could be something that scratch back surface or front surface. Fortunately edges allow cover producers included Samsung to place higher corner at the top and bottom, so it stays on the front without touching what's leaned on. Glass scratches! EVER, gorilla will never tell you
I have the same issue.
I got my device on Monday, Tuesday morning i noticed the first big scratch on top of the screen.
Wednesday morning i noticed another one, this time on the bottom.
They are rather huge, and the funny thing is that when i clean the device, the scratches are gone.
When i use the device and the screen is covered with fingerprints, then they reappear. So I must assume that the oleophobic coating is damaged.
And i think I found out where it happened. In the pocket of my jeans on the inside I have stitches . Seems that when i move around, these stitches will rub on the device and destroy the coating.
This is the first phone where this happened. Ever.
Now i ordered a oleophobic spray and hope that I can repair it.

Fusso. Amazon. Expensive. I use rain x though. Apply liberally and then wipe liberally with slight damp microfiber cloth. May need to wipe a couple days to get it to desirable level of smoothness and not leaving bad streaks. But I also do this in screen protectors. I never use the glass directly.

Silly. Samsung uses the same Gorilla glass everyone else uses, and they all use similar oleophobic coatings.. It's no more susceptible to scratches than any other phone.

I've had my Note 4 for a year and a half, not a single scratch, hairline or other. Day 3 with my S7edge, I have several fine scratches. I don't know if it's the curved glass, but this screen is definitely not durable.

My previous S6 Edge+ got a hairline scratch on the display almost right away. It was only visible when the screen was clean.
That's the reason I put a protector on my S7 Edge the second I pulled it out of the box.
The SAMOLED displays definitely scratch easily, or at least the coating does.

If you're anything like myself, then you've discovered a long time ago, that although unsightly, screen protectors do exactly what they are supposed to do.
Enter Google Pixel: A beautiful screen that's just begging for protection so that it may remain as such for years to come... But there's a major problem. The screen is curved!
After failures from tempered glass and a few different brands of film protectors, I ordered the iCarez film protectors. The technique they recommend works really well. Nailed it on the first try, no bubbles or fuzzies!
After a few minutes, I noticed the right side peeling up. Pressed and rubbed and did everything I could would not stick. Tried again with a fresh film. Same thing, although this is the closest I've gotten to perfection so far.
Here's where the disclaimer comes in.
I grab the iron and set it to "synthetic". I let it heat up for a minute and check the temperature with my infrared thermometer. It's at about *220 f. I place the phone on the cloth and fold cloth over screen. Just one layer. Lightly spray the cloth with water so it's just a little damp. Then I grab the iron and with slow, firm movements, press the edge of the screen where the bubbles are, making sure to not leave it in one place for too long.
I pull back the towel and wipe away the moisture on the screen to reveal it's working! I have 90% of the halo gone!
The last bit just wouldn't go down. So I turned the iron up to about *270 f and repeated the same motion. Boom! Flat, no bubbles or halo.
If you try this, please be careful. I'm sure exposure to high temperatures is only OK for very short periods of time.
**I will reiterate that this should be done at your own risk.**
DON'T BE A DUMMY. DO NOT PLACE A HOT IRON DIRECTLY ON YOUR PHONE.

I never run a screen protector. Honestly by the time I was ready to switch phones I had one or two tiny scratches on the screen. My wife always runs a screen protector and while I am sure she is just using cheap screen protectors her screen always looks like shiz. Oh the reason I dont use screen protectors is because glass apparently keeps getting better and better so where is the need.
I also don't put things in my pocket with my phone and I tend tp put the glass side in towards my skin.
Just some perspective from a guy that doesn’t use screen protectors or cases. By all means your money is not mine and spend it how you will, this is just some insight.
I ordered the iCarez [HD Clear] Screen Protector for Google Pixel XL. I have had it on for 6 days and have had No issues at all. Very nice film screen protector. For years I have used, http://www.clarivue.com/browse-by-brand-screen-protector.html. Very solid ultra clear protector.

I see where you're coming from. I treated this phone like a sleeping baby on a land mine for the first few days waiting for a case and screen protector to come in the mail. Even then I still got a few small superficial scratches on the screen and a pretty noticeable one the softer back glass. A properly installed screen protector is barely noticeable and I change it out every few months when it gets scratched up. Small price to pay for the added protection.
It boils down to preference. At any rate, if you do like them, it's hard to install one on this phone. This is a way to get it to fit better. It's been a few days now and it's holding strong. I'm pleased.
I've noticed after my screen protectors get crappy and I haven't had them on my phone for a while, my screen never really gets scratched up. Therefore, I don't really use screen protectors anymore.
The only thing that ever scratched my screen was a titanium keychain accessory on my keyring. Regular keys never scratched my screen, but the titanium sure did. Luckily it was on a horrible temp phone I was using until my pixel arrived
I quit using protectors. Don't like the way they feel. And they have come a long way in scratch proof glass
Bought a tempered glass one about 2 weeks after getting the phone. And I got it about a day or 2 after its initial release.
Havent had any issues with it at all. Can't remember the brand, I just know it's a full protector, covers the entire front of the phone.
I bought the Supershieldz tempered glass 2 pack off Amazon as I have had success in the past with their screen protectors. It covers JUST the usable portion of the screen, not the entire front, and it works just fine. Zero bubbles and no "halo".
I've just got the orzly pro protector, covers the entire front as well with perfect cutouts
Easy to install, just hinge it and flap it on lol

First time posting in a while, so forgive me if I'm a bit rusty. I just got my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ yesterday, and my amFilm Ultra Glass Screen Protector today, so I thought I'd write up a little review. Sorry for no pics, but I was busy installing and trying to keep things dust-free
I've used Whitestone in the past but was disappointed with both my Note 8 and 9 installs, primarily because of the LOCA spiderwebbing on the edges. I figured I'd give another brand a shot, so I went searching here and found the amFilm Ultra Glass Screen Protector. A quick trip over to Amazon, and $40 later (for a full kit including *2* protectors) and here we are!
PACKAGING: The box is nice - wider and flatter than the WS product. It's clean and simple, but professional looking. Plus their website and install video are well done also. Inside the outer box are three smaller boxes. The largest contains the plastic frame, screen protectors, and wipes (I think). The medium size box contains the UV light and the MicroUSB cable. It appears to be identical to the WS product, but I don't know this for a fact, so take that for what it's worth. The smallest box contains the LOCA (2 tubes), extra absorption pads, plastic pin, tabs to place over the speaker, a bubble level, and a weight. Everything you need comes in this kit, including plenty of wet and dry wipes, microfiber cloths, and dust removal stickers. On the packaging is a QR code to go to the install video.
PRODUCT: Everything seems to be on the same quality scale as the WS product, with a few minor changes - 1) there is no LOCA applicator "bridge", you have to aim and dribble the solution by hand, 2) the pin is different - there's no more tilting the entire phone to move the liquid into position - the pin is angled and sets the glass down at an angle, and 3) the "fingerprint" weight (more on this later). Otherwise, if you've done the WS before, this isn't significantly different.
INSTALLATION: **REMINDER** REMOVE the factory plastic screen protector and clean your screen THOROUGHLY before proceeding! I ALMOST forgot, which would have been a disaster! I watched the video twice and didn't see any mention of this, so amFilm, here's a tip for you. Anyway, installation is straightforward -put the little feet on the bottom of the phone to bring it flush with the pins inside, make sure the screen is 100% clean, install the sticker over the speaker, apply the liquid (making sure to absorb any "splatter" before proceeding!), peel the protective film off the glass, place it, and pull the pin. Once the liquid starts to spread, put the weight where the fingerprint sensor is and let it settle and "ooze" for 3-ish minutes. (NOTE - it's hard to locate the fingerprint scanner, so you might want to mark the frame in advance with a Sharpie (another tip for amFilm - marking that plastic with some kind of raised bumps or hash marks might be a good idea, or maybe a film for on top of the glass that marks where to place it - just a thought). After that, it's bake-time under the UV light, then you're done.
RESULTS: I'm very impressed so far. The glass appears to be nice and clear, and I can't even see the little "spots" in the corners others mentioned. I lucked out this time and no dust specs at all. No bubbles, etc. the fingerprint scanner appears to be working fine, although I haven't re-registered anything. It DOES require a little extra "umph" to scan, but that's not a big deal. Part of that could be me getting used to an in-screen scanner. There was minimal over-oozing, and the pre-installed pads absorbed everything fine. Barely needed a wipedown afterward.
FITMENT: There appears to be no flaws in placement using the guide, or in the fitment of the glass. It sits flat, and lines up exactly where it should. The cutout for the front-facing camera is exactly where it should be, and it's not overly-exaggerated in size. The edges leave plenty of room for putting the phone in a case (I've tried 4 so far, all fit without touching the glass edge, so there's no worry about case push on the glue). The bottom edge is just a tad bit short, maybe a 1/16", but that could be allowing for larger cases (I don't use the big bulky ones, so IDK).
OVERALL ASSESSMENT: 4.5/5 Stars - Great product, especially for the price. I'll keep you posted on long-term wear & quality, but for now, I'd say it's a great deal versus the competition.
Great review. I just installed mine yesterday and I've had exactly the same great experience with the product. It really does work well with the fp scanner. I had a terrible time with the S10 plus fp scanner and the Whitestone. Great price as well. I'll buy again for sure.

I just picked up a set of the amfilm install went flawless a lot easier than the whitestone I had on my S8 fingerprint worked right of the bat with what I had already registered I think it even sensed it better than the stock protector that came with the phone, well spent $40 bucks on amazon
Forgot to mention it fits perfect with my otterbox case

Not sure about the Clearview cover, I haven't ordered it yet.
As for removal, it uses LOCA glue to adhere the screen protector to the phone, so it's not the easiest thing to remove, but will come off with a little effort. You will want to have lots of alcohol wipes handy to clean the screen afterwards. Maybe a few Band-Aids, too
AMfilm doesn't seem to gather dust at the edges like it did with the Whitestone install on my Galaxy Note 9. That's a blessing! I was always cleaning clingy dust away on a daily basis. The edges on this install are clean!

Hey Ray, do you know why? is it because of different density loca glue? I really want to switch to glass protector but hesitant because of dust built up around the edges.

yep. works with every case i got so far. Might have issue with the ones with a front plastic piece though like on some heavy duty cases.
not sure about removal, but ive not had issue with any loca based one so far in the years ive used them.

It must be a difference in the glue, I don't know what else accounts for it. I had really fuzzy edges all the time with WS.
How hard is it if you want to remove the screen protector pls?

I applied this to my S20+ yesterday. The steps were clear on paper, but the video was more helpful still.
Everything went fine with the exception that when I opened the adhesive tube it sprayed out a bit even before the top cap was opened, and I suspect this is due to me living at a high altitude. As a result my glue didn't fully spread to the whole screen, but close, and there were many small bubbles in the center of the screen. Next time I might try opening and closing the top first to equilibrate pressure.
That said, this is a promising product. It has a smooth and even finish, remains low profile so my case fits which still wraps the lateral edges, and the fingerprint part works a bit better than with the cheap plastic screen protector that samsung supplied (which also scratched easily).
I've never used screen protectors on prior phones, but this product is nice enough that I'll use it on future phones as well.
Additionally, the customer service was outstanding and they immediately sent me a replacement protector and more adhesive to try again.
Thumbs up so far, I'm confident my next application will be successful.

Sorry, haven't been on XDA much. I've had my amfilm since Dec, 2019 and it's still like new. Oleophobic coating has not wear off.
