First, Welcome. I hope you enjoy your time here.
As for the 6P, it is working fine. My understanding is that the bans are for new & future devices.
Regards.

This ban will not only effect people that live in the US. Google is a USA based company, so it effects play services as a whole.

Thank you, for your answers.
I asked this question because a friend just came back from New-york, and he told me his Huawei didn't cast the network.
When he was back, his mobile work again.
I suppose, i ll see that by myself

You're welcome.
Consider that Europe uses GSM, I believe and we use CDMA in the USA. Maybe that was an issue?
Beyond that, US distributed phones (not including the ones who had battery & boot loop issues, of course ?) are working fine but phones from outside the US could potentially be "suspect" so maybe there's a way they don't allow them to work? But I doubt it.
Perhaps your carrier can tell you...
God bless & I really hope you enjoy your stay ?.

What I have read is that the ban will only effect newer phones. An old phone like the 6P should be fine. Have you heard/read differently?

@NatesLaw
No. That's correct that devices that have already had access to play stores will continue. *as it stands now* and what I mean by that is trump already hammered the mfg once, if he says three months from now that google can't support even devices that already had access, I'm not sure google can fight that.
I was mainly stating the fact that the new devices that come out won't have access to play services period. His post made it sound like he thought they would only not be available In the US, but it would be worldwide since google is based in the US.
Realistically though, people could find a way to hack the api on the playstore apk to male it work on their devices, its the same way people have found a way to make play store work on phones running MIUI. In theory MIUI should never be able to run the play store apk, but that just isn't the case.

Hello guys,
Thank you for your help. I will give you a feed back soon

Nexus 6p works fine in New-York ?.
How can I close this thread? Just by updating the title?

Nexus 7 3G (HSPA+) - Phone Capable?

Please stay on topic - asking just about the phone capability please.
I have spent an hour searching the web and no thread indicates whether it is data only or also voice/phone capable.
I know that we can pull a phone application, but the question is if the modem is phone capable or not.
If you answer please link to your source, or share how you know.
I think for many if this is also a phone (and not just a VOIP sub-par option) it could go head to head with a Note2, with a reduced budget.
Thanks.
Even i am looking for this questions answer but not getting proper answer..Its not confirmed yet abt voice calls/sms
Add one more to the list of people who would like to know the answer to that question. I'd like to upgrade my Galaxy S, which is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I wouldn't mind to loose the back camera (I seldom use it anyway, plus I actually have a digital Point-and-shoot). Also, since I don't make that many calls, a small, cheap tablet makes total sense for me...
My guess is that, if the Nexus 7 with 3G is anything like the original Galaxy Tab (probably one of the original Android Tablets) on that department, then voice is a given. But you never know if the modem is crippled in any way...
Also, since we're on this topic, any news if the launch date is global, or only for the US? And if the 3G will be Europe-friendly, for that matter?
Miguel
I have used Line 2 on mine, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Interested in knowing too.
Interesting topic..i've plan to upgrade my n7 to n10 or n7 3g..

This is exactly what I would like to know. Is there hardware that needs to the N7 to make it 3g capable or will Google send and an update to current N7 owners?

As far as I know, currently shipping N7s completely lack any kind of 3G-capable hardware. It's simply not installed, period. And, since that hardware it's a tiny chip with even tinier contact points that needs to be soldered at manufacturing time (not to mention the rest of the supporting hardware, including the antenna, and already supposing the PCB actually has the required traces in place, which may or may not be the case), then ANY currently N7s being sold will never be 3G capable by themselves. Unless someone develops some kind of dongle to be added, though I don't even know if that's possible...
So, unless I'm terribly wrong, to get an N7 with 3G, you'll need a new one.
Now, one question that popped into my mind in the meanwhile. There was at least one review that took the N7 apart that found out the PCB for the N7 actually has a mounting area for a back camera, and probably all the PCB traces are in place, too. At the time, the reviewer said it could have been a leftover from the design phase, or something that had to be cut back due to the target cost. With these new SKUs popping up, do you think Google will eventually throw the back camera in at some point?
Miguel
i,ve asked google customer support several days ago on this same question but not yet get an answer. one thing i,m certain is that this all depends on the modem.that is, the modem may be data connection capable only, or may also be capable for making voice calls.

How did you manage to do that? I've been all over Google's support pages and have found nothing that even remotely looked like an e-mail address where we could ask for questions. Or a support form, for that matter...

My guess is, unless someone can get their hands on one of them before November 13th, we'll have to wait until at least then to get this question answered.
Also, a bit OT, but does anyone know launch dates for all countries? It would suck so much to have to cross the border just to get my hands on one... Right now, you can only get the 32GB Nexus 7 in Portugal (we completely skipped the 8GB and 16GB versions, they were never even available, though the good news is that we got the 32GB version along with the US), though only through retail (no Play Store for anything other than apps).

I can't remember very clearly . i just playing around at android.com looking for some customer support page, where i could ask questions via email since i am not at us. i finally made it at some page like 'my order'. i filled in some personal info, and managed to sent out my question to google. the 'order id' field was not required, but after that i was not able to find the page anymore. the support pages really sucks. just toooooo much links and i keep jumping everywhere and finally get lost,

If its no voice calls then i will not buy i guess, better i will buy galaxy tab 2 but NoT sure but on gsmarena.com they mentioned that ONLY DATA,NO VOICE CALLS on uppar side of specs.
I have been trying to find the answer to this question as well without any luck. Would be nice to get this confirmed or denied in a official way but i guess we wont know untill nov 13th

here the response from google customer support: The Nexus 7 3G version currently does not have a built-in phone app, so it will not be capable of making any phone calls. It has 3G data connectivity and Wifi as of now and currently may be used with any carrier that supports GSM/UMTS/HSPA+.

Still can't find anything besides a "send feedback" link over at Android.com. I think you were extremely lucky
Anyway, that reply might be a good thing after all: we all know the phone app is disabled for the N7, it has been said before. However, as someone also already mentioned, it's usually possible for people to enable that app, even if you need a custom ROM for it. So, assuming the whole "does not have a built-in phone app" thing only means "we didn't enable voice capabilities because, frankly, it would cannibalize our other offerings, but the underlying hardware is perfectly capable of doing that" (not that you would actually hear anyone from Google saying that, or have them write that down... lol), we'll be golden.
Is any way you can reply to that e-mail and specifically ask which is the baseband/chipset they will be using for the data capabilities? If we had that tidbit of information, we should be able to know if voice could be unlocked or not...
What a way to start my day, with a hopeful news... Nice!

i reply the customer support's email with another question but they didn't give me the direct answer!
my qusetion was:
"thanks for your kindly help. would you tell we if the hardware modem itself supports voice calls? as you know,in android,a 3rd party phone app could take the work of the built-in phone app. so lack of built-in phone app really doesn't matter much. eager for your reply and thanks again!"
their response:
" The N7 3G version can be used for Voice over IP calls, such as Skype, or Google Voice, etc but you will not be able to use the tablet as a phone. Hope that helps."

Technically No...
It doesn't answer whether or not the modem(radio) inside the device has been limited (hardware wise) to only a Data connection.
The N7 runs the tablet version of Android, which means the Phone Feature (dialer, etc) has been removed.
The phone dialer you see on some tablets, are custom to that manufacturer, not added by Google.
What we need to know is if the Hardware part of the N7 will allow for a Voice connection to be made. If so, then the Software part can be added back in. Which I'm sure if the hardware needed is there, then the many geniuses here on XDA will quickly make the Dialer appear
And I might be completely mistaken here, but SMS should be possible since its Technically Data, and only requires a Phone Number to route the messages. If SMS is possible, I would be happy with just that, as I do not use voice (if I needed to, I have a cell for that, which I pay an extreme amount for, but only make on average 2 calls a month) - But this would also require the SMS app be added back into the N7 firmware.

I think it all come down to Waiting... Waiting for the device to be release, and someone taking it apart to see what its capable of.
Since Google employees people in their service department that are not completely "Tech" savvy, I don't think we can take any answer they give as fact.
I called them the other day, and asked about the Modem/Radio within the Nexus 7 3G.. and The CSR answer was "No you can not plug a Phone Cord or Ethernet cable into the device, and if you want to listen to the radio you must download a 3rd Party App or Try our Google Music service, but it's not a radio" - Couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably for 10min straight.

This should be automatic if ro.product.device starts with "GT-I819" (ie GT-I8190).
But I see the official name is "golden", so next release should set it automatically.
I've enabled "golden" on Google Play for anyone who wants the full Unlocked version of Spirit.
I can only support phones well when I see sufficient sales in the Google Play app stats.
CM ROMs may stock using the stock audio library at some point, as they have on other devices. When that happens FM audio will no longer work unless I devote time to it, and ideally buy a phone myself. But I can't/won't do that without sufficient sales, especially if I get bombarded with support requests and debug logs from pirates.

To gauge popularity among custom ROM users, I look at the total XDA post counts for a phone, relative to it's age and thus the phones position in the XDA forums homepage.
IE, please don't start any campaign to get a lot of people to bug/harass me about this.
Another factor is, "does this phone sell well in parts of the world where apps, and Spirit in particular, are purchased ?". Certain corners of the world have very high piracy rates.

I tried it and it works ... though it's pain in the ass to search for stations manualy, etc.
And other things could be better, but if it's the only solution, hey... I'm OK with it.
Btw, you don't even have to change things in settings. It worked for me instantly, the moment I turned it on.
Maybe just change from 'North America' to 'World sth' (if you're not in NA), you can leave the other thing on 'automatic'.

Well because I don't know that they should be there in the first place. They were added by Huawei and therefore are not part of what a Nexus should be (similar to why I remove carrier specific packages), and especially because I don't trust anything I don't know what it does.

And now the New York Times has reported snooping by Huawei
Hello psyonicus,
I posted this on the Google Nexus 6P forum yesterday so these modules you discovered are much more worrisome:
"I just read this NYT's article,
Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
It says that a Chinese firm, Adups, who makes software for updating a smartphone's firmware, was discovered by a US security company to be monitoring owners' phone usage. One of the two manufacturers who use Adups is Huawei, the maker of the 6P. Some quotes from the article:
"Security contractors recently discovered preinstalled software in some Android phones that monitors where users go, whom they talk to and what they write in text messages. "
"Adups intentionally designed the software to help a Chinese phone manufacturer monitor user behavior"
"Adups provides software to two of the largest cellphone manufacturers in the world, ZTE and Huawei. "
Google, please assure us that this firmware is not in our Nexus 6P's!"
Since this is my first post, I wasn't allowed to include the link to the NYT's article but you can look it up easily from its title.
I hope others will now also follow up on this story.

Android pay is as useless as Apple Pay since the merchant needs to have a contactless machine. Samsung Pay, on the other hand will be more useful as it can be used virtually anywhere. Plus, I'm very disappointed by the very small number of banks supporting it in the UK.. No Barclays, no Santander, no RBS/Natwest etc...

According to the BBC article from yesterday:-
Google has said that it will extend Android Pay to the UK "in the next few months".
Guys
Android Pay is finally live in the UK and can be downloaded from the Play Store (if it doesnt show up on the one on the phone go to web-version one)
At the moment only couple of banks are participating but i can say i installed and used successfully at Waitrose with my First Direct Card
One thing to keep in mind - is that for some users (esp Samsung S7/Edge users) when you try to add a card it tells you that Android Pay cannot verify you are using a legit version of android. This happens to un-rooted users and is due to the DPI change; as you remember you can change DPI in Samsung Display Options - if it is set up to condensed it wont work - so you need to revert back to Standard - then add the cards and then you can revert back and use your android pay
Have fun everyone
and lets hope more bank will be used soon (eg AMEX)

What is your problem?
I said it will be launched in UK on 23rd and it was
Also - why do people have to be rude and aggressive - especially you - as i have seen your replies to other people's post
you seem to be full of rage and constant need to attack and offend everyone
Jeez - get a life is only a freaking phone/feature

Kinda wondering whether to bother setting this up, or just wait for Samsung Pay to launch. It can't be too far away now surely.

Not sure when Samsung pay will come to UK - probably in Autumn most likely
Android Pay is easy to setup and use - as long as you keep the native DPI on your phone (if you use the condensed option it wont work)
i like the condensed DPI so i am not going to use AP for the time being (also since i do most of my transactions on my Amex and its not supported)
hi guys can anybody tell me can i be able to pay with Android pay if the phone doesnt have NFC chip
like tap and pay function ?
Android Pay does not work on Rooted Device.
Mine is rooted, TWRP
Check this out, I was able to add a card "Just my bank is not supported"

Chinese malware / spyware app built-in in the system of my s10+

Just realized that the built-in Storage Analysis function in Device Care settings is powered by 360 Security.
As far as i know this is an app written by the Chinese and is highly probably comtaining hidden spyware that send confidential data to the Chinese government.
Any chance we can disable it, so that even clicking into that menu won't do nothing? I rather not use that funciton but to be safe. I was trying to use adhell to disable something but couldn't identify which system app is it.

Hey there,
is there any hard evidence, that it sends package data to chinese-based servers, other than those mentioned regular update requests/database updates? AdGuard firewall log or something would be helpful. :good:

thanks, i will try adguard.
Generally I don't trust any software/apps from PRC, it wouldn't harm.

One shouldt always be sceptical when it comes to personal data. There have been incedents with data extraction in the past, older Xiaomi smartphones running dated firmwares were collecting personal data and sent it back home to chinese servers.
On the other hand, the amount of data Google collects from each and every Android device is quite terrifying. And I don't think that Google is the most trustworthy company in the world...

oh yes, i believe Google is collecting my data as much as I believe in I am a child of my mom.
But it comes down to reputatuon and which one is more harmful. Google is a commercial cooperate, and PRC? lol
I am using android anyway, so no matter what google has got my data, why share another copy with the Chinese?
But Samsung isn't a Chinese company, so why would they do this? I could understand if this was Huawei or Xiaomi.

Probably because Vietnam isn't the home of a security software company. ? China... Vietnam, you're probably splitting hairs anyway.
BTW, where was your phone manufactured. In the US they use McAfee which is probably my most unfavorite next to Norton.

I guess the main reason is that there's no other good alternative in the market. Maybe there's better option but will you pay for that?
The hilarious thing in this post is that the "blind-love" to google, which makes my day My 2 cents are that in S10 there are more parts comes from Chinese venders than ever, so if you are afraid of that, maybe the best way is not use a mobile at all.

ah ah ah .. I don't know from where you're from but as far I know, the WORST and BIGGEST spy are the usa : do I need to remind you about julien assange, chelsea mannings and many more ? Or the echelon program and so many we aren't even aware of ? (not to mention data collecting/selling by facebook/apple/google...) (I'm also not speaking of the stinky ****ty messy smelly bad **** they're doing all around the world, wars, geo politic business/manipulation just for the sake of them being able to keep on goin' in the good 'ol american way of life...)

Thanks for a post that is almost 100% BS and factually wrong. Julian Assange was Australian and he was a fugitive from a British arrest warrant. Chelsea Manning leaked intelligence documents and as far as I know wasn't involved in cyber crime. Where your hatred of the good 'ol American way of life originates I don't have a clue but apparently it didn't originate in school.
you guys might not know much about china and privacy in china, so just think steal personal data is a joke, as a guy who live in Hong Kong, i can tell you this is much more scary than you though, just like the huawei 5G in US now, many years ago, people in HK already know china company will steal data , but US just realise this recently...

what you said about USA might be true but at least they have freedom of speech.
Do you know in China certain words / phrases which speak the truth about PRC (such as 4th June 1989) or Xi Jinping's nickname, are filtered and monitored on EVERYBODY's phone and EVERY apps, so that you cannot even send those words out and police officers could just turn up at your door to arrest you.
Also, i havent seen any partnership between organizations like facebook and google with the US government... but Huawei, QQ (360 security), Xiaomi?? HAHAHAHAHA

there is no blind-love to google, maybe just blind-hate to Chinese companies.
i cannot live without a mobile, so i pick the "better" option.
A bit like the call screening function Hiya on the devices and also another call screening option on T Mobiles end that one cannot disable. They all steal and share the data.

LOL, that's what happens when kids get phones.
I'm no longer using a smart phone because of this Chinese software in my s10+. I'm switching back to my brick phone
