Charging speed - OnePlus 7 Pro Real Life Review

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the OnePlus 7 Pro can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

The battery life could be better, but the charging speed is amazingly fast!

The charging speed is tremendous fast.

Fast as hell (fist charge after factory here starting at 13%, end at 94%) - much much faster compared with Galaxy note 8 and my ancient Sonny z5p.. a beast (btw, as advertised - no heating at all - at around 27c room temp)

I get about 5,2 A using the stock charger

Mine too. 90% in 1 hour. 20mins 91-100%.

No.
0 to 50% in 20m. That's it. It's not 50% in 20m.
BTW, at least half a dozen tests on YouTube. Pretty easy to confirm.

My battery heats up to 42 degrees C while warp charging, and I don't like that; the upper threshold for LI-Ion bateries where damage starts to occur is at around 45 degrees , and it's way too close for comfort.
Luckily I have my handy-dandy dash charger from op3t and I'm using that for now. It charges at 3.4A until 80% and after that it's identical to the warp charge; and the best part, it doesn't go higher than 36 C.
If you do a quick math, 80% of 4000mah is 3200 so, in almost an hour the phone is at 80%, that means it takes around half an hour to get to 40%. I can live with that difference at the cost of keeping my battery in shape.

Most recently I came from a Moto G6 that has rapid charge and I thought it was pretty good. One Plus p7 stock charger kicks A** fastest charge I've ever had!!

Wonder if charges faster in airplane mode? That's I've always charged all my phones when I NEED that quick battery charge

Obviously the less you have in use while charging, the better; that's for any phone. Best speeds achieved when phone is off and you're charging.
My experience has been great. Realize also for battery protection that once the Li-Ion battery gets to 80%, it purposefully slows the charge rate down.

Could be better? Try out an iPhone XS Max for just one day and you want to die. It needs like 3 hours to fully charge and Apple users are okay with that.

Ooops, I meant the battery life

Charging speed chart + temperature
I created two simple charts presenting the charging speed with WARP Charge and without where the second chart shows the temperature rise during charging. During both measurements the phone was switched on without any restrictions (e.g. background processes were running normally, Wi-Fi and BT were on, etc.). I pointed out the peak temperatures on the temperature chart. The "standard charging" means that the phone was charged with a standard 12 W charger (5 V / 2,4 A). I hope that some of you guys will find it useful.

I wonder why some users can charge their 7 Pro within 60 Minutes from 0-100% (saw many YouTubers), whereas others (like me) need 80 minutes to charge it from 0-100.
Even when the phone is powered off.

I haven't tried going from 0%. I can't resist putting a little charge on it if it gets below 30% or so.
I do think the only thing faster than this that I've personally experienced was the mate 20 pro.

For me it's the same, 0-35% in 20 minutes, 0-50% in 30 minutes, 0-100% in 80 minutes

I have got a usb type c to type c 3.1 gen 1 cable. heard that, usb power delivery 15W (5V *3A) is enabled in one plus 7 pro. So I tried connecting op7pro to my laptop's thunderbolt 3 port.. but, charging speed was around 1700mAh only, as compared to expected 3000mAh.
Warp charge is lightning quick! Often reads 5850mAh!!
Any thoughts on this?

Very slow charging when the screen is on

Has anybody noticed that if you have the screen on, the battery charges extremely slowly.
I've noticed that w the screen on using gsam, the battery is only being charged at 500mah whereas if the screen is off, it is being charged at 2200mah.
I get it that the phone will charge slower w the screen on, but it shouldn't be this bad.
Here's a screenshot, you can see that I started charging a little before 4pm and after 50 min it only charged aroudn 10%.
Once I turn the screen off it will start charging very fast. But it shouldn't be charging this slowly w the screen on.

Last night (the first time I charged it) my battery did not charge at all when the screen was on. It was a straight flat line. I was using the stock charger, and the lock.screen showed it was in rapid charge. It was perplexing.
I did not experience this today when I charged it.
So today when u had the screen on, the battery was being charged quickly?
Can u install gsam battery monitor and check your mah?
I want to know whether my phone or charger is defective or is it normal.
I've noticed the same thing. Battery was down to 15% when I got off work yesterday. I left the screen on, plugged it into my car (which should be a rapid charge), and streamed some youtube videos via Bluetooth.
Got home 45 mins later and the phone had charged to 18%
Thanks I can't believe none of the reviews mentioned this.
This is a deal breaker for me. I use my phone all the time plugged in. If it's barely charging then that's not acceptable.
So I let my phone charge for 30min w the screen off and it charged 55%, which is great but I need it to charge faster w the screen on.
This was the exact reason I returned my g4 back when it was new. Hardly anyone else seemed to have an issue with this, but I use it in my car all the time so it was a huge deal to me. Maybe it's the 808? I wonder if the 6p has the same problem since it's a different soc
I hope the 6p doesn't have this issue because if it does I'm switching to the iPhone.
It's inexcusable that Google would let something like this get past qa.

Thanks. I'm hoping i just have a defective charger or phone battery.
Maybe the battery is reporting incorrect temp.
This happens if I'm just doing regular browsing. The back of the phone doesn't feel hot at all.

whenever I game, I typically plug in, so if my battery is not charging very much thats a big deal.
I'm hoping I have a defective battery or charger, but I would like to get input from others to see if they are experiencing the same issue.
Again, never had this problem with any other nexus device. Only the 5x. Have a 6p on order, will test that out when I get it.

If you're gaming then the phone is thermal throttling, if you're throttling then the phone will slow down charge speeds to protect the battery. That sounds like normal operation to me.
No one likes to hear this but you honestly shouldn't be gaming while charging the battery as high heat while charging degrades it. Situations like gaming or GPS navigation in a hot car can be some of the hottest scenarios for a phone.
Lastly, the faster a phone charges the more heat it produces. I've instantly noticed how plugging in a 5x it heats up much quicker and faster than the N5 because it is charging up to 3000mA per second. LG and Google both know that faster charging is already degrading the battery faster (a trade of between speed and longevity) and have more than likely put in safety precautions to protect it from heat exposure during that time.
You can hear it directly from Google as well:
Battery lifespan, charging & usage tips
2. Keep it cool
Avoid situations where your device can overheat. Your battery will drain much faster when it's hot, even if you're not using it, and this can even damage your battery. Bear in mind that your device warms up when it's plugged in, so try not to keep it charging all the time.

I don't mind if it charges slower like maybe 1000mah, but it's charging at less than 500mah even if I'm just browsing or just idling w the screen on.
I think I must have defective battery or charger.

I'm wondering if there's a conditioning period. First charge, flat line with screen on. Second charge, projected time to fill was a touch over 3 hours. Third time, under 90 minutes... Coming from the 1-2% range each time.

OK briefly tried out this. I turned off wifi and plugged in Nx, started up Order and Chaos 2(which will drain my N10 pretty quick and charger just slows down the drain). I played for 2-3 mins and I charged from 91-95%. I don't think that Netflix (which I stream on way home from work) will be more intensive.
I have been driving and charging, while streaming, for years. Personally don't think I have hurt any of my phones. Although I am no expert so who knows.

Nexus 6P Not charging rapidly

Is anyone else not seeing charging rapidly with their stock charger?
No, I saw rates of 1500ma with a 2.4 amp car charger, usb a to c cable (screen showed rapidly charging). I also saw rates of 2400ma with the stock charger usb c to c cable (screen showed rapidly charging). I am guessing my battery was not drained enough to see higher charge rates.
I think your phone needs to be like 50% charge or less to really see the benefits of quick charge.

It was at 15% when I tried it. I have the stock charger and the Google 2 port 22.5w charger. I was plugged into the 2 port charger, but tried the stock charger for a minute. I may have had to leave it on the stock charger longer. Otherwise non "rapid" charging still took less than 2 hours from 15% to 100%.

I tried to edit my title I know it's not quick charge, but you can see youtube reviews where their phone shows "Charing Rapidly" on the lock screen and not just "charging". The phone can take up to 15W from the Type C port.
I tried the stock charger when the phone was at 60% and it varied between 1 and 2 amps. I'm going to run another test when the battery is lower. Sucks though because I typically try not to drain it that much.
Ok, I started charging with the stock 6p charger at 26%. I'm now at 74%. This charger does not ramp up in a linear fashion like other lithium-ion chargers that I'm familiar with. It's constantly ramping up and down over and over. The highest it's achieved was 2.8 amps for a few seconds and I would guess it may be averaging maybe 1 to 1.5 amps.
I'm wondering if it's even working to spec. Seems to me it ought to slowly ramp up to 3 amps, hold it, and then slowly ramp down at about 90%.
Anyone else monitored their charge rate?
Update: It took about 90 mins to go from 26% to 93%.
That sounds faulty. I can do that with a A->C setup in an hour. The google charger should be somewhat faster (40 minutes? Based on 2A vs 3A).

Load ampere from the play store and watch the charge rate. I wonder if it's just mine that has this very strange charge curve.
Glad I'm not going crazy. Coming from a Galaxy S6, I wasn't expecting the fast charge on this to be that slow.
From 46% to full on the stock fast charger supplied with the phone, it took an 1 hour 3 mins.
From 46% to full on my Anker IQ 71AN7105 which is supposed to output at 5V, 2.3 Amps, it took 1 hour 20 mins.
Both said the phone was "charging rapidly" when I plugged it in.
Just measured on the Anker, and it's showing charging rate at 640-790ma. So you're doing a lot better than I am! No wonder it's taking an age to charge!!!!
That's like normal non-fast charge surely.
I don't trust ampere to be honest.. charging current is supposed to vary but not the amount it's showing. I wonder if it's showing charging minus load, so having the screen on will make it give incorrect results, as will the various CPU sleep states, wifi, 3G, etc.
The real world test of time from x% to 100% or how many % in 30 minutes is somewhat better in that it's measuring the end result. I'll try to do that. (/me switches rob ross on twitch to drain some battery).

A typical charging curve is shown below. The shapes of the curves might vary some by battery and circuit, but in general a battery will draw full current (up to some limit) for a period of time and then the current draw will steadily decline. This is normal. A battery will charge from 0%-30% much faster than from 70%-100%. Beyond allowing 3A to the battery, there appears to be no "fast charging" technique employed by the 6P.
The real key is what is the charger actually outputting? This should be tested by an instrument, not the phone. If, for example, the charger is outputting 2.9A and the phone is 10% charged and only drawing your 700mA there is probably an issue OR the power control is limiting current for some valid reason. Maybe the battery temperature.

I was expecting a curve like this but it was a roller coaster starting at 26%. I expect the charger is putting out because I measured a momentary blip of 2.8 amps.
As was mentioned, Ampere may be part of the problem but I don't have other tools other than a simple time to full calculation. Do we even have specs as to what's that supposed to be?
OK here are the results I got:
Both started at 10%, with identical settings (although on different days, can't help that). Normal working settings.. I avoided having the display on except for checks and it was sat still so allowed to doze.
Code:
30 Mins 60 Mins 75 Mins Total Time
USB A 47% 81% 92% 93 mins
USB C 50% 85% 95% 82 mins
And expressed as % per minute
Code:
30 Mins 60 Mins 75 Mins To full
USB A 1.23 1.13 0.73 0.40
USB C 1.35 1.16 0.66 0.71
So, C (well, google's charger and cable) is around 15% faster for me* than A.
Around 90% charging visibly slows to a crawl on both methods. The first 80% or so are fast, but interestingly C gains most at the end as it doesn't slow down as much.
Edit: If you ignore the timings at the bottom, it looks very similar to the example graph posted. Which is expected I guess.
* YMMV, standard disclaimers, etc.
one thing to note is that the phone will also charge slower if your screen is on and generating additional heat. The phone will throttle the charging rate based on the temperature of the battery.
So while it's 15% faster, the battery capacity is more than 25% larger. So how is the real gain achieved?
I'm thinking that the google charger isn't sending 3A anyway.. You'd expect more difference even if my normal charger is going as high as 2.4A (and I'm not sure it goes that high without QC). USB C might be capable of it but this phone/charger combination isn't.

I concur.
I don't particularly want to go over old ground regarding my H870DS, but I have three QC 3.0 chargers, the charger that comes with the G6, and my QC 2.0 charger from my Z2 tablet, all of them charge my G6 at the same speed - 1% a minute. But what is more interesting, is that all of the QC 3.0 charger I have, are backward compatible, and they all charge my G5 a lot faster than my G6. 0 to 70% on the G6 takes around 1 hour 10 mins, the G5 takes 40 minutes for the same percentages. Something is clearly amiss!
Exactly this same experience. LG calls it “fast charging“: indeed it is, but it isn't QC3.
For me not a deal breaker, just my observation(s) only.
QC3 isn't any faster than QC2 the only difference is qc3 is more energy efficient which means it can change the voltage on the fly.
QC2 can't do this an excess energy is expelled as heat when the battery reaches near full capacity. QC3 can adjust the voltage to prevent this energy loss.
QC3 is likely better for the battery as it doesn't generate as much heat but it's no faster than QC 2.

No.
By definition of the USB-C specifications QC QuickCharge is not allowed. Thats why Goolge says that they shall not include QC into their phones but USB-PD (and yes, as it seems the G6 also has PowerDelivery).
I think it is more futuree-proof to buy a charger with USB-C PD and in some jears we can use it for all kind of stuff like phones, tablets, laptops etc

96% at 1 hour 22 minutes. I couldn't record the 100% time due to busy time.
Main thing this time did was
NEVER TURN ON SCREEN... NOT EVEN ONE TIME IN BETWEEN.

Does Quick Charge or Fast Charging support on this device?

Hey guys, I wanna buy this phone but I have question about charging, does it support quick charge or just fast charging only? Thanks
I Saw Geekyranjits very detailed Faq video.. He said it Supports only 5v/2a charger speed.. he tested it with fast charger but it charged Normally as stock charger speed ... here's the link to his video...

The phone only supports fast charging for now. The bundled charger is a 2A and 10 Watts one. It takes about 2 hour 40 minutes to charge.
But the chipset does support Qualcomm quickcharge 4.0. Yet we don't know if the board supports it. If it also supports it, maybe ASUS will enable it via an OTA update. But its very rare in such cases and if they don't release an OTA, probably you would find a supported kernel and custom ROM here.
If the board doesn't support QC 4.0, then don't worry. You won't get it anywhere. Probably, that's why there is no QC supported charger provided by ASUS.
Mine takes almost 7hours to charge. When I check using ampere it shows only 900mA max of input rate. But I think there is no any problem with my charger because it's normal when I use it to my other phone. Anyone has the same issue? I've been using any method that everyone suggest in some forum but it ended up in no change at all.

I too had same problem though mine took 5 hrs to charge . Then I found out that if all apps were closed then it only took around 3hrs to charge. Ampere app shows 1500mA .

If I turned the phone off it took almost 6 hours from 10% to fully charged. I think it's abnormal.

No need to turn off mobile , simply switch off data and wifi.
What's with this charging issue for everyone.
Also like take 5 hours to charge full battery.
2 hours only chargers from 10-45%
Charging problem
My Zenfone Max pro m1 needed 4 hours to charge from 70% to 100%....!
Mine only takes about 2 hours to go from 10% to around 80-90%. the charger first says "Charging slowly" then within 2-3 mins it will say "Charging" and then within 3-4 mins it will say "Charging Rapidly" and then it only takes about 2 hours to charge 80-90% with the bundled charger. I don't know if a better charger would increase the outcome but lets see.

I have a MI Quick charger,
and i use it always from the day One of using this phone,
Previously it used to take the same time as the bundled charger,
but after the last / August 2nd update, i can see some sort of quick charging working,
Because i never saw charging rapidly on the lock screen before this update,
and as per my observation, 5% - 80% takes approx 2 hrs (Quick charge way), and slows down there after,
i haven't tested with the original bundled charger after this update though,
Will share the screenshots after testing.
Fast Charging working
Yes the phone supports fast charging can see from the screenshot
The bundled charger supplied with the phone is rated 5V/2A/10W which supports QC 1.0
Asus ZMP M1 runs on SD636 which theoretically supports QC 4.0. But it is not implemented at kernel level (probably due to licensing costs payable to QC which will raise the cost of the phone)
So effectively, fast charging is not supported on stock kernel. (And I may entirely be wrong !)
Here are the screenshots,
This one with 2 hours and 34 minutes (5% - 100%) is with the Mi quick charger 3.0 charger.
And this one with the 3 hour (17% - 99%) is with the bundled charger.
Anything above 1A can be called fast charging. So 5V/2A can be called fast charging. Although it is assumed that if device supports 9V and 12V then this indicates QC level fast charging.
A more accurate comparison and result can be obtained from Ampere app. You can use any charger but the phone will draw only that much power which is supported by the board. Also, many things affect the charging time e.g. length of the charging cable, heat dissipation by the charger etc.
Please suggest me a charger bcz my stock charger is damaged.

Would you please suggest me a good fast Charger for Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 because my stock charger is damaged and the service centre is refused to replace it because of a small crack on the charger case.
Or
Can i buy the Mi Quick charge 3.0 instead of a fast charger.? Can i charge my phone with the quick charger 3.0 safely? Is the Mi 5V 2A charger is same as the Asus stock charger? Because asus stock charger not available to buy from online. It is only available in service centre and also need to wait a while.

Charging speed

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the Google Pixel 3 can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The Pixel and Pixel 2 used to charge "fine" through a PC port. The pixel 3 charges extremely slowly. For example my Pixel 2 would be at 50% battery and using the USB port on my car it would be close to 90% when I got home. Under the same situation, the Pixel 3 would only be at 55%. Same problem using the PC port. I know I know it's NOT supposed to be fast charge but I am only stating the facts and differences. Stock charger charges fine.
Pixel 3 charges very slowly on my existing 2.4A (per port) multi usb charger. Clearly it's not a PD charger, but it always provided enough juice for my nexus 5x to charge quickly. Clearly the pixel 3 doesn't like it.
Can confirm this also. Ampere indicates that it pulls less than 200mA on any non-USB type C charger. This is different from my previous Pixel 2.
With Samsung fast wireless charger, s9 goes from 20%to 100 in less than 2 h, pixel 3 charged only 25% in 2 h....... Charging speed is awfull if you don't use Google chargers

Something is not right there. I see around 1000 mA with an old 1.0A charger and around 1300 mA with various 2.4A ones. Even with 'slow' wireless I see 500-600 mA

With Nov security update. No improvements. It charges fine with pd charger but insanely slow with any other.
My Pixel 3 charges plenty fast for me. Although, I typically use my Dell Latitude 20v (45W) PD charger.

I'm not an expert at this stuff and certainly might be missing something but charging at 1000mA from a 1A charger should be physically impossible. Wouldn't that be 100% efficiency?
Yup.. Charging is too slow.. Infact, the charging time estimated (which is shown on the lock screen when the phone is being charged) is also wrong.. May be it gets adjusted over time...

The estimate is adjusted over time. To my knowledge, all fast charge technologies are able to charge much quicker when the battery is low, but then slow the charge down as the battery approaches a fully charged state/heats up. The estimate would simply be a guess, since they likely are, app status, ambient temperature and battery condition dependent.
This can be seen in the graph on xda's quick charging comparison. Note that all the technologies start out quite fast but eventually taper off. Also note that USB-PD is the slowest (most conservative) of the technologies after the battery gets to about %40 charge.
https://www.xda-developers.com/charging-comparison-oneplus-huawei/
I would add that my new pixel 3 does appear to charge a little slower than some of my previous devices, however I've got several devices that use USB-PD so the versatility of USB-PD and ability to use one charger across my devices more than makes up for the extra 30 minutes or so of cellphone charge time. Guess everyone's expectations are different.
"Fast charging" on the Pixel is via Power Delivery. This is only possible over USB-C; PD can negotiate higher charging rates by increasing the voltage. This is not possible with PC type A ports; type A is rated for 5v, 3a max.
Qualcomm Quick Charge does adjust voltage and uses type A ports, but it uses the data pins for rate negotiation, while PD uses pins unique to USB-C.

No. The charger is able to deliver 1000mA, but the total power delivered to the device will be less than it draws from the mains supply (the difference wasted as heat).

Exactly. Google has really messed up the charging speed. Pixel2 used to be fine with usb ports. Pixel3 charges faster only with stock charger with which it came.

Yeah, that's what I thought but the comment I replied to said it was charging at 1A from a 1A charger. I would expect maybe 800mA from a 1A charger.

Yeah idk if I just mixed up my numbers (I had been testing multiple charges) or what. Tried again and it averaged more around 600

The phone doesn't like to charge fast if the battery tempeturature is "high" (higher than 35 ºC). It's just a very agressive charge trhottle. Try charging again but in a colder weather or room.
It was my experience.
The charger that comes with the phone is not fast charger?
Got my phone yesterday and when I charged it, it said it's slow charging....
Edit
Second charge was fast charge according to info on screen.
After Dec update, the PC port charging is normal, not rad, not slow but normal. Problem fixed.

I felt similar way until today. But today at around 20% battery I put my Pixel 3 at Pixel Stand and have got that:

I already posted regarding strange behavior of wireless charging: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78315849&postcount=73:
Before I've got original Pixel Stand, I used generic wireless charger. No surprises, it chargers P3 slowly. But there is more. Sometimes it doesn't charge P3 at all. Way more strange, that almost the same behavior I have with Pixel Stand. After some days I began to suspect there is a regularity - the charge at full speed works with at least 85% of charge at phone. If the charge is lower, the possibility the charge would be at rapid speed is pretty low. It can claim it charges rapidly, but in fact it doesn't charge at all, since the charge is going down at the same rate as phone out of any charging. I definitely have relatively small statistics and can not say for sure that 85% is a "red line" for triggering wireless charge start (regardless of speed in my case). Today even at 91% phone battery wireless charging at Pixel Stand didn't start at all (with "charging rapidly" announcement at screen and slowly discharging phone). Other functions of Stand work pretty good regardless of what's going on with charging. I didn't contact Google Customer Service since the results are unstable.

In case of regular charging through the USB-C cable from native Pixel charger I've never had any problems. But wireless charging even with original Pixel Stand doesn't look good. At the generic charger even after Dec update charging goes south - not charging at all or with original Google wireless charger just like at screenshot - rapid charging in day and a half. It's better, than no charge, but for $79.99 for original Pixel Stand it has to be faster.
