Question: Updating memory for Apps to SD.

Hey, atm while i was learning more about the G1, I kept the 1 GB in there. I now want to know more about the installing apps to SD part of it. 1st off after I get a memory card. (Which btw I saw I can get a 2 GB model. How do I know if its good? Sandisk work ok or do I need a SDHC or no?
Also after applying the fix that does apps to SD. Would that mean anything I install from the market after that point auto installs to the SD? Also is it worth it? Right now I was comfortable installing to the internal memory this way I could unmount the SD card and not worry about something going horribly wrong that needed access or so. (I like to know about things I do to my phone before doing it.)
Anyways just wanted to get some info on this a lil more and know if its worth it so I can continue looking into it and how to do it. Thanks. =)
1. I'm not sure about sandisk, but the one i use (Transcend) works just fine. I'm not really that too good with sdcard specs lol...
2. Yep, every app you install from the market will be installed to your sdcard. Well, to me, it's really worth it because you can get more apps and not really have to bother with that low memory warning... I also think it removes some lag lol
Ok sounds good, so to confirm, I DO 100% need a 2 GB at least to use? How do I know if its the right type tho?
Also my current apps, is there a way to move them over easy enough or do I need to wipe my phone and reinstall everything from scrath? ( One of the reasons I avoided this since I really did not want to lose a couple of these apps since they are older ones and not "Trial" or they were removed, or just hard to track what I did have)

From what I've read, you only need 500 megs of space on ext partition. More than that, and it'll lag a little bit.
I actually have my sd partitioned 6gb/2gb fat32/ext2 respectively.
A class 6 sd card (you can tell by the small number in the corner... no number, probably a class 2 then) is recommended, but I am using a class 4.
If you put music and video on your sd, I would recommend going with a 4gb or higher card.
So where does it install the apps to? EXT2? So normally you only wanna have 500 megs on ext2?
But 1 GB wouldnt be worth doing this right?
Also any news on if I can move all my apps to it or if it had to be reinstalled?
Also how do you really go about finding a app that is no longer on the market but yet has updates for?

I wouldnt use a 1gb card, but thats because I like to put music and videos on my phone.
All applications downloaded after you create the symbolic link to install applications on sd will be installed on the ext2 partition.
Everytime you wipe (factory reset) your user data, only a few commands are needed to restore the symbolic link. So, no you won't need to reinstall your apps (your unprotected apps anyways).
I would use atrackdog to find apps that arent on the market but have updates
Apps to sd
here ya go dude
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468959&highlight=(modded)+apps+sd
just follow these instructions, theyre the ones i used.
If you don't know how to use, or setup ADB, then at the bottom there are some instructions to use terminal emulator
Hope this helps
well I use atrackdog. But are you saying I should just use that to reinstall them? Most of my apps are from the market except for some. However while it says it has a update for a app, when I goto the market its no longer there some of the apps.
You wont lose the apps... no need to worry about that, it doesnt affect what apps you have, it just simply moves all the files from the apps to your sdcard... the only thing removed or changed will just probably be a theme and thats it lol...
cool. After that, I assume I would need to turn off the phone to take the card out and add files to it? Also if I wanted to "upgrade" the card later on, how would one move the files over? Use Linux to transfer the files directly to the other SD card or what?
Atrack will sometimes track beta testing versions that are only available to testers, so you wont always be able to utilize atrack dog to install updates.
Trust me, if you like downloading and trying out apps, you'll be glad you made the switch
Woot, I did it, Using a Kingston 2 GB
I updated to the JFvMOD by LucidREM, which I assume I had to do 1st for the SD apps right? Then I did the copy apps and data, seems everything converted over correctly, so Im happy about that, finally have workable space again and my G1 doesnt force close anymore due to lack of space.
Now come some other questions. I know in Linux I can access the memory card with a adapter to put files on. However in windows, how will this work? If I use usb will it only read the fat32 partition or will it try to read both? I know when I plugged it in by a adapter directly, WinXP acts like it doesnt see the memory card. It knows one is there, but it wants to format it. (Which I dont, granted odd since I do have the mod on WinXP that lets me see EXT3 partions)
Now the bigger question. When JF updates his regular version (Whenever G1 updates) will I be required to wait for THIS modded version to be updated before continuing or how does that all work for updates now? I used to know with the regular one but now that I use a mod of a mod version. Kinda confused where I stand. Heh.
But yes, so far I am happy I made the switch, got 58 megs free of internal heh. (I assume thats correct on a normal thing?)
Also later on with new apps etc, will they try to use internal memory or will EVERYTHING run to the SD card now? (How do you even check the EXT2 free space now? Astro or what?) If it does use internal, do I need to somehow do regular transfers over to the SD?
Anyways I know alot of questions, but least after this Ill have a better understanding how to keep proceeding. Thanks. =)

Future WP7 Build Ideas

I hope Microsoft reads this, but I hope the developers can accomplish this, here are some ideas:
Have WP7 use internal memory for its main functions/rom, make the SD card available for programs, games, music, photos, videos etc...
This whole "making the sd as part of the phone" or striping data accros is way too sensitive. As I already experienced, this striping is very sensitive and the chain can easily be broken [as with a raid0(striping) storage system on a PC].
Also a ledgable partition to the os would be a plus (fat32, ntfs or even ext).
With this method the data on the sd card does not get lost each time the phone malfunctions/the storrage system gets disconected.
This is one of the major negative points with wp7, otherwise I really like it a lot, even for my business it just seems easier and better to navigat than wm 6.5.x.
What are other peoples thoughts??
Can the developer (if Microsoft refuses) accomlplish that???
P.s. Let me know ifmy threads are in the wrong Forum, but I thought both threads are valid ponts in regards to development and WP7 nand/rom issues.
OK, sorry for that, but I think maybe this one should be in the Q&A section??
If we get a future build that is
Usefull features
I do agree WP7 works great on HD2. There are some issues I would like to raise though:
1. I was unable to add custom TTF Fonts, like in WM6.5 to be able to read in Georgian.
2. Interactive USSD Feature does not work. That is, you can enable certain features that operator provides through *xxx# combination. I do not know if that works in original WP&, but in DFT release when the interactice menu comes up, the keyboard is locked, so there is no way to choose the desired option.
If anyone know answer to either issue please reply.
I dont think its a really big deal and it works the way they want it to, its almost like a hard drive that is built for the phone only. Microsoft will be releasing an updated WP7 that even includes the copy paste fuction. Maybe they can include the ability to send contacts, but since WP7 isnt open source I do not see any customization if much at all happening.
Except all the known issues, i'd like to have 2 improvement on the keyboard;
-Make the keyboard larger, there is some unused space on the right and left side of the keyboard.
-I'd like the keyboard to vibrate when buttons are pushed
i dont really think MS will see this
if you do want to give feedback find Windows phone on facebook or twitter where they have posted a short questionnaire and feedback box thats the place to do it
i dont really care about the SD card. Its one thing less to buy after you buy it. And this way you wont have any issues with damaging the card.
Windows Phone 7 wasnt designed for removable SD cards. It was intended for real internal storage though manufacturers went cheap for the first gen which is quite disappointing as if they used normal flash storage i think the performance would have been far better and the whole over blown deal with the SD card thing wouldn't have existed in the first place

I agree. 16gb of internal nand storage would be awesome and more reliable. An extra sd card would be cool also just so one can quickly copy/read pics and docs etc wihout having to install zune software.
ive been having quite a few major issues with WP7. its a shame because i do like it.
The main one being that every now and again it will restart by itself but sometimes it will do kind of a "hard reset" where everything goes back to factory settings, however if you restart it, it will go back to normal. i dont know if thats something to do with the SD card or something else??

This happened to me until I changed my SD card...
Well, I changed sd card and tried without. A full factory reset did the trick though. Seems like something weired is going on with the internal storage (I did a factory reset flashing from sd card).
My biggest concerns about wp7
1- No Copy and Paste
2- No fast multitask (like alt+tab)
3- No T9 dialpad
But the biggest is:
4- NO GOOGLE CONTACTS GOOD SYNC. Many of my contacts have multiple cellphones, and WP7 (also wm6.x) doesn't recognize them... Does anyone have an workaround?
5- Few medical apps (no Skyscape, Epocrates, or offline Uptodate...)
6- No apps folder...
Hope MS is watching this post!

[q] apps and games i have saved on my sd card are not being read on my phone

applications and games ive downloaded and moved to my sd card are not showing in my list of applications. i can not use them at all with the few ways i tried. i cant download apps from the market i hit ok n it doesnt do anything. i cant uninstall apps. i cant install apps ive acquired from other sites. when i go into manage applications and click on any and "all apps" that are saved on my sd card n "on my phone" it will not show the memory used it will just show computing for everything in data and cache. i have learned that if i remove my memory card all apps that are saved to my phone will delete if if i want to delete them with the exception of preinstalled apps. my phone can download and it shows the memory use of applications in the app manager. i have tried i few tricks like signing into google n deleting data n cache from google apps and it worked, however when i shut my phone off then back on it went back to the same problem. i dont remember exactly the steps i took to get it to work because i did follow the steps but then tried a few other things that i cant recall and my phone worked properly with my sd card installed. now i try the same steps i learned but they are not working. i have no idea what to do. my phone is rooted but thats all i have done, i havent manipulated any files or installed any roms. i have however downloaded a few apps for rooted droids one being autostarts and this is where i think i may have went wrong but im not sure. when i downloaded autostarts i went crazy stopping apps that auto start to save battery life but and i dont know if i may have stopped something critical to my phone functioning properly but i cant check because autostarts is saved on my sd card and i my phone wont read apps on my sd card in a way where i can actually use them. so this is my problem i didnt make any back ups i dont want to reformat my sd card or buy a new sd card i dont think that will solve my problem anyway i dont want to wipe my phone because theres just too much on my phone. i just need to learn what i can do to fix this problem. please help n if u can ill buy you a gift on amazon and have it shipped to you or donate to this site if i knew how to do that lol... ill will attach a text doc showing the steps i took that worked for my phone but stopped working after i turned off my phone then turned it back on... p.s. it wouldnt work again because i cant delete data and caches from apps the apps memory use stays stuck on computing
I have a droid 2
sorry for all the typos ive been up for awhile
i havent tried this tip yet that i found because i just dont know what effect it will have on my phone...
THE "FOR ROOTED PHONES ONLY" LIST
(if you have to ask what that is, you probably can't/shouldn't do it)
- Delete the file system/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db (or, alternatively, the whole /data/data/com.android.providers.settings directory)
- Add an entry to the HOSTS file at system/etc/hosts for android.clients.google.com (IP address for the entry varies per location, I'm in the US and used 74.125.93.113 -- this seems to primarily address proxy issues, which may be encountered by wireless users in China)
this is in the txt.doc i posted. i only did the tips listed under easy list in the txt doc
i think im going to try removing my sd card clearing the data for all the google apps then putting my sd card back in and see if that helps.
nope didnt work... also just a side note when i go into manage applications then click "on sd card" i can see my apps there with no icon logos next to its title but again i cant see its data usage and cache its stuck on computing and i cant see my apps that are installed on my sd card in my list of apps i can only see that the apps are still there when i go into manage applications then click "on sd card"
ok well i was getting really frustrated considering new non android smarthphones new service providers the works lol then i thought for a moment and said hmm maybe i just have to many apps and games saved directly to my phone and my poor phone cant handle anymore. so i removed my sd card turned on my phone and started deleting a few apps to give my phone more memory. i then again turned off my phone inserted my sd card turned on my phone and viola the phone is working properly again. i was binge eating downloads never once considering the memory on my phone smh poor phone lol well i lost the weight and my phone feels great. thanx me hopefully this will help someone else in the future.
smh im still having the same problems i dont event think it was a memory issue because simply deleting content doesnt even get my phone to read my sd card properly can anyone help
smh posting on this site was completely useless just like androids app dependent os
holy novenary post, batman. did you try sbf/factory reset or formatting the sd card?
yup factory reset n still had the same problem, and format sd card heck no are u crazy are u so completely senile youve lost all grasp of reality lol what i did do is put a knew sd card ran everything as normal removed the memory card deleted smdl2tmp1.asec file then installed the memory card ran everything as usual removed that memory card and replaced it with my original memory card with all files in the .asec folder deleted n now it has been working fine.
i think its so awesome that this site can teach you in detail how to void ya warranty in every way but for any actual real maintenance recovery n repair questions its all thumbs
knew = new lol

sd problem in kitkat

Since receiving the kitkat update OTA my sd card has completely vanished, can't view anything on there or save anything to it. I know this is a new thing that Google has brought in but it's a bit annoying seeing a lot of my work is saved to the sd card along with family pics etc.
Can anyone advise me on a way to fix it so that I can save to the sd card as well as view what is on there?
At the moment the phone is completely stock but I am willing to root etc (again) to get the full use out of the phone until (if) Google remove this new plan to get us all using cloud.

Thanks for that! I don't mind rooting etc to get it working, only really want it as the storage on my phone is basically full and I use the camera a lot for my tattoo work etc so try using the card to save the phones memory, easily transport it into pc's etc and be able to view everything on my phone as and when needed, helps for a bit of advertising if people ask for a look at a portfolio then I've always got some work on hand at all times. Hopefully Google will change their way and then I'll happily unroot again as I don't really need the phone rooted or custom roms etc, I keep that all on my old s2 that my son plays with now
Update...I gave that link a try, rooted the phone using cf root and then tried the app, unfortunately sd card still not showing so still can't view what's stored to it so now looking into custom roms until (hopefully) a fix arises or Google change it again

Been trying to do this for two years, still need to use sd card as internal memory

I ran out of storage for new apps a long time ago. My device is kind of useless for new things because there is no internal memory for INSTALLING APPS, even after removing 75% of my apps which includes system apps. There is just no more space. It still has 2gb of internal memory left BUT THAT CANNOT BE USED FOR INSTALLING APPS, stupidly. There are 8GB of total internal storage space.
I have plenty of storage for data. Just not for apps. I have a 32GB SD card as well.
App2SD apps, I maximized all possible data to be moved.
Apps with data larger than 20MB I just deleted the whole apps.
Still no more space.
Additionally, it means I CANNOT use this tablet for things like games, or for storing map data from gopilot live as a backup in case my phone dies. Which is VERY limiting. Especially because I used to like to play games on it but I had to remove all the games to make way for utilities.
Thus I DESPERATELY NEED to be able to install UNLIMITED NUMBER OF APPS using the SD card for internal storage.
I tried the vold.fstab method HERE, but it did not work.
PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU!!!
p.s. I WOULD BUY A NEW TABLET WITH MORE MEMORY BUT NO 7.0 INCH TABLET EXISTS THAT IS BETTER THAN THE TAB 4 BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL MAKING HUGE 8.0 and 8.4 INCH TABLETS THAT ARE TOO BIG SO I AM STUCK WITH THE TAB 4.

i'd say you just need test different apps all over and over akd different methods from XDA, i have on my phone sdcard as internal memory but same method wont work on tab 4..... you should use folder mount to move appdata to sdcard and use it from there, it helps if you have big app data on internal sd card.

No I tried that already. It does Not work because of the error "this has been limited due to kitkat so you're not authorized" or something to that extent. It's not an error, it is a limitation of the kitkat (and all subsequent) operating systems. Google did that on purpose to try to force people to have to upgrade their phone.

Cyanogenmod isn't an extreme solution, it runs better than touchwiz IMO and it takes up significantly less memory, which is a fact. It's more like saying, "I don't like Windows," and the reply being, "You should try out Ubuntu," especially since both cyanogenmod, like Ubuntu, is completely free

Waiting for a real solution to the actual problem.
uh if youre not ready to install different rom i guess theres no solution
I'm having the exact same dilemma. In my case, not going to CM (or another rom/firmware/kernel..) is due to the fact that my children use the tablets, so the KidsMode needs to work. I've looked at that one from Zoodles, and its rubbish compared to the Samsung one available on their Galaxy devices. My original post never had any reply other than my own update.
By the way: I'm still searching for a solution to this... If only Samsung would/could release Marshmallow on this tablet, the Adoptable Storage option could be used...
Now, if you can just hold your breath...
lol I know right...?
Full disclosure: I've given up hope of finding a solution that will work with (essentially) stock 4.4.2, so now I'm looking into how to get the TouchWiz framework to run on a rom/kernel that DOES support support an external/internal swap.
Of course, that does nothing to help the OP, but IMO the best solution has already been presented to him: Install a custom ROM that supports what he needs. It's still the best solution since there don't seem to be any TouchWiz-dependent apps he needs.
Years later still no solution

If you are willing to root your device you can use Apps2sd to actually move(link) whole app into sd card.
You'll need to repartition your sd card to do it, but there are good guides to do it.
EDIT:
Oh it's renamed app2sd but here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd&hl=fi for it
you can also try link2sd app

That's very limited and actually doesn't do anything more than the native android system does already, ever since about 2013 or so

I don't know about how limited it is, but it's completly different than native android moving apps to sd. Linking is like actually increasing your devices internal memory(not really but somethign like that). Also it's easiest/(propably)best way to get more memory for apps.
