[Q] Looking at buying a moto G7 but confused over specs - Need advice - Moto G7 Questions & Answers

Ok bit of background
Looking for a new mobile since my existing P10 Lite doesn't seem to be getter Pie (or any further) update anymore (whether it's due to the USA/China security risk debate or not - don't know), so been looking around & the Moto G7 'seems' to be one of the possible choices - 'near' vanilla Android experience & very little bloatware - or so I've read.
FYI: My 'budget' is up to £300 btw & phone is going to have to be unlocked/SIM-free, Also I'm on a true PAYG contract meaning I DON'T have any 'free' DATA plan meaning I have to rely on Free Wifi Hotspots or pay through the nose to use Mobile Data
Now as many know there are 4 (or is it 5 ?) versions of this models & since the price difference between a 'Power' and a 'Plus' iswithin mu budget; I'm looking at these mainly
Here's my problem/questions
1) According to another site (Am I allowed to say it's 'gsmarena' ?) there are actually 2 versions of the 'Power' - A 'USA' and a 'Europen' version, with the USA version having a built in compass while the European doesn't.
Since I use SatNav on mobile occassionally I was always under the assumption that for a SatNav to know what direction you are facing & be able to rotate the map on screen you NEED a built in compass (or magnetometer as I believe is the proper term for it)
- however googling to see if this is true seems to show conflicting results (some say you do, some say that A-GPRS can work it out without the need for a compass)
So:-
Q1) - DOES the UK version of the Power actually have a built-in compass ?
Q2) - IS a built-in compass actually needed to allow SatNav maps to rotate ?
If the UK version DOESN'T come with a compass & one is needed to allow Satnav's to know your direction & rotate maps while driving etc then I'm considering getting the 'Plus' instead (I'm ignoring the 'G7' because it seems the European version ALSO doesn't come with a compass & is basically the 'Power' with smaller battery but better Screen)
IF a compass is NOT necessary for Satnav then I'll probably go for the 'Power' mainly because of longer battery life - which isn't essential but useful (& it's cheaper ) although with the 'Plus' I would be getting better screen/camera/CPU power which (in theory) give it a slightly better 'Future-proof' potential.
Battery life isn't that much of a concern really since my existing Phone battery is also 3000mAh (same as 'Plus') & as a light user it manages me through a day so (I get to about 25-30% on a 'bad' day), so....
Q3) IF a compass is NOT essential for SatNav map rotation etc - What would YOU choose ?
- buy the 'Power' for lower spec Camera/Screen but longer battery life OR the 'Plus' for better all round specs/ better 'Future-proof' ??
Thanks for any advice in advance

Get the G7 or G7 Plus. You can always get a battery case, powerbank, etc.. You CANT upgrade or expand the ram/internal storage at a latter date. 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM on the G7 vs. 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM on the G7 Power. I understand its cheaper, but you'll thank yourself later when you phone is faster than the G7 Power a year from now. Plus the G7 and G7 Plus are the flagship of this model, so third party ROM support such as Lineage are going to be the device that devs build on. G7 Power is going to be the device that devs port ROMs to. I am a cheap ass man when it comes to spending them coins, but there is a fine line of being smart or stupid about making a cheap ass decision. Be smart and get the G7 unless the battery life vastly outweighs the trade offs for your use/application.

thanks for the feedback but I'm now more confused
according to 'that' website I mentioned BOTH the Power and Plus have 64Gb storage and 4Gb ram regardless of being USA or European models
I've also checked specs with a couple of UK stores & they also state 4/64 (eg tesco/carphonewarehouse) yet further searching (mainly on review sites) and some state the 3/32 you mention (eg 'which. co. uk' says 4/64 but 'pcmag' says 3/32)
Beginning to look like the Plus may be becoming the winner here now that I have no way of knowing what the Power ACTUAL real specs are
Also - any ideas about the compass/satnav dilemma... just in case a different phone pops up that matches the g7 for similar specs

In an earlier response, it was incorrectly stated that both the g7 power and g7/g7+ storage can only handle 64GB. The G7/G7+ come with 64GB internal storage and supports an extra 64GB SD, so you can actually get 128GB total for the g7/G7+. The G7 power comes with 32GB internal storage, but is expandable up to 512GB - a major difference between the two models.

Get the G7 with 64 Gb or you'll be sorry later.
In addition you can add even more storage with an inexpensive SD next to the Sim slot.
In case it matters to you, none of the Moto G7s have an led.

Didnt know about no led... I assume you mean one on front that flashes when missed call etc... that may be a problem as I work in noisy enviroment..
Does camera led flash for missed calls / msg ? or does it beep repeatively until notufication is read?
EDIT forget last bit... forgot about 'moto display always on' notification
Still no-one know about whether compass is required for satnav map rotation or not??

I just checked online and you're right! According to the Motorola website the G7/G7+ is in fact expandable up to 512gb! I had previously read specs from 2 other sites that both listed the G7/G7+ max SD card support at 64gb. Sweet!

Hmm - still trying to decide on new phone & discovered the 'Moto one Vision'
Same price as Moto g7 Plus (£269) however according to that comparison site I mentioned in OP (plus some reviews I've read), it seems better specs in some place (& worse in others)
+ Slightly bigger screen (6.3" to 6.2"
+ More internal memort (128gb compared to 64gb)
+ Better Camera (48MP to 16MP)
+ bigger battery (3500maH to 3000Mah)
+ Android One (meaning more updates - 'Vanilla' Android - less Bloat ??)
- Faster processor (2.2Ghz compared to 1.8Ghz) although is processor any better (Exynos 9609 to a Qualcomm SDM636 Snapdragon 636 ??)
- Plastic frame (Plus has Aluminium frame)
- Gorilla glass (unspecified) compared to Class 3 on Plus
- Unusual Resolution ratio 1080x2520 (21:9) compared to 1080x2270 (19:9)
- Camera Focusing 'seems' top be slow
So......
Between the G7 Plus & the Moto One - which would you choose ??

Would you leave LG for the S6?

I was very impressed with what Samsung had to offer. The phone looks gorgeous, the camera performs absolutely incredible in low light (based on their own comparison with the 6+), and they've finally sped up TouchWiz!
Other things I was really impressed with were
1) Exynos 7420 - First 14nm FinFET processor should offer better battery life and performance - Initial Antutu scores were over 69,000!
2) Real-time HDR on both front and back cameras
3) Wireless charging that supports both standards
4) Faster DDR4 memory
5) Faster storage memory (up to 2.7x faster than the current standard)
6) Samsung Pay and the support for MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) which will allow it to be backwards compatible with nearly all merchants and terminals
I'm sure I'm probably missing a few key points, but has the S6 made you want to switch?

Hummm... Touchwiz might be faster now, but it still is touchwiz. The price for a new S6 is just to high.
If i remove money from the equation... i would wait for the LG G4!
is there any news of the lg g4? i would like to see if it's gonna be a monster too

I've read a few days ago that LG and Apple signed a deal with Samsung for those DDR4 RAM components. I'd also bet that LG will go with the faster nand (knowing that they like to keep up with Samsung). The S6 really looks snappy, but i'm not convinced it's the touchwiz/Exynos optimizations, i'd say it's because of better I/O with both the faster nand and DDR4 RAM. What i mean to say, you can bet that the LG G4, if LG decides to use the same components, might also be that snappy.
The camera is another story. The camera app launch speed, quick shutter speed, tracking autofocus, low light performance with that f1.9 lens.. it looks promising.
On the other hand, despite that newer AMOLED displays look really good (note 4 and now the S6) , but i still prefer LCD. I don't like the idea of possible burn-in issues (something i faced with my galaxy nexus back in the day).
Also, with Samsung Knox, and Exynos SoC's, i'm not sure how much development from the xda community will it get, it will always have "debloated" versions of the stock ROM, but everything other than that will be buggy.
I'd say wait a bit, more phones with similar specs and technologies (and possibly lower price tag) will emerge (Chinese and non Chinese).
Screen is too small for my taste, but the Note 5 might be a good shout if the rumors of Touchwiz not being dog slow prove true.
The LG G4 will be anounced in the next couple of months - I'll wait to see what the spec of that phone is before deciding.
I just moved from my beloved but ridiculously buggy-slow g3 to a Note 4. I miss the back controls...but other than that, not much else. I've had so many lagging/rebooting android devices now and the Note just doesn't. It'll take a lot to make me go back to LG or HTC in the near future.
NO SD Card for me it is deal bracker
Faster memory/storage is a treath, faster CPU - i never feal lack of performance?
Smaler body is also nice (one handed operation with G3 while riding my bike is Chalenging )
Small batery - we need to see how long it'll last?
at the end i am not changing (not to S6) for now
no sd card and no removable battery either... a big no no...
No sd card slot, non removable battery, 800€ for the 64gb version. Oh hell no.
QHD with ultra powerful processor, without removable battery..? i fear the battery life would take a hit
and the lack of microSD slot...
and Exynos...
yep, too many dealbreakers. won't consider as an option unless G4 is overall a worse package.
Nope, I personally hate the idea of a screen degrading to the point it basically damages itself (burn in)
Until AMOLED technology has advanced far enough that it no longer suffers from such issues, I'll stick with IPS displays.
On top of that, I'm not sure I'm sold on any phone with 2 panes of glass. Sure if must feel awesome in hand, but just the thought of it being so delicate at such a high price..no thanks.
Short answer: No, I'll stick with my G3. I could care less if the S6 camera is better
No removable battery or SD card, WTF, major, mistake , batteries really need replacing after a year, Doh

Yep one possibility to secure future customers for the S7
I'm leaning more toward the HTC One M9. From the demos so far, the S6 still has a laggier interface. Not as bad as in the past, but still a bit more of a delay.
I quickly scanned the thread and failed to notice anyone say anything about the bootloader, WHICH WILL BE LOCKED
I have g3 too, but my microsd slot is empty and I never moved battery

And exynos processor. Soooo not many custom roms like cm12 etc.
It's amoled, so no, thanks.
I might leave the LG G3 ...... for the LG G4!
Though I might would be tempted by a note 5 (if there was such a thing) if it had an even bigger screen, because I really love phablets. But let's be honest, the price would likely be $800+ so once again the LG would likely win with whatever offering they had based on that fact. Also, the SD card slot is a huge sell point for me on anything.

I'm thinking about buying this phone, but not immediately. In a month or so, I think, when I have money
Plus waiting a month or two makes sense considering there's talk that they'll remove the invite system by then.
Other than that, very excited for this device. Looks absolutely beautiful. Sure, its similar to the Xperia design, but that doesn't make it bad. In fact, I love the design all the more for it.
The SD801 is a fine choice I think. It still performs very well. And I wasn't really expecting the 808 or 805 for this price anyway. NFC isn't essential at all, imho, here in India. Rest of the specs look good too. And the 5' display is plenty big for my small hands.
And the main point to be considered - the development scene. Both the OPO and the OPT have good dev backing, and I'm hoping this device will as well. I'll be keeping an eye on the forums to stay updated about the development, the coming month or so should give a better idea in that respect.
But even so, I'll say I'm pretty locked about this phone, its ticking all the right boxes for me.
Hope I get this baby soon :fingers-crossed:
So I was fixated on buying the Moto X Style until yesterday ... (OnePlus 2 has that frying hot 810, so had to eliminate it).
But then seeing the OnePlus X , I'm almost inclined toward buying this over Moto X Style ...
The major reason being :
1.Manageable size (5 inch is just perfect)
2.Micro Sd card slot
3.AMOLED display
4.Very Very Cheap !!!
The major disadvantage that I see here, over the Moto X Style is that
1. It doesn't have service centers as good as Motorola
2. The compromise that users are forced to make, either choose 2 sims or 1 sim + Sd-card .
3. Lack of storage options (Only 16 gigs).

Right, I'm a little worried about their after sales service as well. Do you happen to know if they have any service centers around NCR?
Other than that, I personally use just one sim, so I don't mind that much. And 16gb storage is ok too, since I can just use a micro-sd card along with the one sim I have. But I agree, that is kind of a workaround and I can see 16gb being very less for people much more media-centric than me. They should have provided more storage options.

It's not about being media centric any more .... The thing is now the google apps have become much bigger and are producing large amount of Cache data for analytics and making our user experience faster .
Even on lollipop on my moto g (AOSP based rom), the cache data generated in one month was around 1 GB with bare minimal apps.
Plus the Moto X Pure is getting just 8 GB usable memory in 16 gigs version !!! 8 gigs is too less according to me,even if you want to use atleast 40% features/apps of a smart phone (email, photo's and stuff) .
But Marshmallow is introducing new Memory feature, which enable users to club the internal memory and the Sd-Card , but then the speed of Sd-Card can never match the speed of internal memory,so there will be a slight delay in opening apps ....
Storage is always a subjective feature, but then again it's good to be a bit future proof than living on edge ... That being said I don't think there will be any major disadvantage ... thanks to new Marshmallow Memory management option !
hell yeah!!!i am getting this device!finally a 5" phone!i will cry now...but are you sure only 16gb internal model?:/
EDITh,only 16 gig version :/..okay,btw that glass at the back is also a gorilla glass?or just a simple glass?

hi!
can anyone suggest which one is a better buy, one plus x or mi4? considering after sales services of both and the fact that mi4 is going to be sold at a reduced price on 3-5 nov. (both of them are way similar in specs except amoled display and sd card support in the X).
thanx in advance!

mi4 is an incredible device but the problem is the software..it is still running on 4.4 and that too is buggy(miui has lots of bugs) and i have no idea and nor i think, you will ever get a STABLE marshmallow(though there is official cm12.1 right now).

considering the kernel source of mi4 has been released there's been an incredible developers team supporting it! even my galaxy grand duos has a marshmallow build(with some bugs, only single sim working), so there is a very high probability tht mi4 WILL get marshmallow and i'm planning to install cm12.1 on day 1.
my main concern is the after sales services, or lack thereof, of one plus!

Pretty darn solid device. Never heats up. There was a software update right out of the box. Camera is better than expected. Will try some outdoor photos in daylight tomorrow. The cover/case provided is not cheap.. but soft.. and should provide ample protection. Speaker sound is good. Overall, a brilliant phone.

I believe LTE is not the sim card "slot" dependent, but on the phone's hardware. As they've been advertising it as an LTE phone, it should support it on both SIMs.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro Review + Benchmarks, Unboxing & Camera samples (Video)

Mod edit: Link removedXiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro Review Video on YouTube.
Just recently got my hands on the Redmi Note 3 Pro. I reviewed the Redmi Note 3 with 3GB of RAM. A great phone but it lacks a MicroSD card slot, so it had a rather major flaw. Now the Redmi Note 3 Pro is out to fix this with MicroSD support in the dual SIM slot (Either micro sim + MicroSD or 2 x micro sims). And it now has a new camera sensor ( s5l3p3 Samsung ISOCELL 16MP) and a new chipset the Snapdragon 650. Overall this is an impressive phone for the price. Metal build, great screen. Very fast (78k in AnTuTu 6) The internal storage is also very quick for a phone at 150mb/s read and 50 mb/s writes. Can't really fault it only that the camera is very poor at low light still. And it has no NFC support.

Pros:
Great build with a metal body
The Snapdragon 650 sets new standards in power for the price
1500+ Single core score in Geekbench 3
78,000 Antutu 6.0.4 score
Great battery life 8 hours+ screen on time
Fast LTE support 300mbps
Sharp and bright screen. Ver decent 1080p panel
Great price Vs performance ratio
4k video with Google camera
FM Radio
Great sound quality
Cons:
No NFC support
Only quick charge 2 and not version 3 the chipset supports
Camera is very poor in low light
Very poor video in low light (Useless)
No 4k video support in the stock camera app (Need to use Google camera for 4k)
MIUI 7.1 has Chinese in and around it (No global MIUI 7 ROM yet)
No root yet, locked bootloader too?
Final thoughts.
I'm impressed, an amazing phone considering the price. It can beat some flagship models in everything apart from the camera. I cover all this in the full video review.

Hi Chris ! Seems you're the first one who got hand on this - very nice - phone !
About the camera, can you test with "Manual Camera Compatibility" app to show if they let some manual settings avaible ? ( could solve the low light issue with the appropriate camera app : freedcam or fv-5 if manual shutter is avaible)

i ordered mine from GearBest yesterday.
Says it will be shipped on the 19th, but then customs will probably hold onto it for a while
I got mine from Aliexpress, hopefully it will get some custom roms or root soon so I can remove a few Chinese apps. Or a global rom asap.

Thanks for the great review of the Pro - I wasn't aware the pro was available to buy yet - your very quick off the mark - amazing stuff.
So just placed an order for one on Aliexpress with Fantacy Technology but now worried about the software.
Do I just message them and tell them I want an unopened box i.e. phone straight from the factory with MIUI 7.1 English and Traditional/Simplified Chinese language only?
See I don't want any tampering with the software before I receive it. Want it just as dispatched by Xiaomi.
Thanks for any advice
Hi,
Yes that's what I did. I asked them to just send me a factory sealed RN3P without opening it. Otherwise they open it up and install Google Play. And they did that for me which was great, just send it exactly as they received it from Xiaomi. Reason I got it so fast is I was talking to the seller on Aliexpress just after the Chinese launch and got him to get it especially for me before it ran out of stock. First release in China sold out in a day or something, but he was able to get a few units. But only in white. Of course I had to pay extra for this
Any info about locked bootloader or succesfull root method? Custom ROM would be great for this...

Locked and no root for now, I've tried a few root apps and nothing seems to work.

It's currently just out and sellers are overcharging for it. But it should be around $180 for the 2GB model and just over $210 for the 3GB version. Prices will come down. At the moment it's around $230.

Hmm.. 210 USD is arround 2.800.000 rupiahs, and its very cheap phone with monster spec.
my future phone I hope global rom releases soon I am thinking after Mi5 comes out
twrp and root is a must
Hendrickson can u please check how long does it take to charge from 0 to 100 with the standard adapter & cable that came with the phone thanks....
Here's my review - hope it helps.
Ok so I have had my RN3 Pro for a whopping 7 days now so here's a few things to take away which may help you.
I ordered from Vickmall, the golden 32GB/3GB version I think with conversion was about $380 AUD so not too bad.
- I (stupidly?) took the free postage offer, which I guess from years of ordering cycling gear from the UK where free postage is the norm, and delivery is within 7 days, seemed to be no major issue.
- In hindsight, 2.5 weeks to my door wasn't too shabby, but their poor tracking system means the parcel is often in a completely different country by the time the tracking information is updated (mine is still showing last updated from the 9th of Feb)
On to the phone :
- Well he(she) arrived in a standard China post box which contained the bubble wrapped Mi box, a silicone case (basic, but does the job) tempered glass screen protector and some wipes to clean the screen. External packaging looked worse for wear, but not issues with the internal box (Kudos to Vickmall for the bubble wrap!)
- Mi box was opened I assumed so they could fire up the phone and do a QC check maybe. All films etc were still on the phone.
- Vickmall included a pretty average looking China-AU adapter which actually does the job for now, but I wouldn't want to leave this thing on unattended.
- Despite my repeatedly asking, Vickmall DID NOT install Google Play or Google Apps, but that's literally a 10 minute job to set it up (I honestly believe the people manning the online chat don't relay any customer requests to those who ship the item)
The phone itself is actually a very high quality, feels well balanced, lighter than my Moto X Style and slightly narrower too, and at least 1mm thinner. It's more similar in size to an iPhone 6 and no dramas with it being too big for the average user.
- Bezels are small and the chins aren't overly large or look out of proportion.
- The included silicone case is cheap but it does the job, for now.
- Phone takes a combo of micro sim and SD card (at once) or nano sim on it's own (as it goes in the SD card slot)
- Phone booted up quickly enough, and once I connected to the wifi it ran some OTA updates to the MIUI OS which took about 10-15 mins.
- I installed Google Playstore and Google Apps easily enough and then installed Nova to replace MIUI. MIUI actually isn't that bad, but I prefer the Nova feel myself.
So in reality it probably took no more than ½ hour to set the phone up. It came about 50% charged so I had adequate time to play around with it and move photos, music etc over to it and get it feeling like my Moto X.
So what do I like -
Battery life is great. It was at 100% at midnight, it's 9.15 now and still on 85% with some Facebook, IG etc.
Camera is actually pretty good, with great filters, modes etc.
Sound is plenty loud and clear even considering the rear mounted speaker.
Display is super sharp (IMHO 1080p is more than adequate for 5.5" screen)
Screen sensitivity is awesome. No missed touches etc.
FM radio. I actually missed this on my Moto X Style.
Snappy and accurate finger print scanner.
Expandable memory, thank God!!
Big battery (take note Motorola / Lenovo)
What am I not so keen on -
Nothing really. Being a Chinese phone means that most of the deep rooted files, ie ring tones and themes are in Chinese, however I downloaded one of the many aftermarket apps and got my own ringtones, alarm tones, message tones etc.
There are Chinese ones pre-loaded, but being in Chinese I couldn't actually understand what I was looking at.
Nothing seems to indicate quick charging from the standard included charger (is this normal?)
For mine, for the cost, there's not a great deal out there that's any better. A full 1080p screen, huge battery, metal construction, 3GB with expandable memory and a pretty good camera all for just over $350 is a bargain.
Even tho the phone is a meant for the Chinese market, so it's essentially a Chinese model, don't be put off. Literally ½ hour of time, plus Youtube and Whirlpool forums, and you will find it's actually pretty basic to get it up and humming!
4/5 rating for me!
We need separate subforum for RN3 Pro

Considering buying, QU about RAM

I'm considering buying an unlocked 16GB Moto G4 Plus. I have a question about multi-tasking with the 2GB of RAM. Let me explain what I mean by giving scenarios:
Currently I'm using a LG Stylo (1GB RAM) but have used a Galaxy S6 Edge+ (4GB RAM).
I like that with the S6e+ I can stream internet radio, press home to open up the browser and view a page or take a pic to post to Facebook, press home then send a message in Hangouts, then press home (or recent apps) and go back to the browser without it having to reload the page because of low memory... all while still streaming.
On the LG Stylo if I press home and then go back to the browser it has to reload the page even if I don't run another app. When I try to post a picture to Facebook by the time it loads the camera or gallery it will need to reload the page and I lose my picture sometimes and have to try again.
My question: How well does the 2GB of RAM work on this phone? Can you browse and do other functions without the page being taking out of memory if you go to send a text or take a pic? What if you had two tabs open?
Thanks for the help! Hope to be here rooting soon!

Will recommend 3gb variant because as you dont close background app.S6 is far superior then g4 as it has better processor and ram. They both cannot be compared.

I understand that and should have said that I realize the S6 is much more of a powerhouse. I'm currently using a device with 1GB of RAM and I do close my background apps ( and use Greenify) but it doesn't help... I wasn't sure if an extra 1GB of RAM would help.
I don't see a 32-gigabyte version for sale anymore tho, I looked... Not on Motorola's website, Amazon, or Swappa. I'm in the US and dunno what happened to it or if it was ever available.
I can go with the 64GB version with 4GBs of RAM but considering the phone has adoptable storage I thought of this as an unnecessary expenditure. I guess it's really about the RAM.. Thank you for replying.
I looked up BLU phones but heard about the battery issues that's why I wanted to go with a major manufacturer.

As far as the 4gb variant is concerned it is useless,i have fifa 16,coc,fb,chrome etc in background even though my ram is not fully used.max 1.8 gb have been used not more then that. Moreover the processor snapdrgn 617 is not that powerfull to use 4gb ram.Battery will get affected for 4gb.Verdict g4 3gb suits best for you.
I'm not sure if it's just an error but any 32 gigabyte version I see says it has only 2 gigs of RAM.
I saw a review saying that the phone has jittery animations and feels sort of sluggish. But once it's rooted you could adjust the memory options, the CPU core control, and have it function a little smoother. I see CM and Pac ROMs....

My LG Stylo has the same type of screen, IPS LCD Capacitive, and so has nearly every other phone I've used. I've never had screen burn in and never heard of it happening unless maybe you keep your screen on for hours. I believe it's image retention and not permanent burn in.
Must be some kind of manufacturing flaw unique to the screens in the Moto that causes it. I read the phone gets very hot and that could add to the problem.
I still think I want to buy it, I can't find any other name brand phones with that high of a screen resolution and PPI for a simular price.
Thanks for answering my questions!

Yeah screen retention which will be for 10 mins.Lol same reason why i bought this phone! If you dont have problem with screen retention you should go for it.As far as the retention is concerned it has been reported by indian users mostly, which the phone was manufactured in tamil nadu, india.Have not heard any one of US having that problem.

Got tempted to butt in with my $0. 02, being a new moto G owner and someone with not many work days to clock in lately.
I have the XT 1643, the Indian variant with 3/32Gb. After almost about a month of (rigorous) use, entailing flashing recovery, kernel and ROM back and forth, I find the ROM/RAM parameter to not really be the clincher.
For one, when I was on stock ROM, without even the OEM unlock and just a handful of playstore apps, the UI was OKAY, not what I'd expected having switched over from a 2014 2gig ram zenfone with a puny 8gig internal storage, an x86 Intel processor (which meant compatibility with only 60-70% of all Android apps) and a 16GB ext SD Card. Its Lollipop 5.0 stock firmware (its last official firmware update, as usual heavily modded UI and a truck load of Asus bloat masquerading as system apps) had pushed me to the end of my rope, but a chance attempt at braving to flash a custom ROM (CM based Android 6), followed by installing xposed mods and whiling my time away on android customization forums and such, helped salvage it from getting tossed out, at least for a good six months till its battery died coinciding with Moto G4 hitting the market.
So, coming back to the current phone, a week on, I unlocked and rooted, installed xposed, crammed up a cache of apps and mods, and spent time following how to guides on xda. But, I wasn't really sure if I'd cracked it as yet. Flashing the kernel was fun first time activity, and following up with the dev and users about its features kept me from comparing performance for a bit. However, with flashing to RR ROM, things have begun to look up, I can go about switching between apps or Chrome tabs with no noticeable lag. There's a large set of customization features, which along with tweaking battery and cpu performance have brought me closer to how I'd want my phone to behave.
TL;DR Having a bare bone OS with chosen essential apps, a stable custom ROM with multiple customization features, mods and apps to tweak performance + battery, is what could ideally make the switch over to a higher RAM device worthwhile, which probably is a lot better than running synthetic benchmark tests and comparing results on forums about tests.
About the 64gig variant, not quite sure why you can't find a 32gig one, though signs seem to point to Motos habit of selling different spec models in different markets. And, unless it came with a standard OEM warranty, I wouldn't buy a phone even if it's the better one.
I agree, warrantee is very important. I wouldn't buy a used phone.
I'll be looking forward to getting this device in the next few months. I'm not worried about internal space since it has adoptable storage but I think I'll spend the extra money for the 4GB version.
Thanks for all the help!

Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro (4 GB Ram)

Hi all
Just to say that the new Lenovo Tab 3 pro is out it has the 4 gb ram and the faster cpu.
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...3-pro-10-tablet-64-gb-black-10155326-pdt.html
That must just be a typo on that site no? Why would they do that? If anything they would call it Lenovo Yoga Tab 4 Pro or something. I just got my Tab 3 Pro and love it but wish it had more ram, I was hoping they might announce a v4 at CES this week w/ more ram and faster cpu and the only other thing I would love is AMOLED screen.
Wow there is a 4gb ram one, so weird they just kept the name and everything. i just ordered it, this tablet is amazing only issue is the ram, if this 4gb model fixes the ram issues then it will be amazing. i wish they added amoled screen for the refresh but i guess we cant get everything.
This was a pretty quiet refresh. Bumped processor and RAM but didn't change anything else about it. They also released the Tab 3 Plus, which bumped the processor (8 core) and screen and moved to 2 gigs of ram. Seems like they are still selling the original Tab 3 as a lower-budget version.
Was sorta hoping to see a windows version of the Pro, but there's no sign of a release.
I just got the 4gb tab 3 pro today, I am going to try it out and will report back if the 4gb of ram solves the major issues plaguing the tablet due to the 2gb of ram (which wasnt used well to make matters worse). There is a minor bump in the cpu but its so minor I doubt that will be noticeable.
Would love to see a Tab 3 Plus review, doesn't appear to be much info online... Also limited info available in terms of a release in Canada. Might have to bite the bullet and order off Amazon USA. Thoughts on the Tab 3 Plus anyone? Seem affordable and decent enough specs for a media/games tablet.

The new Pro one mentioned above is the one with 4gb ram and has the projector. Appears Plus only has 3 gb of ram and is without the projector. Not very good with the technical spec stuff, so any tips/advice would be great!

Was going to buy one, but some actual reviews started coming out. The lenovo software lets the system down. It's a fairly standard processor/graphics (not world beating, not a slouch) but there seems to be something going on with audio sync and with an intermittent screen flicker that's giving me pause.
The whole thing should prove to be rootable/flashable, but this tablet's probably too niche to attract much of an xda community (and I'm a novice in that regards)
Just for info, my Tab 3 (YT3-X50F) upgraded to Android 6.0.1 today!
Never expected that. The download is 992Gb.
Only had time to do the upgrade, so I can't tell you if it's improved performance or not.
I'm hovering over the "buy" button on this one and would love to hear any impressions. No reviews for the current model on Amazon.
ETA: Actually, there are a couple paid reviews by clueless Amazon grannies, but not much helpful.

I'm a novice in that regards too. Thanks for your thoughts/findings, I saw the same thing regarding the audio sync issue in the limited reviews that I have seen. If it wasn't of that audio sync issue, I would probably have pulled the trigger already since it seems to be what I am looking for in terms of a media device, but even a slight audio sync issue would annoy the hell out of me!

The Plus or the Pro? I just got the new 4gb RAM pro and its basically exactly the same as the 2gb ram pro that I am going to return. The differences are obviously the RAM and android 6.0 coming loaded on it. The RAM for me made a HUGE difference. The issue I had with my 2gb pro was that I couldnt play a vidoe in the background (yt red) and then browse websites. It would always close the video, I guess because it ram out of ram. Even worse is it would kill my screen dimming app in the background randomly when it needed ram and that has stopped as well. The 4gb of ram def makes a huge difference.
What sucks is I got the 2gb Pro for $350, and paid full price for the 4gb pro, so I am basically paying $150 more for 2gb of ram. Very annoying.
I am still considering sending both back though. I really need an AMOLED display, the lcd display is too bright for viewing in absolute darkness (99% of my usage) and the screen dimming apps work horrible on LCD screens it seems, they just reduce contrast but the screen is still giving off a lot of light. On the other hand the AMOLED displays just dim the pixels and it works so much better in dark rooms using dimming apps. The only thing keeping me from sending both back is the amazing jbl speakers and the atmos app, the sound on these tablets is mind blowing.
If I could just find a tablet with front facing high quality speakers and amoled screen that would be my perfect tablet, but one doesnt exist

Looking at the 3gb of ram non-pro model, the main drawback I see is the really low resolution of 1280x800 for me that is too low, I dont like getting a tablet lower than 1080p. EDIT: it seems amazon is wrong, it has a 2560x1600p display. Now I am thinking of sending back both my pro models (2gb and 4gb models) and getting this and saving $200. I dont need the projector or the extra storage and the 3gb of ram should be enough. The main thing holding me back is the bad review mentioned above. I assume this has the exact same display as the pro.
I wonder how the Snap dragon 652 compares to the Atom SoC in the Pro? Anyone any ideas? I assume it has quickcharge 2.0 since the 652 supports it, the pro has quickcharge as well but its some other standard is my guess. (12v a 2amps on my pro)

Definitely the 4GB Pro. The comparison with the old model is very helpful, thanks! My main concerns are the reports of sluggishness and screen flicker on the older model (attributed on XDA to forced /data encryption), and also whether the Lenovo skinning and/or bloatware are excessive. I'd rather not count on XDA support for such a niche and somewhat pricey model, and from what I've read the methods for the old Pro brick this one. But it sounds like the upgraded RAM and CPU help. Do you find app launching and transitions smooth overall, and the display stable? Any annoyances with proprietary or otherwise preloaded apps?

I have noticed screen flicker but I didnt notice it on the original 2gb pro either. Maybe that is only on the snapdragon versions? It's not really sluggish but its not extremely fast when web browsing for example, but its not sluggish. I havent rooted or removed encryption because one guy tried to unencrypt and load recovery using the method for the 2gb version and I think he bricked it, he said he was RMA'ing it back to Lenovo (hope he doesnt have issues, I would think he voided his warranty )
The RAM def helps I can say that for sure, as I mention I couldnt run anything in the background without it being auto killed, now no such problem so far. I think the 6.0 is pretty good, it feels better than the 5.1 on the 2gb version, seems they fine tuned things a bit. As far as bloat I find it to be fairly unbloated, but I didnt think the 5.1 2gb versionw as too bloated either. It had a horrible implementation of the OS it seemed (due to the ram issue, 2gb is not a lot but it shouldnt have been as bad as it was with 2gb). They must have cleaned that up because I notice it rarely goes over 1.6-1.8gb of ram used. I will pay attention to the display more, I havent used it much yet, but will report back after some more time with it while specifically keeping an eye on the display.
Was talking to a Lenovo Sales Rep on their online chat system about the audio sync issue and she was saying they have "received information that all issues have been fixed." I asked her to be specific about the audio sync issue and she confirmed they were told the audio sync issue has been fixed. Any idea if this is true or was she just saying what she thought I wanted to hear?
Really like the Tab 3 Plus, sooo close to pulling the trigger, esp now that Lenovo Canada has it available for purchase... with a 3-4 week estimated shipping time though. Lame!
I had a go of the plus this afternoon, but in the UK they are selling the Pro 64gb version for £350 quid and the plus version is £250. Anyway I thought i would get the Pro version again after all as it seems to be the best of the bunch.
Just ordered the 3 Pro 4GB. Hope it's a good tablet.
I just ordered it after reading tons of reviews... I will try to play with it trying to get debian running
Does anyone here face poor battery life? Android System consumes over 50% of the entire battery all the time.
