[Magisk] MIUI Auto Brightness Fix for Mi 9 - Xiaomi Mi 9 Themes, Apps, and Mods

The idea originally comes from my MIUI Auto Brightness Fix thread in Mi Mix 2s forum. Because i switched device to Mi 9, now i want to make mods for this device brightness too.
My experience with Miui roms, i think everything is fine and acceptable, except for the Auto Brightness! The screen goes very dark in low lights, and ridiculously bright in not-so-bright lights that makes my eyes sore. I never used the auto brightness before. But after I found this mod, then I can using this great feature in miui again. If you experience the same thing, then try this magisk module!
So what this module do? It adds framework-res to the /system/media/theme/default. With a magisk module you can do it systemlessly! To install it, just download the module then browse it in Magisk Manager.
If you dont like my setting values, just unzip my module, find framework-res file, unzip it, then edit the theme_values.xml to any values you want under "config_autoBrightnessLcdBacklightValues", then zip all back
To test if this module works, tap the Kernel Version in About Phone 5 times, then you will enter CIT. Go to num 21 light sensor. Cover your upper phone with your hands till the light sensor DAC reach 0. If the backlight is not going under module lowest value (ex: 80), then this module works! My module limits the minimal auto brightness and change its behavior. Its usually less bright than the stock in medium light condition. There's should be any noticeably difference.
Remember, this mod only works on MIUI-based roms with android pie! Tested working on official MIUI, Xiaomi.eu, Revolution OS.
The download links in attachment.
Guide:
1. Legacy method, using framework-res file. Less compatibilty but safer to update rom and easier to costumize.
V1 : Initial release.
V2: Lower brightness in medium light.
V3: Lower brightness in bright light. Brightness steps added to make it smoother.
V3.1: A bit adjustment to lower brightness in very low light. Lowest backlight value is now 80.
V4: More responsive to light changes. Lower brightness in low light to compensate new lowest 80 value.
V5: For android 10 and backwards. Better and smoother brightness in low light. Doesn't work on dark mode.
V6: for MIUI 12 android 10. Lowest val 160 of new max 4095
2. Alternative method, using modified system overlay apk file. Use this if legacy method doesn't work. Still in testing wheter can survive after rom update.
V3b: take values from v3
V3.1b: take values from v3.1
V4b: take values from v4
V5b: take values from v5. For android 10 only! Works on dark mode. There are some lowest brightness variations (20,40,60,80).
V6b: take values from v6, for MIUI 12 android 10
Notes:
- DON'T activate DC anti flickering mode, it ruins the light sensor to become inaccurate.
- Only V4 and upwards have responsitivity adjustment. More responsive means it needs less light increments to trigger auto brightness adjustment. Android 10 cant use V4 or it wouldn't work.
- Less bright = better battery life plus reducing risk of amoled burn-in.
- Editing the values can cause a mess. Add .disable_magisk file in cache partition if your phone cant boot then uninstall the module in manager.

This was the missing piece with the MI9 experience.
I hate the auto brightness on the MI9
Definitely going to try out.... But I can't download the file?

Yeah dunno why it cant be downloaded. I have added the mirror link

I have installed but it goes down to 19.
I have played around with some third party apps which control auto brightness.
I found that the value max brightness 255 in the app. Is half way in the brightness slider on the MI9

OK? Sounds a bit strange to me? A rom specific mod, while all Roms have the auto brightness with same flaw.
But i am not a developer.....
Hope that there will be another solution then.

Lnlnice thread. I hope u can make a nice contrast and color of screen in mi 9 it also helpful too

I have this mod installed on Xiaomi.eu and works really well.

Really? Have perform cit test? Some eu users report it doesnt work, and some does. I dont know what the causes because i havent tested it on eu.

I did the test and, as dev said, it does not went under 100. Now I'm gonna edit the values.

So this must work in Global Beta?

Should work on any official miui roms. Either beta or stable.

Update! I have uploaded the v2 version. It is dimmer in medium light conditions, which is personally better for me and for the battery life. Check the first post.
Note: no update for compatibility. Still for official miui roms..

[BOUNTY] Manually adjusting autobrightness levels. $60.

I'd like to start this bounty thread with a $50 offering.
The requirement is to hack official HTC Sense roms to be able to set levels of brightness which autobrightness uses.
It could be done via an app, or a file edit, or the way cm6.1 does it. And it should be supported for the future OTA releases.
The only true requirement is that I never have to worry about setting brightness again, after I tweak the brightness values to my own eyes.
(technical: autobrightness adjusts the brightness of the lcd by reading the light level sensor. CM6 allows one to edit the table of brightness vs. light sensor. Sense might implement the autobrightness differently. Regardless of the implementation, the default values of brightness, that autobrightness uses, should be adjustable.)
In for $10

I would like this issue to be fixed as well, but am curious to know how much a table would actually help. It seems that it may not be as bright outside as it is inside sometimes, but the sun reflects light a lot worse than a ton of florescent or artificial light does. When i am inside and all the lights are on, i can still read my phone with the brightness at 15%. But when its cloudy outside it needs to be at 100% or its hard to read from a direct angle. I would almost prefer to leave my brightness at 15% all the time, and then use a hardware switch like hitting both volume rockers together to toggle 100% and 15% to change the brightness.
It would be awesome if the evo used the front facing camera to detect the sky behind you or even use the better light senser in a camera, to detect and adjust the brightness. Probably not great for battery.

How does changing that setting qualify for manually adjusting autobrightness values?
Here's how cm6 does it. It creates a table:
Light Sensor level - Brightness
10 - 50
160 - 60
225 - 70
320 - 80
640 - 110
1280 - 140
2600 - 180
infinity - 255(max)
The autobrightness reads the light sensor level and then sets the brightness to the corresponding brightness value.

Yep.. It's nothing like the note 5 in sunlight
Yes please, even my old S5 is easier to see in direct sunlight.
Yeah it's not great at all in direct sunlight
Wow even if adaptive display on I do not have problems with the screen brightness in sunlight. Maybe I just don't use my phone is direct sunlight as often as I think but I never have to turn my brightness above 50%. I find 100% with adaptive brightness off to be way too bright.
I would not risk any mod to increase brightness it will probably destroy your screen.
I hope this will help ! https://m.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3xexxo/nexus_6p_high_brightness_mode/
Hello everyone, please take a look at the Original Development thread. From the top of my head, Franco and ElementalX kernels have this capability, it works wonders in direct sunlight.

Confirming, kernels include this capability, as well as the ability to overclock or underclock other system specs (not required, but possible). Speaking for high brightness mode on Franco Kernel using Franco Kernel Updater, it's maybe 15% brighter. Noticeable, but not dramatic. With this combination (FK + FKU), you can't simply increase the maximum value of the brightness slider. Instead you can either turn it all the way on or off manually from within the app, or have it automated (you can't adjust the settings, e.g. how bright, what threshold it triggers at, and it's still all the way on or off with the automatic setting).
Can't speak for elementalx, but I hope someone delivers a more elegant solution. EDIT: having just watched a video about elementalx, turns out that kernel allows you to automate the trigger with tasker. Again, it's still either all the way on or all the way off. Judging by the video the brightness didn't appear to differ from franko kernel's high brightness mode.
It's the same on all kernels. I brought the feature to this device and also created a handy widget( check my sig). The beta version of the widget has an auto mode

Screen too bright even on lowest brightness

Hello, I have recently purchased Moto G4 Play and I find the display of it too bright even on the lowest settings.
I used to read news and ebooks at bedtime but it is very stressful with this level of brightness.
I have tried 'Screen Filter' app and it slows down the mobile plus the actual brightness is not reduced.
I will root my device if it is going to help me with this brightness issue.
What would you recommend? My device is still in the 10 day window for return from Amazon.
Thanks.
Not sure about stock but the brightness goes pretty low on the XOSP rom I'm using right now.
Because you mentioned you use it for reading, I would recommend Twilight or f.lux(both available on playstore f.lux needing root).
They really help with the screen saturation and make it easier on your eyes.
I tried screen filter and it worked perfectly. Maybe it has something to do with the stock rom.
An alternate to screen filter would be Lux Lite it worked as good as screen filter maybe this works in your case.
Thanks for quick reply

I am already using Twilight : ), I am little scared about rooting this brand new mobile due to warranty issues. Just for comparison,
the lowest brightness on Moto G4 Play is like Middle for Moto G3 / E3.
Can I claim warranty after rooting this device?

It says on the bootloader unlock page that you cannot once the bootloader is unlocked. So you can't claim the warranty after rooting. But mostly they don't bother letting you claim it on some hardware problems but you should still think of it as void and not take any chances.
Twilight Pro is much enhanced that the free version. I'm using it since I bought this phone. It has "Bed Reading" profile which helps you read in the dark without letting you put stress on your eyes and help you sleep as soon as you leave your phone. According to me, just leave it on default settings and switch to Bed reading at night.

Hi, thanks for reply! I've got 'Bed Reading' profile option too but I am using the twilight free version. Anyway, buying it for sure since it certainly helps me and so should the dev get helped.
I have no compelling reason to root this device except this brightness issue, and I am little worried about Nougat update too, feeling maybe Lenovo will roll back its promise.
When I downloaded it first, it asked me to buy for just ₹20 ($0.29) and there was no reason for denial
What about the adaptive brightness?
I had adaptive brightness set to true when I was facing such a problem. Now it works fine. You can check the Ambient Light sensor in GPS Status and Toolbox app.

Screen filter puts an overlay over everything else, the backlight is still the same it just looks a little dimmer cause everything is a little greyer.
Xposed can lower the backlight

Great find. Now the brightness is perfect for night reading, and it will also improve battery life.
I don't understand though why manufacturers limit the min brightness when it's "free", maybe to artificially segment the market (flagships always have excellent low brightness)... There are cheap chinese phones that have hardware backlight limits, but for G4 Play it's definitely not the case, it's just software limited.

- Using GravityBox or AllMy..., ser the minimun brightness to 1 (or even 2)
- Without adaptative brightness, set the brightness (slider) to minimum
- Go to Youtube, play a video and expand it to fullscreen
The screen becames totally black, but the video still playing (the audio still playing).
Note that if the brightness slider isn't at the true real minimun, everything works nicely.
I tried exactly that, but it works for me. I also use Youtube background playback Xposed module.

Any way to adjust the colour temp of the screen?

I was hoping this was a feature they would add in Oreo, but alas, they just added an extremely overly aggressive night mode that doesn't really let you adjust it enough.
My only real gripe with the phone is how insanely cool the screen is. It almost pains me to go from looking at something like the Pixel in SRGB mode, the S8, or even my LG V20 to then looking at the Essential screen.
I am currently using Screen Balance, which is ok, but it causes issues with some things because it's just an overlay(this is especially bad when casting if you forget to turn it off). Is there a way to manually adjust the temperature of the LCD?
