[Q] Task Killer vs No-Task Killer

Hi Guys!
I've seen soo many post: "Use a Task Killer for better battery life!"
But I've probably seen that much post: "DON'T use a Task Killer... The continuous killing of tasks drains the battery! Android manages the Tasks internal..."
So now I'm confused
Should you use a Task Killer or shouldn't you?
I haven't used a task killer in ages. With the latter kernels and builds they are pretty irrelevant I feel. There is better memory management and CPU usage with the latest kernels to make task-killers all but obsolete.
You don't have to use them anymore. If you want to have more free RAM you could use Auto Killer (free in the market). There you can set the presets to Optimum. But I have to say that my data drops have reduced since I don't use it anymore.
It's a little off topic but what I wanted to ask you, do you have lots of drops in the Swisscom network? Because I think those drops only happen if you have a bad network connectivity. Btw. I'm working for Sunrise

agreed i only see the use for a task killer if it gets stuck on exit of the program or task
Ok... It seems I won't need a task killer... But I'm using now AutoKiller with preset to Optimum

About the drops... I'm using this build (PPP) now for about one day^^ - But until now it's working like a charm (mobilespeedtest.com gives me a bandwith of ~2000kbps - 2Mb file tested)
In previous builds (RMNet) it worked quite good too, but sometimes it wasn't really fast... But I haven't had a full data-drop (You would need to reboot to solve it don't you?)
EDGE-Data doesn't work at all... (But E-Data Logo is in notification-bar). Probably an APN-Setting is missing or I don't know. I don't really miss it in daily use. Just in trains it's sometimes annoying...
What happens to programs that you "close" is that they are put in the RAM and saved for later use to switch quickly to them. However, most programs don't use the CPU (therefore don't really waste much battery life). Therefore, actually closing and opening the app wastes MORE battery life than just leaving it "open". The only time you really need a task killeris if you start running out of RAM (which is HARD on the HD2).
theres a game named pocket legends , theres no exit button(as most of the android apps) , if i put it in the bg with home button , my phone will stutter all over , even contacts list is laggy becuz of high cpu usage ... what would u guys do who have no taskiller in a situation like that ??

This is kinda true, but I was more talking about Automatic Task killer.
I use SystemPanel Lite as my Taskmanager and System control

If a program doesn't have an exit button, use the back button, as this will normally close the application or game instead of pressing home, as this leaves the app open.

Same for me, I'm using PPP now for about 1 month (mattc 1.8, a little older but this build is it really worth, soooo smooth). And you are right, here in Swiss the connection is always very good (except you live somewhere in the "pampa" )
If you have a drop, just go to airplane mode and back, that always solved for me. EDGE does work for me, but it is veeeeery slow.. kinda annoying. And as you said, this only happens in trains.
It's really pretty simple I think.
(Have a task killer ATK free for me).
Set it to ignore almost everything.
Don't have it auto kill
Still don't have it auto kill
Open it when you need it to kill buggy, stuck apps.
Is there anything you can argue with about this approach? It seems that people are arguing past each other because one side says "don't have a task killer" and the other side says "how can I kill problem apps then?". These aren't mutually exclusive.

Never used task killer, only AutoMemory Killer to optimize Froyo memory management. coming from computer we thing that "more free ram you have, more fast it will be", this is not true on Android.
It works in the same speed if you have 200mb free ram or if you have 5mb free.
When it reaches some values, the system automatically freeup ram closing not more necessary tasks.
You can change those value when the system act, using Auto Memory Killer

I'd close it manually, Settings > Applications > Manage Applications then force stop it. Sounds to me like that's one buggy piece of software tho. If it's in the background it shouldn't use CPU time, only a bit of ram to suspend it.

Is there any way to improve ram management on miui v7?

So yeah, I've been using nexus 5 prior I got this phone. It had 2 gigs of ram too. When I was getting RN2 I thought I won't face any ram related problems, but I was wrong. It feels like I have 1 gig of ram judging on phone's ability to keep apps in memory. Chrome is capable of keeping only 1 tab in memory, and not for a long time. I'm sick of seeing everything being reloaded every time I go back to it. Any thoughts on this?
PS
No need to tell me about 'lock' feature in recents, it's just useless.
I set up my own battery profile using the security app. Security - Battery - Battery Profiles. In here I changed the Clean Memory to never.
Sent from my Redmi Note 2 using Tapatalk
I use the default profile, and it already has 'never' option picked. And as far as I can judge, this features is meant to be an automatic task killer sorta. The device's problem is in poor ram management, 2 gigs of ram is simply not enough for it, which is kinda 'wtf', considering my nexus experience.
Try freeze build in apps, root first, then use titanium backup or link2sd
If you're using MIUI, there's nothing you can do to lower RAM used by the system and get more RAM available for your apps. I personally clear my apps before use, but the apps I got start fast and are mainly utilities. The only app I lock is School Assistant because it warns me of my classes and exams at University.

Hi.
Im on Xiaomi.eu 5.10.16 with Google Now launcher. No problem having a lot of tabs open in Chrome.
Its smooth and stable. No ram issues. No better or worse than my Nexus 5.
My experience is that using task killers etc only making things worse. We better leave ram management to the os alone
Thanks
Knievel.
Well, I don't use any task killer or something. I just experience ram shortage symptoms.
Kinda late, but eh...
It's not really RAM shortage, but MIUI's asinine memory "optimization". It basically kicks any apps (even active ones!) from RAM after a while. I've been foaming at the mouth blaming my media player for simply disappearing mid-song randomly without any error messages, when I stumbled over the "memory optimization" setting in developer options. Looking around on the net brought me here. Disabled that sucker, rebooted, no disappearing apps anymore. The phone feels as smooth as it did before, so the usual low memory killer settings work. Tweaked them a bit using kernel adiutor and I'm more than happy. You could also try this in addition, but I wasn't able to get it to run smoothly - apparently an exception. Idle RAM usage fell significantly, though.

You're talking about 1 or 2 ?
One, memory optimization. Disabling two, MIUI optimization, is a bit overkill, since it also removes the recent tasks management.

But why would you want to use them instead of the built-in one? If you disable MIUI optimizations, you might as well use an un-mutilated AOSP/CM ROM.

I based my statement on what DarthJabba9 said in the Skinny Pro thread:

Disable "Turn on MIUI optimization" in the developer options (if you have enabled developer options). After this, you will have to close down recent apps manually (I use "RecentTask" from the Play Store).

In any case, to get rid off the symptoms @sxeMonster was having, it's enough to disable "Memory optimization" in the developer options.

I can confirm the clean memory setting is a major reason for poor battery life,
I've set it to never and my battery life is much better.

That's correct, no need to disable MIUI optimisation.
Memory optimisation option is basically Zram,
I've got it disabled, too.
Haven't had any ram issues and it can still keep a dozen or so apps on the background before android starts killing them.

Non sequitur. MIUI optimizations are not the only (or even the main) difference between MIUI ROMS and AOSP/CM ROMs.
Sequitur or non sequitur, you haven't answered my question - why would I want to disable MIUI optimization instead of only memory optimization?

Your question was "But why would you want to use them instead of the built-in one?" The answer is "This is a very small price to pay for removing MIUI optimization". Disabling memory optimisation may do the deal for you - but it did not solve all my problems.
I will refer you to the following which is in response to issues that have been raised here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-2/development/b-skinny-pro-t3347906/page9#post66369078
I disabled a few things given by @jajk , I think the most important one for multi tasking is the battery saver, it closes apps and restricts backgroud activity.
Not only that but too much crap is held in memory by miui.
Get disable service and disable:
InCallUI - CallRecordingRemoteService
Security - SecurityCenterAnalyticsService + SecurityCenterService + PowerSaveService --- it still works just not held in memory
Settings - MiuiWifiService + ObserverService ---- Wifi still works
GooglePlayServices - I disabled a few things I don't need and everything works for me except Gmail account sms verification, I had to put in the code manually.
Default SMS app stays in memory for some reason, I disabled it and using google messenger, just gotta disable wearable service
If disabled it breaks SMS, just disable SmsReportService, SMS works that way. Also in settings disable auto download MMS.
I'm getting 600-700 free ram and apps stay in cache much longer. Outside of settings it reaches 800 Free memory + all apps still in cache

I would prefer better memory management than High Free Memory, because Linux is good already with Memory Management.

Xperia Z3+ Nougat Review.....

:fingers-crossed::laugh:
YouTube Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjR2PxJmcsk
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THIS ANDROID 7 ON Z3+.
Advantages..
1. Battery is lasting more than MM.
2. Stamina mode comes with 3 level stamina features.
3. Split Screen Apps are awesome.
4. Heating is less, I think they avhieved that by closing the background apps.
5.Camera app doesnt heatup the phone and lasts open till 5 min( I checked for 5 minutes only may be it ll show heating warning after that, I just dont know about it).
6. Now both the wallpaper and lockscreen can be handled easily with the same option WALLPAPER provided at SETTING app.
Disadvantages.
1. The Icons for the apps CONTACTS, MESSAGING, PHONE, CAMERA are so ugly.
2. One cannot go to the homepage by clicking recent navbar and then by clicking at the clear space of the recent apps menu.
3. While phone is locked the phone doesnt react to double tap unlock like it used to be in MM.
4. While the phone is locked the Icons of battery, network, clock etc are placed slightly lower than the Icons placed in the unlocked screen. LOCKING UNLOCKING CREATES AN UGLY LOOK OF MISPLACEMENT OF THESE ICONS.
5. The Battery icon in the status bar is too weird. ( Doesnt like it look).
6. The Data traffic indicator ( the small arrows up and down are way too small, the indicator which shows below 2g, 3g, H+ and LTE on the status bar)
7. They removed the option of selecting the FOCUS MODE in the camera app.
8. I compared the pictures taken by my phone when its in LP, MM AND N, I must say in LP this phone used to capture photos brilliantly, in MM the pics are somewhat lower than LP. But in N the pics quality are not upto marks. I think thats all because of this focus thing. Now the phone focus the way it wants to).
9. Remove/ Quit apps wisely, I am downloading some apps from UC BROWSER and then I exit the app and keep the downloading in the background but when I cleared the app from the recent apps list just to make my recent app section to look empty, it stopped my downloading too and the APP UC BROWSER was completely shut. (This option is in LP TOO BUT NOT IN MM) So close apps wisely.
11. They abandoned the small apps, Yes they are there but not easily accessible, now accessing small apps are quit pain in the ASS.
12. The apps in the Recent apps looks very big.
13. New quick tiles are good but one cannot direct shut data from there.
Thats all dear Fellas, I like the UI OF MM more than this N.
I THINK SONY JUST BAKED THIS N FOR US IN HURRY.
If I missed anything than please guys you can add that on your comments.
I really think the Android N update is very good for this device. Camera quality has improved in N - try some low light shots - noise is much lower. The UI is very fluid.
For my device not update notice for now...but I see that in Russia update is out in these days...
So, for now I can't comment about N on my Z3+...but thank you very much for this thread...I hope more users tell opinions about this new update...
I would like to learn more about:
- camera is more fast or not, compared to MM? About picture quality seems the two different opinions are contrary..so, other user opinion about camera?
- N as it looks in terms of reactivity on our device?
- Audio? From speakers and in headset? There are some new optimizations or similar?
Thanks in advance to all

Hope that removed for the reasons you've mentioned :fingers-crossed:
Using Nougat Indian Firmware
Advantages-
1. Camera quality is better
2. Split screen
3. Smooth Ui
4. Performance Enhancment
5. Battery backup improved
6. Brightness dim Issue in sunlight is fixed upto great extent
7. Heating issue is much more solved
Disadvantages ( Huge list but Listing major one)
1. Touch issue (Lackness in touch sensitivity)
2. No manual Focus in Camera Menu
3. Sound Quality reduced (Vibrations in back panel)
4. Can't download apps frome playstore in Roaming.
5. Now we have to double tap to activate data from notification bar
So, its better to push updates for fixing these problems. I hope sony would release updates.
Number 4 and 5 from @ag_themes list are customisation dependent. Both are not present in Russian Nougat that also was on servers before withdrawal.
Also I don't have any touch issues. The sound problems mentioned are the main reason of update withdrawal.
Btw. No overheating is probably connected with reduced usage of a57 cores. Nougat uses them rarely comparing to marshmallow (some report says they are disabled in nougat).
Can someone upload Russian fw? I want to flash it
Using Android Nougat on India Version
Split Screen is advantage (but not many app support however you can force them to)
Slightly more responsive ( like 5 percent)
camera is same (with an added option in manual mode)
audio is also similar
i feel battery consumption when device is used is same ( maybe doze helps when phone is in sleep but i didnt notice much improvement)
My device hanged once (in youtube app). Restarted itself after 5 mins.
Indirect access to small apps ( i never really used them)
{
Other things such as detailed (two taps to toggle) mobile data , wifi and bluetooth. Displays important things on settings , NOtification quick reply these are android N features sony didnt mess with
}
I feel its an simple upgrade of API . Everything else is similar to MM.

Nope, not true. With out bootloader unlock, it is impossible to root the device.
IOVYROOT will get temp root access to backup the TA Partition, but after reboot, the device loses the root access. It is only for taking backup, you can not modify the system. If you try to modify the system with temp root access, your device will be dead after reboot.

You can try by disabling MIUI optimisation from developer options.
I did and looks like most of my apps are staying in the memory until I close them (but not games, I am talking of google maps, Facebook, browser, etc.).

Try to disable option "Use Adaptive Battery" under Battery & performance.
I have a K20 Pro with Global ROM for MI9T Pro. Superb multitasking with "Use Adaptive Battery" On and also MIUI optimization is On. Just the apps that I want to stay in memory are set to "No restrictions". In multitasking also the apps that I need are with lock.

Inconsistent - does not have scrollbar in some parts of the settings where it is needed while some parts have a row of alphabets at the LHS, while some don't.
Phone seems to "forget" power profile and permission settings.

you cant. wait for twrp and flash roms
Color os is really not that bad my x2 just arrived last night and it's the Chinese version and all i had to do is to uninstall all those apps + adb tutorial for the grayed out apps and i was set to go, there was nothing wrong with it at all + i did the latest update and all is good
The only downside so far is that you can't hide the notch in system apps like ... Youtube or Chrome. Gaming mode is better than on MIUI 10, no permanent white line on the left screen, so no burn-in risk in gaming mode.

#1. Have you tried App Management / (choose the app) / Auto Startup ?
You are only allowed to have 5 apps that auto-startup but I picked the 5 most important one for me.
#2. Have you tried App Management / (choose the app) / Power Saver / Allow Background Running ?
