No possible way of getting into download mode. Please help. LG V20 H918 T-Mobile - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I was able to root my phone and use it for a while but then it started reboot for no reason. It is currently running Oreo, H91820h.
I tried to restore to different earlier back up but same issue and a whole bunch of apps complain and terminate itself. Tried to flash Lineage OS and same problem.
So I tried to use LGUP to restore it to stock image but cannot get the phone into download mode.
When I hold the volume down button and plug in the USB cable, I get the fastboot screen.

}
When I hold the volume up button and plug in the USB cable, I get the "Download Mode" icon for about 2 second and then it switches to TWRP screen.
I remember when I first tried to install TWRP, it was version 3.2.1-3. Then I tried to flash twrp version 3.3.1-0 but for some reason, sometime it boots up with version 3.3.1-0 and sometime it boots up with version 3.2.1-3.
I cannot flash anything in fastboot or adb since it always come back with "FAILED (remote: 'unknown command')".
I have tried for over a week, read everything I could on the internet and tried everything but without success in getting into download mode to reload the stock image with LGUP.
Could anybody provide any suggestion or an alternate way of restoring the stock image without requiring going to download mode? May be re-flash with a different twrp version or remove twrp completely so it doesn't show up when I press volume up and plug in the USB cable.
Please, I am desperate. I can even send you the phone if you think you can fix it.
Thanks.

I'm not that familiar with the 918 ( I have 2 H910 )
But from the symptoms you described
I would guess that your MB is shot.
Even if you do manage to get into download mode you'll likely have errors flashing anything. I can look at the phone but it sounds like you need a replacement MB.

Not sure what you mean by "MB". I don't think it means "motherboard" so my best guess is "master boot".
Where can I get a replacement MB and how to replace it?

Hold the phone here, the H918 can NEVER use fastboot to flash, thats why the lafsploit is used to replace download mode with a copy of twrp, leading many H918 users to have two different twrp installs.
To get download mode back flash this from the original lafsploit thread.
Rebooting for no reason is a bad sign (maybe see about replacing your battery if its the original one). Everything else (fastboot not working, download mode replaced by twrp)? Normal.

OMG, OMG, OMG, I got my download mode back. I am so appreciate your help. I wish I can send you a beer.
I must have gone through this lafsploit thread a hundred times but never paid attention to this "OPTIONAL" note and I wasted sooo much time refusing to post a question on this forum thinking I can find the answer just buy combing through the internet.
I believe you are dead on with reboot issue too. I got more than a few times with the phone complaining that wrong battery was inserted and need to shutdown. But I thought my un-experienced flashing of all the junks I did on the phone are causing it.
"OPTIONAL
If you would like to restore download mode onto your laf partition AFTER you have installed TWRP onto recovery:
Boot to TWRP that is on recovery
Flash this zip: laf_restore.zip
This can be done at any time after you are rooted. About the only reason you would want to flash laf back is if you use LG Backup.
TWRP has the ability to backup your phone, so I am not sure why someone would want this (maybe you are more comfortable with it?).
Also, flashing back to 100% unrooted stock can be accomplished by flashing a zip in TWRP, you don't NEED to flash a KDZ, but again, maybe you are more comfortable doing it that way.
The bottom line is TWRP on both laf and recovery is FAR FAR more useful than flashing laf back. You can test new versions of TWRP while keeping your old known working version (for example)."

I just want to say thank you to clsA and Phoenix591 for the help. I found the answer and was able to successfully restore my phone to 100% stock. I know it's hard to pinpoint the issue while trying to understand all the craps that people post on their question. Hit or miss, right or wrong, work or not, I really appreciate all the effort that you did to help me figure out the solution.

Guess I missed it on this one
V20 does have a lot of motherboard issue over the years. Apps crashing and phone rebooting randomly are 2 of them.
Glad you got it sorted and back to stock

Hi I've happened to run into the same mistake however the link is broken. If you still have the file I would really appreciate the help.
I'm usually very careful when it comes to flashing but I made the mistake of trusting someone to unlock my V20 for global use, vendor told me they didn't know if they could do it since it was rooted and their unlocking software detected the root. He needed to remove the root and charge me extra. I trusted him into removing the root and pushed back the agreed upon date like three times. He kept saying he could not remove twrp. Long story short he told me he wasn't able to do it and gave me a discount, he said he was able to unlock it but was not able to power it on as it was bootlooping. I assume it was because he locked the bootloader and once I unlocked it again when I try to go into download mode to restore into LGUP it boots me into twrp instantly. Thanks in advance

My LG G2 is COMPLETELY bricked.

So after 20 hours of fiddling... I can safely say that this LG G2 D803 is completely done.
Given by a friend, the phone started off by booting straight to fastboot, and had download mode available after he flashed a ROM designed for a tablet.
I attempted the .TOT method described here, where I used LGTools. I then only realized that this method was only suitable for an US device, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon (couldn't find a Rogers .TOT). I didn't modify the phone in any way.
I then continued to download the Rogers KDZ file here. Using the method described in the same post above, I performed the upgrade, only to realize that this was method wasn't working either.
I then did some scouring to find a way to boot into TWRP (which was already installed). I found this trick: If you hold the power button down until the phone turns off, you can hold power and down until you see the LG symbol, and then depress and press them again immediately to get into TWRP!
In TWRP... I realized that the partitions were all messed up. It was showing 6GB internal, and countless errors were popping up. Another dead end. ADB was working, but I was unable to push anything.
I then realized I should attempt to flash updated partitions using fastboot. Using the cmd line in Windows, I erased and flashed partitions I downloaded here after putting the phone in fastboot mode.
This is where I did something stupid.
Instead of clicking and downloading on that site, I right-clicked "save-as" and downloaded 8kb corrupted partition files. I continued and flashed them unknowingly... and right after, the phone decided to not boot at all.
Using VMWARE and Ubuntu 14.04, I attempted to reflash the partitions using Linux commands described here. Unfortunately, the device would not show the /sd* partitions. Certainly, the bootloader that communicates with the PC does not allocate the partitions properly anymore.
Alright, the phone wont boot, because I flashed a bad bootloader. No biggie right? I would see the device as Qualcomm hs-usb qdloader 9008.
That's when I scoured for a new method to fix the partitions. I came across QPEST and eMMC Software App to get this device back alive.
I spent hours trying to find the right .hex and .mbn file on Chinese websites. I found 8974_msimage.mbn, MPRG8974.hex, flash.xml, rawprogram0.xml and patch0.xml. I had to create accounts of a bunch of sites to finally download the correct files.
Carefully using QPST, I was able to get the phone in Download Mode (Qualcomm download mode, not LG download mode), and pushed the instructions to the device.
... too bad. I thought I did everything right. The device times out in the process EVERYTIME.

The phone is officially dead, there isn't a way I know of to get it started (at least to fastboot again). It really pays off to check what you're flashing before you do it. The internet is full of crap.

there is a lot of crap on the internet but when you start fastbooting or dding partitions without verifying the integrity of the stuff you downloaded you will eventually brick something. Perhaps this experience will goad you into checking md5 or sha1 before you go about flashing things.

It's very rare that I ensure the md5 is correct. In this case, the file sizes were completely off (8kb rather than 512kb), which is more noticeable than the hash. You're absolutely right. I sent the phone to MobileTechVideos for a JTag repair. I'll post the results when I get it returned.
You made a valiant effort, good luck man.
My hat goes off to you, man. Is it under a warranty that covers accidental damage? A good smashy-smashy would cover your tracks and relieve your stress all at once
I tell you though - fine attempt. Made my day reading this. Never stop at no. Hope you get your phone fixed.
Onward.

Can you not use a fastboot cable and re flash the correct partition images from there. I used that method to recover a completely bricked Kindle fire recently.

I think this are the cases when the warranty should be used. The phone is not on it's best condition, so that should take care of this.

I respectfully disagree. everything described is software related. The hardware is still fine. At least from what I was reading. Which means the phone could be sent back, under warranty and repaired in probably under 5 minutes. It might get a dollars worth of new plastic on it. Repackaged up and sent off to somebody else to replace their broken phone. The losses on the replacement phone would be recouped almost instantly.

Any more updates here ? looks like we need 2 important files specific to the G2 . The .hex and the mnb file to enable writing to eMMC.

bc OP stated:
"Given by a friend, the phone started off by booting straight to fastboot, and had download mode available after he flashed a ROM designed for a tablet"
so when a device is broken, (whether it be hardware or software) by the user, that is not a manufacturer defect. That is misuse, nonwarranty. thats why the guy you responded to said "he did the RIGHT thing and sent it to be repaired at his cost. to do what you are implying is to be a thief." and i agree with him. I actually cringe when i see people on here brick their phones, then ask for ways to unroot so they can get it repaired under warranty. Manufacturers are going to continue to make it harder to gain root access bc im sure theyre tired of wasting time on people who broke their phones themselves, then want it repaired for free. sigh...

VS980 TWRP bootloop after botched lollipop OTA while rooted like a dummy

So yeah. As the title says I had a rooted VS980 on 4.4.2 with some bloat removed and I accidently hit the wrong button when prompted for the upgrade, I was in a hurry. yes, I'm a moron, and yes, I know this is probably wasting someone's valuable time and I thoroughly apologize for my n00bishness
having said that, I have tried to go through various tuts but none of them seem to be working. yes, it's likely that I am simply doing it wrong, but whatever the case I am stuck with my phone in a bootloop always returning to the TWRP recovery. I believe that means it is soft bricked so I'm hoping this can be fixed fairly easily with the right direction and some patience for my ignorance. I can't seem to get it into download mode with turning it off, holding the volume+ button and plugging it in, it just goes to twrp. :'(
my hope is to get a rooted lollipop. if that is not possible then I would be fine with going back to stock or possibly even a custom rom if it's not too awfully complicated. honestly, I'm at a point where I'm beginning to accept that I probably shouldn't be screwing around with it too much and will likely bite the bullet and just keep my phone stock since there are really only a few minor irritants that make me want to root it.
any help is very much appreciated.

actually, it doesn't look to be the same problem. i dont have download mode, but i do have recovery. it boots to twrp like a champ. what i think i really need is how to get the flash file VS98011A_01.zip on my phone via ADB Sideload, specifically when i cant get the drivers to work.
i've tried the following drivers:
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.14.1.exe
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.20.0.exe
LGUnitedMobileDriver_S50MAN310AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3.10.1_3.10.1.0
I may very well be mistaken about what needs to happen, i'm no expert, obviously, but from everything ive read any of those should have worked. i think if i can get the right flash on the phone i should be able to flash it via twrp no?
I"ll help

i just happened to have a brand new data cable, tried again with same result so its not media related unless there is an issue with the plug itself, but it's charging and the Device manager shows the correct name ie VS980, it just has a yellow bang on it and i cant find a driver that changes that.
read some more and found others with the same issue apparently which led me to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715408
which is where i found the "download mode restore" file you mentioned(i didnt see it in the thread you provided), but without the ability to get adb usb command to work i dont see how i can use it.
any ideas?

awesome, ty sir. i happened to have one of those laying around from when i cracked my screen on my old one and couldnt interact with the screen. took a while to find it buried but i have it and i have successfully been able to access a thumb drive. i think that might be all i need.
will report back though regardless.
ok, now i'm rrrrrEEAALLYY freakin confused...

from

but when i reboot, it goes directly to twrp still.
wat? :'(
ok, installed this:
VS980 39A Firmware
from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g2/development/vs98039a-stock-fw-t3051560
rebooted, went straight to twrp again.
installed
Restore to 100% stock
from the same page.
rebooted. it went into an upgrade screen that errored and then rebooted before i got a chance to write down the error. but when it came back up, it started "android is upgrading".
so it looks like this may have worked. again, will update the success/failure when i know for sure, but thanks for the help yall. i really do appreciate it.

Yep, now another problem though. ..no mobile data. .. working on it.
I'd suggest flashing the files in post 12 (I didn't and am having TONS of problems)
So I really didn't get a fix- still working on it.
I have no download mode, and not way to get the serial port to display in device manager, so the LG Mobile support tool won't see my phone....

LG Stylo 2 Boost Varient Permanent Root Accomplished!

PLEASE HIT THANKS IF THIS WORKS FOR YOU
ok guys i got permanent root there is one pre qualification you will need to accomplish this you must be on software version LS775ZV3 currently this is the only version that can get temp root from kingroot which is what you will need to start this process. ok so if your one of the lucky ones that have that software version and didnt update go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461 and download the latest version of kingroot which i believe is 4.9.6 install it and run it and get temp root, after you verify that your phone is rooted what we need to do now is replace kingroot with super su without rebooting the phone a softboot is ok the temp root will stick with a softboot your going to have to go to the link and follow the guide there to replace kingroot with super su using terminal emulator http://forum.xda-developers.com/a310/general/how-to-remove-replace-kingroot-kinguser-t3308989 . so after you follow that guide kingroot will be gone and super su is now on your phone. super su will ask you to update the su binary make sure to use the normal option, after you press that button it will start to update but will fail so what your going to have to do next is install (Root) FlashFire to install the su binary update manually which can be found here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.flash&hl=en and the su binary zip file can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 . i recommend the stable version, download that zip and put it at the root of your internal memory after you do that and install FlashFire on your phone its time to get down to business open FlashFire when it asks for root permission make sure to grant it after that hit the + symbol then press the button that says "flash zip or ota" when it opens it will show the content of your internal memory locate the su binary zip file that you put there earlier and press it to load it up to flash, make sure the only thing checked is the "mount/system read/ write" and hit the check mark to ok it then hit the wipe button and make sure the only two things checked are the "Dalvik cache" and the "Cache partition" hit the check mark to ok it. after that scroll down to the very bottom and hit the flash button after that it will start to flash the updated su binary and then it will reboot and i know it seems scary but the red notification light will stay on until it reboots all the way and there will be red text that pops up and says boot verification fail it scared the hell out of me i thought i bricked my phone again anyway give it a minute or two to boot and once its done and boots into android you have a fully rooted LG Stylo 2 like i said i have the boost variant not sure about the other versions but these steps are pretty universal on any android device also just so i don't get blamed do this at your own risk im not responsible for you messing your phone up but it worked for me perfectly i have restarted my phone normally a hundred times and root is there every time anyways enjoy im not much of a developer so please don't ask me about custom recoveries or custom roms i don't do that but now that we have root maybe a developer might come in and help or something.

when you remove the battery and restart the phone is it able to boot back into android? not sure why it would hang just follow the steps to a T it should work, this is the exact same way they rooted the kindle fire 7 5th gen with blocked bootloaders as well that is why I said its pretty universal and not device specific but if your phone is fine just reboot and retry.

I've rebooted and retried multiple times over and always have the same issue. My phone has always had the red writing when you first power it up, ever since I rooted it with KingRoot anyways. Is there anyway to get it back to 100% stock? Would that help? And when I say 100% stock I mean above and beyond wiping it

You must be getting some error message on the black screen. It usually fails if the framework is incorrect.

Make sure your phone isn't Version 4. If it is....then that's probably your issue. This method only works for Version 3 not 4

Hhhhhmmmm......I would say to put all your info that doesn't expose you up on here so people know of your issue. Speak to an admin or the OP and see what info they would require to be posted. Every article I've read so far has been positive when it comes to V3 on Boost variant of Stylo 2. Unfortunately I have V4; so I'm patiently waiting.

I flashed the zv6 tot and kept getting an error but like said i was passing the antirollback. I think lgup doesnt like the zv6 tot. But 5 times i wiped the partitions as long as i didnt reboot and directly reflashed zv8 in the same session i was good.
And it hung the last time and i nudged my crappy usb cable like a idiot i rebooted
I am in 9008. No worries. I got my old s5 up and runnin. I think of i can fmake a debrick img just like other lgs i can boot from sd card. I put g5 in the drawer for a few days to think about it.
It's always great to be able to downgrade, but what would this be useful for? For a possible root method?

Or for people like me who had the G5 given to me flashed to Boost. I can't use it on a CDMA network unless it is flashed back to stock. They did away with the plan my friend was on... it was given to me on ZV9. Very helpful.

Thats what im working on now adapting this to the sprint g5. I got kdzs extracted gonna try a diffrent zv6 tot 1st one i got i think is a bad download.
Just been real busy to try. And i dont brick my only phone.so im not all desperate and freaking out. Thats normally why im not scrared to test stuff out. Its just a phone. Yea i loved it but i know one day even 3 or 4 years from now might be fixable.
Just throwing this out there, when I did this Google Play Services kept force closing, I uninstalled Google Play Services for Instant Apps and it stopped. Went from ZVA to ZV8 with no other problems though.

The screen shoulda never been black. Shoulda been dl mode the whole time. Plug into pc and look in devoce manager and see if its the qloader9008.
Also if it made it to 100% there shouldnt have been no issues. As the fone usually reboots when pc shows around 80 to 85% try looking to see if u can boot recovery fac reset or dl mode any more....
thank you, is there any zva to re flash it?

Modem not turning on issue

Hey guys, would really need he help of the very well knowledgeable this this particular phone and the way it works as far as the modem software and hardware wise......
Issue: my modem will not come on, so I will get no service in ANY way, shape, or form no matter what I do.
Things I have tried: go into *#*#4636#*#* menu and attempted to turn on radio, the slider does move to turn it in, but nothing happens. If I leave this menu, and come back, that slider is ticked off. If I go to settings and go to mobile data area, it tells me to "turn off airplane mode" ITS NOT EVEN ON!!!
Brief history of device.....
Was working perfectly fine, had bootloader unlocked, had a custom ROM on it for like 5 or 6 months, no issues. Until one day, the bottom mic just stopped working. No one could hear me talk. Only top mic worked for recording video. Ordered the bottom daughter board that has the mic on eBay, it was the one for my phone, A2017u, no issues at all installing it. Pretty straight forward, I've repaired many phones in my day, this worked for like 1 month. Then I suddenly had software issues, random restarts, kept getting process error so frequently I could do anything on the phone....everything Google ND Android related processes kept crashing making phone inoperable. Decided to reflash the SAME ROM I had without formatting data, I've done before, just had to update system apps of course...bad move. Less crashing, but still crashed and stopped getting service. Only wifi worked. In light of all this....I decided to just EDL back to B21, or whatever the latest one is for my phone, did it through emergency download mode, because phone was inoperable. Everything flashed fine as far as the screen prompts. Phone booted, first took way longer then usual 5-10min, like 15-20. But it booted. I set up everything....STILL NO MODEM!!! I even though the daughter board was defective, emailed the eBay store, they sent me another one, kudos to this guy, he took care of me. Changed the board again, still no MODEM........the only difference I'm noticing is Everytime I boot up the phone, I get a black warning screen saying phone is not protected or something, with the word "START>" on the top right to press volume up or down, not sure which to enter a menu or do nothing and it will start normal. I've never had this before I flashed the EDL.
Any advice or help towards the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys in advance.

What model you have and what edl package you flashed? If you flashed China edl firmware you get China modem,USA edl firmware USA modem etc...you need to flash modem seperate
I got the same problem since yesterday. My device was away for a battery replacement some days ago. After I get it back everything was fine. Yesterday the modem stopped working. In my option I changed nothing. I just get no signal anymore. I'm still on 14.1 Nougat. I have tryed to flash the modem again, made a system, EFS, bootloader and twrp recovery but nothing worked so far. I also tryped to reset network settings and tryed another sim card..

I'm pretty sure I flashed the USA edl as I have the USA model. I know I need the USA one, not new to flashing things. But your saying I would have to flash the modem as well even after the full EDL flash?

Here is the screenshot of the phone itself. I'm on it now that I'm home. So I guess I use the edl tool from DJ and flash the modem again is the consensus?

As you can see, I can tic the mobile radio on, which I did, but if I leave it and let come back it's ticked off ...
And in the second picture you see after I insert my sim car...it'll give a prompt of a voicemail I have, but I get no service.....

Using two neurons was enough for me to figure out that you flashed two different U packages, i.e. did nothing wrong. These packages WILL flash a modem, which is fine.
I don't think flashing a modem will automagically fix your issue, but it's worth trying. If you have TWRP, simply get a modem file from somewhere (for example the LOS threads, 14.1 has an old one but it works, also try 16.1's modem) which of course has to be for your model, and flash it. You can also extract the non-hlos.bin from an official zte update, change its extension to .img, then either flash via Fastboot (fastboot flash modem non-hlos.img) or via TWRP (install - install image - to Modem - select the file)
If nothing works.try wiping all partitions including vendor and reflash.Your modem is included in the USA edl firmware,

Doesn't doing a EDL flash formats all partitions? I do have twrp, that is the only other think I did after flashing the EDL. In any case, I agree to try the re-format everything and try the flash again...what would be the steps to do that correctly, so I don't brick the phone, though I know it seems it's pretty hard to permanently brick this phone, I prefer not to be the first loser to do it.....

By the way, this is the black warning I get Everytime I boot my phone..........this started to occur after I flashed the EDL package..also wanted to add I never re-locked the bootloader to do the flash....could that have to do with my issue

That warning is completely normal. It appears if you have an unlocked bootloader. I have it myself. Not gonna remove it tho as its easier to get into recovery (by pressing volume buttons a menu appears on which recovery, fastboot etc can be selected)

Never relock the bootloader... Makes zero sense, and you'll brick the phone if it is not fully stock.
and yeah, the 5 second screen is just normal

I hear what your saying. But the weird thing is I never ever has this screen until I flashed the EDL. Obviously, I've unlocked the bootloader way before I started having issues with phone. And I never got this screen.... ever. What triggered it to start popping up now??

What rom did you use before?
Edit: nvm. I just read op again.
It was because of the custom rom you had flashed before that there was no warning screen (the rom probably contained a patch to remove it).
All stock roms have have this warning. So don't worry about that

It appears he got a modified bootstack,,this screen does not proof the bootloader is unlocked. When you flash a edl stock firmware with these new bootstacks and your bootloader is locked, you still get this screen

The lack of it doesn't prove that it is locked, which is not the same. While I have never heard about what you said of locked BL and stock firmware (shouldn't happen at all - are you sure you had the bl locked?) he said that he had unlocked the bootloader, and usually the unlocking packages for the G and U flash the modified aboot and fbop files that give you fastboot and get rid of the 5 sec screen. That's what happened. After flashing something else, those files were replaced and the screen appeared, nothing catastrophic
Can you link to whoever said that he got the screen with a locked bootloader? or was it you who had that happen?
