Google Maps 6 gets killed running in background - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

Hi guys, is anyone here still using Google maps v6?
It is still working fine, except that on this phone (s10+ Exynos) the app gets killed when running in the background.
At first i believed it to be because i had added the app to the sleep list. I had done that because the system keeps saying the app is eating up battery, even when not running.
So I removed the app from the sleep list, but it keeps getting killed.
How can i make sure that an app never gets killed when running in the background?

Try this go into settings and search optimize battery usage, and then press optimize battery usage listed. You have the options to see what is not optimize battery usage or all click all on top left and see If maps is toggled on. If so toggle off.

I have those settings now, and removed the app from the sleeping apps (again). I'm afraid the system will put it back on the 'sleep' list again because it uses a lot of battery in the background (I get regular warnings about that).
Anyone have an idea why this app would be so active while not even used?

I have the same settings as you have.
What happens is that i get warnings about the old apps eating battery. I guess i then put it to sleep without noticing.
I restarted my phone, did NOT start mapsD, but its still doing something on the background.

It's v6 of Google Maps. It had a much simpler interface, and easier to use when looking for alternative routes.
And it doesn't have all that commercial baggage of the new version, which is way slower too btw.
The only thing is, why does it use battery when not even started....

Being it's an old version I would think you downloaded it from the net and not the play store. Maybe it has hidden spyware etc?

amazing battery life

Just few quick tips that will help you get amazing results:
1. get the app called Autostarts from the market
2. in the app kill after reboot google maps, talk and social hub(you can find it on scond line in the application from the possible options.
3. Get Titanium
freeze wifi sharing manager and wifi manager.
You are done
Enjoy!
Have you tried dl'ing anything from the market after doing this? Because in the help section it says you might not be able to dl anything from it if you disable Google Talk.
Why not just log out from Google Talk instead?

O-o-ps!
I just realized that I've madeb a mistake:
I was meaning google voice but not google talk.
SORRY!
Elaborate on point 3 please.

I think the point is to have it done automatically every time.
Exactly! You can stop them manually but they will reappear again. With the program mentioned above you can do it for good - google maps, google voice will not longer drain the battery without need. Tiatanium will take care for wifi sharing manager and wifi manager - yet another big, big battery drainer that won't affect the phone in any way
Thanks for the tip. I got the program autostarts but I am not able to manually disable google map and voice. I just see several lines of google services framework. Is this it?

Time to do some testing. I already had autostarts on another recommendation, but was lost on what to do with it.
I have found that using a very (very) minimal homescreen on a black background, using a dark profile for all apps that have the option, and turning wifi off when not needed, I can get at least 2 and a half days out of one charge with light use.
Going to see if this impacts my numbers any. Thanks!

The trick of my recommendation is that the phone is folling in deep sleep when not in use and by that way you can almost double the battery life, of course if not in constant use. To be sure that you are doing alright go get frkm tne market Battery monitor widget, install the widget and if you are running at about 50mA in sleep mode you are just fine.

things I've tried to use to solve this data leak:
- disabling auto sync
- restricting background data on my wifi router
- disable location via mobile network.
and those above didn't help. the consumption keeps rising as i currently write this... any help please?
EDIT: SOLVED!
i went to settings - apps - running
i killed the MEDIA service, then went to cached apps (the top left button on the same screen) and killed MEDIA. the wifi up and down icon stopped instantly.
Turns out, the Downloads app is the one causing the trouble. So by force closing it through its app info, you're stopping this hog.
5 minutes later it showed up again, and i force closed it again.... still testing. maybe greenify it?
EDIT2: greenified and solved:
I can even go to downloads app, and still no download loop

Hey this problem is driving me nuts. Can u explain how you greenieifed it? I've bought the donate version and when I try and greenjfy it by selecting the running service from 'apps' it just tries to greenify the 'settings' which obviously doesn't work.
Thanks!

search for the apps from the list from the greenify app itself.
or click on the search button and launch "downloads" app then greenify that
The problem also is related to the playstore app on android 4.2.2 which causes that loop. i manually updated the playstore and the problem is gone even without greenify
i don't have a link right now, but the thread related to this is somewhere in the Q&A forum (if I'm right)

The latest firmware update has made battery life even worse.
Looks like a classic case of over-syncing...
Exhange services = Non-Gmail Sync. That won't cause a wakelock if it's set to manual.
Do you actually use Google Play Music? No? Disable it.
Do you have location services on?

If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of functionality for good old fashioned manual control, the best things to do are:
- Turn off all Sync options (so you have to manually retrieve email, update facebook and such)
- Turn off WiFi when you're not using it
- Turn off Mobile Data when you're not actively using it (when you turn off auto sync, leaving mobile data on is a bit pointless. ) This makes about 2 days of difference.
- Kill off as much bloatware as you can, the amount possible differs between root and non-root. (I'm not rooted.) Particularly the Google Play related and Samsung Hub apps tend to remain active even if you never use them. We never even had Google Play Music and Books here as they were US only, and yet the apps kept running anyway.
- Set the screen brightness as low as you find comfortable. I know the screen is gorgeous, but it's also one of the main drains
- Turn off GPS and all location settings (in both Settings and in Maps.)
- Disable all auto-update features in Google Play, Android itself and such
- Don't run too many widgets
- Black eats less battery than white in terms of screen drain (as black on AmoLED is a disabled led.) So a black background/wallpaper/theme on something will drain less than a White one. (Which makes all the white websites twice as irritating.)
If you get a decent battery life with all these settings, you can then decide one by one what is and isn't worth turning back on.
With 4.3, I believe Google services has started eating more battery. Have the same issue on note 2 4.3

What is App Optimization exactly?

Ok, I just received the N910FXXU1COJ3 OTA on my DBT N-910F with all the security updates. Great, but I did notice that the conveniet app manager feature that killed background processes inside Smart Manager is now gone and from the looks of things, there is a new "alternative" ambiguously called App optimization, within the battery section.
Now I for one am getting pretty tired of this inconsistency and constant feature swapping and come here seeking information. Can anyone actually clear things up for me and explain what exactly App optimization means. Will it simply kill the apps background services and if so, why is the minimum timeout 3 days? I also heard that it is more like a disable fuature for the selected apps, meaning no activity whatsoever, like notifications.
Is there any way that i can make use of the convenient "garbage collection" that Smart Manager used to offer, or am I hopelessly stuck dealing with Samsung`s ADD?
Thanks, any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Ok. I have a call recorder. It just happens to stop working after awhile. I went to app optimazation and disabled it. Does that mean now that my Call Recorder app doesn't apply to these rules and should never shut off or stop working if I disabled it for that app. It's so annoying because all of sudden your looking and your call isn't being recorded. I have to open the app...then it works again. Am I using the app optimazation option improperly?
When I bought the pro version; a message appeared explaining to disable app optimazation for the app so it continuously works. Is this right? And I'm just dealing with an app problem or I'm I not using this feature properly. I want my call recorder to always be working. [email protected]

App Optimization is Doze mode, that simple
You have to disable App Optimization for apps that should always run in background or be accessible without opening the app itself like Tesla Unread, Torchie, some reminder apps an some e-mail apps. In my expirience if an app is being optimized it will not show any notifications and such until "acitivized" by opening the app itself.

Apps that I don't need running in background and have used more battery than I think they should when in background are set to "Always power saving". Exaples: 9GAG. Previously I used Greenify for these apps.
Apps that need to stay active at all times are set to "Disable for". Examples: Reminders, Tesla Unread.
Most of other apps are set to "Automatically optimising".

Battery draining apps?

Hi all,
Like all of you i am conscious of my battery on the S10+.
Considering it is a 4,100mah battery you would think it would last a minimum a day and a half however with me i only get a days use out of the phone (by merely doing some browsing, youtube and whatsapping, nothing intensive). I've noticed that even if i use the phone considerable less in one day vs a heavy intensive day, i still get the same usage - around 24 hours.
I have turned off AOD, Location, have Sync on, FHD display.
In theory if im not using my phone, my phones battery should be depleting very slowly however this does not seem to be the case.
So to me it looks like something is draining my phone (i've had the S7, S9, with the same problem). I've reset my phone, not restored a back up and still the problem persists.
Looking at my battery usage recently i have seen Google maps being the highest used app (however i have location off and don't use the app and even have forced closed it).
Has anyone else noticed this? anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks for this - I have been following this thread quite closely but the reason why i made this separate thread is because i believe after all my personal testing it seems to be app related - Im thinking specific to google apps with all their background services.
Just thought if anyone had isolated this like me and if they had any fixes for this.

Wow that is actually amazing results - which google apps have you disabled and how (i.e. just uninstalled them?).
Also the only google app i only would like to keep is google maps - as i use this when driving here and there.
Last question - you basically have 10hours SoT over 2 days. If you used your phone less, do you believe your phone battery life would extend to 3/4 days even?
