[SM-T590] Which firmware/rom to install in SM-T590? - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Hi,
I want to root it but I can't find the boot.img for the firmware I have, so I wonder if I should install a newer firmware (software update says it has the latest one... but is nowhere to be found)
So my question is, if I want to install a newer firmware, based on what should I choose it?
should it be by the region I'm in?
thanks

This is a link to the boot image for OXM_XAR version (North America). If your device says 'no updates' then you won't find a newer file to download. If this *isn't* the version you have, search for the latest of your version and extract the various images (that's where this image came from). Cheers

thanks for the reply AsItLies
the one I have is:
M1AJQ.T590XXUOARF8
which I can't find anywhere, maybe is because is from April 2018.
That's why I was thinking if it would be possible to install a newer firmware, which I can download from some websites, and so I'll have the right boot.img
But I'm not sure if I'll end up breaking the device... or what firmware should I choose (in case it's harmless to install it).

Hmmmm interesting, no update for almost a year? That's pretty sad. My patch is dec 2018?
Check this thread it seems to go into some detail about how to find your version...
Cheers

thank you for pointing to that thread, although kies3 and smart switch didn't actually gave me much help, I didn't know about the app "Phone info SAMS", which gave me the data I needed... I still can't find the firmware I have in order to modify the boot.img, but at least I know what country code is (UK-BTU) so I'll try to install the one I found in updato.

Anyone know if the SM-T597 uses the same roms etc as the SM-T590 and SM-T595?

Do you know if it is branded etc?
Anyway we thank you for the KDZ.
EDIT: Oh, there is some purple logo, so yes, there is some branding.
I am adding some screens.
As you can see, there is a new option - wifi calling.
Edit: in hidden menu there is function VoLTE which finally doesn't show "not supported".

It doesn't even have new January security patch! It seems like we will never get 7.0 Nougat.

There shouldn't be any problems with flashing. Try to flash it and look at what's new. And even if it has WiFi calling like this poland version, VoLTE, patch level etc. But for me it is strange that this is 20g.
EDIT: Uhm, that SEA version id not able to flash for me. It shows some error at 9 %.
Hmmmmm the same happened to me to at 9%...
Trying the Polish one instead and will try download the AES version one more time or maybe someone else has the direct kdz link, maybe @AION has it ?
Really think We should have got Nougat by now, espesially after all the bootloop issues and s#it we G4 owners have had, just as a little sign of "goodwill" from LG :fingers-crossed:

someone else had posted something similar also for the T280 in the development thread (one of those either by jedid or ashyx). It turned out be a 5.0.1 (for some reason was incorrectly listed as 6.0.1) Not sure if this is the real thing or the same incorrect listing

I got a bug fix and security patch (Jan '17) update a few days ago, still lollipop though. I doubt we'll get marshmallow, we would've got it by now if they were going to give it to us, I don't mind too much because it pretty much caters for my needs as it is. Don't pin your hopes on a custom ROM either, this doesn't seem like much of a popular device, at least the model running a spreadtrum processor anyway.

In general, all Moto's are like this:
XXX - Original factory flash or initial release
XXXS - OTA Update
The firmware itself is identical.

I know this thread is a bit dated but I just searched and found it, as I was curious what the difference in the file names where. Mine is a g5s plus, but it would still pertain to my curiosity. The file I'm looking at are nps and npss.
Thankyou for your simplistic and straight forward answer acejavelin. It clears things up good.
I didn't want to download an india version of the rom, so this helped me a lot, ty ty!

Phone not updated since March security patch

My F5321 from Malaysia isn't receiving any of the new updates. Last one was 34.4.A.2.32.
Could anyone explain why?
You can check xpericheck.com if there's a newer version, but there's a good chance there isn't one. I'm stuck on 34.4.A.2.50 on the Central Europe version for example, the newest one is .85

Customised MY isn't even listed. :/
What now? Unlocking bootloader if you want latest security patches?
Is there another firmware variant that would be suitable for your location? There may be less difference between the variants than you might expect.

Can you just flash the firmware straight from xperifirm, or do you need an unlocked bootloader or sth?

According to xpericheck, singapore region firmware is also stuck in March. I guess both MY and SG are using the sme FW. I think you cn flsh other region FW without unlocking Bootloader.
Is there a way to flash security updates only, without upgrading to oreo?

Can anyone please confirm this? I'll unlock the bootloader if I have to, but it would be great if it is not needed.

If you want to retain the fingerprint sensor operation, don't flash to US. People here have in the past recommended either DE or UK, as they tend to be updated promptly. No unlocking of bootloader needed.
Okay guys. I'm ready to flash a new firmware, probably Customised UK. Is the guide on xperiablog up to date and accurate? Also, there is a flashtool by Androxyde on flashtool dot net, but there is also a flashtool on Sony Developer World. Which one should I use?
There is only one xperifirm so that's unambiguous, at least.
Edit: also, it doesn't affect user data or the OS in general, does it?
I can only speak from personal experience with the Androxyde flashtool. I've never tried (nor even known about) the Sony flash tool. In my experience, if you don't make any changes to the default settings, the existing user data is carried over into the newly installed firmware. I'm assuming here that you're flashing from one variant of Android 8.0 to another, not from Android 7 to 8, etc.
BTW, I would always advise backing up your data first, of course. If, for some reason, you are dissatisfied with the result, you can normally get a factory installation of your currently-installed firmware by using software restore from SONY (as part of Xperia Companion).
@pseudonym58 Thanks. Is the guide on Xperia blog the one to follow or is there a better one out there?
I don't recall which guide I used. It basically runs like this:
Run Xperiafirm from within flashtool; it will refresh available software. Choose particular phone model and download desired firmware. Back in flashtool proper, connect phone in flash mode. Select downloaded firmware, which is unpacked and prepared for flashing. As I mentioned above, you should not need to make any configuration changes to the default. Flashing can now begin (it might seem to pause temporarily from time to time but don't cancel process).
Don't worry about warnings of missing elements; I have never had a flashing procedure fail as a result of a claimed missing component.
This is just a general procedure; perhaps someone else can recommend the best full tutorial.
Ok so CE1 got the newest (.107) update right now so it can probably be used too.

Sorry Im new so I dont know where to find that certain page...
Anyways, I will flash a firmware from Germany so Ill see what happens. Not gonna bother you or anyone else on forum.
Yes, you should be ok to flash German firmware over your Serbian firmware, as they're both multi-CSC.
FYI - the latest Serbian firmware is here: https://updato.com/firmware-archive...&rpp=15&r=MSR,TOP&order=date&dir=desc&exact=1
You can edit the filter up the top to remove Serbia and add others, or just leave all and sort by date to get the newest firmware at the top.
Or, instead you can go here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/how-to/asba-official-stock-fw-update-odin-t3908710
