Samsung A40 how to root - Samsung Galaxy A40 Questions & Answers

There aren't yet news about root methods for this phone?
There is a working twrp for the new A40 phone?

Hi,
as far has i know it there is no twrp for this yet (at least at the moment).
i have a A405FN ( EXYNOS )
and i followed this Steps**:
youtube watch? v=s2Xp-lQg1xs
(if it worked for S10 and A50 ... i guessed and i went for it )
i installed the latested magisk say yes to patches updates and plugins after first time open magisk after magisk_patched
It worked, but still have the issue on reboot(not happen with shutdown button ), if u dont press the buttons sometimes it boots without root(magisk will say not installed) .
(it will be nice to have always boot with root.)
There is some other bugs from booting from one mode to other like connecting wifi ( reconfigure network password )
**(youtube link spaces) try it at your own risk. im not taking responsibility for damages warranty void what so ever.
i hope it helps

A40 does not have a Bixby button.
Pressing Volume Down and connecting the cable does nothing.
Pressing the Volume Up + Power boots into Recovery mode. Before booting into recovery mode the Warning screen is shown for a fraction of second. I think there should be the menu for unlocking bootloader, but it is shown too short, so I'm not sure. I can only see the android logo and the warning triangle for a while.
At the recovery menu there is the option to boot into bootloader, but it boots into download mode. Probably because the bootloader is still locked, since the OEM unlocking option in settings only allow You to unlock bootloader, but it doesn't actually unlock it.
So I'm still waiting for instructions how to boot the A40 into Unlock bootloader menu.

Thank you so much, i rooted with success and now this phone is starting to make sense.
Everything works correctly, no problems so far.
Thank you again dear man

Before installing magisk You should know that after that You can not flash custom recovery since magisk is installed at the recovery partition.
I didn't know and wanted to install TWRP, which means reflashing recovery partition. The result was boot loop. I should reflash original firmware and repeat the whole procedure.
Now I'm waiting for the instructions how to install TWRP besides magisk.

With Samsung A40 (A405FN) to boot the system with Magisk, you must simultaneously press the power button + volume up. As soon as the screen with the alert appears, remove both fingers. Immediately afterwards the screen will appear to continue booting, press the power button again.
Once again the screen with the alert will appear and the system will continue its restart.

oh! i didnt know but it seams logic because the way the system boots with magisk, and the first time i tryed i had a boot loop as well ..... then i flashed the original image and tryed again..
Yes we have to wait for the TWRP release the this device, maybe it will be soon since a unoficial release of A50 is released on the forum maybe is a matter of time ... (i will be the first to try the unnoficial version if it comes out )
currently having two ways of boot(w/o magisk ) is not a great solution .

Hi guys,
Thanks for this thread, it helped me to get the phone rooted,
I would add that the data format can be done just before flashing the rooted firmware, this might reduce the stress of missing next boot on recovery...

So every time that I turn on the phone I must follow this procedure, otherwise I boot the phone as unrooted?
Help me to understand
Is there a way to boot the phone with root only pressing power button?

So if I root now the phone then I can't install a TWRP, and at this moment there isn't yet a TWRP for A40
It's not still perfect the root

Root always active?
There is no other way, we are waiting for TWRP.

You have the link to tuorial at the first post: youtube watch? v=s2Xp-lQg1xs
The only difference for A40 is VolUp +VolDown + Plug Cable to boot into unlockng bootloader menu and Volume Up + Power to boot into recovery.

it work 100% ?

I've tried, no problems. Just I didn't restart the phone from magisk, but from system into recovery first. You should restart the phone into recovery each time, otherwise magisk is not loaded, so it's not rooted.

This is really uncomfortable. And at this moment a twrp is missing for A40. Do you think that in future, there will be a way to boot the phone in normal way?

If you are able to boot into twrp then follow the guide mentioned below (Twrp has MTP enabled just in case u didn't know) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-2/general/zip-oxygenos-3-x-t3392826
thank you for the answer.
i dont have twrp installed i've only the stock recovery
what if i do a factory reset ?
i read this as a solution here:

SoftBrick - stuck in recovery with LDU, please help!

Hey guys,
So recently I got a SM-G928X Live Demo Unit. I just read that flashing G928F firmware is completely fine and so I did aaaaand well, I am stuck in recover. Forgot to flash a custom recovery, also the phone has Factory Reset Protection so I am here with:
Android Recovery
MMB29K.G928FXXU2BPB6
samsung/zenbltexx/zenlte
6.0.1/MMB29K/G928FXXU2BPB6
user/release-keys
volume up/down and power
____________________
then goes normal recovery options
and at the bottom of the screen, there's
Supported API: 3
dm-verity verification failed...
Need to check DRK first...
Anyway I can't get to download mode, cant wipe data, cant flash from ADB/SD Card. When connected to PC no software recognises the device so yeah, that's a great situation to be in, right?
So if any of you have any idea how to make this thingy work again, I'm up for anything.
Thanks

Thing is there is this FRP thing and since I flashed a stock ROM it somehow blocks it from reseting the phone and even if I try to boot to download mode thru the button comb or thru the recovery, it just resets the phone and then boots to recovery immediately. Also this thing is preventing me from flashing anything from the SD card or ADB.

The guys were avoiding this issue by flashing the firmware. Since you can't boot into DL mode, that's odd. Maybe smart switch(or whatever it's name) helps. As far as i remember this lock is related with ''OEM Unlock'' in Settings » Developer options. Also there were some tricks around which you should research it at xda or youtube. Good luck.

I had no problem getting into DL mode but then I flashed the stock firmaware for G928F because I found here on XDA that it is completely fine flashing it onto G928X and since then it just boots to recovery and everything else just doesnt work. Pitty. Will try the USB JIG thing and will see..

SM-G950F won't boot, hard bricked?

I had to reboot my device due to problems with my speaker. Now i'm not able to boot anymore.
I'm only able to get into ODIN Mode, and flashing new FW or TWRP does nothing. It'll flash correctly, but as soon as it sends the reboot command the device powers off and does not boot, and no, it does not reach the "Galaxy s8, powered by android screen".
It does not want to power on, and only responds to the odin button combo, can't boot into recovery either since nothing works.
I was running the latest version of Renovate Ice if that matters.
I've searched trough some other threads, but it seems like i'm the only one that's having this problem.
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Edit 1: I've tried flashing both AQK7 and AQG5. Both flash fine, but as soon as odin sends the reboot command to my phone, it turns off and does not turn on.
Auto Reboot is ticked. Same goes for any version of TWRP, it will flash, but when it has to reboot the device turns off and does not turn on. There's nothing on the screen, its completely black and the only thing that does work is Download Mode. I've also tried ereasing nand, and repartitioning storage. Both seem to have 0 effect. As stated in one of my replies, i was running the latest build of renovate-ice with magisk, no other mods, or themes installed.
Im a bit confused - you can only boot into download mode (not into twrp?) and the phone is in bootloop? Have you flashed anything (mod?) before or activated a substratum theme which could cause this?
The only thing I can think of is a) you delete in twrp file manager the corrupted file, if there is something like this or b) a twrp restore from a backup. Boot into download mode and then do not press vol up to go into odin mode but press vol down to reboot - then immediately press the combo for twrp and you will get to the recovery. This helped my s8 many times when I was in a bootloop and couldnt boot up twrp

Thanks for the reply! Other than using the Renovate-Ice rom, and running magisk the thing was pretty much stock. wasn't messing around in twrp either. Its not stuck in a bootloop either, it just refuses to do anything other than go in and out of DL mode. The phone does not respond to any button imputs other than DL mode. As stated in the OP it does not boot at all, just a black screen. i've already tried to reflash a stock FW and TWRP, but that does not seem to work...
try the method I did - this is the last thing I could think of, before reflash the whole phone with odin

Doesn't work sadly, but thanks for the help anyways!
but you havent installed Viper4Arise or anything like that?
Because of this my speaker also stopped working a few weeks ago
if you can get into download mode then get into download mode and leave phone, then download samsung smart switch for your pc (older version like 4.1.17022_20 from here http://www.filehorse.com/download-samsung-smart-switch/29268/ that allows phone based recovery), once installed open it, then click on more at top right, (do not update the software if you get a prompt) select emergency device recovery...., then click on right tab (device initialisation) and fill in your phone details etc., connect your phone (in download mode) and follow the process, maybe it works, you'll need to root and install TWRP again but thats no big issue.

But if you are on newest rom it wont work.
Hello, you can solve this problem?

HELP! I'm stuck on bootloader unlocked warning screen.

Hello, any help would be appreciated as I have seemed to have gotten Myself stuck on the screen that warns Me about the bootloader being unlocked. I hope this is in the right section of the forum.
So I have enabled at least 10 Magisk Modules at the same time, carefully read the files attached to them within the app, tried to make sure they didn't do too much to the system where I'd have to worry about this sort of thing happening but of course, with My luck, it did anyway. I plugged My device into My laptop to try to just flash the magisk_patched.img and it just brought Me back to the same screen, sometimes it would reboot itself several times before stopping when plugged in to My laptop. I've read somewhere that the Miracast module might be the culprit so I sought to enter TWRP through fastboot and delete the module BUT IT'S NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. I have also tried all these button combinations I kept seeing people talk about on various forums, like pressing all 3, Power+Volume Up, etc and holding them for various amounts of time and none of this has gotten Me past the warning screen. I seen something about uninmod but I've heard that this doesn't work on v.19+ and I can't seem to even find the magisk folder anywhere at all to begin with. I couldn't backup My phone because Google kept saying "waiting to backup" so I'm screwed if I have to just restart and hope it doesn't have to come to that.
My questions are:
Is there any folders I may be missing?
Is there any way to backup My device through TWRP or fastboot now even though TWRP won't mount and I can't boot into the OS?
Is there a way to delete Magisk or the modules that I can try, that I haven't mentioned/don't know about?
Thanks in advance!
Sorry didn't see this until today. Did you end up giving up and starting over with a clean flash or still having issues?

It's all good. No I wasn't going to mess with it until I done enough research or someone had replied and I had the time. I was thinking about doing something today or this weekend. I read some things online that I bookmarked about using the "pull" command on ADB, being able to save the image from TWRP after using the fastboot command to boot into TWRP, and I seen some other post on XDA about a certain method they used to stop bootloops. Even though I don't have bootloops, I'm just stuck, maybe it'll be helpful information. At this point though I'm wondering if I even want to save anything, like will restoring it have Me stuck right back on the same screen? I'm sure I did something wrong because I have none of My old phones app DATA, and I think I thought the Google Backup or OnePlus Switch App was going to put the whole APK on My phone (which I don't want) or the data only, which is what I want. Any help would be appreciated because someone is trying to buy this S10+ but I'm still using it.
First questions: what phone are you trying to fix, s10+ or 7T Pro McLaren?
Second: If you answered 7T Pro McLaren, what mode (recovery, fastboot, etc) can you get into?
I'm trying to get off the Root Warning Screen for the 7T Pro McLaren. I can get into fastboot, recovery mode, and TWRP via fastboot command.

Are you referring to the bootloader unlocked warning? The only way to get that off is to relock the bootloader (will lose personal data when you do this).

I don't want to lock the bootloader or care to get rid of the warning atm. I just can't get past the screen and into the OS. There is possibly a Magisk module I flashed but I can't find the Magisk folder or the modules in TWRP via Fastboot.

Ah. You won't be able to access the Magisk folder in TWRP because TWRP can't decrypt the storage partition on the 7T pros.
One way you can try is by booting your stock boot.img from fastboot using
Code:
fastboot boot boot.img
Just make sure that the boot.img you're using is from the exact version of OOS you are currently running. This should boot the OS without Magisk/root.
The other method (source) is to place your phone into safe mode, then reboot normally, and it's supposed to boot up with all magisk modules disabled.
To put your phone into safe mode:
Make sure your phone is completely turned off
1. Press and hold power button to turn on device
2. As soon as 1+ logo pops up, release power button and press and hold volume down button until device finishes booting up. (Just hold through the bootloader unlocked screen and through the startup animations).
I just tested this on my 7T Pro (non mclaren) and it first booted into safe mode, then when I did a standard reboot via power button then selecting reboot, it started back up in "normal mode" with all magisk modules disabled.
That "source" link is from the Magisk github and has a "manual disable/uninstall of all modules" method using adb as well.

OK, I will check these things out and report back. I believe I flashed TWRP and the patched Magisk image but maybe I didn't do the original boot image. The problem with the one suggestion is I don't see a 1+ image at all, it just stays on the warning screen forever. I do have advanced boot or whatever turned on I believe where it gives Me more options when holding the power button, provided I can get into the OS but that's not the case. I will try to just hold the volume down when I see the warning screen.
Correction: I see a 1+ logo but no matter what I did, any button combination or booting in with the power button after getting into Safe mode, none of these things did anything but bring Me to the same screen...

Jesus Christ! All I had to do was use the original boot image and push it using fastboot? Omg. I'm in My phone now lol. I can't believe it was that simple. I'm sure I original I didn't do this because I thought that it would erase everything or do something dire but apparently everything is still here... wow. Thanks man, I really appreciate it! Now do I re-boot the Magisk patched image through fastboot or do I uninstall modules first or what?

I've never ran into any Magisk issues before so I don't know what to tell you from this point on. I'd like to say that you can probably go into Magisk manager and disable/delete your modules, but I don't know enough about the inner workings of Magisk.
You should probably back up all your data at this stage before you do anything further lol

Will do, thanks. Do you know if OnePlus Switch transfers APKs or Data? I just want the data and I already used it from My S10+ and wonder if it will be confused by files that already exist or create duplicates. What's the best way to back up if Google keeps saying it's waiting to backup.

I'm not sure about 1+ Switch since I've never used it before.
Check this post for an app others have used.

Don't mean to revive this post at random but I've been really busy lately. I just wanted to update:
I could only turn the phone on by Fastboot and I didn't have much on the phone so I just wiped the device but your help definitely let Me get into the OS and back/upload/see if there was anything I wanted or needed so I really appreciate it. I'll definitely donate when I can, I'm grateful for your help!

It's great that you posted the final result. Not enough people do this IMO.
Sorry some of the suggestions didn't really work out, but at least you could get back into the phone without complete loss of data.
No need for donations; I'm just an enthusiast/ordinary user wanting to help!

S5e won't boot

I am at a loss here. After almost 2 years of working flawlessly, my s5e won't boot.
The screen got frozen while using anydesk, and had to force a restart (power button + up and fown volume buttons).
I can see the Samsung logo for less than a second, and then it switches off. Without touching anything, after some seconds the same thing happens.
I tried charching it and similar behaviour: i see charging circle for less than a second, and off again.
I AM AT A LOSS.
I managed to boot it pressing power+volume_up buttons and this is what i see (attached). It can stay like that for a long time so I guess battery and it's connection to the tablet are fine.
PLEASE ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY WELCOME
UPDATE:
I have tried MANY things in the 6 hours since I wrote this post. I am able to put the tablet in download mode and ODIN (and my PC) recognizes it. I am able to flash VBMETA but now TWRP (fail).
At some point the tablet rebooted in normal mode (why?) but got frozen again and had to reboot it.
Anyone can point me to how to recover it? I don't mind right now to loose what is in the internal memory.
Did you try to hard reboot (power_button + volume_down ) for more than 9 seconds.
If did not work then you may have to charge the phone? If its fully charged try to flash stock rom using Odin. When your device does not boot that means the stock firmware is corrupted and needs to be flashed again. That happened to me before and now my phone is working fine. Wanna know how to flash it? Look it up online!

I did try a hard reboot. Same result. I already rooted and installed a custom rom on it (first thing i did).
Twrp is installed but I'm unable to boot to it.
Any more ideas?

It just loads the screen attached in my first post.
Try flash via Odin, it still in download mode with this warning.
The tablet was still covered by warranty so I called the seller and they took it to a Samsung repair store. They replaced the motherboard, so I guess it was not recoverable.
The bad news is that they updated to android 11, I was quite happy with old 9.0 because I had TWRP and Magisk working.
Thank you for all that tried to help.
