Constant buffering on most streaming apps. - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, hope somebody can help as I'm going crazy with this issue. I bought my first nvidia shield 3 weeks ago after months of considering if I should buy one.
I've been having buffering problems from day one.
I've done a factory reset 3 times, I've watched every YouTube video about how to fix buffering I could find.
I've change the cache setting, tweeked player settings, streaming quality, all, suggestions from YouTube videos but nothing works.
I even upgraded my Internet soeed to fibre extra, shield is connect via ethernet and speed is around 68 down. (with vpn on).
I'm using ExpressVPN (location closest to me).
I've also paid for a real debrid subscription and links are showing on add ons.
I'm having buffering on kodi, bee tv, cinema HD, I have other apps but haven't used them yet but I would guess the problem would still persist.
Have newest version ok kodi leia, everything updated so don't know what to do.
Starting to regret buying the shield, I'd bought a MECOOL km9 and didn't have issues with buffering but I sent it back because I wanted a shield.
Now, wishing I had stuck with the km9
Any assistance would greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Have you tried anything local? As in, a movie on a USB plugged directly into the Shield?
Just trying to see if your stuttering is a hardware issue, of if your VPN is having problems.

Thanks for reply.
I don't have anything downloaded on any USB as I don't download movies, I just stream them.
I've been trying to watch hannibal (TV series) and managed one episode but had to pause it every 20 mins or so to let it buffer.
Then just to test something else, I'm trying to play The Mask, i clicked on the to pirate bay torrent option (real debrid) and after about 10 mins it downloaded bit movie hasn't started. It's now on the kodi list of movies with the mask highlighted and at the top right corner of screen, it keeps flashing something, like when kodi is looking for another source.
I don't have any problems watching YouTube videos, can't say about other stuff as Netflix, but just remember now that at the moment I have amazon prime (just for this month and never used it)
I'm going to use it to see if it works fine.
Thanks for any help.

Well, amazon Prime is working flawlessly. Playing John Wick 2 and picture is great and no buffering.
The shield is behaving fine, as in, it seems to be funny so don't know if it could be a hardware issue.
I've Google a lot and apparently, lots of people have problems with buffering on the Shield.

Just done a test (switched off vpn) and played something on kodi and the buffer/progress bar really progressed quickly and a lot more than before.
I guess it's the vpn then. I'm with ExpressVPN, going to do some research and perhaps try a different vpn.

Sounds like you are on the right path. I have 3 Shield TVs for playing local movies (collection of 1400 movies) via KODI as well as streaming HULU, Netflix, DirecTV now services. I can say I have not had issues with any of these that were related to the Shield.
I would encourage you to check your main Modem/router or gateway (whatever kind of hardware you have). I have internet service through AT&T and their gateway is a piece of crap (IMO), but I find that if I reboot it 1x/month, everything works fine.
Just out of curiosity, why do you feel the need for a VPN?

SOLVED: It was ExpressVPN. I'm using nord now and it's working great. Also saw some posts of people having same problems with ExpressVPN on the Shield. Spread the word.

I agree that Nord provides a very fast VPN. I had buffering issues and received this response:
"Please try switching the connection protocol between UDP and NordLynx. It can be changed in the NordVPN application settings.
"Within NordVPN application open the settings menu > VPN Protocol > OpenVPN (UDP) / NordLynx.
"Afterwards, please try connecting to these newest and closest US servers and check whether the buffering persists..."
Nord support provided (5) servers that met this criteria and while I still encounter buffering, this has helped a lot.

Mostly, VPN doesn't solve any problem when streaming online youtube video, even though you get higher 60mbps. Instead, you'd better try watching or streaming online youtube video with lower resolution, instead of 1080p or 4K 2160p. If you insist on 4K or even 8K, you'd better download ultra hd 4k video. Online streaming high-resolution video is usually accompanied with constant buffering or freezing.

Netflix work around plus more

you can easily watch highly quality Netflix movies plus control all of your PC with the app called
Splashtop Remote Desktop HD. Available from market the price is $4.99. Easy setup and the app works superfast for all purposes. Please hit the thank button if i have show you some solution.
Thanks,
Can u rewind or fast forward?
Thanks works really nice .... is there an option to turn of the display on the streaming server? I was streaming from my laptop and would like to avoid the duplicate display on my laptop.

It is like having your computer desktop on your tab. The problem I have is there is no sound. Check out the devs website faq.. Alot of audio problems. Support sucks imo. The desktop msnagement part works well. I am trying 14 day free trial of playon. It works with netflix, hulu and more.
Sent from my SCH-I500
Audio issues seems to be common there. I have one Win7 computer that has no audio issues with Splashtop.
And another with XP that's normally connected to a tv via HDMI. I get no audio from it in Splashtop unless I plug something into the front speaker/headphone jack. It doesn't even have to be speakers or headphones, just plug in a plug that's not connected to anything, as long as the Realtek software detects it and I select "speakers", I get audio in Splashtop.
Btw, this is a good workaround for Hulu also, if the solution in here doesn't work for you and you don't want to root the 10.1.
Have any of you tried playon it works well for hulu Netflix and streaming any file to your devices my only compliant is u can't skip around at all.
Playon is definetly the better option. Splashtop is good if youre on your own network or have a superb internet connection at both locations. Otherwise play on works a hundred times better due to the compression it uses.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
Huh, I didn't even realized Playon app was working. I've had it installed on my htpc for a while, but when I tried the Playon app on my tablet, screen for hulu shows don't have a video to click. CBS shows had a tiny video on top that I can click to go full screen, but hulu shows didn't. Turns out that even without that small video, I can still click that spot and go to a full screen video. That's great, I bought playon before it went subscription.
Yes you can rewind and fast forward.
There is no sound issue if you go to splashtop website. The sound thing is not a issue its a small easy setting that you have to do on your PC. The support for this setting is very easy and step by step with pictures. Please chk that out.
Hey even I don't have any sound issues ... this is one of the best apps for the tablet currently. No performance issue or anything for me, it's now become a android/windows dual tablet
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
I'm new so I can't post links yet here, but Splashtop support has a workaround that involves changing audio selections and a loopback cable. "There is a special trick to work around the no sound issue on xp. You can loop back headphone out to audio-line-in by an audio cable like this: (i.e. on a notebook, plug in both holes of "headphone" and "microphone")
Also note that for XP, the checkbox for "mute this computer" should be unchecked.
Splashtop is great unless you want to use it to connect to a headless (no monitor) system, then it doesn't work at all. I wanted to use it to connect to my headless Mac Mini for streaming Netflix and stuff, but no go unfortunately.
Heh, Splashtop is awesome, I'm getting LIVE TV on my tablet. I realized that maybe it could stream SageTV (DVR) from my server, I just had to tweak the video in Sagetv from overlay to vmr9 and use the default audio. Non HD streams perfectly, HD isn't quite as smooth but watchable. Here's a couple of pics, one from the today's TDF on Versus non HD channel and another from their HD channel:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/img013a.jpg/
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/img014y.jpg/
Btw, SageTV isn't available anymore. The company was bought by Google last month so maybe we'll be seeing some cool stuff them on Android or Google TV.

Reliable video streaming to Samsung TV?

Has anyone managed to stream video properly from the S4 to a Samsung Smart TV? I can stream video to my UE55ES7000 using the Allshare option in the video app, but the video playback stops every 2-3 seconds and "Loading" appears on the TV screen. This is on short video clips of less than 15 seconds. As far as video streaming functionality goes this is pretty much a waste of time.
The TV is connected to my LAN via ethernet cable, and the S4 connected to a wifi access point which is plugged into the same switch as the TV.
Has anyone got this working acceptably?
same issue with s4 and ES6565, i believe it is because my connection are too slow.
fortunately i get a speed update tommorow, will report back if it solves the issue!

I use Plex (http://www.plexapp.com/).
You install Plex server on your desktop and the client as an app on your Samsung Smart TV and it works pretty well.
Twonky is worth looking at as well.

It will, but you need to install install it on your phone first:

I use Imediashare to stream content to my Samsung tv (not a Smart Tv) using dlna. Does a better job compared to allshare/samumg link.

Ok I just revisited the whole Plex thing (I remember trying it a couple of years ago). I remember uninstalling it last time because it couldn't handle my large music library (85,000 tracks) - whole chunks of the collection were missing after it had completed scanning.
Unfortunately my experience is no better this time. I set up the server, then installed the Plex client on the TV and connected it to the server. I could browse the video content on the server from the TV, but whenever I tried to play back anything it just threw up a blank screen that didn't go away (I waited 5 minutes, which I figured was long enough). Same thing on 2-3 different video files.
I also couldn't figure out any way to use Plex to play back video content from the phone to the TV (which was the whole point of this thread). Setting up the phone as a media server isn't a good solution, as it doesn't have a static IP address (it seems that the Samsung TV Plex client can only connect to servers using a hard-coded IP address). So it looks like I'll be un-installing Plex (again). I'm sure Plex works great in *pple setups but I have to say it's not ready for primetime with Android/Windows users.
So I tried installing iMediaShare, but it doesn't see the TV on the network at all.
I thought this would all be much easier, particularly as I have a Samsung phone as well as a Samsung TV :0(
I just tried the next potential solution, which was the upgraded Allcast app which was released today. This was able to stream a standard def video podcast uninterrupted for a minute (there's a 60 second limit on the trial version of Allcast), but when I tried to stream mp4 HD video which was shot on the phone I got the same problem with the video stopping every few seconds to buffer.
I'm pretty sure that I was able to stream HD videos from the S4 to the TV last summer, but can't remember what I used to do it. Now I'm wondering whether an Android update has introduced the problem - maybe Ice Cream Sandwich was better able to support HD video streaming than Jelly Bean? Any views?

Youtube consistently buffering

not having issues with any other app (hulu, netflix, etc) works just fine... youtube buffers every 15-20 seconds... Connected via ethernet (microusb to usb ethernet adapter)..
Anyone else having this issue?
I'm having the same issue. But on Wifi.
Doesn't happen all the time. I know I have more than more bandwidth available .
I have this exact issue and it is driving me nuts. Youtube plays fine over my separate Chromecast that is connected to the same TV. All other apps do not buffer. I am connected via WIFI.
I find this happens eventually with mine as well. A reboot fixes it...and it eventually comes back. Same with Vevo and a few other video apps.
I'm also seeing something like this, but with mine, the app doesn't seem like it's buffering. I don't get the spinning circle. The videos stop and start.

Leanback.
My workaround is to just use the chromecast support to watch YouTube videos.
I've also switched to the unleashed kernel to see if that solves the problem

Lean Back being used here as well. A reboot seems to clear it up for a while, but it comes back.
I have the same issue on wifi. It happens with the following apps, haystack tv, pluto tv, youtube and vevo. Netflix and plex work fine. I know its not a bandwidth issue. I'm using AC router and the youtube app on my tv works fine. I hope this is fixed as it is very frustrating.

Yeah, chromecasting works fine, but sometimes I don't want to cast, but want to just use the remote / built in interface.
Also, when I have guests over they just want to use the remote, but are plagued with constant buffering / pausing.
I'm having the same buffering/freezing problems. I've looked to see if there's a quality setting that can be changed to easily remedy the 1080 problems but can't find it, if there even is a setting for this.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Same problem here. It's super annoying. To the point that I'd just as soon watch it on my phone. My connection is only 3mbps. I don't want to watch things in high Def!
Same problem here. The lack of Google support on the nexus player is ridiculous. I mean come on, they own YouTube and it doesn't even work on a device they created. Its a joke.
Same issue too. Tried with both the Youtube (leanback) app and with casting.
Video starts to buffer at some point and I can't do anything to prevent that.
Has anyone got this figured out? Bandwidth isn't my constraint. I'm half tempted to contact Google and tell them I'm sending back their hockey puck and they can shove it up their ass.
Very frustrating .
Is there no website or link that people can report bugs on the player? I mean how long has it been out already and they are yet to resolve so many issues and also the lack of new apps is pretty surprising. I have a hard time to believe that there has only been 20 people/companies to release a app for the player.
And if there all those TV manufactures going to support NP, wouldn't you think they(Google) would be hauling a$# to get the OS stable and up and running?

Updated YouTube app yesterday... Still buffering.
This is insane. I love Android TV. I truly believe that the idea of it is perfect. Chromecast, games, control with a standard remote or smartphone. The execution is seriously lacking though. Why does it seem like Google cares so little about it's TV platforms? Getting Youtube to work as well on Android TV as it does on my phone or tablet does not seem like a significant task. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is an underlying hardware issue with these devices (I know there are a lot of complaints on the Plex forums about HD videos freezing), but some communication would be nice. I have reached out to Google support and they were very responsive, but the overall response was "we are looking into it" and that was months ago. Not very encouraging . . .

Nvidia Shield TV Console & Router settings?

I got my Shield tv console delivered yesterday, (late as possible damn ups) and love it so far, haven't had enough time to play more, but after work today I will. I have an asus rtac68w, which according to nvidia is a held ready router, but I need to know what and how to set up my router to optimally perform for my shield tv and streaming.
Any help people?
The Shield is like any tablet or smartphone. There is nothing "special" to set up in the router for it
It's just highly recommended to use a wired connection for the Shield but have wifi configured too because they're known bugs with current firmware when the network isn't wifi. So sometimes you need to switch to wifi to do some stuff then back to wired for optimal performance. They'll fix this later I guess.
ps: go there : https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/159/ instead of XDA, you'll find official NVidia reps. XDA is ignoring the Shield Android TV so let's us leave.
Basically, to set it up best; Connect it to ethernet that goes straight into the router. That said, You want to make sure it connects to your 5GHz network, that your 5GHz network does not have legacy support enabled (AC only if possible with no N or A support). WMM and BeamForming is helpful sometimes. Those are the basics.
So, whatever you would do to optimize your WiFi for GameStream or GRID on the Shield Tablet or Shield Portable, you could do the same things here, plus the option of straight gigabit ethernet.
I hadn't heard of the issues with the Wired ethernet personally, hopefully they fix that pretty quickly. It may be specific to certain environments or other issues. Also, I know that the controllers use WiFi-Direct (rather than BT), however anything with that causing part of the networking fails would be pure speculation on my part.
I haven't had any issues with Ethernet

Actually it's the wired connection that 'might' mess with the initial controler pairing:
from a NVidia rep:

If you are unable to pair your SHIELD Wireless Controller during initial setup and your SHIELD Android TV is connected to your network over ethernet, try temporarily disconnecting your ethernet cable to go into WiFi mode and check if pairing issue is fixed.

I haven't had problems either hardworking the console or using the Shield Tablet in console mode and using a Micro USB ethernet connector to hardwire the tablet. I must say that I get less lag streaming games in 4K from my PC using the console vs the tablet. I just wish I could sideload Amazon Prime Instant Video and M-Go so I could stream whatever 4K video content they offer besides only Netflix and YouTube video in 4K. No studdering, no buffering, just good quality 4K video from this thing. I must say, this console could have a major impact over how games could be delivered in the future. No latency at all except 1st person shooters being streamed via Grid. This is the best device I've bought in a long time.
I had some issues with DHCP when first setting up my unit on a wired connection. It kept disconnecting from the internet even when showing a connection. I set up my IP manually and updated to 1.2 and have had no issues since...it is super fast but may still setup wifi as you said just incase.

What happens when you side load Amazon video and M-Go? I was able to side load a bunch of apps (including M-go but didn't run it yet) from my rooted samsung Note 2014 by backing up my apps with Titanium to the micro sd. I then moved the micro sd to the Shield TV and used ES File Explorer to auto open some of the zips that contained the APK and installed from there. From my memory, since I'm not at home to check what else I side loaded, I have the following working so far:
Chrome Browser
Dolphin Browser
Dropbox
Google Drive
Popcorn
Showbox
Helium
Facebook
Hulu Plus
Photo Circle
Speedtest
Ppsspp
And jut tested m-go
I'll add that when I first set up the Pro yesterday on a wired connection, it had all sorts of problems -- including not being able to download the update. Had to go wireless to get the update, but by that point it was acting so strange I did a full factory reset right after. (1.0 seemed quite buggy, but 1.2 feels fantastic so far. HUGE strides!). Haven't had problems since.

not that I know of. The NVidia forum software is very old and bad, everyone agree on that.
I use Feedly and a RSS subscription to monitor the GeForce forum, it's a bit easier.
I have Amazon Prime Video sideloaded, and it works great. Unfortunately, I think a different version utilizes UHD video because I haven't been able to find any 4K content. Netflix and YouTube have some 4K content, and I've been able to stream some games in 4K, but until the UHD content providers start releasing their content to more devices instead of them signing exclusivity contracts (Samsung) to help them offset the royalties on the H.265 content, which is quadruple what H.264 was, I think most people will be limited on 4K content. Sucks.....

SM-T580 + Sling TV

I have noticed a weird issue with my T580 and Sling. Everything in the Sling app works, except the cable broadcast channels (TNT, FX, etc.). No matter if they are recorded on the cloud DVR or live streaming, my T580 will bring up the player, and show buffering, as well as data being passed, but never loads the video or audio. I have 3 of these tablets in my household, and all 3 do the same thing. Of course Sling is no help. I was just wondering if anyone else with the T580 has Sling and could test this. I can play local channels as well as on demand channels no problem. All other Android devices work without issue. I have tried different ROMs, different firmware, different developer settings and nothing can get around this issue for me. Anyone else have this issue?

I don't use Sling because I get a lot more channels, for less money, using Eternal TV.
